Based upon recent history, Cal (9-1) should not have much of a chance to defeat Stanford tomorrow night. The Cardinal has beaten the Bears badly 12 consecutive times by an average point margin of 24.8 points. This is a very different Stanford basketball team, however. They do not have twin 6-4 towers like Cameron Brink & Kiki Iriafen upfront anymore. They also do not have legendary coach, Tara Van Derveer, any longer. This year's version of the Cardinal is a much better matchup for the Bears. They are still a good team (7-2) that still does many things well. Stanford has played only three good teams and has lost twice. They are undefeated at home but are 0-2 on the road.

Stanford Cardinal - Official Athletics Website

Stanford is shooting 50.1% from the field for 2024-25. They have shot well in 7 of 9 games. They were not on their game at home vs UC Davis (69-56 W) and at Indiana (79-66 L). On both occasions, they scored in the sixties. LSU (#4 in the nation) edged Stanford in the deep South, 94-88, in OT in their last game. Obviously, they almost pulled off a major upset.

Bottom line: Cal needs to play to their potential to put an end to Stanford's winning streak. Both teams are similar in height now and both hit approximately 9 1/2 three pointers per contest. Stanford handles the ball well but does not force many turnovers. They outrebound their oppositon by an average of 10 boards (40-30). The Bears will have to neutralize that advantage to stay in the game and possibly win. My prediction is Cal will pull off the victory tomorrow night by a 74-72 score. To succeed, the Bears will have to hit their outside shots. Last season, the Cardinal defense held their archrivals to 11 of 53 (20.75%) on their treys.

Kate Paye is the new HC and she rotates eight players right now. PG Talana Lepolo is injured and has missed their last four games. Their starting PG is 5-10 RS junior Jzaniya Harriel. She is tied for the most threes with 19 and hits an unbelievable 52.8% of her attempts! She is fourth in scoring with 9.1 ppg. The starter at SG is Tess Heal, a 5-10 junior transfer from Santa Clara. She stands sixth on the team in scoring at 7.9 points. Chloe Clardy, a 5-9 soph, splits the minutes there and averages 8 ppg and is 2nd in steals.

Their second leading scorer is 6-2 senior wing, Elena Bosgana. The southpaw tallies 13.7 ppg. She leads Stanford is steals (19) and is tied for the three-point lead w/ 19. She is a key rebounder who is second on the team with 5.4/g. Courtney Ogden, a 6-1 soph, is her backup. She plays 15.2 minutes & contributes 5.1 points to the cause.

The starting SF is 6-3 senior, Brooke Demetre, who is 3rd in both scoring (11.8) and rebounding (5.3). She is also third in treys with 14 on the season. She is invaluabe because she leads the team in assists with 21 while only commiting 6 turnovers. Purdue 6-2 sophomore transfer, Mary Ashley Stevenson, is fourth in rebounding (4.3) and chips in 5 ppg.

The emerging star for Stanford is 6-2 soph PF, Nunu Agara. This young lady plays 30.3 minutes per game and leads the team in offense w/ 18.8 points and rebounds w/ 7.0. She is the top shot blocker with 10 and is 2nd in assists w/ 20. She erupted against LSU last week for 29 points and 13 boards. Wow!

This battle should be competitive and I'll keep my fingers crossed that Cal plays a great ballgame in both team's ACC opener. GO BEARS!

Thanks for scouting report. This is a huge game for Cal

I think you have a typo in your first statement (sounds like you don't think Cal has a chance, but your write up has a different conclusion)

You know that Charmin has circled this game on her calendar particularly now that Tara has retired.

Go Bears!!

For one of the rare times, Cal may be able to match Stanford's shooting prowess.

Cal cannot beat themselves with bad fouls and turnovers. If Cal can keep the TOs to 15 or less...and makes 3s at their normal clip and defend the 3 point arc, Cal stands a decent chance.

As usual, Michelle will have to use her fouls well - you know Stanford will try to go at her. Defend without fouling, please!

And play with swagger. Stanford over the years has come into Haas with a "we're beating you" attitude and the Bears have (too often) bought into that and played tentative. This is the time for Cal to take it TO Stanford and dictate terms.

HoopDreams-the third sentence: "This is a very different Stanford basketball team, however." This sentence transitions to a much better matchup now, etc. It sounds alright to me but thanks for your feedback.

the first statement says "Based upon recent history, Cal (9-1) should not have much of a chance to defeat Stanford tomorrow night."

And yes, you then transition to "this is a very different stanford..." but it takes a lot of reading to figure out they your conclusion was you favored Cal to win

anyway, this is a sports blog ... not expecting a graduate thesis so you're good

My biggest hope for this one is that the our team doesn't come out wound too tight. It's just speculation but I think that was the case in the Alabama game. In the first quarter, and even through the second quarter of that game, it felt like our players were a bit off, some missed open shots and self inflicted turnovers.

Come out confident but still loose. As long as that happens and we don't bury ourselves on the scoreboard, the key to victory will then come down to the usual factors, starting of course with Michele and the fouls, Marta minimizing turnovers, and Lulu regaining her shooting confidence. And again, the key to this one just might be how much energy Jayda brings off the bench, especially on the defensive end of the court. Go Bears!

I always thought Leopolo was over rated except she killed us. We recruited Harriel in high school but lost out to Stanford. I saw her play and she is a better scorer than Leopolo. I may have mis spelled the two names .

Lulu did not make a three-point basket against Stanford last season. She was shutout in one game and had two points in the other. Needless to say, Lulu is the team's leading scorer this season, so the Bears need more than that from her offensively to emerge victorious tonight. Twidale is currently in a shooting slump so hopefully she can break out of it on Friday the 13th!

Agree, Lulu needs to get her accuracy back, but as usual part of this factor is based on how well we run our offense. Sometimes that extra split second that Lulu gets is the difference maker. If furd makes it a point to extend out on her like recent teams have been doing, then our back door cuts have to be run efficiently.

During the last two or three games, she played in a way that suggested minor injury: not badly, but not with her usual timing.

Point spread keeps dropping.

Before noon today on espn.com, it was Stanford favored by 4.5 points.
Later in the day, it was 3.5 points.

Now, at 4pm, it's down to 1.5 points.

Hmmm. Maybe a key player for them is not playing tonight.

Charmin continues to substitute for her starting lineup and the replacements cannot score. This makes for weakness in the offense with only three players on the court that are legit offensive threats.

Bears lead by nine at intermission but only the starters have scored. The five reserves are 0-5 without a point. None of the shots are close either. Air ball three points attempt by Jayda Noble.

Cal is not turning the ball over and only has three PFs at half. Onyiah has one and two reserves, King & Maul, picked up quick ones upon entering the game. Overall, the defense has been solid but the Cardinal began connecting on their threes late in the 2nd quarter. Bears are also tied in rebounding at 24-24 which is huge.

If Stanford picks up their shooting (only 26.7), this game will be very close. GO BEARS!

Cal +9 at the half. Good solid defense.

Krimili had a scary moment, looked like knee-on-knee. But she returned and made 2 great shots to close the half.

Lulu looks better.

Cal can't help inside and leave shooters.

Stay solid, Bears!

I shouldn't be upset that Stanfurd as a 7-0 run as Cal still leads by 20 with 5 minutes to go - but, yeah, I want to see Bears keep the foot on the gas and trounce the Cardinal and never give the Cardinal even a vestige of hope.

Best game of the season to open ACC play with a statement (83-63) and put an end to that losing streak vs Stanford. I would say that this game was even better than the Gonzaga win by 21 in Spokane. The Bears (10-1) outplayed the Cardinal in every facet of THIS game. Eighteen three-point baskets has to be a Cal record and the Bears outrebounded their rivals (43-38). Cal also had 20 assists and only 9 turnovers. GO BEARS!

The 18 3 pointers is a school record and it also was the largest margin of victory by Cal over Stanford.

Really disappointed in our free throw shooting (just kidding, folks). I didn't want to leave Haas and when I did I wanted to click my heels. What a great team performance. I've been going to Cal-Stanfurd women's basketball games for over 30 years and have never seen anything like it. Hopefully this represents two programs going in opposite directions. It certainly means we're a top 25 team and are going to be taken very seriously from now on. Huge credit to the coaches who had the team prepared in every facet of the game. What a great night and how fun was it to see Charmin lead the Bear Territory chant post game? Go Bears forever!!!

I loved that moment--it's great when Charmin cuts loose. I'm not sure that she's Cal's best WBB coach, but I like her the most.

I don't think I had ever seen Cal with a double-digit lead over Stanford and I've been watching Cal WBB since Gooch Foster's early days. Today we never trailed and our lead got up to 27. I'm still in shock.

Our 5 starters were awesome but I want to give a shout out to Jayda for making so many good things happen!

I still don't understand why Stanford didn't switch to a pressure defense. Our most apparent weakness is turnovers and at halftime we had only 2.

Stanford made some tough threes but it was obvious they have nowhere near their former level of talent. Kinda sad but since it's Stanford not too sad.

I appreciate the officials letting them play. Only 23 fouls were called between both teams and the game never got rough.

P.S. Palms of Victory to the Splash Sisters! (And to Michelle's superb blocks. And to the overall great defense.)

P.P.S. And to Twidale's form having returned.

Feeling better.

Cal was clearly the better team today and did to Stanford what Stanford historically has done to Cal.

While Cal killed it shooting 3s, Michelle was THE DIFFERENCE. Took #3 out of the game. Altered many shots. Credited with 5 blocks. Dominant. Intimidating. Bottle this game, Michelle. We have the scorers and you'll get yours too. But playing that kind of defense changes the game.

When Kayla banked in one of her 3s, I thought...well, maybe. When Marta hit the 3 at the end of the 3rd Q, Stanford was done.

Cal: only 9 TOs! And Jayda is the 'ace in the hole'. Just so tenacious on defense. Goes for every loose ball. Super glue player.

Also, when Krimili came back in after banging knees and played effectively, a big sigh of relief. My first thought was hyperextended knee or even an ACL; could have been a pyrrhic victory (or maybe Cal doesn't hang on). But thankfully, looks minor. We shall see Sunday.

I'm still kind of stunned the margin of victory was so great. Finally, Stanford was the team that looked hopeless.

Never have seen Cal do this to Stanford before. It feels great! Does not make up for the past, but Bear fans? Celebrate this one!
