TV analyst just said the same thing ... duke's length on perimeter

really had to play against long, quick, athletic defenders

we are simply out gunned against this duke team playing at home

Notre Dame, Duke and North Carolina are a cut above in the league. Really hard to play them on the road.

Duke is good but not great. ND the only great team in ACC. Can make excuses, but it is embarrassing to not be competitive. Better beat a bad Wake team. Furd beat them by only 3. Although Furd is bad too. So next two games are against bad-average teams. Need to win those to setup a redemption game against NC at Haas.

I think they will have to watch a replay and see how they were pressured into this many mistakes. Other teams will certainly be looking for what bothers us this much.

Is 31 turnovers a Cal record? Suarez (7), Krimili (6), Twidale (4) & Onyiah (4) are starters that cannot function against a fast, athletic defense like Duke possesses. The next two teams play at the same speed as the Bears do.

Clemson held Cal to a season low of 58 points. Tonight was a humiliation to score only 38. Bears were blown out by 34 points! The Blue Devils scored 32 of those points off of the Bear's 31 turnovers.

Notre Dame is in an ACC tier by itself. They are not competing with the rest of the league; they are in an arms race with UCLA, South Carolina, Texas, USC, and maybe LSU, Oklahoma, and Connecticut, basically using the offseason portal to grab the best available player from another team and assimilating them.

A few months ago, on this board, I made three separate lists:

- the 8 best players to transfer out of the ACC in the offseason (including the 3 new teams, so Stanford's Kiki Iriafen was on the list)
- Notre Dame's top 8 players this season
- the 8 best players on any other ACC team this season

It was close, but I think the Notre Dame list was the strongest.

yes, and they will, but not everyone has the long, athletic guard athletes to do what Duke did

^ 100%, top 16 teams like duke got that kinda disruptive quick twitch +1 athletic length, wake forest does not

BearBloke and I turned off the game after the third quarter. My only consolation is that I really like Kara Lawson and admire her achievements as a head coach.

I can't imagine that the travel all the way across the country and three time zones didn't have some effect. Same with the loss to Clemson two weeks ago. That said, the Wake Forest game is now critical because Stanford will be very motivated to beat us the next week and we don't want to lose three in a row.

Plus, coming off two tough home games (wins!) against NC State and Florida State. Not much rest for the starters.

In the spirit of sportsmanship, why was Duke still shooting/attempting 3-pointers at the end of the 4th quarter? Not pleased with that.

Charmin and the staff will have them ready to go on Sunday. I'm sure the players are anxious to get back on the court to show this game was an anomaly.

Go Bears!!

Watching this game, several times in the first half the announcer kept saying that Cal needed to "slow things down."
Ironically the reality is, that with the defense Duke was playing our players didn't have the ability to "speed things up" in order to compete. So many times the turnovers came because our players were simply unable to move the ball quickly enough. Dropped passes, bad passes, Marta's first 3 point attempt she barely had a grip on the ball.
I don't really know how you fix this problem, other than playing this type of competition and over time and adjusting to it. The reality is, we don't face enough of this type of competition to even get accustomed to it. On Sunday when we play Wake, the good news is that we won't face the defense that Duke threw at us. The bad news is, the game won't make us any better.

Got a note from my Duke friend. said in their chalk talk that their coach said they worked on their offense all week and it was better. Having our two bigs get in foul trouble hurt. Wondered if i was interested in coming to the ACC tourney. I said i might. Anyone else interested? Maybe Shocky?

I have high school grads in Greensb. And another frat brother in Asheville if it has recovered and the spring time might mean warmer temps.

Besides kicking our butts, a couple of the Duke players were really obnoxious.

Recapping the game for the other side, I looked at the California-Duke box score, and when you click on "Game Information" it says that 2,428 people attended the game. (Cameron Indoor Stadium holds just over 9,300.)

Out of curiosity, I also pulled up yesterday's Stanford-Wake Forest box score, and only 926 were in attendance in an arena that holds nearly 15,000. I imagine that attendance will be better for your Sunday afternoon game, but with the predicted cold and wet conditions, maybe not by much.

I kept saying the same thing at the TV - "slow things down"? Cal is not taking a shot until deep into the clock and even had shot clock violations. if anything, Cal actually need to speed things up to get past the Duke defense and get a shot up before the defenders were draped over the Bears. Except Cal was not quick enough to do that.
The Cal players couldn't get open - no screens were effective - the Duke guards (and others) were just too quick and tight for the Bears.
I don't think it was travel - Cal just got beat repeatedly

Agreed, the travel was not a factor. Unlike the Michigan State and Clemson games, we had no chance whatsoever in this one. Simply put, their defense overwhelmed us.

Simple things would have helped. Like knowing what one is going to do with the ball BEFORE stopping the dribble. Not dribbling into defenders. Passing early. Setting real screens of the ball. Some things never change.

Wouldn't necessarily agree with that as far as this season goes. In most of the games this season the deficiencies you are speaking of have been minimal. But last night because of the defensive intensity and agressiveness that Duke brought, those issues did indeed resurface. Often last night I found myself saying "killed the dribble too early" and before you could blink the game was out of reach.

Charmin's postgame comments:

On the turnovers… "You feel better if you get a shot off. The turnovers, a lot of that led to them being able to get out in transition and get easy baskets. We can't even get our defense set when we're throwing it to them, right? So that's why the turnovers are more impactful. The other piece that we talked about was boxing out, and we couldn't keep them off of the glass. They had a field day on the offensive boards, and again, they were aggressive. They punched us in the face and kept punching and we had a tough time with them."

Charmin competes in Muay Thai boxing, so I guess she knows a thing or two about being punched in the face.

When facing a defense like Duke, I think should bode well for the Bears later in the season. While it's not an excuse for their play, it is a reason.

You have to face something like this in order to learn from it.

I think this team will learn from this.

they played their starting center to the end of the game

probably trying to get a scoring record for her or something, but I thought it was a punk move, especially because we were playing zero centers at that time

agree with those that travel wasn't a significant factor (Duke being at home is like any road game)

the real problem is duke looked like an elite defensive team on the perimeter (their post defense was only solid)
