Cal's had a great year, but Shocky thinks it could have been better. Is he justified in that opinion?

First, any season could be better. Any coach, like any executive, or any worker, will make mistakes and bad decisions. But given that reality, how do we feel about Charmin and her staff this season?

To get to Shocky's first point, Michelle Onyiah is much better this year than she has been in the past. Is she the perfect player? No, far from it. She fouls way too much, and simply doesn't seem to be aware of what she needs to do to cut down on fouling, She's been told how to get better at that 1000 times but can't seem to make the adjustment.

Of course, you can say that that's coaching, but anyone who's been a boss has had an employee that simply cannot do something that appears simple to everyone else. People are people and they sometimes simply cannot translate important mental information into accurate physical actions.

Michelle is better than she was when she got to Cal. Credit to Charmin? Michelle still fouls like a middle schooler. Blame to Charmin?

Otherwise, Cal has a somewhat flawed roster. There's not a lot of pure athleticism, at least in terms of the teams playing in the NCAA tournament and there's not a lot of depth. One could argue that Charmin could have done more with the athletic limitations of her team but one could also point out believe that she's pretty much maximized the available talent.

I tend to fall more with the latter group. I don't think this is a top 16 team, and in fact I'm really sort of surprised Cal was ranked in the top 25 at all. Much credit to Charmin for that.

But a big part of any college coach's job is to develop long-term success. It doesn't seem that this year's win total is going to be easy to replicate next year. Still, a good season is a good season, and there haven't been that many of those in recent years. And I don't think you can blame Charmin for the lack of attendance. That's not her job. her job is to win games, and she's done that this year.

But is that enough? Does she need to back it up with another good season next year? Or, even if Cal struggles next year, has Charmin shown that she can succeed in a rapidly changing, brutally competitive environment, and is a good fit for the university?

Nice summary Clay. About as objective on the facts as one can be.

As far as next year, the first step is the roster. It appears we have 4 coming in (2 in the top 100) and either 6 or 7 spots opening up, (Marta?) That means 2 or 3 more incoming. I have to think at least one will come from the portal. As much as we discuss Charmin's in game coaching, these last two or three players have to be sufficiently talented, it will probably make the difference between a decent season and a poor one. I think that is the logical starting point of evaluation.

I think this has been a remarkable season.
Cal was predicted for 14th in the ACC. Currently 7th.
3 Quad 1 wins (last week was 2...ah, the magic of NET)
Net Ranking of 40 (last year 59)
4-2 in Quad 2
15-0 against Quad 3 & 4.
22 freaking wins

I have enjoyed being able to follow this team, share the joy of winning, bummed with the losses, and loved bringing freaking friends and seeing them get jazzed about what's been happening at Haas

With Williams, Noble, Ackerman and Maul from the portal last offseason, I'm confident that Charmin will replicate those quality additions or exceed them during this offseason. Having this season on her resume will turn some heads and generate considerable interest from those in the portal.

Pretty interesting write up, thanks. The X factor moving forward is probably the NIL money? But is Cal's going to off-set that with strong international recruiting?
We will see...

I have always believed that the bottom line performance expectation has to be making the NCAA tournament. When you are investing $5 million a year in a program, you can't settle for less than that. Unfortunately, in the current NIL/portal environment, a coach does have to reconstruct a roster every single year, which does make it much harder to succeed

Given where the program had been and what was predicted for this season, 2024-25 has been a huge success. Charmin built not only a strong roster but a strong coaching staff. The Bears already have 20 plus wins and by sweeping the last two games can finish at 12-6 in the ACC which, according to my rudimentary math, is twice as many wins as losses in a brutal conference. In the era of the transfer portal it is extremely difficult to predict the future. However a terrific group of guards led by Puff Morris are coming in. Lulu returns (hopefully) and maybe Marta. Some of this year's freshies will hopefully experience the same kind of improvement that Lulu has. Charmin did well in the portal last off season. This year she can boast a team that made the NCAAs which will make Cal an even more attractive destination to potential transferees. In sum I'm ecstatic about the present and feel justifiably optimistic about the future.
Kudos to Clay for his excellent analysis to start this thread.
Go Bears, beat Tech!
P.S. Shocky thinks Charmin could have done better? Of course she could have. He could also do a lot better with his comments (I assume I never read them). We could all do better at whatever our jobs are. In the case of Charmin Smith the fact that she "could have done better" in no way diminishes how damn good a job she has done this season.

Smith should get some credit for improving the team. However, she has failed to improve the "team" in ways that she should have. The turnovers, the panicked passes after picking up the dribble, the inability to in bound the ball, the in ability to get shooters open shots, the weakness against the press and failures to pass to the post are all matters that she should have fixed by coaching. Hopefully, she will have this stuff under control by next year.

From all indications, this team is 'together'. That is a reflection of the team's leader. On numerous occasions, players have commented on how they can be themselves, that they do not have to try to be something they're not. On or off the court. When a player has that enablement, it is empowering to the player. I believe this is a positive reflection on Charmin.

I look at two past examples: Leilani Mcintosh and Jaylen Brown. Both were very raw in their first couple of seasons. By the end of their college eligibility, both were much better. In all facets. While much of this was their hard work, you have to have some direction. The coaching staff helped those players grow. Leilani, to me, is still the quintessential Golden Bear.

Fast forward to this season - each of the impact players from the previous season have improved to where they now affect winning. I think the coaching staff has something to do with that in terms of the culture and the direction they provide, both on and off the court.

I suppose the bottom line is this: are you winning? The answer this season (and to a certain extent, last season) is YES. Thus, kudos to the team and to the staff.

Also bear in mind Charmin has had to navigate the transfer portal and NIL. Both have changed the landscape of college sports immensely. Players can pretty move where they wish with impunity. Next season will be very, very interesting with the players coming in.

Add to this multiple 2500-3000 mile trips every other week and having to play tough teams on the road and at home.

Because you never know what is in store next year (although I am cautiously optimistic the momentum created this season will carry over), I would advise everyone enjoy this team's path forward THIS SEASON.

we are having a very good season and the team runs an exciting offense.

Charmin has been very successful retaining our key talent, including Michelle, Ioanna, Marta, Lulu and Leilani.

Players who transferred were not big losses, or had very legit reasons to do so (e.g. Kemery Martin who returned home to Utah and got married).

Players like to play for her.

She has recruited well in the HS ranks and the transfer portal with a VERY limited NIL budget. If she has more NIL I would expect the talent level of her recruits to jump.

She has led and supported a ton of social causes, community events, and engages with the fans after every game. The number and types of game promotions are 2X the mens (for example, after every Sunday game the players stay to sign autographs, and she holds lots of pre and post game talks/events for the Golden Way members (who are donors, but if they invite me, it can't require much of a donation).

Attendance has been 1-1/2 to 2X what prior seasons have been.

She is a great role model and a class act.

We are extremely fortunate to have her, and if we aren't careful she could be lured away to a bigger program.

Totally agree altho a few key transfers were Curry and Forbes and Smith-(altho Charmin wasn't HC at the time).

Curry was a big loss

Forbes would have probably stayed if we signed her brother who wanted to come to Cal but wasn't given the option and went to Harvard. He was a tweener but a solid player in his junior/senior year

Smith was a huge loss, but both Forbes and Smith transferred after Charmin left to the NBA. Charmin couldn't pull them back when she was named Cal head coach

We also lost the highly ranked 3 bigs that were in Michelle's class, but only Daniels turned out to be a good player after returning home and I never liked her game nor attitude. Her transfer made a lot of sense for her.

I was disappointed Heide left as a grad transfer. She was injured for most of her Cal time. She finally looks healthy and putting up good points, rebounds and blocks at Oregon State
