I know she walked on Senior day but these days that is not a sure sign she is finished. Does she have another year of eligibility as someone posted previously? If she does will she return to Cal? Her return would be huge for the Bears next year.

She has yet to make a public announcement about her future plans.

during the last MBB home game Rytis said on the center scoreboard something along the lines of "Looking forward to see you next year" which I took as a positive sign that he's returning next season. That's great news because he's a winner.

during the last WBB home game Lulu said the same thing. Maybe I'm reading too much in to this, but those are two key players returning for next season.

Regarding Marta, it would be huge if she returns. I've said repeatedly that she is a major key player as she presents match up problems to so many teams. Yeah she has lots of turnovers, but she knows it and has been better in recent games dishing out many assists. Here are her assists last several games:

Virginia (today's game) - 4, 3, 4, 4, 5, 1, 5

That's more than anyone on the team including our PG.

She also is a major rebounder (7/game), and defender who complements Michelle as she's a different type of post defender

AND she is a stretch 4 and can drive and handle

Lattimore & Suarez played their freshman season in 2020 (Covid-19). Each one of them is entitled to a Covid 5th
year if they desire. Lattimore will return for UVA. If Marta doesn't return, Cal will likely drop back toward the bottom of the ACC. If she does use her eligibility, I think that Charmin would have a chance to bring in 2 or 3 transfers from the portal to fill out a competitive starting lineup. Marta Suarez, Lulu Twidale & Puff Morris would likely start, and the Bears will need to bring in a post player to replace Michelle Onyiah and another scorer to replace Ionna Krimili. Gabrielle Abigor and Gisella Maul could be productive players off of the bench. Cal will also have four sophs & three freshmen to compete for playing time.

Next season is difficult to predict because of the transfer portal.

You can lose key players, you can gain key players.

Another key might be the graduate student angle. Where is Cal this season without their grad student players?

Based on recruited players coming in, they're guards or wings, correct? Which means Charmin will be looking to bring in a post or two.

I think Cal should be okay at the guard and wing positions...again, barring anyone leaving.

On the subject of this thread, I was unaware Marta had another year of eligibility. If she does and stays, it makes Cal immediately better.

It will be interesting to see what develops.

Not sure how you make that conclusion("likely drop to bottom of ACC") until you see what comes about in the transfer portal. 4 years ago, you/we didn't know Marta Suarez from Ranger Suarez...
The real X factor with Charmin and staff is this ability to attract foreign players...like other winning sports at Cal, they have been a valuable influx...

mbBear-your comment seems reasonable on the surface but i know the rosters of the rest of the ACC. UVA, for example, will have virtually everyone returning that played yesterday vs Cal. They have three sophs, one freshman & one junior. I thought that Lattimore would be gone but she has now affirmed that she'll return for a 5th Covid year. Stanford's entire team returns except for Demetre & Bosgana. Their team is mostly sophs and they're bringing in the #3 recruit class in the nation. I could go on and on...I don't see the Bears being competitive unless Charmin Smith is able to land 2-3 impact transfers. Cal's 25-7 record should help lure talent. Marta Suarez needs to exercise her fifth Covid year of eligibility. With only Lulu returning from the starting five, Cal will have less returning that the vast majority of teams in the ACC.

That's just it. The unknown!! You don't know who will join the Bears from the portal. So, you think the worst. "The sky is falling". Good grief.

We didn't know Noble, Williams, Maul or Ackerman until May of last year when they committed to us from the portal. And that was off a 19-15 season and a trip to the WBIT (lol.)

Imagine what doors an NCAA Tournament bid, and 25+ wins will open in the portal. I can't wait!!

Go Bears!!

Uncertainty is what is happening with the stock market extreme volatility that everyone is experiencing right now.
I believe in Trump's plan and policies but they haven't been put in place yet. When people can't see it, they tend to believe that "the sky is falling."

You're correct that Charmin may be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat but only time will tell. Suarez really needs to return to give Cal two double-digit scorers as a base to build upon. Also, Suarez will give the Bears one post player that the team can plan around...The head coach doesn't need to bring in quite so many guards and concentrate more on a couple of frontline players to help balance the team.

Good to know you aren't pro choice and anti gay marriage. But no one ****ing cares....
Spare me the "I know the ACC"... just like those who picked Cal 14th? You have no idea about transfers ..

S71 - Ihope you are joking. you don't know radical if you think these guys are left wing radicals. The stock market was doing great before the right wing radicals took over. Now it has its worst week since September and we are just getting started.
Anyway, Charmin needs to teach the Bears to value the ball. Then she needs some NIL money to spend on a couple bigs who can really play to compliment the current and incoming guards.

Here's a thought: don't bring up politics, and you won't know what anyone is thinking politically.
Or do you want to do know our religious affilation, ethnic background and sexual preference so you can hate on us more?

Playing the victim after he's the one that created the problem. Typical of his kind.

GO BEARS and FUC* Trump. I never cared to insert my opinion here but hey…someone felt the need to bring it up in a (checks notes) Women's Basketball Forum? Pathetic.

Funny. My portfolio was sky high these last two years. I made godlike amounts of money in CHIP stocks, thanks in large part to the investments made via the CHIPS act (thanks Biden). My portfolio has been a sea of red these past 6 weeks, along with everyone else I know. But uh…socialism. Or something?

Ive donated to multiple Cal programs. No point in asking S71 if he has. We already know the answer.

Let's get this back on track. Next year, with our recruiting class, let's assess what our roster will look like both with and wo Marta:

PGs:
Puff
Zahra

Off-ball:
Lulu
Lola
Drousini

Wings/Bigs:
Gabi
Kam Mafua
Maul
Taylor Barnes

Recruits I don't know enough about:
Johnson (5'10)
McCallop (5'9)

Bringing back Marta + 2 legit transfers would probably put us back in the same convo as this year.

If Puff is preternatural, maybe even more.

Without Marta, it obviously completely depends on the transfers we land.

Questions, I think in order of importance:
Does Marta come back?
Who do we get in the portal?
How good is Puff?
Can Gabi take a big step?
Can Lulu add a left hand drive to her game?
Can Mafua/Lola find their shots?
How good are the other recruits?
Can Zahra and Maul get better with experience?

I'm obviously totally focused on the tournament and a hope that we can win two and make it to the second weekend (a 7 seed would significantly help although I would love to just go to LA to watch the games in person), but next year is starting to swirl in my brain.

Grace McCallop:

"Grace is high-level two-way guard that can play both guard positions," Smith said.

Isis Johnson-Musah, 5'10 guard:

"Isis can score in a variety of ways, whether it's off the dribble, getting to the rim or from the midrange," Smith said. "She's got really good length that leads to steals and deflections and handles the ball extremely well. When she shifts into high gear, she's unstoppable."

A couple of things. I definitely think Gabi will take that big step. Cautiously optimistic on that one. Also from what we've seen, asking if Kamryn can find her shot should not be grouped with asking if Lola can find hers. My guess is Kamryn will be just fine. Lola has some serious work to do, (if possible.)

Kamryn needs to get stronger. and quicker. she is not quick enough to play the wing and n gets pushed around underneath. I have said from the first practice that Abigor is athletic and fast enough. But she too needs to hit the weight room to get as strong as Michele.

The vast majority of people who oppose Trump's actions are not "radical." And the VAST majority of people who are Democrat or progressive or left are also not "radical." That is a cop out way of dismissing contrary opinions or anything less to the Right of you.

The majority of Americans are moderate, but should they disagree with MAGA they magically transform into "radical left" through the tribal with-us-or-against-us lens. The radicals we see in America today who are shocking the system with views and policy that transgresses from well-established norms (thus fitting the actual definition of radical) are on the right. I don't want politics here and you say you don't either, but I am not going to let misrepresentation go unchallenged.
