So, even though it doesn't officially open until 3/25, grad students and players from teams that are undergoing a coaching change can start entering the portal.

Interesting names...and another Jalyn Brown (even if the spelling is different)

Would love to get Caitlin Weimer from NC State. She'd be a great replacement for Onyiah.

Go Bears!

How about Sera Williams as well?

My hunch is that Cal will poach some of USF's international players. No inside knowledge, but it's worked before and those players are already familiar with the Bay Area. 12 of their 15 players were from overseas this year

Based upon what?

My hesitation would be that she sat out this season with an injury. It would depend upon what type of injury. The stats posted were from her previous season at Boston University.

Not that I know if she is in play at all(or desired), but the Ivy League Rookie of the Year Katie Collins is in Wharton at Penn...6-1, but with East Coast (New Jersey) roots....

Wharton is a business school inside Penn. Penn and Princeton are the closest schools to New Jersey from the Ivy Legue. I used to go to school in Philadelphia.

I live in New Jersey, an hour and change from Penn; used to live 15-20 min. from Penn. Where she is from is equal distance between Penn and Columbia, just to add another.
My point was that someone at Wharton might at least listen to Cal because of Haas.

I was assuming people would know about Haas Business school. Did you go to the Jersey shore?

So you must live on the North Jersey shore. I always went to the South Jersey Shore. You and Bruce Springsteen.

Nope..."an hour and change from Penn" should have been your hint. Close to AC... South Jersey here.

Looks interesting...if she has recovered from her torn ACL...entered the portal:

Was averaging 13 points and 8 rebounds through 14 games this year when she got hurt.

We seem to be set at the guard position. Five currently on the roster plus three coming in and walk-on, Sofia Bowes.

Kamryn Mafua is listed as a guard/forward. Likewise, in-coming freshman, Taylor Barnes.

Yes...but it would be lovely to have some bench scoring...

Would a good portal player choose Cal to come off the bench?

Jayda did, as did Natalie. (And I don't think we ever really saw what Claudia is capable of). It's also possible that the portal player(s) would start and the bench could include some of the incoming (scoring) talent, or current bench players with greater growth and opportunity.

I suppose Jayda came as defensive role player. Natalie, like Ila last season, might have started if she had been healthy. Too bad about Claudia, I'd love to see what she could do. AFAIK she has another year of eligibility, dunno if she wants to use it or will be fully healthy.

Last year's portal class was especially good because of all of the league realignments. Oregon State and Washington State both lost key players who did not want to be left behind in a lower league. Some other teams moving into the Big 12 also saw some key losses. The good players this year may be mostly players moving up from non-Power 4 teams, as well as grad transfers with one more year of eligibility and a chance to pick up both NIL money and a grad certificate from a good school. I am mostly hoping for an international post, which might also help us get a pipeline going for the future.

I think the grad transfer route could really work for Cal.

Undergraduate majors have marginal value, even in something like chemical engineering. An undergrad business degree is not much better than sociology -- but an MBA from Haas? Or a Cal master's degree in almost anything? There's value there, and a grad student who has realized her dreams of WNBA stardom were indeed just dreams is likely to be ready to be practical.

Excellent points. I'm optimistic that Charmin and staff can bring in a few excellent "bigs" via the portal. They've not only go the university as a lure but the team is coming off a twenty-five win season with an excellent recruiting class coming in. A grad transfer who plays post will also see the potential for a lot of playing time.

Interesting "not local", but I am biased seeing I used to live down the street from St. Joe's:

BREAKING: Saint Joseph's Laura Ziegler intends to enter the transfer portal, her agency
@staylinesports
told
@On3sports

The 6-2 junior averaged 17.5 ppg, 10.4 rpg, 4.3 apg this season.

One of the best mid-major players in the country.

There is a twist: she is from Denmark, so not sure if the Cal "international pipeline" has crossed paths with her previously....

Good find!

We played Saint Joseph's last season in the WBIT at Haas. Laura Ziegler had 19 points, 8 rebounds, 3-8 3-pointers. And 1 steal! lol. I think the staff might be very familiar with her especially when they scouted this opponent.

We lost that game 63-61.

Stayline Sports says it has offices in 10 countries around the world, with main offices in Madrid and Barcelona. I guess that they will try to best position her for possible current overseas deals or for future overseas contracts after graduation. This likely means she will want to transfer to the most visible program possible, with a combination of winning and playing time. Maybe we can fit that profile for her.

Did Cal recruit big Breya Cunningham out of La Jolla Country Day? She is a Sophomore, in the portal from Arizona...
Breya Cunningham, 6-4, F, Soph. (11 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.3 spg)

Glancing at the "On3" database, a few players from Spain caught my eye. Not that "everybody knows everybody," but, with 2 Spanish women on the Cal roster, I wonder if that leads to another?

She's 6ft tall…guard so? People who've seen her in SEC seemed impressed. Certainly making all-frosh SEC team is a good achievement. Cal might be better fit culturally than some schools I imagine.

From Talia Goodman, On3sports:

These are some of the programs Wisconsin transfer Carter McCray is considering, but she's still open to new schools, she told

:
6-1 Center

UNC, Louisville, Cal, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Utah, West Virginia, Arizona
