Parity.

The NFL, the massive sports behemoth, tries to achieve it.

They give the worst teams the best pics.
They have a salary cap.

Without it, college sports will quickly devolve into 10 perennial winners, and a bunch of non-competitive losers whose roles are merely regular-season cannon fodder for these 10 winners. Wait, I think we're ALREADY there!

NIL as it currently exists, only worsens this problem. I support paying players, but not this way. A structured salary system for players would help solve it. Coaching and admin. staff salary limits would also help.

The free market promotes monopolies and it's no different with sports teams.

Parity is even more badly needed at the (ahem) amateur level.

There was never even a semblance of parity in college sports, especially in WBB. We had Furd with utter dominance of the Pac-12 during almost all of Tara's career, UConn's dominance over the entire NCAA, and Tennessee's before them. What changes is (a) because of payments, there will be a changing of the guard from schools with good degrees and history with a sport to big market and big money cities such as USC, UCLA, etc., and (b) with the transfer portal these changes will happen very fast and there will be few upsets as we saw in this year's NCAA tournaments, both men's and women's.
