Sounds like a great player, particularly on D.....the LSU folks on Reddit were very upset when she entered the portal. https://www.reddit.com/r/NCAAW/comments/1k5b9qu/mjracle_sheppard_in_the_portal/

That was a good find....it's a great intangible that Cal has brought in a player from LSU and from (the other) USC....
Obviously, a post complaining about "she isn't a big" is forthcoming, but still a great add...

She sounds like she's really strong on defense....fills the Jayda role. Also she's from Washington state so coming back to the west coast.... I'm really happy to have her on board.

edited to add this comment as an example from Reddit of the LSU fan's upset with her departure: "I've finally been hurt by the portal . Mjarcle added much needed defense to our guard rotation. And her offense was coming along. Man, she truly a high IQ player, something else we lacked. I'm genuinely sick about this one."

We have enough openings to take any very good player. But our offense will need some tweaks when she is in since she rarely shoots the three. Maybe she will actually end up playing more as a wing. She does look great going to the basket.

Rated a four-star recruit, 86th-overall ranked prospect, second-ranked player in Washington!

The below starting lineup sounds pretty good to me.

Morris 1
Sheppard 2
Twidale 3
Abigor 4
Walker 5

Cal needs to bring some offensive skill people in. At least three more transfers will hopefully replace much of the offense that the Bears lost from last season. Hopefully, the wing player, Barnes, rated #70 in the 2025 Recruit Class will add to our scoring, too.

Here is Sheppard's full bio from LSU website:

Sheppard was recruited to Montverde as well, so clearly has talent. This looks like a very good get.

Not really sure if Gabby's game is suited for the 4. I see Abigor and Walker most likely rotating at center.

Sorry, but it would be nice to allow the kids who were actually recruited to step up eh? I mean, come on....

Remaining power forwards in the portal can now see how they would slot into a very good line-up with us. Hopefully we still have enough NIL left to close those deals with the best candidates.

It would also be great not to have to play two freshmen as our starting and back-up point guards. Maybe we can sign one more. But Sheppard also looks so versatile that maybe she could also swing over there. And that could help with her future pro aspirations.

In any other recent year, Barnes would be highly anticipated right? Plus, there seems to be a tendency by some (no names of course,) to act like Puff is the equivalent of a 3 star, or just another player from SoCal. Player of the Year in California, 5 star? I mean, if we aren't going to be excited about an incoming 5 star, then what's the point??

Exactly. I'm excited about our recruits and would like to believe that we're excited about high school players who commit to Cal as freshmen and believe they add to the team. These two portal additions are certainly welcome, but it's not as though we don't also have some great players returning and talented new recruits as well. I'd like to see the newbies stay all four years! Go Bears.

I was thinking Sheppard might be a Kayla Williams PG replacement

Too risky to rely on an undersized freshman PG

One of the highest rated women's recruits of all time? I will take my chances, and/or live with the growing pains.
Whatever it took to get her to Cal, you have to figure it wasn't with the idea that she would be playing 12-15 minutes a game. I don't watch video because I know what I don't know, but if you don't find her to your liking, then that's definitely your prerogative.
She is an inch taller than UCLA's starting PG, Jones.
Haley Van Lith has her by 2 inches.

Have to remember that Morris is 5'5". Her toughest adjustment will be learning how best to defend the taller players in college. All freshmen need an adjustment period, although I do expect her to start. In London Jones first year, she played 20 minutes per game off of the bench. It took Leilani some time also to develop her game as a smaller point guard.

I will concede that I wish she was 5 inches taller, and there is a chance that she might find a tough match up in the Elite 8, and Cal might not make the Final 4.

Not sure why you are making such a big deal of this. As great as Van Lith has been, she is 5'9" and started as a combo guard with only 2 assists per game in 30 minutes as a freshman. Let Morris adjust before putting the pressure on of a Van Lith comparison. Van Lith has been a generational player, but even she had to grow over a considerable period. And if we are having defensive match-up problems, we are lucky that Sheppard may be able to swing over there.

I saw Van Lith listed at 5-7. I did not compare ability. If she sniffs Van Lith's stats, that would be wonderful.
How was I, or am I, making a "big deal of this." I didn't raise the issue of worrying about her size...please check the thread before coming down on me. I am excited she is coming to Cal...I think she is going to play a lot of minutes. I don't think Charmin is recruiting anyone to help at point, but I don't know that for sure. I hope she is the best Cal recruit ever!!!
The idea that I have the ability (or anyone here) to post something that is going to increase the pressure on a recruit is pretty amazing to me....

We shouldn't see them. As much as I believe Gabby will improve, if you watched her last year it's clear that she doesn't possess the skill set that Michelle had to be considered being used as a 4. If Charmin plays Gabby and Walker together, it would be very briefly strictly as two 5's.

Our biggest potential problem is not starting a freshman pg, because Morris will be good even while learning and adjusting to playing against bigger people. The biggest problem will be if we also have to go with an inexperienced freshman back-up pg. Hopefully, Sheppard can play that role as a combo guard, and might also start against some teams if there is a big match-up issue.

Help at point.

Don't sleep on incoming freshman, Grace McCallop, a 5'10 guard from Kansas.

"Grace is high-level two-way guard that can play both guard positions," Smith said. "She does a great job on both sides of the floor facilitating for her teammates and locking up the opposing team's best player.

She was also just named prom queen at her high school. lol. I follow our players on Instagram.

If we use Asha Thomas as a point of comparison, and it's just a discussion, so why not: she averaged 33 minutes a game her freshman year, and 34 minutes her Sr. year. IF, Puff can get in that ballpark, then hopefully this is a "first world problem," meaning way down the list of concerns, but fair.
And specifically to Sheppard: not likely that Charmin promises anything to anyone, but maybe she sold the chance of getting these kind of minutes as a reason to come to Cal...

SF, thanks for posting. Good that Grace can play some point.

Regarding my comment about Puff. First, of course I'm excited she's coming to Cal, but I think people put too much into "undersized" and not enough on "freshmen"

I'm sure people aren't paying that close attention to what I post about MBB and WBB but I ALWAYS state a concern about having a freshmen PG, regardless of size.

Also, I think all teams should have at least 2 PGs, and remember an injury to 1 means you have only 1 PG.

I did watch the entire McDonald AA game and was impressed with Puff. She played around 40% of the game and was very aggressive. She also was MVP in an All-Star game in the Philippines recently.

Anastasia can play point and she has one year of watching while recovering from an injury and another year playing as a backup. She's a high BBIQ type.

I haven't seen enough of her to make any judgements, except she doesn't strike me as a shooter nor scorer

Maybe PG is the right position for her

If my memory serves me correctly… when McCallop committed at PG there was some confusion based on so so offensive stats. A article shortly circulated how she completely shut down one of the top recruits in the country on defense during the EYBL. I think it was Chavez (former #1 recruit to Oklahoma)? Clay might know more than I do.

Always good to have defense like that on your roster.

that's why I compared her to Kayla Williams

Kayla was a huge part of our team and last season's team is a perfect example of how you need a minimum of two PGs on your roster. Last season we had two 5th year senior PGs.

Compare that to potentially having 2 freshmen PGs this upcoming season

That's why I'm hoping Sheppard can play some PG, even though she doesn't have a ton of PT overall, and not sure what position she played in those minutes
