out of the GCU timeout, did Cal forget to play defense as GCU gets a layup at 32 seconds and Cal calls another timout to (1) advance the ball? (2) get things right.

Cal 65-GCU 59
I presume we are about to get the free throw parade

67-59 after a GCU layup followed by a foul and 2 made Sheppard free throws. GCU ball. Timeout.

Cal wins 68-63.

GCU kept scoring at the end. Sheppard with 2-2 FTs and Maul with 1-2 FTs to hold them off.

Smith can't be happy with the defense down the stretch as GCU makes its last six shots - but, since I only seen the livestats play by play, so I don't know how good or bad the defense was. But, some of those baskets seemed to come with just a few seconds following a GCU timeout so very quickly off an inbounds pass - which is not good.
At least Cal stopped turning the ball over after starting the fourth with 5 turnovers.

Not sure why they are even having this tournament. There is no home team and nobody in the stands. And not many people are vacationing in Frisco.

good news: the bears finish with clutch plays to advance to 6-1 on the season heading into wednesday's sec battle with auburn (7-0)...naya ojuwku with 10 points & 9 boards in 16 minutes playing time, her pt should be doubled!!

bad news: this team is fundamentally flawed (which is a reflection of the coaching staff) with an unreal 24 turnovers including multiple moving screens (which wuz never properly taught to michelle onyiah during her time in berkeley) against a weak mid major program (the lopes are 1-5)

Those two stood out. Really liked Lola in this one. 3-4 on threes, 3 assists, 0 TO's, solid ball handling and worked hard on defense.

WVIT and I enjoyed talking to each other during the game. No loud piped in music and could turn off the sound whenever we wanted. Even had ice in our Diet Pepsis. We were in charge of our own game day experience.

Uh...I hope the learning experience was worth the cost of flights and hotel rooms. It probably was; all losses and close games are useful experience. Even so, Cal could have stuck around and played in the City or Sacramento or some such place.

I don't think they knew how poorly this tournament was going to be promoted when they signed-up for it. Nine teams involved.... November 24-27.

From Hoopfest website:

Participating Teams
This year's tournament will feature nine elite college programs, including:
  • Oregon
  • Auburn
  • Texas Tech
  • Cal
  • Grand Canyon
  • North Texas
  • Old Dominion
  • Saint Mary's (CA)
  • UT San Antonio

Naya had fouls as did Sakima......The number of turnovers were about the same for Grand Canyon. GCU shot very well the last 3 minutes of the game or Cal would have won by 10-12 points. It's so rude to make negative comments about the coaching staff year after year. I should have known better and not read your post, which I have done in the past. GO BEARS!!!!!

ashfield, it's too bad ur not a berkeley grad and incapable of having a factual intellectual conversation re: the wbb program

charmin's career head coach conference record is 29-68 or .299 which would get u fired at any other school in the nation...the annual # of turnovers is a function of not effectively teaching fundamentals & developing players which is a result of a revolving door of assistant coaches

smith makes almost just south of $500,000 despite a losing track record and wuz remarkably extended by the financially clueless jennifer simon-o'neil who is on her last legs in berkeley but not before the wbb program plays another season in a poorly marketed empty haas except for the 2 dozen sr citizens that wear earplugs when hip hop music (which the players love) is played over the speakers

per the latest released released financials cal wbb had revenues of $1,129,205 vs expenses of $6,140,136, the program is losing in excess of $5,000,000+ annually which is NOT sustainable at a time when berkeley is facing existential financial challenges from reduced state and federal funding

honestly don't give 2 ***** wut u think of my posts but ur close minded outta touch fandom that doesn't aspire to greater heights is a symptom of the failing attendance numbers at haas pavilion at a time that the wbna including the franchise in san francisco are experiencing unprecedented record setting attendance sell outs!!

I think it's a bit tough when playing in such a sterile environment.

I was able to watch on Flo because I subscribed to watch the Ballers.

Only was able to see the last few minutes.

Judging from the box score, sloppy game from both teams - to combine for almost 50 TOs is mind boggling.

The Bear need to button it up in the next game.

Puff, while she took another early shot clock 3 (a miss that led to a GC basket), she also hit the 3 that pretty much decided the game...so again, take the good with the bad.

This team plays with a lot of effort - I attribute this to the players and the coaching staff.

Generally speaking, I do not think TOs are the fault of the coach - the coach is not on the court. However, the trend should trend towards less TOs as the season goes on through film work and building chemistry. Keep in mind, the players that play the most minutes are new to each other. Without that chemistry, TOs are going to happen. Plus, our PG is a freshman and there is a learning curve. I would hope the TOs decrease as players acquaint themselves with each other.

Good to see Naya have a nice game (at this point, she should play over Claudia - good to see 16 minutes) and Lola shot it well and had 3 A and 0 TOs <<< only player to NOT have a TO), number-wise (again, I did not see most of the game, so basing this on the box score).

Go Bears!

Charmin started with an empty cupboard (except Jaelyn Brown for one year) then could barely field a team during the COVID-19 season. In her last three seasons her conference records have been 4-14, 7-11, and 12-6 which reflect steady improvement. I think she's earned her position at Cal.

Yes I was ar Annharbor Bear's watching the game. And i got a diet pepsi without going to the concession stand.

Refs called a lot of ticky fouls on both sides. Especially on screens. Must have set a record.

No attendance, a little over 200. As AHBear said, no home team (unless there was a team we are not playing scheduled later).

The Texas women on Cal's team didn't have great nights.

Guess who leads the Cal team in 3 point per centage. Yes, it is Lola. Said after the first practice she had vastly improved her three point shooting. She still shoots from mostly the corner.

Hope to back up there today.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
stu, charmin started with an "empty cupboard" because players who knew her as an assistant coach opted to leave and her strategically unwise recruiting decision to recruit half a dozen tiny undersized guards who could not get their shots off against defenders with length and/or play d1 defense at a high level

look u can appreciate smith as a good person but also recognize that her abysmal track record (other than last season) is 100% due to her decision making, it's not due to discrimination or victimhood...it wuz very sad for me to hear directly from michelle onyiah prior to last season at a football game that her foul problems wuz a result of "refs picking on her" which is wildly delusional unfounded paranoia...when i asked michelle if she had spoken to her coach (presumably the voice of reason) about this, she said yeah coach wuz in agreement, basically onyiah's time in berkeley wuz wasted because of the head coach not teaching her star player that her constant foul issues wuz a direct result of her poor decision making on the floor (not being successfully taught the principle of verticality) and not some super secret agenda of the far right refs to call fouls on woke young black women...and that's why shocky started the 60,000+ view michelle onyiah thread which documented every single foul called against her in the 2024 season which clearly showed there wuz no agenda against her

cal wbb is a very FUN product, it's a shame that berkeley students & a much younger fanbase have not been successfully marketed to increase the sad gameday attendance levels at haas pavilion which is 100% the ongoing failure of worthless bureaucrat JENNIFER SIMON O'NEIL

Shocky, you may have valid points about Charmin's early years as a coach, but the last three years things have looked much better. Maybe it's time to reevaluate, right?

OTOH, last night's game was torture to watch. One of the sloppiest games I've seen in a long time. Both teams guilty of playing bad basketball. And while I'm a fan of Charmin, I must admit that either she didn't have this team prepared to play, or their focus on playing basketball was nowhere to be found. Especially on offense, some of the passes being made by us were so careless. It better be cleaned up by Wednesday or it won't be a good night.

Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
redless, ima overall fan of charmin but also recognize that she fails to teach fundamentally sound basketball, every year the bears lead the nation in moving foul screens which is something that can be taught at the grade school level

and the ongoing turnovers (which is not a function of "inexperience," look at last year's turnover levels with 4th & 5th year college players) is symptomatic of poor coaching which has now institutionalized that it's ok to make a lotta turnovers every single game

last year smith failed to play michelle & gabby at the same time because of her narrow mindset re: playing 2 bigs at the same time, this season naya is also seeing her playing time (which should be 30+ minutes per game) limited by this non innovative failed coaching formula of how many bigs can be on the floor at the same time

gcu wuz woefully undersized compared to future acc opponents yet the bears only out rebounded the lopes 30 to 29, that's just poor coaching decision making

From Calbears.com story:

"I'm glad we were able to come away with a win, but I didn't necessarily feel good about how we played," Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. "I thought we turned the ball over too much, and we know that we need to be better. We had some early foul trouble and it was good to see Naya get in there and be able to help us out offensively and continue to get some more people involved on the perimeter. Lola and Gisella are doing a good job for us. I do think we have depth, but we just need to play better collectively."

Give credit to the GCU defense for causing those turnovers. They seemed to attack Puff Morris most often (she had 5 of the 24 turnovers). She sometimes holds the ball too long and is a bit erratic dribbling. Learning curve.

Likewise, the Cal defense caused 23 turnovers led by 6 for the Antelopes' leading scorer, Anisa Jeffries (17 points).

SFCB72, I consistently respect your posts. But this time I disagree with you. I didn't see anything extraordinary that GCU did to make our team play the way it did. We've seen Puff attacked by other defenses already this season, and although she hasn't been perfect it was nothing to compared to last night. In addition Lulu made some passes that were just too casual. And Claudia, who has a good sense of passing the ball, needs to correct her discretion of when and when not to deliver the ball. A couple of her passes last night were atrocious. It was just a sloppy performance by our team, it needs to be corrected.

Maybe they took GCU too lightly given their record. It happens in basketball. Or maybe they were looking ahead to playing an undefeated Auburn team. That happens too.

Charmin has plenty of material to work with in practice today. And when the team watches the game film from last night, they'll be reminded about their errors.

It's funny that nobody is talking about Mjracle Sheppard's productive game after sitting out the St. Mary's game with an injury. She was the Bears' leading scorer last night with 15 points in 28 minutes! Plus 2 steals and a blocked shot.

Some would rather dwell on the negative. Oh well.

^ jenny, wut's ur explanation why cal women's basketball attendance is ABYSMAL & what specific marketing steps are being taken to build the fanbase particularly with students and younger fans??

the truth is that sending emails to football tix buyers is never gonna move the needle, 95% of that older segment has never been to a wbb game and probably will never do so, those emails are immediately deleted

you 100% failed in hiring an unlikeable arrogant (perhaps a reflection of urself??) marketing director in markeisha everrett who alienated both everybody internally and externally with her lousy work ethic and non innovative vision...she basically got pushed out the door above ur pay grade when she tole the leader of cal's nil program that she wuz "too busy" to work on the proposed billboards when got done anyways without her to resounding success

ur the one truly EVIL person in the athletic department who honestly should be in prison along with mckeever for ur role in enabling and failing to protect the suicidal women's swimmers...and u learned nothing from that mistake, u got a soccer coach who has also been accused of bullying by his players & then hired a crazy azz softball coach who also bullied her staff/players which resulted in the program imploding

the truth is that when ur shown the door in berkeley, ur gonna be unemployable with ur toxic personality & disgraceful resume

but in the meantime, what's ur plan to sell tixs for the deserving cal women's basketball program??

Last year Lola missed almost all her three attempts to the point coach took away her green light. I was surprised as I thought her shooting form was fundamentally sound.

But someone here pointed out that she was bringing the ball up across her body which I couldn't see from my angle but could she on YouTube when I slowed the speed down

This year her shot looked better as she shoots it at the right arc with a perfect backspin, however I couldn't clearly see if she corrected the ball path

I saw an IG post that looked like good form but view was from the back so I can't 100% confirm her ball path.

Her results are vastly improved although I think she should only take open catch and shoot threes as she has the inconsistency of someone who rebuilt her shot

Considering her improvement in one year, she must have worked with a shooting coach in the off season and put in a lot of work. She might have the talent to be a very good shooter.

Barnes, who is a good shooter uses a "thumb flick" with her off hand. A player often develops this when they are younger for more power, but it's not ideal as you should shoot the ball entirely with one hand. If she can eliminate it in the off season I think it will improve her shot

Isis has a side spin on her ball, but she is the most athletic of our players.

Actually Lulu's form isn't perfect as she leans into her shot a little too much but she has a smooth shot from her legs, body, arms, and release and is a natural shooting talent.

Sheppard and Maul have an unusual form that I haven't figured out yet
