Cal faces Cal Poly SLO Sunday afternoon in its final non-conference game. This team is extremely young and rebuilding with no seniors on their roster. It's basically a frosh-soph team with 10 of its 11-player rotation made up of 8 sophomores & 2 freshmen. One junior starts.
2025-26 Women's Basketball Roster - Cal Poly

The Mustangs are fortunate that they possess two exceptional youngsters in soph SG Vanessa McManus and frosh PF Charish Thompson. These two combine for 59.3% of CP's scoring. Unfortunately, McManus has missed their last two games and Thompson was MIA for the last one. USC crushed them by 47 points without both of them. I don't know their respective health status reports for tomorrow so I will assume that they will be available.

2025-2026 Cal Poly Women's Basketball

I will review their starting lineup. Vanessa McManus is a 5-7 soph SG who plays 32 minutes per game. She's from Staten Island, New York and averages 20.1 points and 5.7 rebounds. Both are tops for the Mustangs. McManus is their top three-point shooter with 16 made over 10 games. Charish Thompson receives 29 minutes of PT. She's a 6-0 frosh PF from Texas. She scores 14.8 points & grabs 5.5 boards per game. Statistically, she is the best shooter on the Mustangs with the top FG%, 3-PT% & FT%. It would be an interesting matchup if Cal's 6-0 Texas freshman PF, Taylor Barnes, gets the assignment tomorrow.

Cal Poly doesn't have a traditional center so Nora Perez, a soph 6-0 PF from Spain, starts there. She contributes 6.6 points plus 4.7 rebounds. Madison Butcher is a 5-10 junior SG who adds 4.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per contest. She is 2nd in treys with 10. The starting point guard is Alana Goosby, a 5-7 soph who directs the team for 29 minutes and generates 4 assists per game. Her numbers are 3.6 ppg + 3.7 rpg.

Shanelle Stires is in her 4th season as the HC of Cal Poly. She likes to use her bench to keep her players fresh. A 5-10 soph SG, Jordan Billing, from Queensland, Australia, is one of the 1st to enter. She averages 2.3 points & 1.2 boards. Gabby Robinson is a 5-10 soph PG who gets 20 minutes of playing time while averaging 1.9 ppg & 1.4 rpg. A third PG is 5-9 soph Ana Hidalgo (19m) from Spain. She produces 3.1 points for the offense. Cal Poly's tallest post is 6-3 soph Gillian Bears from Spokane, WA. She tallies 2.5 points + 2.6 boards per outing. Another inside presence is 6-1 soph PF, Avery Knapp, from San Ramon Valley HS, who contributes 4.0 points & 2.0 rebounds to the cause. Finally, Katie Peiffer is a 5-10 freshman SG from Texas who posts 4.5 ppg.

The Mustang's primary weaknesses are a lack of size and sloppy ball-handling. Cal Poly is typically outrebounded (33.5/g) and gives up lots of easy baskets inside. Their young guards also yield 23.1 turnovers per game while registering only 9.9 assists. This is not a productive ratio for much success.

If Cal Poly has their dynamic duo tomorrow, I predict Cal to triumph 77-52. If star McManus is MIA, I foresee a final score of 80-40. GO BEARS!

Cal cannot shoot the ball and trail to Cal Poly early. At the end of one quarter, 15-10, Cal has the lead. Ojukwu sparked the offense with 5 points in 5 minutes. Sheppard & Twidale also have 5 points each. The rest of the team looks sleepy. Vanessa McManus has 7 already for Cal Poly. Maul adds 5 to begin the second period.

Walker & Barnes has 5 of Cal's 6 TOs and look terrible. Take both out of the game-they have 1 basket between them. Charmin Smith needs to replace w/ Ojukwu & Maul! The team is simply passing the ball around the perimeter. The best overall game has come from Lulu with 11 points and 5 assists at intermission. Bears are up by 12 but McManus & Thompson had to sit out most of the second quarter with two PFs each. If they get hot, the dozen point gap can be closed quickly. The Mustangs have surprisingly outrebounded the Bears, 21-20, so far.
Cal is on track for only 68 points against Cal Poly. Bears should be close to eighty vs the Mustangs.

Bear's defense has only forced 12 TOs midway through the 3rd. Ojukwu & Maul have played 7 & 9 minutes, respectively. Cal breaksout in third stanza with 27 points to open things up, 61-37!

Cal (9-5) blows out Cal Poly SLO, 91-50. Lulu led the way with 19 points on 5 treys and 6 assists. Naya converted 7 of 8 shots for 16 points in 18 minutes. Miracle made 5 of 7 for 11 points. Both Gisella & Sakima registered 9 on 4-7 & 4-6 shooting, respectively. Ojukwu & Maul combined for 25 points on 11 of 15 shooting (73.3%) off of the bench. GO BEARS!.

Claudia Langarita does seem to be MIA. She could have seen action today. Is she injured?

Claudia has been injured forever. My guess is they let her go back to spain for the break since she wasn't going to play.

I'm guessing illness because she attended the team's "Secret Santa Christmas party" on Friday night. Saw her in the videos posted on both Instagram and Facebook.

The Bears finish 2025 with a 16-1 record at Haas. That was a fun game. Hit the 90 point mark and won by over 40. Really strong second half after the team finally woke up from their holiday slumber. Better crowd than I expected especially with students gone. Only a skeleton of a band, four from the cheer team, no one from the dance team, no yell leaders and -- sadly -- no Oski .Everybody played and Isis had some a couple of nice moments. Naya and Gisella had good games. Free throw shooting was abysmal but turnovers were low and assists high (25-10). Bring on the ACC!

Good to see Cal come alive in the second half (as they bloody well should have). I hope Naya sticks around; are we her fourth team?

(Fourth. I really dislike this system, but I'm happy to have Naya at Cal.)

cal poly berkeley golden bears 91
cal poly slo mustangs 50

this is a wildly entertaining FUN team (9-5) to watch that dominates mid major schools but throughout the coach smith era gets outcoached in close games against elite competition

current back up 5 naya ojuwku (who is a natural 4) played another phenomenal game once again in limited minutes (18, sakima played the other 22 minutes) with 16 points on an unreal 7 of 8 field goals along with 5 boards & ZERO turnovers

naya's limited minutes are not a function of some mysterious illness, she's 100% healthy & it's a poorly conceived playing rotation by the staff that don't play her 10 minutes at the 5 & 20 minutes at the 4 (with walker on the floor too) every game...it's a shame that charmin don't consult with tara on how to get her 2 best post players on the floor at the same time (which will ultimately just waste their talents just like she did with michelle & gabby last season)

real talk: if the twin towers don't both play 30 mpg this team got zero chance of making the ncca tournament (and would not be surprised if naya hits the transfer portal after this season)

I would love to hear the coaches' perspective on why she doesn't play more.

You're a coach. You tell me why. Random sample of Claudia's recent games:

vs. Charlotte
14 minutes
4 points
1 rebound
1 assist
2 turnovers
4 fouls

vs. Harvard
2 minutes
0 points
2 turnovers
1 foul

vs. St. Mary's
9 minutes
8 points
1 rebound
2 turnovers
1 foul

We need rebounders with only 2 post players and to reduce the number of turnovers per game.

72, that's a pretty funny "random" sampling of naya's game stats!!

let's take a look at the season stats for field goal percentages, ok?

naya: 58.5% despite playing only 10 minutes per game
sakima: 54.1%
mjracle: 47.9%
taylor: 40..8%
giselle: 39.3%
lulu: 37.2%
puff: 33.0%
lola: 30.0%

ojuwku is the team's MOST EFFICIENT SCORER at the half way point in the season

the reality is that the head coach gotta .299 career conference winning record (29-68) heading into the acc season & has been outcoached in each of the bears 5 close losses this season

naya is being criminally underutilized & it would not be surprising if she enters the portal after this season, keep in mind that sakima & mjracle will be outta eligibility which means it will be another potential total rebuild in berkeley next season

yet worthless bureaucrat ****tard jennifer simon-o'neil extended charmin a couple more years right before chancellor lyons took office, meanwhile there's zero growth in the cal wbb attendance despite last season's success & the wnba team across the bay selling out their games at chase arena

naya's natural position is at the 4, not playing her 30+ mpg is just really bad coaching

Ojukwu has cut way down on her personal fouls which was a problem early in the season. I have stated all along that if Sakima Walker gets 25 minutes and Naya Ojukwu gets 15, both will score in double figures every night. If she gets 20 minutes, she will lead the team in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (7/g). She's only a soph and Walker is the only senior that gets meaningful PT. Charmin should treat Naya better so that she doesn't enter the transfer portal again and develops her potential into stardom.

Both Naya Ojukwu and Gisella Maul rally the team every time that they enter the game off of the bench. They both are key ingredients to any success that this team will experience this season.

I think we are clearly heading for the WNIT with the current approach and should try something different. Naya scores and rebounds and provides some increased energy. I would also start playing Grace more so that she does not leave and go some place else.

You should clarify that those are Claudia's stats, not Naya's.

I think this just might happen if Lola continues to pass up open looks and hesitates to shoot. Grace has no such problem if yesterday is any indication. We need more scoring from the guards.

Statistics do not measure defense, or being in the right spot on the floor, or executing game plans effectively.

That's why I would love to hear the coaches' perspective, which of course is highly unlikely.

Offensively, clearly she's an effective player, but there's much more to the game than that.
