The current version of NC State is a bad matchup for Cal. The Bears defeated the Wolfpack (78-71) in Berkeley in one of the best games of last season. Three of their top four scorers graduated. They were guard/wings that shot from the outside.

The transfer portal landed them perhaps the MVP of the SEC from Vandy. Khamil Pierre is a 6-2 athletic post that has a fade-away jump shot and is a rebounding machine. She leads NCS in scoring w/14.8 points & rebounding w/ 12.3 boards per game.

This was what the young lady accomplished as a sophomore at Vanderbilt. Pierre averaged 20.4 points off of 49.8% shooting, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game across 30.5 minutes played per game. SEC Statistical Rankings: #1 in field goals made (273), #2 in steals per game (2.9), #3 in rebounds per game (9.6), #4 in points per game (20.4) and #6 in field goal percentage (49.8).

2025-26 Women's Basketball Roster - NC State University Athletics

If one examines their roster, they are stacked with four post players. Three are in their regular 8 player rotation and they are outrebounding their opposition by a margin of approximately 11 boards per contest. [47.4 to 36.6]

Overall_Stats__Jan.__1_.pdf

Their roster has no seniors. The Wolfpack has 4 juniors, 3 sophs & a freshman in their eight-player rotation. I watched the Stanford blowout by 38 points on New Year's Day. The Cardinal was missing Chloe Clardy their combo guard that averages 12 ppg. The Bears have PG Puff Morris MIA tomorrow. North Carolina obtains the majority of their offense from four double-digit scorers. A trio average 14 points + each, and the 6-6 soph Swedish forward contributes 11.2 points & 7.8 rebounds.

The one factor in Cal's favor is that NC State is not an elite defensive team. They don't force a lot of turnovers (12.1). If the Bears can hit their outside shots, they could stay in this game. The Wolfpack yields 63.6 points per game! Cal needs to play tough defense and compete on the boards. NCS is 10-4 overall but is 3-0 in the ACC. They have to be feeling good about themselves after their best game of the season vs Stanford.

I don't see a close outcome: Wolfpack 77, Bears 62. Maybe Cal should assign Naya Ojukwu (6-1) on Khamil Pierre (6-2) because Sakima Walker doesn't have the agility and quickness to stay in front of her. Lulu Twidale has been in a shooting slump all season (except for Cal Poly). She needs to go for 15-20 points on Sunday to make things interesting. I could envision North Carolina State coming out flat. GO BEARS!

"If one examines their roster, they are stacked with four post players. Three are in their regular 8 player rotation..."

Good reporting S71.

But I'm puzzled - according to some of the comments on this board, nobody plays with two post players at the same time anymore. If three of their post players are in their 8 player rotation, then NC State is REALLY breaking the norm. But I noticed their 10-4, How can this be possible?

Thank you for this research, analysis and brave prediction. This time and every time. I may not always agree, Schroeder71, but I want you to know i ALWAYS appreciate.

NC State plays two posts players at a time. Pierre can play at the 3, 4 or 5 spot.

We once played a rotating group of three great posts - Brandon, Caldwell and Grey - and none of them had an outside shot. And three point shooting was also in effect back then.

Who is the male play by play guy - because I don't think he knows much about basketball or these two programs.

NC State has 2 turnovers while Cal has 11 at halftime. Donez has 3 turnovers in 5 minutes. Ojukwu has three but two were offensive fouls trying to get position to inside. Naya is 4 for 4 from the field. Swedish 6-6 post, Trygger, S is not playing for the Wolfpack (ill). Bears are doing great on offense and rebounding. They need Miracle Sheppard to score to win this ballgame. I would play Maul vs Pierre (13 points). Gisella has zero fouls.

He just said Cal's visit to Chapel Hill was Cal's first ever - which is just wrong. I went to a Cal game at UNC back in the late 90s when Stanley was the coach.

Confused by this stoppage for injured Pack player when Cal is on offense. I thought the refs wouldn't stop play when the other team had an advantage.

Officials are very inconsistent about that. I've seen them blow the whistle for an injury on the other team when Cal has the ball, but it never seems to happen if one of our players is rolling around injured and the opponent has the ball.

Well, those last five minutes of the third quarter were discouraging.
Pack's Pierre is as advertised and Cal goes into one of those extended droughts - was it the full last five minutes?

Yikes.

The color commentator - Kelly - has it right - Cal is overpassing looking for the next "better" option but that's not working. And I wonder if some of the players are passing up shots because of a lack of confidence rather than intent to get a better shot for the team.

NC State ahead in points off of TO's 16-3. The one problem we cannot seem to solve.

Twidale missed that point blank shot at the 2min mark which would of made it a 6pt game. Then next trip down floor, turnover on bad entry pass..

Fitting that this game would end on our 20th turnover. Otherwise a great effort, especially on the boards.

Can someone explain honestly why Charmin's teams are always such high-turnover teams? They committed 20 today to NC State's 6. That means they are going to attempt considerably fewer shots and have less chances to win. NC State scored nearly a third of its points off Cal turnovers. This just can't happen. Why is Cal always so careless with the ball? Is there a basketball explanation?

Fatigue's gonna happen with a 7 player rotation. Grace McCallop was highly touted coming in. Don't think we've done a good job of preparing her this season. Especially when Lola's offensive game is extremely limited. This one is on Charmin.

Missing Puff required Charmin to use Mjracle at point and Lola as her back-up these last two games.

How would you have prepared Grace this season? Too many tight games this season, you go for the more experienced player off the bench.

Grace has had some playing time and will get more as the season continues.

Four of our players logged between 35 and 40 minutes. My guess is foul trouble is the only reason the number wasn't five.

I think that was also said about Zhara King last year. But it never happened. You develop players by putting them on the court. And if you don't, you start all over again next year after they transfer.

Same with Naya. Put her on the court, and, amazingly, she scores. Keep her on the bench, and she doesn't.

north carolina state wolfpack 71
california golden bears 60

in the 1st half a wolfpack player throws a ball outta bounds, their head coach screams at her for a full 45 seconds with hand gesticulations while getting red faced & looking kinda like he's having an aneurysm or something...nc state had 6 turnovers in the game, it's clear that the message is that wasted possessions are unacceptable in the pack program

on the other side of the court the bears (9-7) commit 20 turnovers (the majority of them unforced, just poor passing fundamentals, moving screens, etc) with coach smith & her staff literally not saying anything or turning them into teaching moments...cal wbb has INSTITUTIONALIZED turnovers, giving an opponent an extra 10+ more possessions is no big deal which is why this team might lose every acc game this season

still no naya or saikma on the court at the same time playing zone defense which resulted in the majority of the wolfpack points being mostly uncontested shots from around the bucket...it's just a flawed playing rotation with lulu & taylor playing a fatigued 40 minutes while the remarkably underutilized naya ojuwku played only 21 minutes but still managed to score 14 points on 7 of 8 field goals

yeah this is really bad coaching but a chancellor lyons enabled co athletic director worthless bureaucrat jennifer simon-'o'neil extended charmin until 2030 after last season despite no credible job offers elsewhere among the power conferences

amateur hour coaching in berkeley (these players deserve better)#

For starters she could have given Grace some of Lola's minutes in some of those games. No disrespect to Lola - she plays hard. But with a 7 man rotation Lola played a total of 6 MINUTES today. How do you explain that? I root for Cal. There's a lot I like about Charmin. But like anyone else she's not above criticism. As a coach she needs to be more innovative. It shouldn't be sugar coated.

I'm not normally a fan of playing two posts but with Puff out maybe we should consider it. Naya can score but has trouble defending bigger posts so maybe she'd do better at forward. Not good for spacing but we're not hitting a lot of threes anyway.

A good part of that is just turning the ball over too many times.

Cal lost because of 20 turnovers that resulted in NC State getting 23 points. Bears shot well and outrebounded the Wolfpack, 42-28. Khahil Pierre notched 21 points for the home team. They only turned the ball over 6 times.

The game was close until a 15-1 run by the Wolfpack during the 3rd quarter created an eleven-point margin. Bears stayed even in the final period. Cal appears to run out of gas in the second half of these tight games against quality teams. Until Charmin Smith can find the missing link, this Cal squad will not get over the hump. The same behavior is repeating itself loss after loss.

I think Mjracle went out after picking up her 4th foul. Too bad, she was our only player with a positive +/- today.
