Eye for talent

One thing Charmin has shown is an eye for talent. Mostly , players sitting on the bench of very good teams who have a lot of talent. Marta was one of those. but so was Mjaricle, Sakima, and Gisella. Last year it was Jayda and Kayla. i didn't include Ioanna and Naya as they weren't sitting on the bench.

So who knows who they have their eye on this year. If you are into stats then you will be disappointed. We need a defensive center. More power if they can score.

Second thing I would like to talk about is the improvement of individuals with their outside shooting. From Lelani, to Lulu, to Gisella. And I hope we will see it in Taylor. Plus Lola. I don't think Charmin is the instructor but she knows someone who is.

This is a great point, sometimes just analyzing a game completely with stats can be oversimplified and doesn't tell the whole story.

Interesting about the shooting. Gisella has been fantastic, but watching yesterday's game it seemed like we were really having trouble shooting the ball. I don't know if it was the arena, the travel factor, or what but watching our team shoot, it almost felt like the ball had too much air in it. Some of are misses were way off. By the fourth quarter, Claudia was passing up wide open looks, even from inside the 3 point stripe, it appeared that late in the game our players had lost their confidence and many times were hesitant to shoot. Just wondering if anyone else noticed that.

Well.. she was 0-3 at that point including an airball. I don't think I'd want her to shoot either.

It really looks like Donez does not want to shoot. She passes up open shot after open shot that she should be comfortable with taking. I know the philosophy is not to take a good shot when there is a better one available - hence why the team, as a whole, passes around a lot - but there are times when Donez seems to pass up a good shot in favor of a player with no shot.

My impression is that she "thinks" too much about that open shot. Her 3-pointer yesterday gave her no time to think about it, and the expectation level was very low. She needs to treat all her shots going forward like that one. Relax. Shoot it. Maybe make it. Maybe not. Maybe get a rebound. Shoot again.

The only problem with this is, that if I'm a coach and see this I realize we're basically playing 4 vs. 5 on the offensive end. At some point, if she's that wide open she either has to shoot or else she shouldn't be in the game.

Sometimes I feel just taking good shots would be better than risking turnovers looking for better shots.

The 4 v 5 was how it seemed a lot of the time when Donez was on the court last year and still some times this season.

Let's hope we get Morris/Barnes sightings soon.

The WBB has Langarita and the MBB has Kocantas.

Lola is pretty good from the corner. She won't pass that up. and she is much improved from last year.

Absolutely. In most cases, any player who is left wide open within 15 feet, and has ample time to shoot has to do so to keep the defense honest. I agree that Claudia had good intentions by holding back, but at a certain point not shooting, (especially by a player who is known to be a decent shooter), becomes counter productive.

Claudia understands the game, can pass, and doesn't get pushed around. A few years ago when she was healthy she shot .494 overall and .333 on threes. I think Ilic would be a better comparison.

Claudia doesn't get pushed around but hasn't been able to make a basket. At Ilic can score.

To me the corner 3 is the toughest shot in college BB because it's harder to judge the distance and you don't have the benefit of an off shot hitting the backboard and going in.

NBA is different as the corner shot is the shortest three point shot

But in both college and pros it's one of the most important shots on the court because of court spacing

Easiest 3 is top of the key

The corner three is shorter, and percentages show that it is an easier shot.

The point about the top of the key is true for less experienced players, I think, because the backboard offers a sense of perspective unavailable from the corner. That said, good shooters focus on the rim, and with enough reps, the absence of the backboard for perspective isn't as issue.
HoopDreams

the corner 3 is a higher percentage shot in games PARTLY because it's more often less contested.

And you're right because the college MEN's corner 3 is also a foot shorter so requires less power and the ball can be shot at a higher arc. BUT the college WOMEN's 3 are the same at 20'9" all around (same as HS line)

For some shooters (maybe less experienced players) the top of the key or 45 degree shots are easier. I think it's because you can judge the distance better (and its slightly more forgiving if you shoot short or long). Have you ever shot 3s with no net? It's even worse.

For me playing on courts with the 19'9" all around there is no technical advantage at the corner, and prefer shooting from 45 to 45 degrees

Also, it goes without saying that some players develop a "favorite 3 point shot" location on the floor that simply feels right to them, so that comes into play as well.

I always felt more comfortable near the top of the key than the corner. Hopefully Lola will expand her range.

I always feel most comfortable in a chairback watching someone with talent shoot threes.
