Adja Kane, a 21 year old 6'3" French professional has signed with SMU. Kane was selected in the third round of the 2025 WNBA Draft by the New York Liberty, but did not sign with them. This year, her rights were obtained by the Toronto Tempo as the 17th player picked in the 2026 WNBA expansion draft. She has now picked SMU over that offer. Go where the money is.

Thanks for that. Great argument for reforming the college system.

..or expand the minimum salaries of a 2nd or 3rd rounder to more than we she would get from NIL.

We are losing the uniqueness of this situation: there is no "early entry" to the WNBA...the decision about whether to stay for the women isn't really a thing yet .

FYI: International players (including those in Europe) are eligible for the WNBA draft if they are at least 20 years old during the draft calendar year, born/residing outside the US, and have never played college basketball in the US…

The odds of a third-round pick making a WNBA roster are slim to none. Even without NIL, probably a much better decision to get a college education and give the W a shot later on. Getting cut one week into camp and losing college eligibility is not an ideal outcome.

That's why Crooks is smart to take the $$ now since she may well not make the WNBA.

Don't disagree. But I doubt that a 21 year old old French professional is going to SMU with plans to graduate.
