for many years sequoia / kings canyon parks were our summertime happy place. on one occasion, after the usual day hikes, cruising back down a twisty mountain, a funny thing happened: dodge van's steering "worm gear" snapped, shooting us out of control towards a cliff. but luckily DMV's railing bounced us back on the road. "Three Rivers" aaa towing service fixed it, after <mumble> leisurely days thumbing around the park.

Of all the car problems I've had in 60 years of driving none topped total loss of steering. One came close: when I was 16 a power steering hose on my 1958 Chrysler blew out. The windshield was covered with opaque hydraulic fluid so I had to steer the 5000 lb car off the freeway with no power and my head sticking out of the window.
Just a few years later I was braking hard in my Renault R8 and the driver's seat broke loose from the floor. Fortunately I am tall and the car was short so I could keep my foot on the brake while basically sitting in the back seat.
What a pleasure to finally get a job and be able to buy a presentable car!
