I said Anna Lagonikiki earlier but was mistaken

She's Albina Jevovic (6-4 C freshman from Serbia)

now I mixed the names ... I think the player I was seeing was Albina Syla, 6-4 junior from Finland. it's going to take me a bit to learn the players and their names

#12 Albina Syla from Finland started.

#14 Jovana Jevtovic from Serbia came off the bench.

Both are tall, slender, and blond.

UCLA had two reserves returning and everyone else is new. The chemistry problem is the same for both teams. Okafor is a freshman from Spain.

To lose at home by 34 points is an embarrassment. The UCLA postgame press conference made it evident that they played Cal to stop their treys. The Bears were barely mentioned in the interviews. Their guard mentioned Cal had good players in a couple of areas but then smiled at post Betts. It seemed to indicate that the strength was not inside.

I believe that the USC matchup will likely be worse at the Staples Center. Troy possesses much more talent. I wish that I could find a box score to see which Cal players got meaningful minutes. It sounded as if one (or maybe two) newbies out of seven made positive impressions. Some didn't play while others barely saw the court. I was shocked to see that Zara Russell didn't see significant action.

I can't find a box score but I was at the game.

Starters: Ruby Perkins, Lulu Twidale, Gisella Maul, Taylor Barnes, Albina Syla
Significant time: Shannon Dowell, Jovana Jevtovic, Naya Ojukwu
A few minutes: Zara Russell, Anastasia Drosouni
DNP (as far as I could see): Mjracle Sheppard, Anna Lagonikaki, Carly Amborn, Sofia Bowes

Here's the box score for everyone interested! I don't know that I'd draw too many conclusions from the final score. The game felt within reach for a while, but we didn't make open shots and they converted open shots at a very high rate (69% from 3). Timely baskets and runs out the game out of reach. I was disappointed walking out of the arena, but all respect to the reigning national champs, they came in and thumped us.

Lots of basketball left and while it didn't come together tonight l, I see the vision for this team and hope they'll continue to find their footing in the coming weeks!

Ruby was electric and I thought the offense generated some good looks that we just didn't finish. The quick 9-0 run (and the extension of this run into the second half) after we got the lead down to 7 was backbreaker and we didn't really recover after that. I'm intrigued at seeing some Naya at the 4 minutes, want to see Taylor Barnes catching the ball in her spots, and am looking forward to seeing if Lulu's midrange game can be dangerous when teams run her off the line.

Let's hope that this is a good wake up call for the USC game in over a week! Go bears!

I was initially concerned about our inability to hit any shots. But then I also looked at the shooting percentages that we gave up. Now there is a bad combination. It is a first game and an exhibition game, so get the USC game over with, and then prepare for the season.

Looking strictly at the player plus/minuses, looks like we did best with Maul and Jevtovic on the floor. Also, like Perkins with 5 assists and only one TO. Maul with 6 assists and 2 TO's is also a good individual stat.

Another crazy number - their bench scored 40 points against our bench's 11. But that means that our starters scored 42 while theirs scored 47.

Guess what? Neither this game nor the $c game count against our record. But they do give Coach Smith tremendous coaching material for the season going forward. If you want to be the best, you have to play the best. I give her credit for scheduling these two games.

I think the players do too. They will learn what they need to work on and improve and carry that forward as the season progresses.

I'm excited about the potential once they get a few games together under their belts. Let's go!!

I was really happy that last night's exhibition game happened. You don't get better by playing Vanguard as your only warm up. Charmin is challenging her players and some of them are getting a real taste of what D1 champions play like. UCLA lost a lot to graduation, but brought in 7 transfers, clearly lots of talent.

As for the Bears, a lot of what I saw was just a bunch of players working out the kinks, getting up to speed with the game (Ruby was really impressive, quick and fierce. Lulu was missing shots and G didn't get a lot of good looks--many bunnies were missed but frankly it's all part of getting the "team" up to speed. Taylor looked quick and smooth. Dowell is speedy with good handles. Mjracle wasn't dressed for the game so I hope she's ok. Jevtovic looks promising and Syla was in the right position a lot, but needs to work on getting stronger. The younger Betts was very physical underneath and had her way when she wanted to get to the basket. The refs weren't really calling much either, which was fine.

In other news, I was very happy and impressed to see such a big and engaged crowd at Haas. I posted photos of some of it, but Charmin and co worked really hard to up the game day energy there and it showed. I was sitting around a lot of students at one point who seemed to be having fun. Hopefully it's a trend that will continue. The band was even on hand and I had to wear ear plugs.

Go Bears!

They never left Lulu and played our posts one on one when they got the ball which most teams will do. She did get some open looks but missed as did other players

I didn't see a new ace shooter in this game. Sheppard is a solid shooter when open but is also our best defender. She will almost certainly sit out the two remaining exhibitions (I have no idea what her injury is) and will be greatly missed vs SC who have several elite guards

I wish we had a Jayda Noble type player on this team, experienced, tough, strong defender. She would have gotten the defend Juju assignment

Yes, Mjracle was missed on defense for sure. Our offense just looked janky overall but kinda to be expected as players get famliar with it and each other. (I remember of Mjracle shut down Hildago last season....that was no small feat.)

Just finished watching the UCLA postgame press conference.

Coach Close says that she and Coach Smith have a great relationship and are both strongly committed to promoting women's college basketball.

A reporter mentioned that, after the game, she saw Ruby Perkins go over to where Gary Payton and Jason Kidd were sitting courtside to engage in conversations with both of them. I'm now even more impressed with this young woman. "Learn from the best" must be her mantra. Go Ruby!

I love this for an exhibition game. Have your weaknesses exposed, figure out what needs to improve, and make those adjustments before the season starts. That's the whole point of these games!

Also… I'm going to go out on a limb and say we probably won't have another game this season with a 40+ percentage-point differential in three-point shooting (yikes).

One problem I saw was lack of bulk. The refs were letting them play and everyone except Naya was getting pushed around. That can be adjusted in the weight room or on the recruiting trail but the time frame would be years, not weeks.

I think Jovana Jevtovic shows some promise with regard to potential for being stronger under the bucket. She's got a bigger frame and I think for her, some of it may come down to experience playing with the physicality of the game here at the D1 level. That's why games like this are valuable. The newbies get a real idea of what they're literally up against.

I really liked the few minutes I saw from Jovana. She's a freshie but already 21 years old so if I read the new NCAA eligibility rules correctly she'll be able to play 3 seasons.

some posted on the Columbia thread ...

when I was watching the game, I kept thinking Ruby Perkins reminded me of the Columbia guard who killed us with her midrange game

Didn't see this espn article until now, but it captures some of the things Charmin and Jason said at the chat:

Riley Weiss of Columbia scored 22 points against us in the Lions' 74-68 win over the Bears.

5-10 Senior guard.

Ruby could be our Riley.
