BBLA You're amazing to find all of these information from twitter before they are even released by our staff. Is it too late for coach Kelly ..and SI? Heck,...I'll change to Statefarm

Why not hire Sopak? If Sabrina comes with him better yet. Got to admit it would be great fun to turn the tables on Cal State@ Eugene and the Mutts.

I'm having trouble keeping up with all the drama and I'd appreciate a little stability. Now I'm wondering why our assistant coach would take what looks like a lateral transfer. I'm wondering if he was a key to SoCal recruiting. If so I wonder if our SoCal verbal commits are still committed. And worse yet I'm wondering if this is related to Sabrina and Sopak. I'm wondering if I need something a little more potent than hot chocolate tonight.

by the staff yet or any congrats. Perhaps they are going to make the announcement as a double switch (include the new hire).:p

SOCAL and possibly NOCAL pipelines. Things could fracture real fast here. I said earlier there will be few winners in all of this recent drama. A stiff drink is needed tonight.

He was not a Post/Center/Foward coach. We need to hire a good post coach. Maybe we was going to be let go. We did not have a good year. I dont think Colorado would pay more.
Who knows, I have a good feeling about this. He was not our main recruiter.
I dont think we need SI any more. Let's move forward. We have two solid girls with Smith and Styles. Let's move forward.

I think our posts are generally playing well, and we play good defense. I'd like to see a shooting specialist.

There are also rumors that Lindsay Gottlieb is in the mix for Vanderbilt, though I have no idea how much credence to put in that particular discussion. Practically every coach in the country has been linked to that job, which is rumored to be paying $2 million.

As for post coaches, or any other player development position, my experience over the years is that players seldom improve much during their college years except that they get stronger, more mature and understand the game better. Few players add much to their games -- witness the many attempts to teach Brittany Boyd (among others) to shoot -- though it does happen. The reason? Winning basketball games at this level is about recruiting skilled talent, and the "talent" is far more important than the "skill." Look at Jaylen Brown: His skill level is seriously questioned by NBA folks but he'll still be a top ten pick because he has talent.

You need all of your coaches to recruit, recruit, recruit and recruit some more. Skill development once they arrive on campus is nice, but athleticism erases skill so having a coach who can teach every post move in the book is much less important than having a coach who can get a 6-4 athlete who can only drop step to choose Cal.

Agreed. I'll add that one part of recruiting is evaluating talent -- some coaches just have a knack for finding under-the-radar gems. Also IMHO the head coach should be the closer, I don't get it when an assistant does all of the work then departs with a bunch of recruits.
ClayK

Talent evaluation is indeed crucial ... on several levels. Mercedes Jefflo was clearly a P5 talent, but her attitude raised red flags among some coaches. Now, I can't say whether it was worth it to Cal to have her and then lose her, but that's part of the equation.

The most difficult aspect, though, is this: Knowing when a player will no longer improve. I don't think there's any way to tell ...

Buff's one of the worst programs in the conference. Seems like this was a situation where he knew he was going to be let go, and
he grabbed at the opportunity. If this results in Cal hireing KS and we get SI as a result then its pluss all around. If this causes
a couple of decommitts then I'll need more then 2 dollops of rum in my next cup of hot Chocolate.

Unless he knows something we don't and LG is going to jump at something else. Yikes! Make that a triple dose in the hot chocolate.

CU hired a new WBB coach in March, JR Payne. She spent the last two seasons at Santa Clara. She's a St. Mary's College grad and former assistant there.

Vandy is hiring Ivey from Notre Dame, apparently.

No one has stayed in the #3 position longer than 2 years. Daron lasted one year, Katy lasted two years and now Jeff lasted two years. It could just be a product of being the bottom assistant. Although Park and Steding left to be head coaches (neither with particular success). Interesting note, both went 3-27 this year! I would think of anyone Charmin would be the most likely to get a head job. Maybe she's waiting on Stanford or maybe she's completely happy as the associate. At this point I don't think we can read anything into Jeff leaving for Colorado until we see how the entire offseason shakes out. If Gottlieb is gone, maybe he was thinking ahead. It's impossible to know what his relationship was with her so we can't really speculate on if he was close to being let go.

Who would everyone like to see fill in that third spot? Devanei Hampton? A proven recruiter with a history of big gets for the school's they've worked for or a recruiter who might not have the years in but comes with a big rolodex and ties to the AAU community? Talia Caldwell? Male? Female?

Assuming a former player would be a good assistant is like assuming a good salesman will be a good sales manager. The skill sets are entirely different.

Ohhh gawd.....We are getting jittery around here. I am 100% Husky....woof...woof! Lol, The hand wringing is almost too much at times . Just dripping sarcasm with Clays post above to mention it first. So you can climb up him. He certainly hit the Ionescu situation right on in December. :acclaim: Chill pill time.

I'm always interested when you talk about this subject. It seems that most people take a lot of factors and get a feel on how much a player can improve. I think the only person that improved more than I expected is Kameron Rooks. Based on pedigree, one should expect dramatic improvement and losing 30-40 pounds certain helps. I expected Moute to improve more based on his pedigree and you see glimpses but it hasn't kicked in yet.

You're obviously not a Husky fan because the idea that Oregon's likely losing a sure thing to UW now that Sopak may join their staff really sticks in your craw.

Fans from other programs are welcome to post here but crossing the line and posting woe is me posts about Cal potentially losing pipelines to SoCal when an assistant coach makes a move and maybe Jeff knows something we don't and is jumping ship, etc while posing as a Cal fan is not.

And last last 5 posts started have an SI reference by the third post in so you see this is what we will hear for the next four years. If only SI this, if only SI that, if only. Yes losing a recruit from the backyard hurts and you are having a hard time too, I am guessing here. Everything I mentioned earlier came from others and yes I parroted it to get them to think about it. As with the example above.

Neither posters are fans of other programs that are taking other people's posts and amplifying them for the potential benefit of the program they root for.

It's not appropriate.

You don't see that from others that post here that are fans of other programs. Take a note from them.

Some players, like Gennifer Brandon, didn't seem to improve much. I'm not knocking her, she was one of my all-time favorites, but she was nearly as good as a freshie as she was as a senior. Pure athleticism and intensity. Richard Solomon was similar but did improve some.

Some bigs take a while to develop if they're new to the sport or still growing. Kam Rooks is a good example, another might be OSU's Ruth Hamblin.

Others, like Jabari Bird and Allen Crabbe, may need time to develop intensity. Gabby Green may fit in this category.

Then skills can improve, like Jason Kidd's shooting.

This board has a long history of hosting a lot of paranoid, butt-hurt, and somewhat psychotic UW fans. The worst was
the pinhead who ran the huskie (Scout?) board. He would actually downgrade the star rating of any player Cal recruited in
FB. I see it continues to this day. Cal Women's hoops is miles ahead of your program Golden. Even if you get SI, we'll still
finish ahead of you in the standings. I'll bet you on that.

Honestly, while it appears Ionescu prefers to go to college up North at UW or UO, I bet Sopek would probably prefer an Assistant coaching job at Cal (although I'm not sure which program would be in the position to offer more $), and not having to uproot his family, or make such a big transition. But I don't see LG pulling as many strings as necessary to orchestrate all that. It's not her style and a bit against her principles.
