Washington will be in decent shape if they land Miller's top 50 teammate- Jordyn Jenkins- next year. Hope we can lure her down to Berkeley!

Utah has a pipeline established for Canadian "bigs"! A couple years ago, both of the Ute centers were Canadian.

Only Cal doesn't have a pipeline to Canada, Australia, Spain, Germany, France, eastern Europe, Texas or California. If Gottlieb doesn't begin to recruit more competively overall with the rest of the conference, the Bears will quickly descend to the bottom of the Pac 12 next year. Her HC career will be in jeopardy.

Why not send this list to Coach Gottlieb so she'll know what's on the line for her job security. lol.

I really think Chen's lack of development must be one issue that has raised questions with some post recruits. She is slow and not a natural. But she also looks just as lost as she did as a freshman. Teach her to keep her hands up at all times, and she could at least defend a bit and get some rebounds just standing there.

I have been very surprised that at this stage she is still so unaggressive. She stands still and watches, often with her back to the ball for no reason. She seems like an incredible person, but has not showed any tenacity or instinct. I am rooting for her to take just any small step forward in terms of fight to be a contributor. We could really use her next year.

I wonder if there are any players in the pipeline from Pena's home country. That visit to NZ-last year- allowed some good opportunities to watch the upcoming stars from that region.

I never saw any reason to believe Chen could contribute at a Pac-12 level. It was a nice roll of the dice, and maybe opened the door for some future Chinese recruits but she, like Sara A., was a long-shot at best.

The foreign recruits are notoriously difficult to evaluate, especially the tall ones, because unless they face elite competition they can dominate by size alone. Angel Jackson is a good example, as she had trouble scoring against other tall players as a sophomore, but continued exposure to talented posts helped her develop her game. That's probably not happening in Iceland ...

All that said, it doesn't appear to be a great recruiting year for Cal, but a strong showing this year could make a big difference down the road. And if Anigwe gets picked in the first round, as she likely will, that's a good recruiting tool as well.

The Canadians, Australians and Europeans play on national teams in major international competition, so you have a better idea of what you are going to get.. As Schroeder mentions, though, we actually need a recruiting pipeline in California.

I know it has been mentioned before, but I wonder if the lack of development is tied into the friendly atmosphere in which Gottlieb runs her program,. Most players need to be pushed to improve and if you act like their best friend that is not going to happen.

According to that rating service, we have the 67th best recruiting class in the nation. At least we are not #68.

Women's Basketball Blog has a list of last year's graduate transfers. A surprisingly large number of 68 in total. But mostly from one small school to another. Very few impact players, and very few big people. This option will be a shot in the dark. We were very lucky to get a good player like Recee this year.

One thing we never seem to be good at is having a Plan B. We seem to focus on a few elite players, and if they go elsewhere, we start looking around overseas. But by then, most of those good players have also made commitments. We were fortunate to get Penina that way, with an assist from Stanford. But we also ended up with Hind Ben Abdelkader.

And Chen Yue.

Before those I remember Rama N'Diaye (Senegal), who was on her way to becoming a star before she suffered a terrible knee injury. Farther back I remember Milica Vukadinovic (Yugoslavia), Jackie Lear (Australia), and Sophie von Saldern (Germany).

Several years back WayneBear posted a series Where Are They Now on former Cal WBB players. Well worth reading.

The safest bets seem to be tall Canadians and Australians. Our coaches need to learn to speak Australian.
