Writes Leeza Cruz at Cal Athletics:

"Sunday's (10/27) exhibition match vs Beijing Normal University will NOT be played in Haas Pavilion. We are looking into relocating this game. To stay up to date with the status of this game, and for the most up to date information please monitor CalBears.com and the Cal Women's Basketball social media channels (@CalWBBall) for updates."

And NOW (as in 60 seconds ago), Twitter says the game's at dot dot dot Maples!

Great that they found a way to play the game. I'm not sure how many will attend at Maples, but it would have been very inhospitable to cancel the game when the Chinese team traveled so far. And I'm sure the Bears could use the practice game as well.

So the Normal game will not be in its normal venue?

Tomorrow should be a big game for senior Chen Yue from Beijing, China. GO BEARS!

We had to play a volleyball game at Stanford a week or so again because of the blackout.

I dont think it's worth the effort/cost to go to Palo alto for an exhibition game. Perhaps they can go to a local high school though anything now would be short notice!

Stanford plays this Beijing team on Tuesday, so I'm sure they took that into account when thinking about a venue.

I think we got steals in both McIntosh and Lutje Schipolt.

It's just one half of an exhibition game, but the Bears will need Evelien on the floor this year. Frosh is impressive with aggression, finishing, and (surprise to me) ability to drive the baseline. She has 14 points and eight rebounds in 10 minutes, against a very physical Beijing Normal U defense.

Great start to 2nd half: Brown steal, McIntosh found Styles open for layup!

I followed the game online and it seemed like most of the shots were layups, three point shots or free throws. These stats for Cal bare out my thoughts with half of the Bear shot attempts being layups or put backs (offensive rebounds). Cal made only 22 of 40 of these "layups". If one substracts out Sara Anastasieska's pathetic 1 for 11 from the field, the Bears would have shot 49.2 % as a team. Sara also led the team in turnovers.

https://calbears.com/documents/2019/10/27//Beijing_noraml.pdf

The newcomers by-in-large out played the returnees for Cal. Leilani McIntosh was the surprise of the backcourt as she acted as the playmaker for the team. She also registered five steals! The star of the frontcourt was our Netherland's import, Evelien Lutje Schipholt, who was by far the most aggressive Bear in her 20 minutes played. She led the team in rebounding, offensive rebounds and personal fouls.

Free throw shooting % appeared to be improved but turnovers (20) & three point shooting were below average per usual.

The Bears defense against three point shooting was abysmal, allowing 50% by Beijing National University. Cal could not stop #6 for the Chinese team. Cal did force 28 turnovers against their opposition, however.

Stanford will play this team on Tuesday night so I'll forgo any judgement on this exhibition.

Very much look forward to everyone's impressions who were able to witness the action in person. I noticed that Mi'cole Cayton DNP. Did she participate in warm-ups? She has missed most of the last two seasons so it was disappointing that she was not ready to play today...

This is her first real season back in YEARS due to injury... can we please refrain from describing any of her play from today's EXHIBITION game as "pathetic"? I just feel like we can do better as a fan base. Thank you.

I agree...stop with the "pathetic" posts. Geeze...give some credit for tenacity. This was an exhibition. Be glad she's healthy enough to be back on the court after two years of inaction. Back injuries are awful. I'm rooting for her and the entire team!

Just from reading the stats I'd say the best news is getting 27 offensive rebounds and the worst is letting one Bejing player make 7 of 8 threes. More good news is the sorely needed contributions from our freshies. Otherwise I'm pleased to see that Sara was able to play and saddened that Mi'Cole wasn't.

S71

where did you find those stats?
better than the typical box score
HoopDreams
How long do you want to ignore this user?
some good signs:

Schipholt can provide some offense
Leilani is a baller in a position of need (especially with Cayton still out)
The team can rebound

of course this was an exhibition game vs a team of unknown quality, but it's better then watching youtube highlights to get a feel for our new players (which is effectively is everyone except Brown)

HoopDreams: the stats were from the Live Stats available for the game. I had those up until late afternoon when I replaced 'em with the official boxscore. Below is a photo of Schipholt driving the baseline...

The player who scored 27 points and was 7 for 8 in 3 point shooting should be looked at as a possibility. But, she had zero rebounds in 32 minutes of play. How tall and how quick is she?

Go Bears!

While the choice of words S71 used to describe Sara's shooting could have been a bit different, it seems certain posters on this board seem to see S71 as some sort of "whipping boy." "Pathetic" seems to be as good a word as any to describe a 1 for 11 shooting result. This treatment of S71 has been going on for years, and Steve had done nothing but write thousands and thousands of informative posts, mostly on sports that receive little or no coverage. In contrast, I've never seen a negative post directed at Moraga Bear, whos reportage of only the $ sports is average at best.

S71 is going to be under the magnifying lens due the insensitive nature of their posts. It seems every season S71 posts something downright offensive about our players or their performances. S71 has every right to express their opinion, just like everyone else on here has a right to call S71 out when they are offended. 1-11 isn't pathetic, a shooter must keep shooting. It takes courage and strength to keep trying despite poor results. Those are qualities I want to see in our Bears.

Enjoyed the game at Stanford and the power being on! The person sitting next to me and myself enjoyed watching Ms. McIntosh. She has spunk, and envigorates the pace of the offese. I usually pick a freshman player and follow them until they graduate. Evellen stood out for sure. She is fun to watch. I have been a C.J. West fan since her freshman year. Charmin played everyone. Glad I drove to Palo Alto on a beautiful day. GO BEARS!

My intention is never to make someone a whipping post. My intention is only to remind folks on here that parents and loved ones of the young women on our team read these posts. Potential recruits could be on here as well, we define the culture surrounding cal wbb. Is it too much to ask for discretion, empathy or tact from our hopefully highly educated and open minded fans?

Certain posters here have routinely expressed things which are , IMHO, inappropriate due to being personal and/or creepy (comments on player appearance ).

These are college Student Athletes, have some respect and decency. Agree that families and potential recruits read these posts. Not saying don't be critical, but do so in a way that isn't nasty!

And to those who hide behind a screen and rarely if ever attend a game . You've got little right to be such NegaBears as a few of you are.

Go Bears !

Sara hasn't played of close to 2 years due to injury. Everyone has an off day. No need to be such a NegaBear and call her out like that (Posting her stats is one thing, but you took it too far).

She hit (2) 3's against UConn and we heard encouraging practice reports about her when she first transferred 2+ years ago so there is hope that she can really contribute when she is healthy. Not surprised that she is rusty. Actually the fact that Charmin had her shoot a lot is probably a good sign. She wouldn't waste those shots on someone that she does not expect to contribute.

Exactly. And an exhibition game is the perfect place to let her shake off the cobwebs!

I jumped on the poster who called Chase Garbers Chase Garbage. Don't recall S71 ever being that extreme in his critique of any women's hoop player here. And yeah I know about not attending any games. When I lived in SJ I went to a dozen games a year at Cal.
