The Bears should be able to squeak out a victory today over the RoadRunners. CSB returns 7 of their top 8 scorers from a 16-13 team last year. They finished 8-8 in the Big West Conference and are projected to place 8th place this season out of 11 teams. The Runners averaged 62+ ppg and only have one decent three point shooter.

This is a definition of a mediocore opponent so if Cal doesn't prevail this afternoon, I don't know when they will in Pac 12 Conference play.

Once again this team possesses experience as compared to the Bears. Six of the seven veterans are upper-classmen. RS junior 6-1 PF Jayden Eggleston seems to be CSB's best overall player, averaging 11.8 ppg plus 5.8 rpg. Their 6-3 senior center, Vanessa Austin, is their other primetime talent with a combination of 8.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg.

Their 5-11 point guard and only solid three-point shooter is graduate student, Andie Easley. She registered 39 treys, 75 assists plus averaged 7.9 ppg in 2019-20. Junior SF (5-9) Miracle Saxon scored 7.7 ppg and led the team in rebounding with 7 boards per contest.

The SG spot should be split between 5-7 junior Jasmin Dixon and 5-5 soph Lexus Green, tallying 3.7 and 4.2 ppg, respectively. The RoadRunners also have a back-up post in 6-2 junior Makenzie Bond who averaged 3.4 ppg last season.

Overall, CSB is an average at best offensive team. Their ballhandling is mixed with 13.5 assists vs 15 turnovers per game. They do substitute often and force 9.9 steals per outing.

Cal should be able hang with this team and dominate the rebounding. Hopefully, the Bears will have another guard available today to cutdown on their pathetic TO performance vs SJS.

So the live stream starts with scoreboard invoking people to get loud and make noise? Are the cutouts equipped with speakers?

End 1st: Bakersfield 18 Cal 15. Elsnitz gets some playing time and leads Bears with 7 points (2-2,3-4 FT, 2 rebounds).
Despite being down, it feels likes the Bears are playing better than the first game. I did see Elsnitz try to force a pass inside, whereas the Bear tradition is to lob it high to the inside. The pass didn't get to its intended recipient (Samb, I think)

CSUB is shooting a lot better than we are. I don't think they can keep that up. Otherwise good to see Alma play and Michelle is looking very athletic.

Bears are pressing CSUB a bit - with Heide hanging back to protect the rim.

Cal's turnovers are sins of aggression - errant passes. CSUB's turnovers seem to be more a result of Cal's defense (travelling, a steal).

Horrible charging call on Alma. Otherwise the refs aren't hurting us - we've gotten a lot of free throws.

Our defense looks a little confused and a step slow. Also we're taller but giving up a lot of rebounds due to poor positioning. Oh well, freshies are freshies.

A poor last minute of the half - giving up long three, turnover, not tight defense and Bakersfield leads at half 36-29. Bears are in this at the free throw line - 10-14 while Bakersfield never went to the line. Bears shooting only 9-22 (1-3) while Bakersfield is 17-32 (2-6). yes Bakersfield has ten more shots than the Bears!
9 turnovers at the half for the Bears - so, en route to another 20+ game? Livestats says Bakersfield has 15 points off the Bear turnovers - although I'm not sure how that's calculated.

Freshmen big people learning as to be expected. Guards just don't look athletic enough or good enough shooters for the PAC12. Need both Green and Crocker back to beat other PAC12 teams.

Outside shooting is basically non-existent (although McIntosh did make a three)

We started 3 guards in the second half, which I like, but I don't think Evelien has the length or hops to be effective at center. Maybe Michelle or Sela would have been better there. I do like Dalayah at stretch four.

Still nobody boxing out.

CSUB can't miss. We're getting blown out.

Our best defense seems to be a zone with Sela in there. May have to go with a lot more of that this year. A man defense just moves us around until they score.

Why not? We're not keeping anyone off the boards anyway.

I sure like Alma. Great motor and she can play inside and outside.

I just watched the team for the first time (third quarter). I thought the athleticism would jump out with so many highly rated recruits. But I didn't see it on display.

Watching this takes a lot of contextualizing and detachment. Fight to the end, ladies!

Freshies are freshies. Six of them. Give us half a season. And we just caught on fire and closed it to 6 points.

Sela looks much more mature than I had expected. Better than Chen already. Should have a very nice career.

Looks like a young team learning how to play together. Offensively, lots of dribble drive one on one stuff. The outside shooting is mediocre at best right now. I don't quite understand the zone. Lots of gaps and giving up wide open shots. Agree with the need to improve boxing out.

They are making a run right now with defense. I think having a guard or two who can shoot from the outside will make a big difference. Would like to see Onyiah and Heide stick that 15 foot jumper at the free throw line they are giving them. That would be huge for the offense. Would also like to see more off the ball screens.

Love that defensive pressure. They are disrupting the Roadrunners.

Yeah, it looked like Alma to me.

We had "only" 15 turnovers but we shot just 30%, including 2 of 14 threes. Also a grand total of 5 assists. That kind of offense won't get it done.

Zero FG's for Cal in the last 6:27 of the game, ooouch!!
