Per Swimswam:

Ranking the 2024 Men's Recruiting Classes: #8-5

#7 California Golden Bears

Speaking of international recruits, Cal is bringing in a strong group of its own, highlighted by Mewen Tomac, a French national record holder fresh off a home Olympic Games. Tomac is still getting his NCAA compliance sorted out, sources tell SwimSwam, so there's some hedging on his arrival but if that all gets straight, he adds a strong bat to an already deep Golden Bear backstroke contingent. Japan's Yamato Okadome, a 2022 Junior Pan Pacs silver medalist, and Estonia's Lars Antoniak join the Cal roster, as does France's sprint freestyler/butterflier Nans Mazellier, who arrives in Berkeley after a gap year.

Cal's recruiting class is headlined by #3 Lucca Battaglini, the fastest 50 freestyler in the class (19.04), who projects as a 50 free/100 fly/100 freestyler in the NCAA format. Battaglini's 19.04 propelled him up the class's rankings as it all but guarantees Cal another 18-point relay swimmer, even if he does not crack the 'A' relay right away. "Best of the Rest" recruits Thackston McMullen (20.20/43.67) and August Vetsch (19.71/43.21) also add fuel to Cal's formidable sprint group, as does Matthew Elliott (19.89/44.39).

This is a well-rounded class for the Golden Bears, as they add at least one swimmer to every discipline. BOTR Carter Lancaster (1:45.02/3:46.65) joins the IM crew, Freddy Klein (4:19.68/15:02.12) and Trey Hesser (4:19.37/15:15.56) join the distance freestylers, HM Nick Mahabir (55.13/2:01.09), Antoniak, and Okadome add their firepower to the breaststroke group, and Frank Applebaum (47.13/1:43.39) won the DIII title in the 200 fly twice.

A new era starts for Cal this season as they join the ACC. They're also seeking to reclaim the national title after ASU beat them in 2024. This class may help them in that mission and will certainly help them make themselves known as a threat in the ACC, but more importantly, it's an evenly spread group that should develop well in Berkeley and keep Cal at the top of the national rankings beyond this 2024-25 season.

Thanks for the update on the 2024 class. Also besides Lasco returning as a 5th year, it has been posted here that the others returning, Rose, Jensen, Kopp, and Seeliger will be back on campus for their grad years. Should be a very strong team.

Any idea if Mewen Tomac is still trying to get his NCAA compliance sorted out. With Texas getting the additional transfer Chris Guiliamo which looks to put them in the driver seat for the 'ship. Mewen would be a welcome addition.

Looks like our last big meet before the fall will be the Minnesota Invitational. Any idea who are some of the teams that will be participating?

Unsure if any insiders have additional info, but last I heard a while back, coaches were still working on Tomac's eligibility. Correct me if I'm wrong but there seems to be a bit of a gray area as he participated in the ISL, but I don't believe any participating athletes were paid.

Minnesota Invite is the last midseason meet and is 12/4-12/7, with Cal, Minnesota and Harvard as the headliners. Many top programs are swimming their midseason meets this weekend around the country.

Any news of Mewen Tomac status . Not appearing on 2024-25 men's roster but perhaps haven't been updated for any spring additions.

With a meet vs USC on Jan 17th ..roster should be posted soon, especially since the women's roster is up!

No Tomar (yet) but Cal has added in the midseason Estonian's Lars Antoniak a breast stroker 2 time Br champion in the Estonia's short course championships (100 & 200). Coming in as a freshmen.

Antoniak is a known commit, but it took a bit longer to get school registration in order. I highly doubt he will be a factor at NCAAs this year.

The swimming community is waiting for a couple of higher profile swimmers to be added to the roster.

Dave Durden prefers a low-key approach to additions to the swim roster, so I do not anticipate an updated roster to be posted before Friday's duel meet versus USC. I do expect several swimmers who are not currently on the roster to compete for the Bears. This will include a couple of swimmers who project to be NCAA scorers.

For the fall season, most attention in men's collegiate swimming has focused on the Texas program rebuild under Bowman aided by mega-NIL bucks, with top swimmers transferring from Arizona State (Kos), Cal (Shackell, who more recently has returned to his club team), Stanford (Maurer) and Notre Dame (Guiliano).

Indiana has also attracted a number of top transfers (Benzing, Corbeau, King, McDonald and Sarkany). Add in their nation's best college diving group, and Indiana was seen to be a co-favorite with Texas for NCAAs.

Florida, coming out of last year's 3rd place finish, looked like they could be in the mix for a higher finish, but recently two of their top swimmers, Chaney and McDuff have entered the portal.

Attention will turn again on Cal, after Friday's meet. Fans of the above mentioned competitors will be pissed.
Hopefully.
Go Aqua Bears.

I look forward to the announcements. Even comments on Antoniak joining Cal there were lots of negative comments on Durden & Marsh recruiting even though Texas and Indiana have done the same. Really hope we stick it to them.

Looks like Tomac and Lucas Henveaux is now on the roster for the spring semester. Lucas, brother of recent addition Camille was on the team 2 years ago 2022-23. Both are scheduled to swim today. The NCAA championship will be very interesting.

Swan,

With the signing of Tomar & Lucas, any others possible announcements for this year?

OBear,
I believe the staff is hoping to add one more impact swimmer to the team. We might see him next Friday when we host Stanford, or possibly at ACCs if we overcome NCAA/ACC hurdles.
I realize some fans are *****ing about the ability of top programs like Cal, Texas, Indiana and NC State to add swimmers mid-year, and tap the international pool of talent, but that is simply where we stand in college swimming. If one looks at what is happening in college athletics post the House decision, we are approaching a world where the NCAA cannot dictate who is able to compete, and earn compensation, in any college sport. All you need is the means to sue the NCAA for monopoly behavior or restraint of trade. Our own Sebastabear aka Kevin Kennedy, the COO of Cal's NIL Collective has made this point clear.
I do know that Dave Durden isn't worried about the moaning from the peanut gallery. He understands quite well what is happening in college recruiting. Blood sport.
