Update, Nans will be part of the 2024 class.

Recent interview with Kaii Winkler seems to indicate that he'll pick either ASU, NC State, or Texas. He has also visited Florida. He hasn't visited Cal (yet), but is open to the idea. His brother has verbaled to Texas for this fall.solobear said:
Any news on Kaii Winkler and Daniel Diehl?
If they both come to Cal, winning NC championship is very much secured for the coming years.

Winkler joining Diehl in NC State's 2024 class. The Wolfpack have been recruiting at a very high level for the past 5/6 years and look to be serious contenders for an NCAA championship as soon as Diehl and Winkler are added to their roster.swimmer19 said:Recent interview with Kaii Winkler seems to indicate that he'll pick either ASU, NC State, or Texas. Wow. This is potentially a major addition to the team. I use the term "potentially" because Pieter is taking a gap year to stay and train in South Africa until fall 2024, and stuff can happen in two years. But if he stays the Cal course, Coetze projects to be a major point earner at NCAAs with his backstroke range and free sprint speed. His times as converted by SwimSwam place him near or at the top in the 100/200 back, and 50 free for the classes of 2023 and 2024. His converted time in the 100 free, is a nice card to hold as well for relay flexibility.
Looks like Pieter has decided to remain in South Africa and will go Pro...

He was a 2023 recruit but took a gap year. Ranked in 2023 by swimcloud #53.Polodad said:
Trey Hesser, distance freestyler reported committed to Bears by SwImSwam.
A much needed recruit to compensate for Pieter Coetzee's decommitment. Mucho moaning from SwimSwam readers re a 23 year enrolling with possibly two years of eligibility.OBear073akaSMFan said:
Looks like Cal has recruited another french person for the 2024 season. The french national record-holder in the 200 back Mewen Tomac. Based on his sc times from he would had been A finalist in the 100/200 back at the 2023 NCAA championships. He has 2 years eligibility left. He is currently rated #6 on swimcloud. He was actually born on Sept 11, 2001!

It's my understanding as well that the 2020-2021 class is the last class to have an optional 5th year of competitin and as noted, we have a number of seniors who can elect to compete next year. Durden has a good track record of retaining swimmers so I expect a majority of the current year seniors to come back next year to see if they can dethrone ASU. The key loss will be Liam Bell.BRBear said:
My understanding was that anyone who competed in 2020-2021 gets an extra year, so next year would actually be the last one for Lasco, Seeliger, Rose, Jensen, Kopp, and Hawk, as well as Brooks Curry if he opts back in to NCAA swimming.
If every scorer who can return does, we only lose 39 points going into next year. If Marchand quits like he's said he will and Schlicht isn't able to con his way to a 7th year of eligibility, ASU should be losing 145.5, meaning the Bears would be favored on returning points with a (seemingly) much stronger incoming class. It's unlikely that they all return, and it's also unlikely that all the recruits show up in the fall, so it looks like next year should be a close one.

I think since their primary sprint coach Herbie Behm is taking over as head coach that group is least likely to leave; of course at this point their list of true sprinters is down to just Kulow.
If all of Kos, Sarkany, Kharun, and McDonald go to Texas and join up with Hobson, Modglin, and Germonprez that probably makes them the favorites, albeit with a couple fairly weak relays for a championship team.
Maybe just wishful thinking from the peanut gallery too. He was in the portal last year.swan said:
I don't believe Minakov seriously considered Cal last year and no reason to think he has reconsidered.

Yikes redshirt Aaron Shackell has entered the transfer portal. Aaron sat put 2023 but was thought to returning in 2024. Still could come back but there is speculating might go to Texas as his training partner in Indiana was Drew killer who will be training in Texas. Aaron's sister in 2025 is a top verbal to Cal. Hope this doesn't cause her to change her mind too !!

Shackell actually swam with the team through the winter invitational, but later in December or early January it was announced that he was returning home to focus on the Olympics. He was reported as training with Bowman in Texas recently, so this announcement, though disappointing, is not unexpected.OBear073akaSMFan said:OBear073akaSMFan said:

It's been confirmed on swimswam that Aaron Shackell is transferring to Texas. Wonder what was the reason cause he never swam for Cal choosing instead to sit out his frosh year. Hope this doesn't *gulp*impact his younger sister (rated #1) & brother who are 2025 verbals.
