This may just be anecdotal, but I think the Bears need to avoid UCLA getting into a lot of 6 on 5 situations. From what Ive seen, the Bruins are deadly when on a 6 on 5 and convert quite easily.

On defense, we gotta hold down redshirt senior Jack Larsen and freshman Wade Sherlock.

UCLA moves even more than U$C...Cal will need to avoid the exclusions called away from the ball that plagued them yesterday (& kept the Trojans in the game). UCLA will try to swim Papa 2 to 2 so switching on D to keep him fresh will be key...I can't tell if he's swimming his way back into shape, but Trojans kept him relatively in check yesterday.

I was surprised to see UCLA give up 13 goals to Princeton...if Cal scores 13, they will get the three peat.

It got scary late. Cal led 12-6 in the middle of the 3rd period but was outscored 5-1 down the stretch by UCLA. Congratulations on third consecutive national championship!!! GO BEARS!

Cal Men own the waters, BACK-TO-BACK Champions:
  • NCAA Men's WATER POLO champions 2021, 2022, 2023
  • NCAA Men's Div. I Men's SWIMMING & Diving champions 2022, 2023
  • Intercollegiate ROWING Association champions 2022, 2023

FIRST TIME EVER (by any school) back-to-back championships in the same years in ALL 3 aquatic sports. Even with men's Swimming and Water Polo alone, there haven't been back-to-back champions in the same years in almost 30 years.

Yeah, we had THREE 6 on 5 situations where the Alpha Dogs didnt even bother to set up the offense, and firedca shot immediately. We wound up losing out on running a full minute of clock.

And we still PREVAILED!

The interview with Kirk was telling! It's been an incredible run with this crew. Hats off to Kirk and Jeff and the boys. Definitely one for the ages.

9 graduating or have used up their eligibility of which there are three more significant contributors (Dunn, Loth & Stone). None close to Weinberg and Papa, but more to replace than in any one year during this run that Papa and Weinberg have anchored.

Kieckhafer looked good when he returned and Jordi and Avakian made significant strides this season especially with Papa out for nearly half of the regular season, but both need to get more consistent. Kirk has been terrific at developing (& getting playing time for) the younger players so expect some of the underclassmen to contribute significantly. Assuming Valera and Casabella return, they should be strong, but UCLA will be the favorite with the return/arrival of the Dodd brothers.

Okay, but we seem to do well with international players: the Greeks (Papa) and the Spaniards (Valera and Casabella) seem to like playing for Cal. How are we doing with international recruits? Honest question, as I really don't know.

Also, last year's final at Spieker was so much more exciting. The fans are so close to the pool. A Stanford player once remarked that Spieker is a difficult place to play as he felt that the fans were floating right above him. Whereas this year's final at USC seems tame in comparison.
