CATHEDRAL CITY – The No. 21 California softball team extended its win streak to 13 games and swept the weekend for the second straight week with an 8-0 (6) win over Long Beach State and a 3-2 comeback victory vs. Cal Poly on Sunday at the Mary Nutter Classic.

Tatum Anzaldo went 3-for-7 with two RBI to lead the Golden Bears (15-1).

Game 1: Cal 8, Long Beach State 0 (6)
Randi Roelling continued her strong weekend in the circle, allowing just a single through three innings after Cal scored a pair of runs in the first on bases loaded walks from Tianna Bell and Ryann Orange.

The Bears got their bats going in the third, scoring three runs on a couple of RBI hits. Orange drove one back up the middle to score pinch-runner Hope Alley and Mika Lee brought around two on a base hit through the right side to make it 5-0.

Cal added another run in the sixth on a Tatum Anzaldo RBI single before Kaylee Pond walked it off with a 2-run shot, her second of the season. Roelling earned her sixth win of the year, allowing just three singles with seven strikeouts. The freshman from Modesto earned three wins and two saves over the weekend, allowing just three runs (one earned) in 16.1 innings pitched.

Game 2: Cal 3, Cal Poly 2
The Mustangs took an early lead in the first, scoring a run on two singles and a passed ball as it was 1-0 heading to the fifth. Cal Poly extended its lead to 2-0 when three straight hits led to another run, forcing Cal to go to Anna Reimers out of the pen in place of Haylei Archer. Reimers worked out of the jam, getting a pair of outs to end the frame.

Cal executed small ball to perfection in the home half of the inning, taking the lead for the first time of the afternoon. Anzaldo recorded an RBI double to score Lee, who reached on a throwing error from the pitcher.

With Anzaldo on third after a Pond sacrifice bunt, Acacia Anders laid down the first of two consecutive RBI squeeze bunts with the second coming from Elon Butler to make it 3-2, Bears. After a flyout in the top of the seventh, the Bears went to Roelling and she got the final two outs for her third save of the season.

Cal opens its home slate with a 2 p.m. midweek game against UC Davis on Wednesday at Levine-Fricke Field.

Cal hit #15 in one poll yesterday. Anxiously awaiting the USA and ESPN polls later today. Go Bears!

College Sports Madness. They moved up to #20 (1 spot) in the USA Today poll. ESPN also lists Cal at #24…so we are now in the two reputable top 25's. Go Bears!

I was really excited for this team until Louisiana. With the kneeling they have lost me. It was a really stupid thing to do because until that point they were at least respected. Now they are hated by a segment of fans and if they make the post-season they will have even more people angry at them. I'm angry with them too, but wish each of them well. I wish they had not done that.

On the other hand, there are many more who respect and love this team, are huge fans and love free speech. Why would I ever be mad at someone for exercising their constitutional right? That would make me a hypocrite and grossly un-American.

See you all at the home opener. 15-1 and a top 25 ranking. Way to go, Bears!!

Great start! Hope they can keep it going as the quality of competition picks up. Georgia will be a legit test.

Are you implying I don't love free speech? I'm not made at their exercising their constitutional right. I'm made at what it represents. They have the right to do what they did. And I, using the same right they exercised, have the right to disagree, which I do.

I was a huge fan. I do love the team. But I do not respect them any longer. So they have lost me for this year. They'll be fine without me.

But they will be a very un-liked team in the post season, and it didn't have to be that way. They asked for it.

As I said, I wish each of them well. But this year, I'll leave the team behind.

73, cal softball needs all the fans it can get to support the team, gleefully cheering for a potential fan to walk away from the program is very nearsighted...also alienating umpires (which happened in louisiana) from conservative states is never a smart strategy, does this team wanna prioritize political statements or wining softball games/championships?

tom, college kids don't understand yet that ceremonial gestures (which are also disrespectful to the men & women of the armed services who are disproportionately of color & minorities who risk their lives protecting our nation & democracy) don't change ****, earning a degree from the #1 ranked public university in the world & then building wealth & influence is how things get changed in the real world...maybe u could give the bears a 2nd chance at strawberry canyon?...this team is pretty special & these players and coaches mean well

I think he is exercising his free speech.

Growing up in West Virginia, I knew lots of those toothless hillbillies. Many were good people and many left the state and ended up in other states. I don't have any feelings about the bowing, but if one of their teams was out here and we had a person sing the Black National Anthum, and their team took a knee, what do you think the results would be.

One of my classmates is African American and lives in Berkeley. We had a warm relationship and he goes back to every reunion. His daughter graduated from Harvard, and works for a big firm out here. But he would be just as insulted by the H word as he would be insulted by the N word. I wouldn't use either.

Sorry left out "I wish you well"..bye bye. You probably have to boycott the basketball, football games many people chose to not stand for the national anthem. I do stand but don't look down on these people who choose to support the teams.

Are you talking about fans or players. The women's team all stand during the anthem. some fans don't but a lot are older and don't stand to cheer either. Me, I stand either way. But my old creaking bones make it hard.

73, i personally do not look down on those people who don't stand for the national anthem (thinks its disrespectful to those who fight to protect us around the world but also think the freedom of speech allows dumb azz gestures) but you had better believe that a very high percentage of softball umpires (who seem to be disproportionally white males between 30-50 years of age) particularly in conservative states are gonna be very biased against those that kneel...and it almost cost the bears a game in louisiana in a rainstorm imo

again, what are the goals of the cal's softball program?...is it winning championships?

this is a teaching moment for coach spencer & the staff...personally hope she encourages her players to earn their degrees from the #1 ranked public university in the world & build significant platforms for social change in the real world (not ceremonial gestures that don't mean ****) that just alienate the umpires

the bears could also be alienating those who vote in the polls & the ncca selection committee members

My question to 73 is will the team kneel at every pac12 game including our own games. Because if you did this just to piss of Louisiana fans , i would be against that.

Reply to Shocky1:

As I said, I wish them well, but I won't support a team that kneels at the national anthem.

If I hear that they've apologized and will discontinue kneeling, of course I'd give them a second chance. I WANT to give them a second chance. And the points made about their youth are valid and not overlooked by me at all.

This looks like a really good opportunity for them this season. But believe me when I tell you they're going to face some nasty fan opposition if and when (and I believe they will) they get into playoff games because of what they did. I made plenty of mistakes as a college student, so I get the situation. I'll keep an open mind in hopes they can regain my respect.

As I said, I think they're a really good team and have some great opportunities this season.

73, if it was to get the fans upset then they succeeded. So if that was what the team wanted why should we be upset by their fans reactions?

I don't think their purpose was to get the fans to react. I thought they have kneeled before. Calfantic was this the first time? Could have sworn they have done it before.

I have no issues supporting a team that allows players to kneel if they so choose. It's what our anthem is all about...our freedom. My father, a pilot during WWII, would agree. We spoke about free speech, etc. often. Support for our military isn't expressed by how we react to the anthem. It's how we support vets via paying them appropriately, making sure they have access to quality medical care, educational opportunities, protection from toxic materials, etc. These athletes are asking that we as a nation do better. I see nothing wrong with that.

Go Bears!

Is the Georgia-Cal softball game going to be played today at 10 am? I noticed that no live stats seem to be availabe. I guess will find out later if there's no way to follow the game (if played). GO BEARS!

Cal is down 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a Georgia runner on second and one out. Randy Rooelling is having a rare off start already having given up four hits and four walks along with the four runs.
