Cal Men and Women have entered the verbal game for 2026 recruits.

Men's team welcomes Aiden Hammer from Fox Island, WA and King Aquatic Club. Ranked #15 by SwimSwam, he's on the US National Junior Team and specializes in distance free.

Halle West is a potential star. Her older sister, Mia, age 18, was Cal's runner up to Isabelle Stadden (age 22) at the King & Queen of the Pool event on 9/20/24 in SLO.

Halle has been setting Canadian age records. Here's an article from this year (2024):

SwimSwam (and Swimcloud) show that JD Thumann from Norman, OK has committed to the Bears. Thumann is SS's #13 ranked boy swimmer in the class of 2026. At this stage, it appears that young Thumann will be part of our free sprint and butterfly groups. JD is the the Bear's 5th recruit in the top 20 that appear in SwimSwam's "Way to Early Recruit Rankings" for the 2026 class.

Seems like lots of recruits from traditional ACC country. Is this just a coincidence or is the move to the ACC opening new recruiting opportunities?

Separate question - on the whole how is Cal doing recruiting woman swimmers post-Mckeever?

The top swimming schools (Cal, Texas, Florida, NC State, Indiana, Stanford) recruit nationally and internationally. Cal has multiple stars from the east coast, including current stars Destin Lasco (NJ), Dare Rose (NJ), Matt Jensen (Pa.), Jack Alexy (NJ) and Dare Rose (NJ). Other east coasters include freshmen Carter Lancaster (Fl.), Freddy Klein (NC), Roman Jones (NJ) and Lucca Battaglini (NC). Joining the ACC certainly won't hurt east coast recruiting.

Dave Durden and David Marsh have performed a recruiting phoenix act, in rescuing the program after the McKeever debacle. The 2024 is good, especially with late addition of a couple of international talents. The 2025 was set to return Cal to the top, but the recent decision by the 2025 class #1, Alex Shackell to "take a gap year, is seen by many the first step in decommiting from Cal to join her siblings at Texas. Regardless, if the rest of the 2025 verbal commits honor their verbals, Cal will be in the national championship discussion with Virginia and Stanford..

Looking at our 2025 recruit class, don't think there's roster space or scholarship money for him. Unfortunate, but ''tis the reality of college recruiting.

Cal breaststroke is in very good hands. She'll have 3 years of training with the incoming freshmen duo of Elle Scott (top US junior breaststroker) and Silje Slyngstadli (Norwegian elite breaststroker), and 4 years training with 2026 classmate Halle West (Canadian junior team breaststroker).

Cal adds Japanese Olympian Airi Mitsui to 2025 class.

Cal adds Airi Mitsui, who will be a terrific training partner for incoming frosh butterflyer Annie Jia. The Japanese flyer, whose converted time in the 200 Fly would have placed in the A finals at the 2025 NCAAs, likely has two years of NCAA eligibility. Way Too Early Recruit Rankings: Girls High School Class of 2026

4. Ava De Anda Riverside Aquatics Association Riverside Poly-tech High School Riverside, CA
De Anda is one of just two swimmers under the 49-second threshold in the 100 free, the most valuable event in college swimming, and will be flirting with the 48 barrier this season after ripping a 48.27 en route to winning the CIF state title in May. This class only has eight swimmers who have an NCAA cut from 2024, and De Anda's comes in the 100 free. The Riverside product won the 200 free with a PB at the same meet, going 1:45.98 to make her also one of two sub-1:46 swimmers in the class. She owns a blistering best time of 22.44 in the 50 free, and has split as fast as 22.06 with a flying startdrop-dead speed given she still has two seasons of high school left.

5. Kelsey Zhang Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics Saratoga High School Saratoga, CA
At this point in her young career, Zhang is faster in the 200 fly than the top-ranked recruit in the class of 2025, Alex Shackell, was last year. Shackell of course is coming off making the Olympic final in the event, so you can say Zhang is in good company. The reasoning behind the comparison is to illustrate how strong Zhang is in the event relative to most swimmers coming out of their sophomore year of high school. She's at 1:53.51, and the next-fastest in this class is…1:56-high. Zhang is more than a second quicker than the cut-off for the NCAA consolation final in 2024, and within striking distance of making the 'A' final. She's got three strong events with the 100 fly (52.08) and 200 IM (1:57.26) both just shy of the NCAA cutline, and her versatility is on full display with competitive bests in the 200 and 500 free and 100 breast.

Top 20 NCAA Swimming Recruits In The Girls' High School Class of 2026

9. Ava De Anda (Previous Rank: #4) Riverside Aquatics Association Riverside Poly-tech High School Riverside, CA **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 100 free: 48.27
  • 50 free: 22.44
  • 200 free: 1:45.98
  • 200 IM: 2:01.61
  • 100 fly: 55.30
  • 100 back: 56.43
De Anda is still the second-fastest 100 freestyler in the class, but didn't seriously approach her best time in the event last season, which results in her falling five spots in the rankings. In May 2024, the Cal commit blasted her way to CIF State titles in the 100 free (48.27) and 200 free (1:45.98), and this past season, she repeated in the 100 free (48.92) and placed 4th in the 200 free (1:48.36), both of which were her fastest times in 2024-25. In the 50 free, De Anda set her lifetime best of 22.44 in December 2023, and posted her fastest time in May at 22.62. She's got 16 career swims sub-23, showing impressive consistency, and she'll be a key relay contributor for the Golden Bears throughout her career and a likely scorer individually in the sprint free events. At the Futures Championships in Sacramento at the end of July, although she narrowly missed her LC 50 free best time in 26.16 (26.00 from 2023), she threw down a pair of quick relay splits (25.68, 25.87) to show some good form entering her senior year.

5. Kelsey Zhang (Previous Rank: #5) Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics Saratoga High School Saratoga, CA **Committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 200 fly: 1:53.51 (best in class)
  • 100 fly: 51.78
  • 200 IM: 1:57.15
  • 400 IM: 4:13.27
  • 100 back: 53.59
  • 100 breast: 1:01.34
  • 200 breast: 2:14.32
  • 500 free: 4:48.16
  • 200 free: 1:48.38
  • 100 free: 49.97
  • 50 free: 23.11
The fastest 200 butterfly swimmer in the class, Zhang's best time of 1:53.51 is still on the books from April 2024, but her season-best from 2024-25 of 1:54.16 still distances the next-fastest in the class (1:55.62) by a wide margin and lands right on what was required to earn a second swim at the 2025 NCAAs. Her PB is just six-tenths shy of what it took to make the 'A' final (1:52.91), and at U.S. Nationals, she placed 10th in a new LC best time of 2:10.62 to punch her ticket to the World Junior Championships. The Cal commit made improvements in the majority of her other events, including cracking 52 for the first time in the 100 fly (51.78), chipping off a tenth in the 200 IM (1:57.15), bringing her 400 IM to an elite level (4:13.27), and becoming a threat in the 100 free (49.97), 100 back (53.59) and 100 breast (1:01.34) as well. On paper, Zhang looks to have a clear-cut event schedule with the 200 IM, 100 fly and 200 fly, but we can't look past what she can do in the other strokes, which will boost relay value and give the Cal coaches options for dual meets. Her 100 fly PB is under the NCAA cutline from 2025 (51.87) and she's not far off in the 200 IM (1:56.69).

Top 20 NCAA Swimming Recruits In The Boys' High School Class of 2026

1. Baylor Stanton (Previous Rank: #1) Gwinnett Aquatics Brookwood High School Lawrenceville, GA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 200 back: 1:40.58 (best in class)
  • 100 back: 46.57 (best in class)
  • 200 IM: 1:44.04 (best in class)
  • 400 IM: 3:41.50 (best in class)
  • 50 free: 20.32
  • 100 free: 44.23
  • 200 free: 1:35.87
  • 500 free: 4:17.92
  • 1000 free: 9:05.98
  • 1650 free: 15:13.99
  • 100 fly: 47.60
  • 200 fly: 1:45.02
  • 200 breast: 1:56.77
With Manteufel not dropping any time in the mile, Stanton's four second drop in the 400 IM, along with continued improvement across a range of events, is enough to keep him in top spot. He ranks in the top ten in a staggering nine events, with class-leading times in four of them. Although he has not dropped time in three of those four this year, he has been within 0.13 seconds of his best in all of those three.
He has the versatility to pick pretty much any event lineup he chooses, but he seems to be settling into a a 200 IM/400 IM/200 back schedule. He would have qualified for NCAAs in the 400 IM this year, and been just half a second away in the 200 back, so is already primed to make some noise with a year of high school still to go.
He has a top-ten ranking on every stroke, and that kind of versatility is unique in this class even Tim Wu has a relatively weak breaststroke. He made the final in the 200 IM at World Juniors recently, placing 6th, and has some strong times in meters as well as yards. Cal have a phenomenal swimmer here, and one who takes this #1 ranking on merit.

5. Tim Wu(Previous Rank: #6) Pleasanton Seahawks Dougherty Valley High School San Ramon, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 200 IM: 1:44.55
  • 100 back: 47.20
  • 100 fly: 47.26
  • 200 back: 1:43.46
  • 200 free: 1:36.01
  • 100 free: 43.86
  • 50 free: 20.48
  • 500 free: 4:22.38
  • 400 IM: 3:50.75
Wu has a very similar profile to Stanton, a jack of all-trades who ranks right near the top of the class in multiple events. He does not quite have the 400 IM prowess of his future teammate, but is only just behind in freestyle and fly. He has made some big leaps this season, most notably in backstroke. In the 200, he has gone from 1:50 to a 1:43.46 that ranks 2nd in the class behind Stanton, and he's dropped 2.5 seconds in the 200 IM to also rank 2nd.
Going 47-low in both the 100 back and fly, along with 43.8/1:36.0 freestyle speed, means he should be able to slot onto almost any relay. Like last year, he does not have a class leading time, but is in the top-ten in seven different events. Add that to the improvements he's made this year and he's nailed on for a top-five spot here. He is knocked down slightly by the similarity of his profile to Stanton's, but Cal is getting a real prospect with Wu.

7. Albert Smelzer (Previous Rank: #10) Greensboro Swimming Association Page High School Greensboro, NC **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 50 free: 19.51
  • 100 free: 43.04
  • 200 free: 1:36.28
  • 100 fly: 47.68
  • 100 back: 48.34
Smelzer has dropped time in all five of his main events this year, and now has the 2nd-fastest 50 free in the class. He is hundredths away from Austin Carpenter in the 100 as well, hacking off 0.83 seconds, and has gone from 1:38.15 to 1:36.28 in the 200. His lineup is the most valuable in the NCAA, and the improvement he's shown make this placing fully deserved. If he can turn on of the 200 free or 100 fly into an elite third event, there's no reason to think he couldn't be higher next year.
He should also be a great relay swimmer, and has 50 free splits of 19.2 and 19.4 from this season in addition to a 22.29 50 back leadoff. As a pure sprinter who can stretch to the 200 and dabble in the stroke 100s, Smelzer has a lot going for him.

Honorable Mentions

JD Thumann (Previous Rank: #13 ) Sooner Swim Club Norman High School Norman, OK **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 50 free: 19.93
  • 100 free: 44.20
  • 100 fly: 47.35
  • 100 back: 47.81
  • 200 fly: 1:46.23
  • 200 back: 1:44.51
  • 200 IM: 1:48.76
Thumann has expanded his repertoire from last year, but his lack of a true main event sees him drop a little in these rankings. He is a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, marrying sub-20 50 free speed with 47-point swims in the the 100 fly and back, and has three strong 200 times. However, his college lineup is unclear right now, and he doesn't quite have the 100 free to be a relay weapon just yet. His versatility may become a calling card, but if he can dial in on a single event or two as well he'll be a lock to return to the top 20. He has not swum in long course this year, so it remains to be seen if he will push on in the fall or build through the season as he did this year, but he showed nice improvement in backstroke this year, going from 49.0/1:48.2 to 47.8/1:44.5. Some more incremental improvements along with a big jump or two would be ideal for him.

Jordan Ragland (Previous Rank: NR) Life Time Northern California West Park High School Rooseville, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best Times:
  • 50 free: 19.61
  • 100 free: 43.91
  • 100 back: 47.83
Ragland has been on a phenomenal improvement curve this year, dropping from 21.50 to 19.61 in the 50 free and 45.79 to 43.91 in the 100 free. He is just a tenth off the top of the class in the former, and adds a top-ten 100 back in which he has dropped nearly five seconds this year. Having recently flipped his commitment from Louisville to Cal, he gives them a strong 1-2 sprint punch with Albert Smelzer. However, he has only broken 20 seconds three times in the 50 free, all within eight days in May, so will need to build a little bit more consistency to ensure he joins the established sprinters in the top 20. Adding a quality 200 freestyle, or developing his 100 back into a serious third event, could go a long way to him doing so.

https://www.swimcloud.com/swimmer/2831247/

World Champs Qualifier Kassy Yeung Verbals to Cal for the Fall of 2026

" ...

Her 200 fly conversion was just a few spots outside of the consolation final at the Women's NCAAs from last season (24th, exactly one second outside of 16th), comfortably under the 1:55.92 to qualify for NCAAs. She would have been even closer in the 100 fly (22nd, .44 seconds outside of 16th).

By the time that Yeung makes her collegiate debut, there is a good chance that she could be in a position to make an NCAA final (or multiple) as a freshman for the Golden Bears, and could be a mainstay on future Cal relays.

Yeung has already represented Hong Kong at three different World Championships (two SC, one LC), bringing a veteran international resume into the Cal program as a freshman.

Cal's 2026 recruiting class includes Isabele Wolk, Halle West, Kelsey Zhang, Ava De Anda, and Egle Salu. "
