Foster, Savva Notch ACC Awards
California track & field’s David Foster and Valentina Savva have been named the ACC Men’s Track Athlete and Women’s Freshman of the Week, respectively, as announced by the ACC on Tuesday. The Golden Bears are the only ACC team to have two representatives on this week’s list.
This is the second career conference award for Foster, who was named Pac-12 Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on May 7, 2024. Over the weekend in Spokane, Washington, the three-time All-American tied his own school record in the men’s 60m with a time of 6.54, which ranks third-fastest in Division I this season and was enough to place second to NCAA leader Max Thomas of USC (6.53). He also won the men’s 200m race with a time of 21.22 that ranks second all-time on the men’s indoor program lis
Savva is the first Cal women’s freshman to win a weekly award since Cherrelle Garret in 2008. Her weight throw mark of 19.61m (64-4) leads all rookies nationwide and ranks sixth among all ACC women this season. She placed second in the event at the Spokane Sports Showcase as part of an all-Bears podium that also included winner Giavonna Meeks and third-place finisher Adrianna Coleman.
Foster, Savva, and the Golden Bears will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
