Butler Named To Preseason All-ACC Team - California Golden Bears Athletics

The ACC has 15 of its 18 members playing softball. Cal and Stanford are projected in the upper half. I would imagine that the Bears are not higher due to a lack of proven pitching.

And only the top 12 make it to the ACC tournament...

It sounds like Anders will be back this week.

Thank god. Our defense was horrific. A .939 fielding percentage!!!

Cal will not data stream any of the five games this weekend in Long Beach. In the SF Chronicle today, they had Stanford, Santa Clara & San Jose State softball all listed as being telecast online. Stanford is hosting a tournament and ACCNX will show all of the games. Santa Clara will be on ESPN+ and SJS will be on Mountain West Network.

Two Thursday games were cancelled in the Wilson Invitational. It has been raining most of the day.

As was pointed out last week, Cal is not the host of these games and consequently has no control over whether or not the games are live streamed. The live stats feature is listed as being available for all of the games.

This week I am aware that the live streaming is not under Cal's control. For any sports fan in the modern era, to not be able to see 9 of10 games is not satisfactory. I do not feel comfortable making too many critiques when I have not seen the action in question.

This week's schedule is soft, but next weekend's opponents are on an entirely different level

The more that I think about this-the more that I realize that most of the different Cal sports that I follow are available to watch. Women's water polo, mens & womens swimming, women's soccer, women's gymnastics, women's tennis, volleyball, field hockey, etc.

Two of the five softball games have been already cancelled, and the Oregon State game has been moved up to 2:30pm. Saint Mary's & Southern Utah are out.

Overall, I am pleased with the lineup changes. The one that I don't understand is replacing Harmony Andrade at 3B with our back-up catcher. Supposedly, Andrade had played at the hot corner as her regular position. The first ball hit to Alyssa Herrera ends up E5.

Harmony Andrade is struggling bigtime. She is hitless for the season and struck out looking on three pitches. Hulon, the blonde from Texas, started for the Beavers last season. Lagy Quiroga breaks up her no hitter with a single to RF.

Cal's pitcher, Ryann Orange, has a no-hitter through four innings, but the game remains deadlocked, 0-0.

Bears take a 1-0 lead in the T5th on an unearned run. OSU made an error on a bunt play by Mika Lee.
Orange retires the Beavers in order in the B5th to preserve the one-run margin. Hulon returns the favor with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth.

Top of the 7th, Bears add two runs but could have added another. Lagi Quiroga stole second but attempted to take an extra base and was thrown out. The next batter, Mike Lee, singled. In the B7th, the no-no was thwarted by a lead-off single. The Beavers followed with two more singles and another Bear error at third base. The score is now 3-1 with the bases loaded and one out. The top of the Oregon State batting order is coming up.

The person keeping the live stats doesn't understand baseball (or softball). I have at least three or four misstatements during the game. The official scorer gave a hit to Herrera on a botched sacrifice bunt that got the runner, Phillips, thrown out at second base. Another time a baserunner moved up a base without any explanation. It's either an error, a passed ball or a wild pitch. The second out in the last inning was made on an unassisted force play at 3B with the bases loaded. The runner scored from third but the runner from second was out advancing to 3rd. The live stats person gave a hit to the ninth-place hitter and an RBI. The last out was also hard to follow with the runner evidently caught in a rundown. My conclusion is that one hit should be subtracted from each team. GO BEARS!

That ending was kind of scary…again the defensive issues. I just don't understand.

Great job today, Ryann. I think it's important for her confidence she got this win. 6 no hit innings!

coach spencer is juggling lineups in search of a capable fielding 3rd baseman with the departure of last season's team leader...in tempe andrade misjudged a couple of balls/a cutoff & the offensively explosive phillips is probably better suited to 2nd base with home run champ butler moved to right field which might be her best fielding position

today the strong armed herrera got an opportunity at 3rd base, alyssa puts another big bat in the starting line up & is fearless playing any position

the 3rd base position is the biggest question mark in the softball program right now, the job is WIDE OPEN

If you were really aware, you would not have had reason to blame Cal for the lack of the stream. Similar to you blaming ESPN on Sunday for preventing you from seeing the stream of a game that hadn't started yet.

Are you going to tell me that being unable to see 9 out of 10 games is acceptable? I was watching the baseball team debut for a couple of innings tonight just to see some live action. Why don't you take me off of your list, so I don't have to experience "you" every weekend. Geez.

I believe he is trying to explain to you that the discussion is meaningless because Cal has not been in control of such matters for these two tournaments. They have to deal with whatever the tournament organizers have in place.

Yes, it sucks. But to call it "unacceptable " implies that there was an opportunity not to accept.

I think there's some Fr nerves and Andrade will hold down 3B.

We do have a top 30 recruit coming in next year who plays 3B. From the Firecracker org who's produced many a talented player for the Cal program. So that's good.

Acacia Anders appears not to have a clue at the plate, yet. Why not let her hit #9 in the batting order until she begins showing signs of life. I see that the Bears are trying another 3rd baseman tonight. I hope that someone
over there can play defense.

Kaylee Pond doubles and Mia Phillips singles her home to tie the score. Phillips thrown out at second. Cal is getting 2-3 base runners thrown out on average per game. It's hard to evaluate when one cannot see the action.
Lagi Quiroga thrown out on the bases, again. Bears lack runners LOB because they are thrown out on the bases.

An idea just popped into my head. Cal plays Iowa State tomorrow and that was Kaylee Pond's original school. Pond played the hot corner (3B) her entire freshman season there. Did her knee surgery cause her to lack the mobility to play there now? Just curious...Maybe she could solve that problem ?

s71, in tempe the 3rd base coach continued her 2024 season reckless base running decision multiple times costing the bears runners at critical junctures

guest who has attempted the most steals this season??

the catcher who is after last inning's caught stealing attempt is now 1 for 4 this season, lagi does not got blazing footspeed

chelsea should flipflop the coaching assignments & move to 1st base where she can less cause damage on the basepaths

Shocky1-I was aware that she was thrown out multiple times in six games.

Cal was supposed to score a ton of runs this season to overcome a lack of pitching. It's not happening. Kansas has seven hits compared to Cal's three through six innings. Ludwig appears to be getting stronger the longer that she goes in this game.

Reimers got two strikeouts in the T6th. C'mon, Cal, it's time to win this pitcher's duel. Anders can't get a ball out of the infield. Reimers is returning to form and pitched shutout ball tonight. Now-it's time to walk this game off with the winning run.

If we spent some money and held on to high caliber pitchers like, RR, or pick some up through the portal, perhaps we'd play in Clearwater Florida or Puerto Vallarta. We wouldn't be relegated to playing in these janky tournaments without streams or ESPN.

With the move to the ACC and the requisite travel for conference games, there is little chance that Cal will ever again play in early season tournaments outside of the West region. As it is, they will be on the road two weeks at a time, twice this season. I think the players education is more important than your entertainment.

Your obsession with RR is unhealthy. She left, get over it.

oc, the arrogant randi roelling (and her overly involved dad) wuz NOT liked by her teammates due to her disrespectful selfish behavior, got it?

it's also true that cal softball hasn't developed significant nil donors at this time, it wuz really a dumb decision by the financially irresponsible jennifer simon-o'neil to extend coach thru 2028 but jenny is tryna get ahead of the financial tsunami heading towards the cal athletic department as the #2 person in the dysfunctional department who has consistently worked against the football & men's basketball programs as part of her agenda

s71, alyssa herrera looked great in tempe & has 100% earned a starting role in every game yet the head coach is rotating in other players ahead of her despite her leading the team in hitting

herrera should either be the starting designated hitter or 3rd baseman in EVERY game along with spelling lagi at catcher at times, her bat is too valuable to be sitting in the dugout

Shocky1: I agree with your assessment of Simon-O'Neil, but I think you are wrong to believe that Coach didn't deserve to be extended. We are lucky to have one of the best young coaches in the game, someone who is in the process of building a long-term successful program, the right way. The team has gotten better every season since she arrived, and she is doing it by treating her players with respect. How many of our top players have left before their 4th year since Coach arrived? RR, yes, but who else?

Pitching is a frustration, but that is true for the vast majority of D1 teams. Franchise pitchers are few and far between and college pitching coaches capable of developing a franchise pitcher are even rarer. So far, we haven't found the solution, but I have hopes for Deering based on her prior results. If not her, then I'm willing to show Coach a little patience.

jack, agreed that chelsea is a passionate developing coach with a high upside but there wuz no need to extend her contract...spencer is a great fit in berkeley, what other school might recruit her away??...she would not be a good fit in the deep south sec or the redneck truck stop towns big 12 & nobody wants to coach in the snowy big 10

her 3rd base coaching decision making & failure to start the 2025 season's hottest hitter alyssa herrera is mind boggling

the bears got 5 pitchers with upside but they are not so dominating that they don't need strong a strong infield defensively...the return of anders is obviously a huge plus despite the fact that her ribs are still banged up & hitting/timing might take a while...figuring out 3rd base is gonna be critical

Iowa State is hot, winning three consecutive games here in Long Beach to even their record at 4-4. The Cyclones defeated Oregon State, Long Beach State & Southern Utah.

Acacia Anders connects for her 1st hit of the season, a double, to drive in Mia Phillips with the first run of the game. Frosh RHP Miranda De Nava has a run to work with after one inning. She does her job with a 3 up, 3 down shutdown inning.

Kaylee Pond leads off the second against her former team, Iowa State. She singles to RF and subsequently steals second. ISU's Ralston must have a good changeup because she has struck out Quiroga, Bell & Herrera looking on two strike counts in the first 2 innings. Mika Lee HBP. Nailyn Marshall doubles to left field to drive in two. Clutch hit needed desperately by the offense. Bears 3, Cyclones 0. Marshall picked off of third base by Iowa State's catcher. Lagi Quiroga follows with a single to left-center field that would have plated another run IF Cal would simply be more prudent on the bases.

Miranda retires the side in order, again, in the T3rd. Kaylee Pond gets another single to RF that brings home Elon Butler with run #4. Pinch runner D'Auna Johnson had pinch run for Tianna Bell and was thrown out stealing. She would have scored ahead of Butler for a fifth run. Unbelievable.

De Nava does it again (1-2-3) in the T4th. Iowa State brings in their best pitcher, RHP Lauren Schurman (2.00 ERA).

Trouble brewing in the T5th, with a single, a walk & an error by second base, Mia Phillips, with one out. Iowa State has a chance to get back into this game now. Miranda bears down and escapes damage.

Jessie Clemons homers for ISU with 2 down in the T6th to make the score 4-1. Schurman finishes her third inning of work without yielding a hit.

Miranda De Nava hurls a complete game, 4-1. She gave up only 1 run on 3 hits while walking one. Her record is now 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA. Frosh, De Nava, is Cal's one legit starting pitcher that has stepped forward
early in the season.

Cal's pitching actually did an excellent job in this three-game series but the offense was on the quiet side. The Bears went without a homerun and scored only 2, 3 & 4 runs in the sweep of the opposition. Base running was horrific and the infield defense was improved but only ok. GO BEARS!
