No word from Knowlton on situation? Calbears did remove Howells and shows Carney as interim head coach. This is Bockrath level fumbling losing top coach and the recruiting class. Surely this move did not catch Knowlton completely unaware. I dont know which is worse - he knew and fumbled or he didnt know because he wasnt involved or invested.

18 days and nothing. Assuming Carney is a silent hire, while waiting for a Home-run assistant hire for a big announcement. Although Knowlton is a known bungler at least he didn't blow the softball hire.

This is one is tough .. 2025 Quincy Walters long-time Cal commit heading to Michigan now.

The need for a new HC is NOW!!!

Bears have lost half (3 of 6) of their next two recruit classes (2025 + 2026) already without naming a new HC. Also, lost best returning gymnast, eMjae Frazier, to the transfer portal. I doubt that the team will be competitive next year with the current rate of attrition.

I'm shocked that several high-level gymnastics coaches have not been attracted to this job?

There is plenty of talent on the squad for next season. Lots of four and five stars just not that experienced routines coming back. The only loss from the current squad that was unexpected was eMjae. She graduated early. Was there more to the story than that? I dunno but seems not related to losing the Howells.

I would assume a number of Assistant coaches from across the country applied for the Cal HC position. Linas Gaveika ex Denver assistant coach is still available and highly thought of. Taylor Spears an assistant coach with Arizona is also said to be interested in HC openings. I'm not sure where the coaching search is at. Unfortunately we have Knowlton involved. Cross fingers.

Someone on the college gymnastics fans fb group has said they heard that the new cal head coach will be announced this week. Hopefully this is true and it helps them stop losing recruits.

Update:

The Cal coaches were hired in May.

It is being reported now but effective April Clemson fired Amy Smith from the position of gymnastics coach for cause, citing verbal and mental abuse / irresponsible treatment of student athletes.

My guess, most likely Head coach Geralen's hubby will be a new assistance. Think he was a coach also in Minn. Perhaps another wife & hubby tag team. Makes sense to me.

Think there is one more coaching spot. I would really like Kyana George but she seems pretty happy at Texas Women's University. She originally from Texas.
