On the flipside, would you say that this coaching duo has left the program in very good shape and is ready for another top coach to step in and continue the program's excellence?

Depends on how much the AD is willing to invest to keep the team moving in the right direction. The bills are coming due for our ACC move and I have to wonder if this played a role in their departure.

Good point.

And how many on the current roster follow these coaches to Clemson.

Well if the current gymnasts and commits stay in the fold .... Ondine will be critical to keep in the fold especially for next year. There is plenty of talent here.

Yup what worries me is:

1) who are our AD is
2) yes im sure money is going to be a factor in Cal Athletics overall
3) which gymnasts follow the Howells to Clemson: current or commits

What i feel good about:

1) For the overwhelming most part, these ladies love Cal and understand the importance of a Cal degree
2) their practice facility was recently renovated and upgraded
3) the ACC will probably pressure Cal Athletics to maintain the gymnastics quality. The ACC gymnastics is a recent addition to the ACC and Cal is marquee program being a consistent top 5-10 program.
4) Women's gymnastics overall is growing sport overall and the gymternet (believe me its a very vocal thing) love Cal gymnastics. Cal will be an attractive program for high quality coaches and assistant coaches

Clemson is full I believe, no one is following them this year.

But I do believe all the gymnasts now have 30 days to decide whether to transfer or not; there will definitely be poachers for Ondine and company.

While women's gymnastics is growing, the edict from Cal after the House Settlement is going to be about budget management, so I could see a lot of things being cut to save money for the near future.

Yeah timing for the Howells leaving couldn't be any worse. Lauzon & Williams & co leaving. eMjae graduating early. And the unknown of college sports especially at Cal given the pending House settlement.

The gymternet is already on Ondine watch! Bears icons are always a good sign

Disappointing but understanding. Don't like the direction of collegiate sports! It's not just about losing our coaches but how many money they will invest in our athletes (nil).

Clemson did the same thing five years ago when they hired Stanford's softball HC, John Rittman. Clemson upset Florida State, 2-1, on Saturday to capture their initial ACC Championship.

Janell McDonald would be my first choice if she thinks Cal has more talent to work with so she can improve on her fifth place NCAA finish a few years ago.

Can't see Janell leaving UCLA with their team on the rise too.

If Cal had a decent AD, the Howells would not have been looking to move or receptive to a move. And it is unknown what, if anything, Knowlton did to keep them. And I thought Bockrath was bad in mishandling Snyder

UCLA was the runner up this year. She has a very good recruiting class coming in with Jordan Chiles set to return for one more season.

Coaching search needs to happen quick. These are all top notch recruits.

A couple of names that have been mentioned for HC:

Taylor Spears - Assistant Coach at Arizona, she was a Oklahoma gymnast. Beam is her speciality. Good recruiter.

Linas Gavieka - former Assistant Coach at University of Denver, long-time assistant there and helped build that program into a power. Looking for a HC opportunity. Good recruiter. Vault & Bars.

If you hear of other candidates, please post.

I think if Kyana George, former Cal great and current assitant coach at Texas Womans University, had a couple more seasons under her belt, she would be a great candidate. Whoever gets hired should hire her as assistant.

JT-I thought that these three recruits were our 2025 recruit class:
Cal Women's Gymnastics Pens 2025 Recruits - California Golden Bears Athletics

Can you please link the info regarding these three other recruits? In other words, the Bears had six incoming recruits (now five). I must have missed their announcement. I get my information from the official calbears.com website.

jt, appreciate ur passion for this team!!

the reality is that the financially bankrupt cal athletic department instead of rightsizing it's bloated bureaucracy to 15 championship programs like women's gymnastics would prefer to under the failed leadership of general knowlton & his #2 in charge jennifer simon-o'neil would rather run their empire of 31 teams that cannibalize dollars away from potential national championship teams to perennial losing programs

there's ZERO accountability in the cal athletic department & that starts with the chancellor who is tryna endow every sports team which is never gonna happen as he continues to lose credibility/political capital within the berkeley academic community

there's no chance the ucla coach is gonna end up in berkeley, the bruins are getting full share big 10 rmedia revenue dollars ($75,000,000+) while the clueless bears are getting 30% acc revenue dollars ($10,000,000)

Here is the link from College Gym News. The three most vulnerable (well two now) would be the 2027 class. The three incoming for the upcoming season can ask out of their NLI. But Clemson looks to be full already for this upcoming season.

Yeah Shocky there will be a reckoning soon enough. Who knows which programs will be targeted and which will actually be cut. It is the reality.

Many point out which women's sports to target. But Shocky shouldn't some men's programs be the first targeted, then you can do the corresponding cuts to the women'a programs? I am not sure how title 9 plays into it.

But this is just the latest example of how inept Cal Athletics still is.
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
jt, baseball should be the 1st team to be cut & evans diamonds "sold" back to the central campus to finance other sport teams like women's gymnastics & repurposed for the greater good of the university

title ix requires an equal number of cuts to both men's & women's "counters"

SebastaBear has shared his thoughts on Justin Howell and on the sustainability of non-revenue sports. Really great insight.

Given the constraints that Cal gymnastics operates with, i think i would definitely go with a young dynamic up and coming assistant coach. So Kyana George would shoot up my rankings.

John Carney would be acceptable too. Did great things at Mizzou. Was National Asst. Coach of year. Doubt if there would be a big Exodus if he was hired.

The Cal baseball program should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Neu is on my all-time top 5 Cal coaches I despise list. Marianne Stanley's number one, along with got to leave, Wilcox, and Fox.

Saw on twitter someone said Carney is interim. I haven't seen anything official. He would make a good choice and he brings in Kyana George as an AC. Would be a solid staff.

Howells started coaching at Cal in 2012. Had mediocre to decent results until 2019. Then his wife Elizabeth became co-head coach and they started taking off. I presume her recruiting Got us going to where we got a second nationally. Just to remind y'all this didn't happen overnight it took them seven or eight years to get to where they were, and having his spouse join was a big help, especially in recruiting.

Have already posted extensively on the football board so not going to replay everything here but baseball is way down the list of sports to be cut if that is necessary. Baseball and softball are miles ahead of any other sports except football and basketball when it comes to media exposure. Since no sports after football and basketball offer any revenue opportunity the criteria to keep them becomes do they help with the branding and exposure for Cal athletics. Sports like soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, field hockey etc. all are fairly big teams with similar expenses to baseball but offer zero media coverage opportunities no matter how successful they are. It's a "maybe" vs a "no chance" so the maybe wins every time.

Baseball has had a 500 or better conference record 6 of the last 10 years, basketball 3 times in that span, and football 0 times in that span. Baseball has had a player win the "Baseball Heisman" as the best player in the nation in the last 10 years. This is a program that is pretty successful

During the last two months baseball and softball were dominant players on the conference networks, and beginning this week will become dominant players on ESPN for May and June. ESPN is still the leader by far in college sports coverage. It at least offers Cal a chance to increase its brand and awareness which indirectly helps the major sports. Swimming, soccer, tennis, water polo, etc. all get zero coverage. Cal is great at swimming, and it gets absolutely zero coverage, and absolutely zero benefit. So, with similar revenues and expenses, just the chance that baseball and softball can help with branding and awareness makes them a better value proposition than any other non revenue producing sports. It's just a fact.

I've also posted extensively on that board how women's gymnastics is the fastest growing college sport and it's media exposure if growing rapidly. This is a sport Cal should be investing in. In fact, I would divert money from basketball to women's gymnastics where Cal is currently a national player and national brand so an investment can have an impact and result in a large increase in revenue in 2-3 years. It's time to consider opportunity costs and invest in sports with high growth potential and no long history of dominant players that have already claimed all the branding potential. Women's gymnastics is that sport.
