I was curious about Roelling's results in the super regionals
Her U of Georgia team faced off against Florida
Florida won the series 2-1
Roelling pitched the opener as the starter with the following line
4.2 innings 9 hits 4 runs all earned with 4 walks and only one strikeout in a loss
in game 2, she got the save, pitching 0.2 innings with no hits walks or Ks
in game 3 she pitched 4.1 innings giving up 5 hits 6 walks 2 hit batters and 6 runs all earned with 4 Ks in a
loss
admittedly she was playing against a great team, but her 10 walks in 10 innings and 2 HBP stats with a total of
only 5 Ks indicates that she is not a top line pitcher as she was predicted to be after two full years of college
competition
nonetheless, against lesser competition, she would have likely been of use to Cal

TBH she had a statistically unimpressive year and Georgia was blessed by being in the weakest regional.

Matchups matter.

I would've still taken her this year... but she walks way too many batters.

The NIL settlement will implement an annual cap that schools can distribute money to its athletes (I believe it's 20. 5 million as the cap)

So, schools will have to decide where to allocate those resources. I imagine most of it will go to football and basketball.

So now, that money will come straight from the athletic department. None of these outside boosters, random Joe Schmo's paying an 18 year old 1 million dollars, etc. That will be no more.
Thanks. Good in theory and yeah, most will go to Football and Basketball.I'm still skeptical of the hidden deals.

I guess kids will have to rely more on the actual NIL deals where they're promoting the free schwag, equipment, apparel, accessories, etc

All the millions being spent on our football and basketball recruits has resulted in nothing but .500 record, and just 13 wins for men's hoops. Over on the football board they're parroting a 10 or 11 win season based on a supposedly weak schedule. Our openers at Oregon State and I suspect a loss. I'm not optimistic about any perceived football success anymore the coach is terrible-and we've all known that for years now.
kc1121

From a ESPN article:

Each school's athletic department can decide how it will divide that money among athletes. Not many major programs have shared their budget plans, but those that have say they will spend the overwhelming majority (up to 90%) of their money on football and men's basketball players.

Athletes are also still allowed to make money from selling the rights to their name, image and likeness (NIL) to other parties. The settlement creates a new set of rules and a brand-new organization called the College Sports Commission that will try to stop boosters from using NIL deals as additional salary payments, a practice that became commonplace in the past several years.

However, many teams are already working in concert with booster collectives to find creative ways to pad their payrolls with third-party NIL deals that fit within the new rules. Industry experts say football and basketball teams will likely have to find ways to provide several million dollars beyond the salary cap limits if they want to field a team that can compete for championships.

All-American Jess Oakland Enters Transfer Portal D1Softball

Former Saint Francis star Jess Oakland enters the transfer portal from the Minnesota Golden Gophers. I guess that I'm dreaming but she was perhaps the top player in Northern California three years ago. She has two seasons of eligibility left. Any NIL available for this phenom? I believe that she was MIA (injury) last season. Oakland missed the 2025 Cal opener vs Minnesota. Maybe due to her injury mishap, she might consider returning home.

Bruin have a bunch in the portal including freshmen pitcher Addison Fisher. She was 16-2. 113 inning, 100KO, and only 7 homers. And she is 5' 11". Love tall pitchers

Edited. Looks like Addison was mentioned earlier in this thread.

Emma Jackson is Jazmyn's sister. Not sure how she wound up going to Salesian.

I had to do a double take on Salesian when I saw it also. Perhaps the family moved to Wesr CoCo county when the older sister went to Cal (?). Salesian hadn't really had a strong program for years and was in the lower division of TCAL for awhile

Another local kid is in the portal - SS Soo-Jin Berry played at Iowa via Pittsburg HS

Cal Fanatic-please don't praise and build up the fan's expectations for the future with these "phenom" young pitchers. Last year it was Randi Roelling, and now it's Miranda De Nava bailing out on Chelsea's program after a single season. College athletics has begun a new era. I don't see how Cal can be competitive at the moment, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

This is the first year when most of the best players have departed Chelsea Spencer softball. The top assistant coach, the batting coach & recruiting coordinator, has gone on to greener pastures, too. She has been losing the vast majority of her assistants, year-in, year-out.

It's like the women's gymnastics, volleyball & basketball teams that are in a ***re-build mode***. I'm contemplating not taking these teams seriously any longer. I'll *wait 'n see* how the rosters look for next season, but, right now,
I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel...

I'll do whatever the hell I want, S71. Who the hell are you to tell me otherwise? Go back to praising Donald Trump on the women's basketball forum before telling me how I can and can't post.

Young women are free to leave and live their lives as they choose. If De Nava decided to go, that's her call. I'm just bummed she did.

Berry would be a good pickup. Jenkins will probably go SEC.

Jeez, another UCLA player in the portal. I still stand by my belief that the transfer portal is a disaster for college sports-though I do respect each player's right to leave if they feel it's necessary.

Feels like there is a better way to do this.

God is S71 you're getting curmudgeonly in your old age. Quit ragging on Calfanatic she's my favorite poster and the MVP of the board. Have you not learned that as a Cal fan you need to step back and accept the usually negative consequences of us rooting for one of the worst athletic department in the now defunct NCAA. U Really got to step back because you are living and dying by Cal woman's Athletics. For instance I don't root for the football team anymore I can't stand that Oregon hick coach that we have, I literally think he's basically defrauding Cal by giving all of his buddies who are no talent OCS and assistant coaches high paying Cal assistant coaching jobs. And I know it's my right to do feel that way. (Institutional malpractice) I'll be the one laughing on the football board after everybody's moaning about our loss to Oregon State. Hell we'll probably lose to Texas Southern and San Diego State too maybe Wagner! Just one more time S 71 step away learn to step away don't expect anything. Learn to lose gracefully look at Boston college look at northwestern look at Wake Forest they're 180 games under 500 as a football program and yet they seem to be able to lose gracefully and keep their head held high. Check out Boston college's season this year they were last or next to last and almost every single sport that they played yet they just seem to have some essence of class that towers over what Cal has. Why is that how is that possible they don't compete in anything, yet they don't grovel.

P.s. s71 I also root for Oklahoma and all sports believe it or not. I was looking forward to Oklahoma versus Cal and gymnastics and Oklahoma versus Cal in the women's college world series I picked up Oklahoma as a fan about 7; years ago and in football of course that's when the FB program started declining. The Sooners have the same problem as cal they got a defensive orientated coach a former linebacker, no less and he's only 22 -17. (0-3 bowls)
If he gets off to a slow start this year he's long gone way before the season's over too. Lol.

Kc my long-term view exists Cal will never ever ever be a part of whatever combination of SEC and big1G evolves. I think we'll be down to about 15 sports and probably in some combination of back to the pac-10 and mountain West conference etc.

I myself would be happy if Cal right now picked up their stakes along with Stanford and just moved back into the "whack-10.". Right now the reconstituted pac-10 needs one more school to qualify for the cfp. They'd take us back with open arms. Of course there's many on this board that absolutely positively don't want to share a conference with Fresno State.

Coach Charmin Smith is probably texting you right now trying to convince you to re-consider. Not.

She's got 7 new players coming in next season. All are very good and will contribute. If you saw her on the Valkyries postgame show last Saturday, you know darn well that she's not in the "re-build mode". She's hoping to exceed last season's accomplishments.

Maybe the UCSB Gauchos can give you better "tunnel light". lol.

S71, I'm with you, buddy. I see a lot of unrealistic optimism sometimespeople acting like we have a real shot at players when we honestly don't, and I often find myself shaking my head at the hopes and dreams being thrown around. I get that hope is important, and dreaming big can be a good thing, but when it comes to softball, our fanbase just doesn't have a strong grasp of what's actually realistic. That lack of understanding leads to a lot of misinformed expectations.

I'll admit, I've been overly critical of the program lately, which is why I haven't posted everything I know. Honestly, I thought we were headed for the rock bottom, I think we are we're basically there right now. Things are rough, especially with Denava entering the portal (which was an eventuality; only a matter of time). If people knew half of what's been going on behind the scenes in this program, I am even more pessimistic of our AD's abiliity to make critical decisions and comprehend how to lead this program out of the pit. He needs to go.

There is...it's a binding contract. If we're going to have professional athletes representing our universities the only way to eliminate this annual chaos is to bite the bullet and enter into binding contractual relationships including a CBA and formal representation for the players. I am repelled by the notion of a state supported university operating (and, most likely, subsidizing) an entertainment enterprise but that's where the momentum appears to be taking us

I agree there's a better way to approach all of this, but the reality is it is out of our hands. That means we have to do the best we can with the hand we've been dealt.

Our university has long struggled to support athletics at the same level it does academics. That failure falls squarely on the shoulders of our Presidents and Athletic Directors over the years.

What's especially frustrating is seeing how schools like UCLA manage to strike a better balance. They've proven it can be doneit just clearly can't be done by our current leadership.

We're watching one strong program after another fall apartfootball (2000's), basketball, gymnastics (current), volleyball (2010's), softball (2000's)… the list keeps growing. It's beyond frustrating to be a Cal fan right now.

If De Nava is gone, then no...that's not going to happen. We might have had enough arm power with her and McGowan, but without her, I imagine it's going to be rough. I wouldn't want you living in unreality or lacking a "proper grasp of expectations".

Kayli Counts' former teammate at Pacific, Brynne Nally, is in the portal. She had a decent freshman year. I'd hope we can at least snag her -we're not pulling anyone from UCLA.

CalFanatic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'll just say this: Coach Spencer hasn't kept the same staff for more than two years. There have also been some cryptic posts from former staff members that suggest there were issues to say the least.

I try to keep a positive tone, because let's be clear-recruits 100 percent read this. But i've called some bad behavior. I still remember the uncomfortable experience when Ninemire completely botched a former Sorcerers recruit (who wanted to go to Cal) by showing up four innings late and leaving before the end of the seventh. I called it out then on this board, and I'd do it again. If certain posters have information they've seen firsthand, lets hear it!

At this point, it's probably best to sign off until the portal closes. Still, I'm genuinely excited for the new stadium and the upcoming season ( I always am) even if things look a little dimmer than they did just a few weeks ago.

There is a ton of NIL money elsewhere. Many schools are sitting on a pile of NIL money that needs to be spent upfront on players prior to July 1st when the House settlement kicks in. So players are jumping on the money.

The lower level programs are seeing players jump up to higher level programs that are seeing players leave for the NIL.

It may change in future seasons as schools will be paying rather than the collectives. Right now these collectives have to get players paid upfront to avoid having to send the deals through the clearinghouse.

But there are always going to be players that develop at Cal and seek to play at a more successful program. These players see how rabid the fan support is elsewhere and want that environment.

No doubt Cal softball is in a tough place. Cal needs to drop a ton of sports that do not support themselves. Softball is a required sport that needs more support than it gets currently. They are building a new facility so maybe that will help. But the program beyond NIL is resource poor compared to the major programs elsewhere. And the ACC is a top 2 conference in softball so the competition in the conference will be strong. You can improve the program but it is a hard road to get to really good.

Also, let's be clear, S71you might consider yourself in the "truth teller" camp, but you're just a ******. Why are you still here, again?
