...

She also was enjoying the afterglow that came from leading California to an NCAA championship last weekend in her final meet as an amateur. The win was especially emotional because the Golden Bears finished third last year.

"We were really disappointed with how we did last year," Franklin said. "We made a decision as a team, almost immediately when we got home, that we could be better and we were going to be better.

"The feeling of walking over to your team, hugging everyone, knowing you just accomplished what you've been working so hard for, for 10 months, it's just unbelievable."

That's something Franklin will miss as a professional. She loved being part of teams at Cal and Regis Jesuit High School. The races at the 2012 London Olympics that meant the most to her were relays.

"Winning really doesn't mean anything if you have no one to share it with," Franklin said. "It's not going to mean anything unless you have those people who will be so excited for you, who've supported you and you know they've had a piece in that. When I'm on a national championship team, a high school state championship team, a gold medal-winning relay, I get to do it with people I love, with people I care about. Sharing in that joy and that success and that love, that is incredibly fulfilling to me.

"Obviously I get a huge sense of fulfillment and happiness when it's individual as well, but for me, it's even more special and it's really amplified when I get to share it with other people."

...

This week Missy returns to Cal to finish a semester that ends in May. With the world championships looming in August and her second Olympics a year after that, in Rio, Franklin plans to reduce her class schedule. She never has had the luxury of preparing for major events without carrying a full class load.

She is determined to get her degree, but doesn't plan to carry a full course load until the spring of 2017.

Franklin hasn't decided whether to find a new coach or remain with Cal's Teri McKeever. One problem is that she will be training and racing all over the world, but McKeever's focus has to be on her college coaching.

"There's definitely a bit of an unknown," Franklin said. "I have incredible options, and I still need to sit down with Teri. We need to have a really long talk."

...

"One of the things Teri taught me is that it's OK to say what your dreams and goals are," Franklin said. "I think it would be amazing to be the most decorated female Olympic swimmer of all time. That's a huge goal, that's unbelievably lofty, and I have incredible women before me who have set the bar so high. I may reach it, I may not, but either way I'm going to fight for it. That's the exciting part."

Missy Franklin Earns Honda Award for Swimming

http://www.calbears.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30100&ATCLID=209997942

Sophomore Missy Franklin has been named the Honda Sports Award winner for swimming & diving, becoming the fifth Golden Bear to receive the prestigious award, Chris Voelz, Executive Director of THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) announced Thursday.

The Honda Sports Award is presented annually by the CWSA to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics." With this honor, Franklin becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the 2015 Honda Cup, which will be presented on June 29 in a nationally televised broadcast from Los Angeles, Calif.

Franklin was chosen by a vote of administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Finalists included Stanford's Simone Manuel, Leah Smith from Virginia and Louisville's Kelsi Worrell.

"When I look at the list of swimmers that have won this award before me, I feel truly honored to be included in such an amazing group of athletes," said Franklin. "This has been a picture-perfect season and I am so lucky to swim with such an amazing team and staff at UC Berkeley."

Franklin was named the NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and helped Cal to the team title. She set an American record on her way to victory in the 200-yard freestyle and also captured the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard backstroke. In addition, Franklin played a role in wins by the 200 free relay and 800 free relay.

At the Pac-12 Championships earlier in the year, Franklin claimed the 200 IM, 200 free and 200 back crowns and anchored the 800 free relay to an American record time.

She established a school record for most combined individual and relay crowns at one NCAA meet with five titles this season. She is a 14-time All-American and a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-American.

"To me, the Honda Award is the ultimate award for female collegians," said head coach Teri McKeever. "Missy definitely falls in line with the strong tradition of not only Cal swimmers but other notable female athletes at Cal. It's an honor for her, her team and the university. At the NCAA Championships, Missy obviously had a terrific meet where she swam lifetime bests and was on a championship team. This is just the cherry on top and very well deserved."

Four Cal swimmers have earned the Honda Sports Award previously Caitlin Leverenz (2012), Dana Vollmer (2009), Natalie Coughlin (2002 and 2003) and Mary T. Meagher (1985 and 1987) with Meagher winning the 1987 Honda Cup.

Five Honda Sports Award winners for swimming & diving have gone on to win the Honda Cup- Tara Kirk (Stanford, 2004), Cristina Teuscher (Columbia, 2000), Meagher (California, 1987), Tracy Caulkins (Florida, 1984 &1982) and Jill Sterkel (Texas, 1981).

THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for 37 years, recognizing superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $2.7 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs at the institutions.

20 Question Extra: Missy Franklin Part 1

4/21/2015

By Bob Schaller//Correspondent

While the Cinderella story team and individual titles her second year at Cal deservedly garnered headlines and praise, Missy Franklin says she knows that her first year provided at least as much growth and development. She talks about her college experience, and how she hopes to build upon it, in this first of two 20 Question Extra installments.

1. To go out with an NCAA team championship and your domination in "everything 200" at the meet, how did it feel?
Missy
: Oh my gosh, it was absolutely amazing. I honestly couldn't have written it any better.

2. While the title was great, you have thought about a lot more than that, haven't you, from your time at Cal?
Missy
: I didn't want to swim in college to win a national championship. I wanted the experience, and to be part of a team something bigger than myself. I just remember being so happy after NCAAs, and not just because we won which was great but happy because I had this experience, and I had it at Cal. I got so much of what I wanted, and I am very thankful and humbled by so many great experiences.

3. So I am catching this online, and I think, "Neat, Missy's in the 200 IM" and then you win it?
Missy
: That (laughs) was an amazing feeling. If someone would have told me you will be doing the 200 IM in college, I would have laughed at them. I honestly had no idea where that would come from.

4. But to go from swimming it again, to winning it at NCAAs how does that happen?
Missy
: It's hard to find that magic you had as a kid. You aren't dropping seconds every time you swim. Sometimes, you only go best times every four years. So it's kind of different.

5. Was there a time when you thought you had that kind of potential in the 200 IM?
Missy
: I was at Georgia doing the 200 IM, and I was with Kara Lynn Joyce, and when I finished and looked up at the clock, and I thought the clock (laughs) was broken because I hadn't been that surprised in a long time by the scoreboard. I forgot how amazing that feels, to be genuinely surprised by a swim. To get that kind of feeling back was amazing.

6. And on top of that it helped the team, right?
Missy
: That was the most important thing, definitely, to get the team points. And it felt great for me to be able to show myself if I put my mind to it, I can do new things.

7. In winning the 200 free and lowering your own American record to 1:39.10, you looked so comfortable, how did it feel?
Missy
: The 2 (200) free was amazing. I had been thinking about that for a long time, coming back from the summer with all the rehab and physical therapy for my backit was hard to take time away from the pool and think about what I needed to do to be able to go 1:39 in six or seven months that all started with the rehab because I had to start getting ready way back then. And that's exact what happened. I had been thinking about 1:39 since that 1:40 last year.

8. And best of all, to see you back in the 200 backstroke finally, what was that like, and to win that title after basically being taken away from the event for your time at Cal last season?
Missy
: The 2 (200) back felt it just great to do backstroke again. It felt like a long-lost friend. I really missed it last year, honestly. It was so fun going back to it. And to have it feel so much better than I anticipated I almost thought I had more there, and that is frustrating, to finish and think there was maybe some more there. But to be back in the 2 back, was awesome.

9. And another title, right?
Missy
: Again though the most important thing is I got the most amount of points for my team, and I am so thankful to be a part of that with my teammates and coaches and everyone who supports the program and works with us at Cal.

10. I know your Mom pretty well, and I can't fathom better parents for you certainly you appreciate that a great deal, don't you, having parents lie that?
Missy
: Absolutely 100 percent, my parents are my best friends. They have been with me every step of the way. I couldn't have made so many decisions without them. Having them be so supportive of me with it it feels so unique that my parents trust in me to make the best decisions at this point. But they raised me the right way, so I could become a responsible young woman and start (laughs) this "grown up" life! They knew I was ready to make decisions, even the hard ones. They are content to be happy for me and support me. All they ask is that I have all of the best information that's available and consider all the options and consequences before I decide something.
UrsusArctosCalifornicus

11. And it's worked out pretty well, hasn't it?
Missy
: I am one of those people whose life is based on my faith in God. Everything happens for a reason I truly believe in that from the bottom of my heart.

12. Big growth from your freshman year to your sophomore year?
Missy
: Looking back on last year how hard it was, no experience or preconceived notion could have prepared me for what it was like. The freshman year, you think all you need is really fast people and you can win (an NCAA title). Going through PAC 12s and NCAAs, you realize you need a lot more than fast swimmers.

13. A lot more?
Missy
: You need so much more. Such as the respect you have for each other, and the coaches, It's so much more than fast swimmers. (Head coach) Teri (McKeever) and (Associate Head coach) Kristen (Cunnane) give us that as a team. That's why Teri has had so much success with this program. Last year, it was so hard, going in and being underestimated but still having a lot of talk and expectations around the team, and then having a DQ on the morning of the second day and knowing that even with us going all out, and giving it our allthat was really hard, and we have learned so much from that. I am so proud that we kept fighting even though we knew we weren't going to win last year. And what we learned from that meet got us to this meet. We decided in April last year that wasn't our best, and we would do whatever it took to be better. This year, we knew we were ready. That's why we were so excited. That's what we were ready to show everyone this year.

14. Teri called me the day after NCAAs for a 20 Question Tuesday, and while she's of course awesome, she can be hard to track down because she's so busy lo and behold, while we were talking she mentioned that you had rubbed off on her, isn't that pretty neat?
Missy
: Oh absolutely, it's been amazing being in her program. And it means a lot to hear that about her! Teri doesn't really (laughs) talk like that a whole bunch of the time! But we have talked about how my glass is more half full, she's more on the half-empty perspective, but we've rubbed off on each other. She's made me realize I have to take a hard view at things, so I do believe as I always have that the world is full of amazing people, but not all of them have my best interests at heart. It's hard to come to terms with something like that, but because of her, I have. It's been amazing, learning so much from her. I could not have asked for more. That's the way it's been my whole life with these incredible people coming in at key times and helping me develop as a swimmer and thinker; I realize this is a time in my life I will look back on and cherish so much. And we always need to learn what we can from whatever we are doing, because there are so many great life lessons you can learn from being in the pool.

15. I know you loved your time at Regis, but do you perhaps appreciate even more how well it prepped you for college?
Missy
: I am so fortunate for how Regis prepared me for college. Even with that though there's only so much you can learn before you get to college a lot of what you learn is on your own when you get here. Especially at a place like Berkeley, where they do not hold your hand and that's one of the best parts about it for growth. You come from where you are, and you are who you are they believe you can make it, or they wouldn't have accepted you. So the attitude is, "You are an adult who signed up for this and you are going to have be ready to study at one of the best public universities in the world here in these classes with some of the brightest minds in country,. And the world." And with classes, they are so different from what you would expect. One of my friends from back home called me talking about how great it was she didn't have any homework, and that sounded weird to me. So I said, "Make sure you look at your syllabus." She was like, "What do you mean?" I said, "For a lot of assignments, the professor might not talk about it in class, because part of it is they count on you to be responsible and follow the syllabus." Naturally, she goes to read it, and found out she had a lot of work to do. That's part of what you embrace about it, if you want to do well; there are very high expectations here. That's great. I am the kind of person and a lot of people here are the kind of people who rise to that experience and challenge.

16. Made for a long two years of intellectually stimulating but work-intense homework though, right?
Missy
: I have really appreciated being treated as a student; regardless of whether you are an athlete here, professors do not tailor things for you or make anything easier. You accept that you are a student and hold yourself to that expectation. You are working out maybe six hours a day, which perhaps not all other students are doing, but this is what you signed up for, so they don't make it any easier for you, and they shouldn't, either.

17. The growth as a member of the team has been palpable from first practice to last NCAA swim as well, hasn't it?
Missy
: Absolutely, I agree with that 100 percent. It's really interesting seeing where i am this year from last year. It's a light-year kind of difference. It's rewarding and meaningful to see how much I have grown in the program. The great thing that Teri does is tailor your own personal program and yet it fits in with the team's goals, so everyone gets what they need. But you also have to ask for what you need, because you are an adult when you get here.

18. It was different for you training without the back and doing middle distance freestyle your first year, but it really builds on your great cardio base, right?
Missy
: My freshman year I spent more of my time training for longer freestyle events than I used to do. I put in so much to get ready for PAC 12s and NCAAs last year in those events. I did miss the backstroke in fact I missed it a lot. But I did what the team needed me to do. Now, I get back to backstroke, and breathe (laughs) whenever I want!

19. What else is cool about swimming at Cal and for Teri?
Missy
: I think one of the things that I love about Teri is how untraditional she is. We do a lot of untraditional stuff. The training at the beach we have been able to do is amazing. And swimming in the ocean has done so much for me.

20. How much does having the NCAA experience help even though it's short course compared to long course?
Missy
: It's very different being collegiate and then not collegiate but (at NCAAs) having 13 swims in 3 days teaches you a lot about being tough especially the emotional impact of that meet. Even though NCAAs is different, you gain strength and confidence, and that will help and be needed in an 8-day long Trials meet. With that being said, there's definitely different difficulties and issues with an 8-day meet vs. a 3-day meet, but definitely as far as preparation and perspective, you can learn a lot.

20 Question Extra: Missy Franklin Part 2

4/23/2015

By Bob Schaller//Correspondent

Last time in 20 Questions, Missy Franklin told us about her time at NCAAs and how things changed from her first year as a college student-athlete changed as she experienced her second year. Today, she tells us more about her life out of the water, and shares some fun, non-swimming "personal factoids," in a special 20 Question Extra.

1. You have a good program at Worlds. Certainly you have Olympic, and all kinds of other international experiences, but how well does this line up with your goals moving toward Trials?
Missy
: Absolutely it lines up, and I am so excited about that. That's definitely the way I am looking at it; I've done this before, so I can do it again, and it is an awesome springboard going into Trials.

2 All the great places to eat out there, how do you decide what to eat?
Missy
: So Berkeley does (laugh) have the best food, which is great. But it was honestly really hard my freshman year I definitely struggled with my diet. Not being on my own so much but the lack of access I had to the food I wanted to eat, and not having a kitchen to cook in.

3. But that changed this school year right?
Missy
: I room with (teammate) Kristen (Vredeveld), and she is so incredible. Yes, getting an apartment and having a kitchen changed all that. I loved learning how to cook, and I am always trying new recipes the Food Network is on a lot! I get so much enjoyment finding ways to make things healthy and things that are really good for me, so we are having a blast making new, good things.

4. I'm all about the dorm thing from experience, but that time comes when it's just time to get your own place doesn't it?
Missy
: Oh my gosh, I was so ready for an apartment! I am really happy I lived in the dorm and got that experience. But even being as social as I am and I do love being around people having "me" time is so important to me, and eventually I found that harder to come by in the dorm. Now in the apartment, having an awesome roommate, even though we spend a lot of time together hanging out, we have our own rooms and this great living space. And it's easier now just to sit down (laughs) and watch six hours of Netflix!

5. On training with Coach Teri McKeever, you do some "non-traditional" training what are some things you really enjoy?
Missy
: We do cartwheels, handstands, jump rope it's all so fun. And it's so cool because we have our reasons why we do everything. Everyone on our team can hold a handstand, and there's probably not a lot who can do that. But you do that training for different reasons and it develops your muscles, your core, and everything. So it's unconventional and it might even (laughs) look silly at times! But there's a reason, and it works.

6. You are on a team of NCAA champs but also in classrooms with champions in the academic community, aren't you what's that like?
Missy
: Well, I have never worked so hard in school in my entire life! I always pride myself on being a good student it's as important to me to get a good grade as it is to go a best time. Having a good education means so much. I am surrounded by great students who are just as invested in getting a good education and putting all the time needed into it, and that is so inspiring and motivating every single day. I love being not being "just a swimmer." I am so thankful and blessed to be a student at Cal. It is unbelievably challenging, but at the end of the term, it is just as rewarding to get through a tough term and demanding that of yourself.

7. Okay, we never talked about this, but Prince Harry is pretty cool on the scale of foreign dignitaries back when you met him and hung out in Colorado Springs, what was that like?
Missy
: I absolutely adore him. He was so down to earth with us. They had these formalities of how we had to act, what to do and what not to do, to curtsey, don't put your hand out first until he has done it, what you call him, so I am thinking I am totally going to forget this and say, "Oh hey Harry, what's up and as I go to hug him someone (laughs) is going tackle me! But then there he is, he puts his hand out and says, "Hi, I am Harry," and he is so down to earth, especially considering the live he has lived.

8. I worry if I were there I'd inexplicably break out my fake British accent and just look like a fool.
Missy
: I actually DO have a problem of picking up that accent and starting to talk like that! And it's not that I am making fun of someone, I just think it sounds so cool! Thankfully, I did not (laughs) do that to him. But hey, I bust out my British accent randomly; thankfully, it didn't happen that time!

9. Hard decision to pick a college, though that turned out well, and another one coming up and where to train how hard is it for you to wrestle with these things?
Missy
: You know, it's really hard to put into words what that felt like, because when you make a hard decision you know no matter what, some people will agree or disagree. So you trust in yourself to make the best decision for you, because you are the one who has to live with it. So you get all the information you can and the opinions of those you trust, and you trust in yourself moving forward. I know that coming to Cal was the best decision. It always is a leap of faith, but it's the most amazing feeling to bet on yourself making the right decision and come out of it with everything you hoped for, and more.

10. Random question, favorite color?
Missy
: My favorite color is purple. Though really, I can never decide I have this internal debate (laughs) on stuff like that. I am super girly.
UrsusArctosCalifornicus
How long do you want to ignore this user?
11. So you had the painted nails going on at NCAAs and that looked pretty cool didn't it?
Missy
: I love painting nails. And I'm all for anything that makes you smile up on the blocks!

12. Biggest change from Denver to the Bay Area?
Missy
: Probably the biggest single thing is the weather. Honestly, I love the weather out here, but I miss the snow so much! When everyone was getting excited around Christmas, I'd be (laughs) saying, "Wait, it's not Christmas, there is no snow and it's 70 outside!"

13. What do you know now that you wish you knew before you first started college out there?
Missy
: Absolutely nothing I am so thankful I have been able to learn and experience things for myself. That's a big part of life, learning to deal with the unexpected. I wouldn't be who I am had I come in knowing completely what to expect. Figuring things out has really shaped me in a wonderful way.

14. "Touch the Wall" ended up being huge, what do you make of that?
Missy
: I just want to thank everyone involved in that and everyone who has experienced it. And apparently, (laughs) the DVD also has footage on it that even I haven't seen yet! Apparently, there are hours (laughs) of out-takes I can only imagine what those are like! I was just so proud of how they made it into a story. They had hours and hours of footage and they made it into this incredible story, and that takes such talent and thought. The way they weaved Kara's story and my story together, I am just so proud.

15. What was college swimming like, being in the PAC 12?
Missy
: It was a very, very different experience and always so exciting. You learn as you go along. For the first couple of months, you have to get accustomed to people saying, "Go Bears!" when they see you in the Cal stuff, and now I take such pride in hearing that and saying it back!

16. The face tattoos at NCAAs were also awesome, weren't they?
Missy
: Face tats they are the best.

17. Face tats?
Missy
: (Cal and National team teammate) Rachel Bootsma abbreviates (laughs) everything when she talks, and she is (laughs) so rubbing off on me! I think one of the things with that and the nails is you can't really do that much to dress yourself up when you race, and the best part about college swimming is the school and team spirit. So from nails to face tats, it's pretty awesome.

18. What do you eat pre-race?
Missy
: Carbohydrates. Anything carbs, especially when you are about to swim. At NCAAs, it's so important to make sure you have energy. I am all about (laughs) Italian food, so if it's got pasta and garlic, I am all in! Another favorite food would be donuts hands down. I'll have a donut whenever there's a break (at a meet).

19. You talked about Cal being the right college it worked out even better than you hoped?
Missy
: Because of the program that Teri has created here why I came here she is concerned with making great swimmers. She is more concerned with you becoming a great woman. There were times where things were hard, and I had to figure things out. I have learned about the value in doing things for me. I still am going to do all I can to make other people happy I still carry that with me, but I won't ignore my own happiness. It fills me with joy to be at a point in my life where I understand that.

20. No matter where you are, internally, you are really in a good place aren't you?
Missy
: I think I have really grown to be accepting of who I am that has really happened over the past year and a half. I am happy with where I am, and who I am, now. I trust I am on the right path to be a responsible, developed, fulfilled young woman. So I will take all the information I can in, but I will still listen to my heart.

Great interviews. Thanks for sharing, UAC. One angle I hadn't thought of previously is Missy's need for a coach who can travel with her to events. That might preclude Teri and Durden since they've still got to coach their teams.

NCAP just hired a coach specifically for Ledecky's location. Part of the reason given was that KL's coach Bruce Gemmell will be traveling with her so much over the next 18 months. Seems pretty clear Ledecky won't be on the farm next season.

Five-time Olympic swimming medalist Missy Franklin took time last week to answer questions from OlympicTalk as she announced a new role as a Laureus Ambassador.

Here are excerpts from the Q&A:

OlympicTalk: You met Mark Spitz for the first time when you won the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year last March. What do you remember about what he told you?

Franklin: We were with Mark for the majority of the weekend, dinner events and leading up to the actual award ceremony, him presenting my award, which was literally a dream come true. It seems like yesterday, and it also feels like 10 years ago.

One of the things that really struck me was we were at a dinner, and I think he introduced me to someone as the greatest female swimmer in the world. I was like, Mark, you can't say that! Just to have him introduce me to people like that. Here I am having Mark Spitz say that about me.

OlympicTalk: What's your upcoming schedule?

Franklin: I have three weeks left in my semester. I have two finals and a couple of papers to write. The finals are in anthropology and molecular and cell biology.

OlympicTalk: When's your next swim meet?

Franklin: Probably not [the Pro Swim Series at] Charlotte [May 14-17], because it's so close to finals. I am planning on [the Pro Swim Series at] Santa Clara [Calif., June 18-21].

OlympicTalk: Who would win an 800m freestyle race Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky?

Franklin: I don't think you could even answer that. Those are two people who you could never count them out, ever. It doesn't matter what race they're in, what they're doing. I honestly couldn't say, but I think it would be pretty fun.

OlympicTalk: Have you ever thought about racing against men?

Franklin: Actually there was a lot of talk after NCAAs that I should race [Stanford's] David Nolan while he does a 200 [individual medley] and I do 200 freestyle. I don't know why that came up.

Editor's Note: Nolan won the NCAA title in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:39.38, becoming the first swimmer to go sub-1:40 in that event. Franklin won the NCAA title in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.10, breaking her American record by 1.21 seconds.

OlympicTalk: Which swimmers have you asked for autographs?

Franklin: I think the only time I really ever asked for autographs was at [2008 Olympic] trials. A bunch of my friends that were there, they knew I would be on the pool deck, so I had a better chance of getting to [the famous swimmers] than other people. I was terrified. I was scared out of my mind to talk to these people. The two people I got them from were Megan Jendrick and Cullen Jones. They probably don't remember this at all. They were both so sweet. It's so funny looking back on that, this dinky 13-year-old totally star struck. Now I'm texting Megan and her husband all the time. They're sending me pictures of their beautiful children. And Cullen and I are such great friends.

OlympicTalk: What's the most unusual item you've autographed?

Franklin: A rock. I think it was at my local neighborhood school one day [in Colorado]. Ten to 15 kids came over and said, can we get your signature? I said, but do you guys have anything for me to sign? They went over to the side of the pool and grabbed rocks.

OlympicTalk: You famously did "the worm" at a school assembly in May 2012. When was the last time you did "the worm?"

Franklin: It has been a while. Like it has to be that prime moment to drop down and do it. I think I may have done it for a Pac-12 Network interview. They asked me if I had any special talents. I can do the worm. With all these wires, I plopped down and did the worm (video here).

OlympicTalk: Michael Phelps and other swimmers listen to music on the walk out to the pool deck for races. Why don't you?

Franklin: I listen to music on the way to the pool and pre-warm-up, but in terms of walking out, I take so much energy from the environment I'm in and the crowd. Those are the kind of moments I want to stop and pause and take in. When I walk out, and I'm hearing them say my name, watching the crowd, that's what gives me chills. That's what energizes me. I know it's different for other people, but I like to be super present and take in everything.

OlympicTalk: What would be your dream relay quartet?

Franklin: If I'm being totally honest, there's so many greats, but I would say maybe two answers. A 200 freestyle relay with Allison Schmitt, Katie Ledecky and Jenny Thompson. I honestly think my dream relay was the 400m medley relay at the London Olympics, being on that relay with Dana [Vollmer] and Schmitty and Rebecca [Soni].

Missy Franklin ranked 4th-most marketable athlete in the world

Missy Franklin has yet to swim in her first race or sign her first endorsement deal as a professional, but she’ll clearly have no problem recouping the millions she gave up to attend college.

The Regis Jesuit graduate and four-time Olympic swimming champion was jumped four spots to No. 4 on SportsPro’s annual list of the 50 most marketable athletes in the world. She is the only swimmer and the highest-ranked Olympian on the 2015 list, which is weighted toward an athlete’s marketability over the next three years.

The only athletes deemed more marketable in 2015: Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard (1), Brazilian soccer star Neymar (2) and Masters champion Jordan Spieth (3).

Franklin, 19, who announced in March that she would turn pro following two years at the University of California Berkeley, is set to compete at the Santa Clara Pro Swim Series in June, her agent told SwimSwam.com. Assuming she doesn’t have a race lined up beforehand, it will be her professional debut ahead of the 2016 Rio Olympics. She will also compete in World Championships, in Kazan, Russia, in August.

At the 2012 London Games, Franklin captured five medals, four of which were gold. Her collection of hardware also includes 13 World Championships medals (nine gold, three silver, one bronze) and four Pan Pacific Championships medals (one gold, two silver, one bronze).

Franklin, who gave up millions in endorsement money to spend two years at Cal, finished her college career with four individual NCAA championships — one in 2014 (200-yard freestyle) and three in 2015 (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, individual medley). She also helped Cal to a team title in 2015.

Missy Franklin Ranked 4th Most Marketable Athlete by SportsPro

"When NBC executives sit down over the coming months to discuss plans for the broadcast of Rio 2016, a first summer Olympic Games in an American time zone in 20 years, there will be plenty of long conversations. Then there will be one short one: Missy Franklin will be the face of their coverage.

She will appeal to those atop ‘the Peacock’, who have spent so many billions on television rights, for the same reason she appeals to so many Americans and, by extension, so many brands. Here is a clean-cut, clean-living and conscientious young woman, who brings a media profile and the promise of gold in the kind of quantities that once inspired a fevered trail to her native California. Four wins at London 2012, and six at the 2013 world championships, are evidence of a monumental talent."

Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin speaks on the sexualization of female athletes

DENVER Missy Franklin just turned pro a few weeks ago, but she's already quite aware at how quickly her life could change now. Or how she could keep much of it the same.

The Olympic swimmer has hired an agent and will mull sponsorships, all while trying to maintain a certain image she'd like to present to the world. Part of that image/branding process involves saying yes or no to certain opportunities.

Franklin was asked, during a Q&A session at the annual Association of Women in Sports Media convention here Monday, how she plans on handling offers that sexualize athletes such as ESPN's Body Issue, or Maxim.

"Especially so early in my professional career, that's why we put so much effort into picking such great representation. They know me and they know my values and at this point in my career that's something I want to be extremely conscientious of. I just turned 20 years old. I'm very young. In terms of coming off like that, I really don't want to. That's not really who I am and that's not what I'm about.

Other athletes may feel differently and that's OK; that's the way they want to be portrayed. Just because mine is different doesn't make it any more wrong or any more right. But I think the important thing is having that constant group around me that will help me make the best decisions for me."

Did also initially feel that Missy would return to Todd for her Rio preparations - long-time coach whom she has had much success and a synergy with, being close to home & family who are a key aspect of her life, getting some physical & emotional separation from her beloved teammates since it'd be hard for her to train with them but not be able to interact or be involved in meets and other NCAA-related team activities, less distractions, yada yada. Performance benefits of year-round altitude training + CO's lower state taxes relative to CA wouldn't hurt either.

Life as pro "the best thing" for Missy Franklin

Posted: 05/25/2015 07:27:51 PM MDT

The four-time Olympic swimming champion will work with Todd Schmitz and the Colorado Stars ahead of the World Championships

The life of Missy Franklin seems to have changed more on paper than in reality.

The four-time Olympic champion swimmer, who announced in March that she would forgo her final two years of college eligibility and turn pro, recently returned to the Denver area after completing her final exams at the University of California.

But while many of her friends embark on summer vacations, Franklin, 20, is transitioning to life as a professional. So far, it looks a lot like the life she had before, with four to six hours of training each day starting at 5:30 a.m., and a packed slate of upcoming races.

This time, though, she will get to cash in.

"I would have given anything to swim another two years in college," she said Monday in Denver at a luncheon for the Association for Women in Sports Media. "But I truly feel this is going to be the best thing, to set me up financially and get my career going."

With 22 medals from the Olympics, world championships and Pan Pacific championships, multiple records, and four individual and one team NCAA title, it's hard to imagine there could still be a "first" for Franklin. But in June, the Regis Jesuit High School graduate will make her pro debut at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Santa Clara, Calif.

Franklin said she will stay here through the summer and train with her longtime coach, Todd Schmitz, and the Colorado Stars. After the world championships in Kazan, Russia, in August, she will re-evaluate her options regarding her training schedule as she prepares for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

VIDEO: Missy Franklin takes on former Cal footballer Brett Buchanan in 'Buchanan Invite'

What happens when a former college football player challenges the world's greatest female swimmer to a swim-off?

The 2015 Buchanan Invitational, that's what.

Ex-Cal tight end Brett Buchanan took on Olympic hero Missy Franklin in a series of 25s this month at the University of California's Spieker Aquatics Complex. You can check out the video of their battle above, courtesy of Brett Buchanan on YouTube.

As with any great clash of sporting titans, the lead-up to the actual race is perhaps the most entertaining thing of all. Each competitor gets his or her own pre-race processional. Franklin, the 4-time Olympic gold medalist, enters first, showing off her trademark dance moves no joke, she even does the worm on the way to the starting end! before Buchanan enters in full 'Rocky' mode, complete with an entourage of supporters.

The two handle some pre-swim press by the pool, including such illuminating questions as "What was your opinion on FDR's New Deal?" Missy, of course, can deftly articulate her way around any tough question while still coming across like an inspiration, but you also have to give credit to Buchanan, who does appear to have a better grasp on the historical details of the World War II-era political agenda.

Finally, Franklin and Buchanan go head-to-head in a series of three 25s. We won't spoil the winner for you, but can note that it's much, much closer than you might expect. The big man can swim, and he gives Franklin a run for her money in what is billed as her first professional race.

San Jose Mercury articles quotes Todd Schmitz saying that Missy will train in Colorado up to the Olympics rather that re-evaluating at the end of the Summer. That scenario makes the most sense to me. She'd get as much individual attention as she needs and have the benefit of training at altitude. Teri or Durden couldn't duplicate that. Todd did say he's absolutely sure Missy will finish her Cal degree. Wouldn't expect her back at Cal before January 2017. If all goes well, she'll be extremely busy in Fall 2016.

Missy Franklin leaves Berkeley to train in Colorado

Swim star Missy Franklin has left Berkeley to return to train with her Colorado club coach.

In a move that had been rumored for much of the year, Franklin has re-united with Colorado Stars coach Todd Schmitz after completing her sophomore year at Cal.

Schmitz said Tuesday the move was motivated by a "combination of things" after the swimmer turned professional this spring.

"It is hard to argue against the success she had in 2010, 2011 and 2012," he said of Franklin's ascent to the top of the swim world that led to five medals at the London Games.

Schmitz, who has coached Franklin since she was 7, added that returning to altitude and "getting back to some comfortable settings" will help the swimmer prepare for the 2016 Rio Games.

"What I like to say to people is not being on stage every day and out of the limelight when work needs to be done and be in the limelight when she needs to be in the limelight," Schmitz said.

Franklin, 20, signed a professional contract shortly after leading Cal to the NCAA championship in March. She plans to make her pro debut next month at the Arena Grand Prix in Santa Clara. After that the swimmer will prepare for the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Franklin has qualified in four individual events and could be part of as many as five relay races.

Schmitz said his protege plans to remain in Colorado through the Olympics.

"We're at the end of third year of Olympic cycle," he said. I told her, 'Let's look at next 15 months."

After that the coach couldn't predict Franklin's course. When she entered Cal after the London Games, Franklin planned to compete in the NCAA for two years before turning pro. But she also said she would continue training in Berkeley while attending classes. Franklin still plans to earn her degree from Berkeley.

"I don't care if it takes me 20 years, I will get my degree from Cal," she said in February.

"Without a doubt, she intends to get her degree from Cal Berkeley," Schmitz said. "People want to nail that down."

The timing is difficult to predict because of what might happen in Rio next year and the opportunities afforded the 6-foot-1 swimmer from Centennial, Colorado. Franklin recently was ranked the fourth most marketable athlete by Sports Pro, an industry news magazine.

Instead of training in Berkeley with world-class Cal graduates, Franklin now swims alongside high schoolers and former Stars collegians.

"Missy doesn't want to be by herself," Schmitz said. "The program is integrated into what we do on a daily basis."

The coach expects Franklin to benefit from being around kids excited to be at the pool every day. But the youngsters also are pushing the star as Franklin has discovered in recent workouts.

"They keep her honest," Schmitz said.

Lunch with Missy Franklin
6/8/2015

"I was just swimming."

Missy Franklin, four-time Olympic Gold medalist, entered what most athletes would consider a death trap, a lion's den, or a shark tank. She willingly walked into a room of some of the top sports journalists in the country to sit down and have an open chat with them. At only 20 years of age, Franklin was up against journalists with years of experience that easily doubled her lifetime, and she handled it with nothing less than grace and sophistication.

Franklin has conquered college, foreign countries, elite competition and more, but her new recent adaption is "growing up." She laughs at the fact that it takes her 30 minutes to get through e-mails in the morning now. Franklin is on the cusp of her professional career and has nothing but high hopes. She explained her approach to the various companies that are now reaching out to her to become a representative of their brands. Franklin examines companies based off of their values and if those values do not match her own, she knows the relationship will not work.

Authenticity is an unparalleled characteristic, in Franklin's opinion, and it could not be more obvious when she speaks.

"I always speak from the heart. I always speak what I'm truly feeling," she said.

Whether it's speaking to the media or dancing like nobody's watching (when in reality, millions are watching), her secret to success is being herself and just having fun. Franklin attributes her Olympic status to enjoying herself in the years of preparation it took to reach the podium.

"I was just swimming," she admitted.

Franklin also explained her Olympic experience with the room as well. She walked us through the eight days she spent in London. She said that the practicing and the competing became so exhausting that each moment she was asking herself, "What do I have left?" From there, she pulled all of her energy and channeled it into whatever task was in front of her. She said surviving those eight days gave her all the confidence in the world.

Franklin has loose plans for her future after swimming, though they are narrowed in a certain direction.

She stated, "I know swimming is always going to be a part of my life."

But when her professional career comes to a close, she wants to work in education. Children and giving back are both very close to her heart.

"The reason why we do this is to inspire the next generation to do this," she explained.

When her final race is finished, Franklin would like to be remembered not for her medal count, but for the type of person she has been throughout the fame. So far, she is off to an awesome start.

20-year-old Olympic champion has returned to Colorado to be with her family in run-up to Rio

When Missy Franklin imagined her life as a professional swimmer, she couldn't have envisioned mornings like these.

In the predawn darkness on a recent Friday morning in a south Denver suburb, Franklin swam back and forth in a driving, drenching, bone-chilling rainstorm. In between sets, Franklin looked up at her longtime coach, Todd Schmitz, and uttered the most un-Missy-like of words.

"This is miserable," she said.

But she put her goggles back on and finished the 5,500-meter workout, her ninth and final pool workout of the week. Welcome to the not-so-glamorous part of Franklin's new life as a professional swimmer.

"Those are the days that most athletes just look at it and they go, 'This sucks. I'm going home,'" Schmitz said. "But she kept working hard and threw down some times that were amazing to me. She hasn't lost that kind of motivation."

But becoming a pro athlete certainly has its perks, starting with her first major endorsement deal with Speedo, for whom she will be prominently featured in ads for competitive swimwear and water-based fitness gear and equipment, the first of the company's athletes to do both.

For the first time in her life, Franklin, 20, isn't balancing her grueling practice schedule with schoolwork, after graduating from a private high school in Denver and completing two years as a psychology major at the University of California, all while winning four gold medals in the 2012 Olympics and nine golds in two world championships.

Finally, Franklin is collecting a paycheck for her work in the pool, and she has the satisfaction of being able to pick up the check after a meal out with her parents.

The first major decision of Franklin's pro career was to come home to suburban Denver. She left Berkeley in May after finals to resume training with Schmitz, who began coaching Franklin 13 years ago, when she was 7.

Leaving her Cal coach, Teri McKeever, who also coaches the U.S. national team, and her college teammates was heart-wrenching.

But Franklin thought it was the best decision to launch the next phase of her career.

"This isn't just a swimming transition. This isn't just a career transition. This is a life transition, and it was just really important to be surrounded by my family," Franklin told USA TODAY Sports.

Franklin's days start early in the pool by 5 a.m. and feature constant communication with Team Missy: her California-based agent, Mark Ervin, and publicist; her parents, Dick and D.A.; Schmitz; and her strength and conditioning coach Loren Landow, whom Franklin trains with three times a week.

Together, they are creating the training and marketing plan to propel Franklin to the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, next month and ultimately to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

"The world championships, don't get me wrong, they are huge," Schmitz said. "But the Olympics is it."

Franklin will make her pro debut this weekend in Santa Clara, Calif., her final tuneup meet before the world championships.

Franklin will swim seven events in Russia, as she did in the 2012 Olympics in London four individual events and three relays. She and Schmitz will discuss the possibility of adding an eighth event with the debut of mixed-gender relays.

"At the end of the day, what's the real goal? The real goal is to swim seven events in Rio. We have to weigh those things," Schmitz said.

Schmitz has little doubt that teenage, amateur Franklin would have said yes to the mixed-gender relay without hesitation. It's a longer discussion now that Franklin is learning that as a professional her individual goals, both short term and long term, must come first. The coach has seen Franklin take a more vocal role in her training and has watched her learn to say no sometimes something that doesn't come easily to such a natural people pleaser.

"She's at the point in her career where it's all about her. She has to make some selfish decisions," Schmitz said.

Privately Franklin has time goals in mind that she would like to hit in Russia, but she's not focusing on medal count. After a disappointing summer season in 2014, when she was hampered by a back injury in the Pan Pacific Championships, Franklin will gauge success in Russia on how her races feel and her level of confidence after each time in the pool.

"I'm so happy with where I am physically, with where I am mentally, and so I'm excited to get back there and not worry about any of that stuff and just be able to race again," Franklin said. "I'm going to do that and see where I am. And then I'm going to go from there and make sure I am where I need to be in, oh my gosh, 13 months."

The other major decision Franklin has made as a pro was picking Speedo. She has had years to imagine and plan her first marketing opportunity, and this was a natural start.

She picked Speedo for competitive reasons it is the brand she has worn in the pool for as long as she can remember but also because of the platform and exposure it provides. Speedo President Jim Gerson said the company is planning ad campaigns starring Franklin that will run year-round and not just during the Olympic cycle.

"Timing-wise, this is kind of perfect. The first thing that we really wanted to do was get a suit company so I would be ready for worlds," Franklin said. "We thought that would be an awesome way, a summer before trials next year, to really start laying that foundation and start working as hard as I can for them."

Already recipient of the Honda Cup as the top female collegiate athlete for 2014-15, Missy Franklin added another award for her remarkable sophomore season when she won the ESPY for Best Female College Athlete Wednesday.

The honor is the second ESPY for Franklin, who earned her first in 2013 as Best Female Olympian after capturing four gold medals and a bronze medal at the 2012 Games in London.

During this past year for the Bears, Franklin won three individual NCAA titles in the 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, helping Cal to the national team championship. Her time of 1:39.10 in the 200 free set an American record. Franklin was named both the NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year. In addition, she was voted the Academic All-American of the Year (at-large division) for her work in the classroom.
