The San Lorenzo Valley star, Maxwell, has a time of 10:04. She'll run the 800m & the 1600m at the CCS Finals this Friday night and at the state meet. These top two distance runners will probably compete in the 1600 meters, however. Anna won the 1600m at state last season. The CCS swept 1-2-3!
She being Bethan!! I believe she will be dropping the 1600 in the SS Masters and will only be competing in the 3200.
Yeah, sounds like she is gunning for the US National Outdoor Record of 9:48.59 set by Kim Mortenson in 1996. Bethan is obviously gonna have to do it on her own, cause there's no one near her to push her to that time. Hope she runs well and stays healthy for State!

Hey OBear!
No, I probably won't be attending the NCS Meet of Champions. Haven't been to one in several years as life has gotten in the way of that for me. I might check out the LIVE video feed, if I get the chance. Seems like the NCS does in fact have three top contenders in the 1600m, with seniors Tyler Olson of Livermore (4:07.99) and Blair Hurlock of DeLaSalle (4:08.33) and Fred Huxham (4:09.99) all running really well right now.
It does seem as though the section has been getting weaker and weaker over the years... as teams like James Logan are no longer dominant programs like they once were. In fact, there isn't even an NCS Girls Team in the "Top 10" State T&F Team Rankings right now, where 7 teams come from the Southern Section + Edison (CE) and San Lorenzo Valley (CC) by virtue of distance star Anna Maxwell.
I seem to recall that the "peak" of the NCS occurred in 2007 at the State Meet for the Girls. You had names like Jamesha Youngblood, Ke'Nyia Richardson, Cherrelle Garrett, Jasmine Cox, and the Purvis sisters Julian and Ashton.... not too mention 100/200 sprinter Jahvid Best in that classic 200m dash against Long Beach Poly's 200/400 guy Bryshon Nellum. Nellum beat Best in that 200m with a State Record 20.43 to Best's 20.67
Here's the Video of that 200m Race: Nellum in green. Best in red.
Nellum, who overcame a drive-by shooting and two gunshot wounds to his leg while at USC, went on to claim a Silver Medal in the 2012 Olympics on the 4x400m relay team (2:57.05) You might recall that he carried the American Flag in the closing ceremony in London. He won 4 Gold Medals at the CIF State Meet in 2007 and a total of 6 Golds during his prep career. Both are records. I still get "goose-bumps" to this day watching that 200m video above!
Also in 2007, former Cal Pole Vault Coach Scott Slover also coached Castilleja High of Palo Alto standout Tori Anthony to a national high school record in the pole vault at that meet as well (14-01).
It was an amazing Year for Prep Track & Field at State! 2007 was off-the-hook!!!
This year..... it should be interesting to see how DLS hurdler Marquis Morris does in both hurdle events. He was DQ'd last season at the NCS-sub section meet for a trail leg violation by the coach of a fellow competitor, and yet went on to win the 110's at State in 13.90 He's a senior this year and has run 13.93 and 36.94 in April at the Arcadia Invite. Morris' 36.94 leads the State. I hear he's being courted by USC.
Also interesting to note, is August Kiles the senior pole vaulter out of Tamalpais High. He jumped 16-04 last year at State and is jumping well again this year. He is coached by long-time Piedmont High coach, Chris Smith. Smith will be coming aboard the CAL T&F team full-time next year coaching the vaulters, in an event that has seen a tremendous amount of "turnover" for the Bears over the years. Coach Smith is well thought of and should make an immediate positive impact . . . giving Coach Mo Saatara more time to work with the throwers.
I urge anyone that has the time to drive down to Clovis for the State Meet next weekend. The facilities are top notch (they could hold an NCAA Regional there) and the competition is amazing. It's like a Mini National!

Maybe the well is drying up with Curtis Taylor now coaching at UO. He ran the EOYDP in Oakland that recently produced Ke'nyia Richardson, Trinity Wilson, Sasha Wallace, and the Purvis sister plus other and made Laney JC in recent years a track power in sprints. Always was hoping he became an assist. coach at Cal.

Yes going to U$C, along with locals Gabriella Cantrell and Madison Ricks

Great news but makes you wonder why we got rid of coach Slover then, which set back our PV program. Maybe this is a 2-fer..get coach Smith has his pv'er August. 8-).
Another future Bear, Garrett Corcoran of Villa Park HS, will be running in the distance races. He is the top male distance runner in the OC, and should be a threat in whichever event he runs. I understand he is an outstanding student and a really great kid.:gobears:

I did post some things on Garrett earlier. We really have 2 big time recruits, Garrett & Bethen for our XC and T&F team. It will be up to coaches to continue to develop these talented runners.
