Swim: Santa Margarita's McLaughlin makes it official with Cal



Reigning Register athlete and swimmer of the year Katie McLaughlin, now a member of the U.S. national team, signed Wednesday with Cal, her mother, Mary, confirmed.

McLaughlin led the Eagles to the CIF Division 1 title last season by setting the national record in the 100-yard butterfly and setting the county record in the 200-yard freestyle.

She went onto qualify for the U.S. national team in the summer in the 200-meter butterfly.

The senior swims club for the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

BERKELEY - Four of the top five recruits in the country, including a trio of U.S. National team members who will compete at the 2015 World Championships, highlight a six-member California women's swimming & diving recruiting class announced Thursday. Joining the Golden Bears for the 2015-16 season are Kathleen Baker, Amy Bilquist, Jennifer Campbell, Katie McLaughlin, Phoebe Lamay and Abbey Weitzeil.

According to swimswam.com, Weitzeil is considered the nation's No. 2 recruit, with Baker No. 3, [U]McLaughlin No. 4[/U] and Bilquist No. 5.

McLaughlin, from Dana Point, Calif., earned a bronze medal in the 200 fly while also finishing fourth in the 100 fly at Pan Pacs last summer. A four-time medalist at the 2013 World Junior Championships, she also won the 100 and 200 fly at the '13 Junior National Meet. In addition, McLaughlin broke the national high school record in the 100-yard fly at the 2014 CIF Championships.

Member of the 2013-14 U.S. National Team and National Junior Team touched third in the 200m fly at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships in Australia qualified for the meet by taking second in the event at the Phillips 66 National Championships (2:08.74) also finished fourth in the 100m fly (59.03) chosen for the U.S. 2015 World Championships squad in the 200m fly broke the national high school record in the 100y fly at the 2014 CIF Championships when she was timed in 51.78 also set a CIF record in winning the 200y free (1:44.66) and swam anchor on the winning 200y free relay and 400y free relay considered the No. 4 recruit in the country by collegeswimming.com won four medals at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships gold in the 800m free relay and in the 200m fly, bronze in the 400m free relay and in the mixed 400m medley relay ... earned five medals at the 2013 Speedo Junior National Championships (gold in 100m and 200m fly; silver in 50m and 200m free; bronze in 800m free relay) participated in the 2012 Olympic Trials and tied for 28th in the 100m fly.
