Looking at the SwimSwam preview, Marina is picked 8th in the 100 Breast. Her predicted LCM time (1:06,81) converts to a SCY time of 58.38. That's a full SECOND faster than Baker's or Lilly King's best times. Would have been 2nd at 2015 NCAAs. Strangely enough, Marina scored in the 200 Breast at NCAAs, but isn't predicted to make finals at Worlds.

If Marina could get to 59 mid with a relay start, Baker could swim the back legs on both medley relays and both backs (although she'd generate more points in the 100 Free than the 200 Back). Wouldn't make Adams or Small must gets (still prefer one) so Teri could focus more on Drabot and Mann.

Looking at Alyssa Marsh's times, her best bet is the 100 Fly, borderline NCAA qualifier right now, and Teri might be able to make her an NCAA scorer at some point. Still aways from qualifying or scoring in the 50 Free.

Yeah LCM prowess doesn't always translate to SCY dominance, even in breast where dolphin kicks are less of a factor (well at least legally!). That's an interesting observation 'bout the quirkiness of Marina's ranking between the 200 & 100 distance in long vs short course too. Do keep my hopes high that MG will eventually come into her own in the little pool once she has adapted more completely to SCY and the challenge of the classroom here!

United States Seeking To Affirm Its Status As The World's Premier Aquatic Superpower

July 31, 2015 - John Lohn

"You lose the momentum of a trials format," said United States men's coach Dave Durden of the yearlong wait for Worlds. "This has been 12 months in the making. We're dead in the water when it comes to (a lack of trials), so we're going to have to generate some momentum to be ready for Kazan and to perform as a group I think you look to guys like Nathan (Adrian) and Ryan (Lochte) to generate (the momentum) within the team. They've been there, so you rely on the guys with experience to get the team jelled together, moving forward and get the best performance as a group out of those eight days."

(L-R) Chelsea Chenault, Missy Franklin and Jessica Hardy of the United States in Kazan and set for action - by Patrick B. Kraemer

Early on in the meet, as the team seeks to surge, Franklin and Ledecky are the likeliest athletes to provide a spark in the water. While Franklin will race the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke, Ledecky will be chasing her second straight distance triple, and will add the 200 free to the program this time around.

Franklin and Ledecky, along with several other members of Team USA, met with the media in Kazan on Friday and an impending duel between the teammates became a topic of discussion. Of course, that 200 freestyle showdown will not be a two-lady affair, plenty of international flavor also dotting what might be the most-anticipated event on the women's program.

For her part, Franklin is keenly aware of the 200 freestyle's depth, and acknowledged the presence of her countrywoman as someone who elevates her performances and drives her to improve. At the same time, she took an analytical eye to the World Champs, seeing them for what they are in the grand scheme of this quadrennial.

"I have a blast every single time I race Katie," Franklin said. "She makes me a better athlete. The whole field is going to be wanting that (gold medal) and giving their heart in that raceThis meet is such a good indicator of things that you need to work on, especially for next year for the Olympic Trials. I'm excited to race to see where I am and where my competitors are."

Jessica Hardy (R) and Missy Franklin of the United States of America in Kazan by Patrick B. Kraemer

Two years ago, the United States women swept the relays in Barcelona, Missy Franklin fueling each unit to victory. This time around, a sweep doesn't look attainable, what with Australia absolutely stacked in the 400 freestyle relay, paced by the Sisters of Speed, Cate Campbell and Bronte Campbell.

Still, Team USA looks good on the female side, the 800 free relay a formidable squad behind Franklin and Katie Ledecky, and a solid group in the 400 medley relay. The question with the medley relay will come down to whether the United States can get a strong butterfly leg, which is the weak point on paper, to go with the pop brought by Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Simone Manuel.

Step Forward: Breakout Opportunities Await Katie McLaughlin and Kathleen Baker

It's basically tradition for the United States to introduce big-time youthful talent to the world at major showcase events. Think about Missy Franklin at the 2011 World Championships, where she claimed gold in the 200 backstroke, and Katie Ledecky at the 2012 Olympic Games, where she blitzed the field in the 800 freestyle. In Kazan, the duo of Katie McLaughlin and Kathleen Baker has the chance to etch themselves as worldwide factors.

The 18-year-old McLaughlin, a Cal-Berkeley recruit, heads into the World Champs ranked 11th in the world at 2:07.93, that time coming from the Fran Crippen Meet of Champions in June. With rest and a Team USA training camp under her belt, McLaughlin has the potential to carve some ticks off her personal best and advance to the championship final.

In the case of Baker, a student of David Marsh at SwimMac Carolina, she'll join Franklin as the American entries in the 100 backstroke. Ranked ninth in the world at 59.86, Baker's event appears more daunting than McLaughlin's as it is deeper and top-heavy in superstars, but a performance in the 59-mid range would go a long way in establishing Baker for a push toward Rio de Janeiro.

Sorry don't have Comcast at my end to help out...

One serious gripe which I have with the NBC monopoly on domestic broadcasts of Olympic sports events is their relegation of some pretty major bi-annual & quadrennial competitions to Universal Sports Network, which sadly isn't currently available on a substantial number of cable providers. Oh, and that it's often a time-delayed, edited & condensed version (esp when aired on NBC), with prelim heats being very rarely covered.

If you ultimately find it nigh to impossible to catch Worlds, even when you're perfectly happy to pay a subscription fee for the sports package, I'd (unofficially and off the record :p) suggest that a "last resort" option may be to try to catch the BBC or Eurosport coverage.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/swimming/
http://tv.eurosport.com/diving/fina-diving-and-swimming-world-championship-2015-live-on-eurosport_sto4827718/story.shtml

Former is free, but due to the licencing fee most of the streaming content's restricted to viewers in the UK. Eurosport also charges a nominal fee, with a very reasonably priced monthly package. Both sites do employ geographical location restriction protocols, but these are fairly easily bypassed thru the use of VPNs etc. Won't encourage you any further to be naughty lol, but google's definitely your friend if you want to explore these options in greater depth

And now back to the thread topic on hand...

Sunday's finals:

Katie Ledecky is expected to easily snag gold in the 400m Free, and we can all cheer on Cierra & alumna Lauren Boyle (NZL) to get on the podium! Would be a major accomplishment for Cierra actually if she can swim fast enough to qualify for evening finals. Lauren's medal chances OTOH are pretty positive though she will be facing stiff competition.

As for the Women's 4x100m Free relay, all indications point to Team USA facing a veritable uphill battle versus a very strong Dutch sprint team for the silver. Aussies are indeed very heavily favoured to win it all, and it would be one of the biggest upsets at this Worlds if their dominant squad were to come out other than as top dogs here (though the American women pulled it off @ Barcelona 2 years ago in AR fashion, thanks to Romano's amazing anchor with Natalie's key contribution when she was selected over Simone!). Abbey will be tested in the morning heats to see if she will earn bragging rights to represent the US of A in finals, alongside Missy & Simone.

Hopefully Anthony will be joining Nathan for the Men's relay - they will face even greater odds than their female counterparts in getting on the medal stand btw.

There will also be semifinal sessions in the evening for the Women's 100m Fly, which current :bear:s Farida (EGY) & Noemie (CAN) will aspire to qualify for from the morning heats. Sadly tho, USA's fastest swimmer in this event for 2015 to-date, baby :bear: Katie McLaughlin, won't get an opportunity to slug it out with the world's best in the 100 distance, since this 2015 Worlds team was selected from performances a year ago...

Definitely a mixed bag thus far with Team USA's rocky start in the competition pool (notable exception being Ledecky's 400m Free gold + her WR in the 1500m prelims this morning) that has most American swim fans all up in an outraged uproar/tizzy over how many of their faves have faltered, with quite a few not making finals or even semis!

What's making me really all worked up though are the gratuitous attacks on our coaching staff & swim programme from a handful of armchair critics hiding behind the anonymity of the internet...what hurts even more are that many of these comments are attracting a greater number of upvotes than downvotes...

Prime example here :headbang

JoeSwam: "Cal coach Teri McKeever's training methods cause unfortunate changes to swimmers' bodies. Heard that there was not a proper strength training coach and the swimmers were forced to do the wrong type of weight training which built the wrong type of muscle. Teri is know to be harsh, denigrating, and verbally abusive to the her swimmers and use psychological games which frustrate the swimmers and results in big time NEGATIVITY. Also, as reported in SwimSwam, Teri just made her unofficial assistant coach the OFFICIAL assistant coach. This duo will talk a good game but be verbally abusive to the swimmers. This type of college training may result in team wins at Pac12 and NCAA, but individual swimmers suffer. Missy injured her back under Teri at Cal Liz Pelton broke her hand in practice at Cal and required surgery. Cierra Runge flew the coop. Swimmers get slower at Cal under Teri. It is all very interesting. Go Bears! Go USA!"

On a brighter note, Kathleen got into the 100m back semis after Katinka Hosszu had scratched, and made the most of the opportunity by busting out a PB of 59.63 to qualify for tomorrow's finals alongside Missy - well done there to our baby :bear:!! :bravo

Also keeping my fingers crossed that KM will get a well-earned chance to compete for a finals spot in the morning heats of the 4x100m Medley Relay, since Katie currently enjoys a significantly faster unrested 100m fly time than the full-blown tapers of either of the 2 squad members officially representing the country in this event (one who didn't make finals and the other having failed to advance to semis). Perhaps our 3 incoming Bears (Katie, Kathleen & Abbey) will in addition get selected to the mixed relays or even the 50m back/fly events with a spot of luck...

Kudos also to Noemie for racing alongside the world's best in the 100m fly finals (no Americans made that final as mentioned earlier), and to alumna Lauren for her qualifying for the 1500m finals tomorrow!

Decent rule thumb is to avoid reading any SwimSwam comments on Missy or Teri. There's sone segment that is never going to cut Cal, Missy, or Teri any slack. The sad thing is that if Cal were a mediocre school academically, Middy were simply an All-American swimmer, or Teri had never won an NCAA title, none would take any crap. Bears clean up in recruiting every year and win another title every other year and generate a great deal of irrational hate. Missy was more demonstrative when she broke the NCAA record in the 200 Free than when she won Olympic gold. If any of the allegations were true, Teri could never recruit at her current level. Vollmer wouldn't return after having a child and Leverenz would have bolted. Love Natalie and Durden, but she hasn't won jack without Teri.

Couple of other Cal tidbits:

-Michele Tafoya did the commentary yesterday. Her sister Meg was friends with Peter Rocca's sister while both were at Cal, Michele's a Bear too, but she mispronounced Dave's name as "Darden".

-Marina was around 20th in the 100 Breast. Her converted time was 59 mid. My girl Finn Jenna's converted time was 59 low.

-Another Euro, Alexandra Wenk, set a German record. She swam in Noemie's heat yesterday and her converted time would have been second in the 100 Fly in the most recent NCAAs. The winner was a new NCAA record. Wenk was rumored to be interested in Cal two years ago and would have been in the same recruiting class with Noemie and Mau,

I was pleasantly surprise about Baker. I saw in the prelim she was in 17th place and just out of the semi. I later wanted to check out after the semi's where Missy placed. When I saw KB making the finals, I was totally blown away.

But the low for me is the USA's men not making the finals in the 4x100 relay. This can't look good on Dave's resume..

Another of the Tafoya sisters' Cal pals is the mom of Olympic water polo stars Jessica and Maggie Steffens. Their dad Carlos was an All-American water polo player player on one of the early Cal NCAA championship teams. Despite double digit relatives who played for the Bears, Jessica and Maggie played polo on the farm.

Ledecky Rides Momentum through 200m Free

In the women's 200m free, Ledecky was in fourth place at the 100-meter mark, but maintained contact with the tight pack. She made her move in the third length and was second at the final turn. From there, she hammered her competitors down the homestretch, touching in 1:55.16. Italy's Federica Pellegrini was second in 1:55.32, which Franklin was third in 1:55.49.

Franklin's bronze is her second of the meet after finishing third as a part of the Americans' 400 free relay team on Sunday. She finished fifth in the 100m backstroke yesterday, but wasn't discouraged.

"Based on my results from this meet, I know my times have not been where I want them to be, but come next year, it's not going to matter," Franklin said. "I'm going to do what I will do this next year, and be where I want to be come (Olympic) Trials.

"I felt really good going into the 100 backstroke yesterday. My speed just wasn't there, so you get out, you do your best and you've got to move on from that. My 200s are feeling really, really good, so I'm really hoping that translates over to my 200 backstroke, and we'll see what happens in my 100 free tomorrow. It should be really tough and really fun as well, but one thing at a time."

Semifinals

American swimmers competing in semifinals Wednesday included: Nathan Adrian, who was fifth in the men's 100m free in 48.36; McLaughlin, who was fifth in the women's 200m butterfly in 2:07.52; Cammile Adams, who was sixth in the women's 200m butterfly in 2:07.57; and Ryan Lochte, who was first in the 200m IM in 1:56.81.

Special mention goes to Conor Dwyer, who won a swim-off against Great Britain's Roberto Pavoni for eighth place in the men's 200m IM with time of 1:58.18.

Dwyer and everyone else who placed in the top 8 will advance to tomorrow night's finals.

Katie McLaughlin Ready For "Exciting" 200 Fly Final (SW Radio)

Though she had a strong swim in the semifinals of the 200 butterfly at the FINA world championships, American Katie McLaughlin knows she made some crucial errors that she aims to fix for tonight's final.

"The problem with my race was I was not doing my own race," she said. "I was telling myself to back off a little bit at the beginning because I was too fast this morning. I think it's important for me to stay in my own lane and be out how I usually am than try to hold back a little bit."

Listen To Interview On Swimming World (AUDIO): http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Katie-McLaughlin-200-fly-400-mixed-medley-relay.mp3

McLaughlin gives props to teammate Cammile Adams, who McLaughlin said "I couldn't do it without her." Adams will be one of McLaughlin's seven rivals once the race starts, and McLaughlin said the times on the scoreboard for the medalists could be wide-ranging, which she says makes the thought of swimming in the race "exciting" and "nerve-wracking."

"Everyone's been so close (in time range)," she said. "It could be anything from a (2:05) to a (2:07). I have no clue."

McLaughlin was the only swimmer in the 200 fly semifinals to compete in the mixed medley relay final the same night. Not only was she swimming in her first mixed relay, but she was also making a major transition from the 200 fly to the 100 fly for her relay duty.

"Being in the ready room with my teammates definitely gets you pumped up and makes you feel like you can do something," she said. "If I were in there by myself after a (200) fly I would have (said), 'Oh, God, what's going to come?'"

For McLaughlin, the relay was her second event of the night, following the 200 butterfly. In her individual event, McLaughlin led the field for 150 meters before dropping off the pace and finishing sixth. When it came time to join her teammates, there was no sign of disappointment, just a youngster ready to go.

“Her (McLaughlin) last 50 was great,” Ledecky said. “I saw her turn at the 150 about two and a half seconds behind and I got a little nervous, but then I felt like I dived in right with the girl next to me and I knew then I could bring it home and get this thing done. Shout out to (McLaughlin). She has had an incredible week. She came off a tough 200 butterfly and was able to get up there and race and she brought her attitude and we were able to get the job done.”

So good to see all the Baby Bears swimming well, but my fear of Katie deferring is getting bigger and bigger. She has the most upside for a medal in the Olympics in my opinion. To be chosen for the 4 x 200 relay team is huge! Also, she looked great for 150 meters in the 200 Fly, but just died at the end for going out too fast.

Is Abbey swimming any individual events, or just relays. I'm actually thinking she should not have deferred, because of the people she would have to jump over to make the team. Simone, Missy, Ivy Martin, Margo Geer, Lia Neal, etc. I think her best hope is to finish top six for the 4 x 100 relay team.

Kathleen grew up a lot by taking advantage of the second chance she got in the 100 Back. Her road to making the Olympic team is also very difficult though, with Missy, Elizabeth Beisel, Boots, and Liz all vying for two spots.

Guess we'll have to keep our fingers crossed as we await KM's decision with baited breath! It was sounding like Katie had pretty much decided on starting this coming semester in spite of a rumour to the contrary circulating on one of the furd boards, but you never know... Anyone aware of a hard deadline on announcing one's intention to defer??

I had really been hoping that the coaches would make a gutsy move and put Katie on that relay in finals, after a rather rough prelims from Cierra (1:58.65), Chenault (1:58.04) & Vreeland (1:58.40). By tradition, Leah (1:57.52) & Chenault would have normally earned the privilege of joining Missy & Ledecky in finals as they had the 2 fastest times from the morning heats. But kudos to Teri/Salo/Meehan/Marsh & co. for recognising that Katie was the hot hand, and having faith in her ability to handle the enormous pressure in spite of just coming off a massively energy-sapping 200 Fly final in the same evening session! Guess her unrested 1:57.55 from the SMOC meet in late June may have also factored into their decision, since that time's faster than anyone else's on the squad this year, other than Missy & KL... Naturally our baby :bear: delivered with flying colours, 1:56.92!

Props to Katie actually for challenging the field at the get-go in that 200 Fly final btw, it takes an awful degree of confidence and guts to do just that. Though KM did inevitably fade somewhat from the blistering pace that she had set, that 2:06.95 was still a PB which would have placed 7th in the finals @ London 2012 (behind Jemma Lowe's 2:06.80 but ahead of Jakabos' 2:07.33).

btw I'd expect the coaches to now move our "#1 100 flyer" Kendyl Stewart (58.06 prelims, 58.14 semis, didn't make it to finals in the individual, relay split of 57.78 in the mixed medley prelims) to the Women's 4x100 Medley prelims, go with Katie in finals (mixed relay split of 57.56 after having raced the 200 fly semis), and leave our "#2 100 flyer" Claire Donahue off this relay (58.77 prelims, didn't make it to semis of the 100 fly individual). In truth, the fastest American flyer right now is probably Kelsi Worrell, followed by Katie - but unfortunately this Worlds team was pre-selected from 2014 performances.

Just relay(s) here.

Abbey had put up a solid but not eye-popping 53.85 during prelims of the Women's 4x100m Free on Day 1, but sadly furdette Lia Neal was favoured over Abbey for finals in spite of Lia having cranked out a slightly slower 53.93 split from prelims. There's a chance that Abbey may be considered for the Mixed 4x100m Free relay on Sat (prelims), and a pretty remote one of making it to the medley relay prelims squad on Sunday.

If neither opportunity materialises, then Abbey's 2015 Worlds involvement (in the pool) is effectively over, but we'll see her back in action soon afterwards at the Moscow & Paris World Cup stops following Kazan.

Kathleen grew up a lot by taking advantage of the second chance she got in the 100 Back. Her road to making the Olympic team is also very difficult though, with Missy, Elizabeth Beisel, Boots, and Liz all vying for two spots.

Have to agree about Kathleen. She'll also have to go thru Natalie, who incidentally holds the fastest 100m back time for an American woman this year (from her Pam Ams outing), besting an off-form Missy and up & coming Kathleen in terms of the clock...

Not worried about KM deferring. Vollmer. Farida, Boots, Noemie, Mau, Naze in the fly and Viollmer. Cierra, Pelton, Baker, Acker in the 200 Free are unbelievable training groups. Teri will have to mix in a lot of LCM sets.

KAZAN, Russia The medal haul for Cal swimmers at the FINA World Championships moved into double digits with Golden Bears collecting six medals Saturday. With one day of racing remaining, Cal's total now stands at 15 with six gold, six silver and three bronze.

On the Bears' most productive day of the meet, Nathan Adrian, Missy Franklin and Abbey Weitzeil earned gold in the mixed 4x100-meter relay, which set a world record in the final with a time of 3:23.05. Silver medals went to Adrian in the men's 50 free, Franklin in the women's 200 backstroke and Lauren Boyle in the women's 800 free.

In the relay, Adrian handled the second leg and brought the Americans up from fifth place to second with a split of 47.29, nearly a half-second faster than anyone else in the final. When Franklin entered the water for the anchor leg, the U.S. was still in second place. She covered her 100-meter distance in 53.31, passing the Russians, who were in front but ended in fourth, and holding off the Netherlands for the gold by 0.05 seconds. Weitzeil, a Cal signee, also picked up a gold medal for her role in the qualifying heats when she swam anchor for the U.S. team.

"It was really fun," Adrian said. "We didn't have a great vantage point, so I had to keep looking up at the board. Missy did not have the lead until the last meter of that race, so it was really exciting."

Before the 3rd leg, USofA was well ahead of the Netherlands: 1:36:08 vs 1:37:83
Simone Manuel (Leland Junior-univ.) then lost a lot of ground to NED's Kromowidjojo (what a great name!): 53.66 vs 52.48

When Missy entered the water, USofA was ahead of NED by just over 1/2 second: 2:29:74 vs 2:30:31.
In the first 50 meters, Missy lost the lead to NED's Heemskerk: 25:61 vs 24.71

With 50 meters to go, Missy was behind by 0.33s: 2:55:35 vs 2:55:02
Looking at the video of the race above, Missy was half a body behind with 25 meters to go, so Heemskerk actually increased her lead in the next-to-last 25 meters!
Missy was still clearly behind with 5 meters to go but somehow pulled it off in the end. A phelpsian finish.
In the last 50 meters (more like the last 25 meters), Missy outswims Heemskerk by 0.38s: 27.70 vs 28.08

Wooden Shoes: 3:23:10 (would've been a world record)

Ha that's the gutsy Missy we all love who doesn't give up and always gives her all right up to the very end! The heart of a true Champion! Well been a bit of a mixed Championships for Missy, to be frank a bit disappointing in some areas by her stratospheric standards...but wish her all the best, and cheering her on to bouncing back in a big way for Rio!

Femke's actually amazingly talented and has the ability to be a serious gold contender in the 200 free (1.54.68 this year which is faster than Ledecky's winning time in Kazan), and podium candidate in the 100 free (#2 world ranked time of 52.69, had a 51.99 anchor split in the 4x100 free relay that was surpassed only by Bronte's 51.77). Her Achilles' Heel though being a history of not producing her personal bests on the biggest stage in finals, when it counts the most - don't know if it's nerves, poor pacing or what?

Femke had some nice things to say about Cal when she competed at the Santa Clara Pro Arena series back in June:

Femke: Santa Clara! ☀️
Sara: Aww!!! Was there last year say hi to my Cal (my swim team) friends! Hehe @femheemskerk
Femke: @sara3ice thank u sweetheart. The girls from Cal say hi and do miss u alot! Also spoken to Teri . In fact, we ALL miss you. Big hug! ❤️
Femke: @sara3ice I understand why you'd love swimming here and for Cal. They're all so kind! ❤️
Sara: Hehehe yeah such sweethearts! and great energy..really motivating and fun! I'd never switch it, even for 30 gold olympic medals hehe
