This award is given to the athlete whose performance(s) stand out in relation to other years, with special emphasis given to the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.

Katie McLaughlin - After excelling on the junior scene in recent years, Katie McLaughlin made the most of her first senior-level international competition this summer at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. In Australia, the 17-year-old won bronze in the 200m fly in 2:07.08 and also added the seventh-fastest swim in the 100m fly in the prelims. At the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships, McLaughlin earned a spot on the Pan Pacs roster with a runner-up finish in the 200m fly and also placed fourth in the 100m fly.

Ryan Murphy - The youngest member of the Team USA men's roster at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, 19-year-old Ryan Murphy continued his rise among the U.S. backstroke ranks with a bronze medal in the 100m back in 53.27 and a fourth-place finish in the 200m back at Pan Pacs. To punch his ticket to Australia, Murphy was second in the 100m and 200m back at Phillips 66 Nationals behind Olympic gold medalists Matt Grevers and Tyler Clary, respectively. Earlier in the year, Murphy notched an impressive debut at the NCAA Championships where he won the 100y and 200y back national titles for Cal.

Cierra Runge - After winning four relay medals at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships, 18-year-old Cierra Runge made the jump to senior-level standout this season. In addition to a silver-medal performance in the 400m free at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships in 4:04.55, she also added top-five finishes in the 800m free and 1500m free in Australia. At the 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships, Runge earned runner-up finishes to world record-holder Katie Ledecky in the 400m and 800m free to earn her spot on the Pan Pacs roster, her first for a major international meet.

Perseverance Award
This award is given to the athlete who came back from adversity, retirement, sickness, injury, etc., to have an outstanding performance(s) in 2013, with special emphasis on the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.

Missy Franklin - Accustomed to immense success at the international level, Olympic gold medalist and world record-holder Missy Franklin was thrown a curve ball on the eve of the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships when she suffered a bout of back spasms just two days before the start of the meet. With the support of the Team USA medical staff, Franklin courageously swam her full program at Pan Pacs, including a tough 200m free and 100m back double on the opening day of competition. Despite being less than 100 percent, Franklin claimed four medals in Australia gold in the 4x200m free relay, silver in the 4x100m medley and free relays and bronze in the 100m back. In the process, she won the admiration of her teammates and the swimming community with the toughness she displayed.

Tom Shields - After narrowly missing out on qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games and 2013 FINA World Championships, Tom Shields made the leap to a primetime long-course performer in 2014. Late in 2013, he put himself in position to succeed this summer by excelling at a number of short-course FINA World Cup events around the globe, winning seven medals and setting short-course American records in both butterfly events. At this year's Phillips 66 National Championships, the hard work paid off. Shields won his first career national titles, topping the podium in the 100m and 200m fly, and punching his ticket to Australia in the process.

Dave Durden - Dave Durden and his California Aquatics staff enjoyed a banner year in 2014, placing six men on the Team USA roster for the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. In Australia, Durden-coached swimmers combined to win seven medals. Nathan Adrian claimed silver in the 100m free, bronze in the 50m free, gold in the 4x100m medley relay and silver in the 4x100m free relay. Anthony Ervin won silver in the 50m free and 4x100m free relay, and Ryan Murphy broke through on the international stage with bronze in the 100m back. Prior to Pan Pacs at Phillips 66 Nationals, Durden led Tom Shields to a sweep of the national titles in the 100m and 200m butterfly events. In addition, his Cal Bears won the NCAA Championships team title in March.

This award is given to the best team relay performance, male or female. The performance considered must be a finals performance, with special emphasis on the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships.

Women's 4x200m Free Relay, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships - In just her second career international relay, Katie Ledecky anchored the Americans to gold in the 4x200m free relay at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. Shannon Vreeland (1:57.89), Missy Franklin (1:56.12) and Leah Smith (1:58.03) kept Team USA within striking distance of the host Australians, and Ledecky entered the pool for the anchor leg just 1.2 seconds off the pace. She quickly made up the difference over the first 100 meters, and continued to pull away from Australia's Melanie Schlanger over the final 100 to give Team USA the win in 7:46.40, good for a meet record. Ledecky's 1:54.36 split was more than a second faster than any other swimmer in the event.

Men's 4x100m Medley Relay, 2014 Pan Pacific Championships - The men's 4x100m medley relay of Matt Grevers, Kevin Cordes, Michael Phelps and Nathan Adrian won gold at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships with a meet-record time of 3:29.94, which was more than two seconds clear of runner-up Japan. After Grevers (53.10) led things off, Cordes (58.64) put Team USA in front for good on the breaststroke leg. Phelps pushed the lead to nearly two seconds with a 50.60 butterfly split, and Adrian closed it out with a 47.60 split on the freestyle anchor.

Missy Franklin - Missy Franklin may not have claimed as many gold medals as she is accustomed to on the international stage in 2014, but she won the admiration of her teammates and the swimming community with the toughness she displayed at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. Despite suffering a bout of back spasms two days before the start of competition, Franklin swam a full program in Australia and walked away with four medals gold in the 4x200m free relay, silver in the 4x100m medley and free relays and bronze in the 100m back. Earlier in August at the Phillips 66 National Championships, Franklin repeated as national champion in the 100m free, 100m back and 200m back and was second in the 200m free. In her NCAA Championships debut, Franklin recorded a trio of top-three finishes, including a win and American record in the 200y free.

Another bonus of adding Amy is that it builds a bridge to the next generation of US national swimmers. Kathleen, Katie, and that chick who foolishly went to the farm bonded as teammates on the junior national team. Kathleen and Katie were on the senior national team while Amy was on the junior national team this Summer. Other than Beccca Mann, the next generation of US stars were Amy's teammates: Katie Drabot, Stanzi Mosely, Allie Szekely, Sierra Schmidt, and Madison Homovich. Might as well get them into the pipeline now.

Today was our second full day in Tokyo. I think everyone had problems adjusting to the time the second night. I was up at 4 a.m. and couldn't fall back asleep. We first went to breakfast, and the food is pretty good! All the Americans flock to the tater tots. We also had a group morning practice, where we could split up and do our own thing. All the backstrokers are trying the new wedge. It has five different settings and the wedge really makes a difference! Then we came back to the hotel and a group went to the Ferris wheel and the other people just stayed and talked at lunch for a couple hours. After that we all went to rest before we went to swim again in the afternoon. At practice at night we split into groups with some of the National Team mentors. Caitlin Leverenz was my group mentor and she came up with our workout and we had a lot of fun! It's awesome to have so many people here to help us. All of the girls have been taking a bunch of pictures. I'm pretty sure we take pictures every time we go to the pool. Also two of the boys have GoPros and we have been using them a lot and getting awesome pictures underwater. Lastly we had dinner and a team meeting to end out our day. Groups of us hung out in the hall or in our rooms before we went to bed. Everyone was asleep pretty early because tomorrow we race! I am so grateful for the opportunity to be here and thankful for support back home!

October 26: Ella Eastin

It's been two days for Team USA, and we finally arrived and are settled in Tokyo!!! After more than 12 hours of flying, we got to Japan and went through customs at the airport and had an hour bus ride back to the APA hotel Tokyo. When we got to the hotel, it was around 6 p.m. Tokyo time and we were EXHAUSTED. Everyone went to bed super early. Kathleen Baker and I fell asleep at 7:30 p.m. and didn't wake up until 7:30 the next morning! We thought getting adjusted wasn't too difficult and were glad not to be too jet lagged. When we woke up on Sunday morning we had our first breakfast together with some of the other countries at the meet. We headed to the pool and the team got to see the venue for the first time (for those who did not come on the trip last year). It was awesome and got everyone immediately got excited for the meet to start. After a light practice, we had some team time at the hotel following lunch. We walked around the area outside the hotel and went to some little market shops, and even found a park with boys playing catch. We talked to them and even took some pictures. They looked really excited to be able to interact with a bunch of Americans. After hanging out and resting in the hotel, we got ready to go back to the pool again. Everyone is excited that a lot of the National Team members are traveling with us so we can get to know them and learn from all their expertise. After our second practices and dinner, the girls and guys got ready to experience the Japanese cultural tradition of relaxing/washing in the bathhouse. With a spa and many other amenities it was a great relaxing way to wrap up our day. It has been a lot of fun getting closer to our teammates and experiencing a different culture these past two days and we are all getting very excited to compete.

Thanks so much to my family and home club SoCal Aquatics for helping me get to this point. The experiences I have here are invaluable and I am so grateful for this opportunity.

Go USA!!!!! Ella

Women's 200 Free Finals

While many of the times slipped from Tokyo, the young American junior squad at this meet, relatively fresh in competition, remained strong. In between McKeon and Hosszu here was Katie Drabot in a new lifetime best of 1:54.23 (2nd). That jumped her ahead of Shannon Vreeland on the all-time list of Americans into 8th place. Her next target would be Lindsay Mintenko, who held the American Record in the event from 1987 all the way until 2010. Drabot will get that shot at the World Short Course Championships, where last week she learned that she would earn an individual swim in the 200 free. Two other American juniors in this final finished 7th (Erin Voss - 2:00.76) and 8th (Erin Earley 2:04.06).

Women's 100 Fly FINALS

Felicia Lee (3rd) was one of four Americans in this final. Kathleen Baker was 5th in 58.58, Cassidy Bayer was 6th in 58.85, and Hannah Kukurugya was 8th in 1:00.05.

Women's 200 Backstroke FINALS

Team USA had 5 of the 8 finalists in the race, including the other two medalists. Kathleen Baker took 2nd in 2:04.25, and Elizabeth Beisel was 3rd in 2:05.00.
Erin Voss had a very good swim with a 2:05.25 for 4th, followed by Canada's Hilary Caldwell (2:05.58) for 5th. The times began to wane after that, but the A-final finished out with Allie Szekely (2:06.30), Lizzie Simmonds (2:07.53), and Erin Earley (2:09.80).

Mixed 200 Medley Relay

The Russian relay of Sergei Fesikov, Maria Astashkina, Aleksandr Krasnykh, and Elizaveta Bazarova combined for a 1:43.26. USA's Corey Okubo (26.08), Lilly King (30.82), Alex Valente (23.98) and Katie Drabot (25.15) took second in 1:46.03.

Definitely budding studs from the next gen to keep an eye out on, I really like your comprehensive list! Sierra's on-the-blocks dancing routine would sure add some color & fun to future meets heh.

Not that conversant with their short course metrics, but I'd also consider the likes of Meghan Small, Cassidy Bayer, Courtney Harnish & Isabella Rongione who all appear to have considerable potential. Not to neglect Emily Eastin, Courtney Mykkanen, and Alyssa Marsh either as had been brought up by BearDevil - esp if we want to pile on some serious backstroking depth

USA Swimming Names 2015 Rosters for Three Major International Competitions
10/30/2014

USA Swimming today announced Olympian-laden United States rosters for a trio of major international competitions in 2015 – the FINA World Championships, Pan American Games and World University Games.

“The momentum generated in 2015 will be key for USA Swimming as we build toward the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio,” said USA Swimming National Team Director Frank Busch. “We’ve assembled three exciting teams for next summer, and I look forward to seeing how we stack up on the international stage.”

Team USA will send a 47-member squad to the pool competition at the 2015 FINA World Championships, set for Aug. 2-9, 2015, in Kazan, Russia. Among the group are 20 Olympians, including 14 gold medalists.

Leading the way for the U.S. will be Olympic gold medalists and world record-holders Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.) and Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md.), who were the stars of the 2013 FINA World Championships. In Barcelona, Franklin won a record six gold medals, and Ledecky added four gold medals and set her first two world records.

Headlining the American men in Kazan will be Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who has amassed 23 career FINA World Championships medals and paced the U.S. men at 2013 Worlds with three gold medals. Other individual Olympic gold medalists on the Team USA roster include Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.), Anthony Ervin (Valencia, Calif.) and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.).

Also named were the 36 pool athletes nominated to represent the U.S. at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto from July 14-18, 2015. Pending approval by the United States Olympic Committee, the roster includes a star-studded group featuring more than 20 National Team members, 10 Olympians and six Olympic gold medalists. A complete 2015 Pan American Games roster is available online.

Highlighting the group is Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.), a three-time Olympian and 12-time Olympic medalist. She will be joined in Toronto by fellow U.S. Olympic gold medalists Cullen Jones (Irvington, N.J.), Matt McLean (Sterling, Va.), Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich.) and Nick Thoman (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Headlining the 46 swimmers named to Team USA for the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, will be 2012 Olympians Rachel Bootsma (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Lia Neal (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Shannon Vreeland (Overland Park, Kan.). They lead a contingent of 30 USA Swimming National Team members. A complete 2015 World University Games roster is available online.

Featuring swimmers ages 17-23 who are current college students or recent graduates, the World University Games has been a springboard to international success for numerous swimmers, including Clary, Grevers, Jones and fellow Olympic gold medalists Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer. The 2015 World University Games swimming competition is slated for July 4-11, 2015.

Complete selection procedures for each team are outlined at usaswimming.org. The open water swimmers slated to compete at each competition will be named in 2015

2012 U.S. Olympian Rachel Bootsma will represent her country in Gwangju, South Korea in July, 2015 at the World University Games.

USA Swimming has announced its 2015 World University Games team of 47, highlighted by 2012 Olympians Rachel Bootsma (Cal), Lia Neal (Stanford), and Shannon Vreeland (Georgia). Also on the team for the men is a loaded lineup that includes Jack Conger (Texas), Matt Ellis (Texas), Matthew Josa (D2 – Queens), Caeleb Dressel (Florida), Jacob Pebley and Josh Prenot (Cal), and Andrew Seliskar. There are four Texas Longhorns and four current or future Cal Bears on the men’s team alone: representing the top two teams at last year’s NCAA Championship meet.

The World University Games will take place next summer in Gwangju, Korea from July 4-11. Athletes must be enrolled in a recognized degree program to be eligible for the team. Seniors who graduate this spring are also eligible, and there’s no requirement for athletes to be affiliated with the NCAA to participate.

Athletes qualified based off of their finishes at last summer’s U.S. Nationals. Swimmers on the U.S. team for the World Championships in Kazan are ineligible for this team (except for relay-only swimmers and non-Olympic event-only swimmers), so the World University Games team gives the next tier of swimmers a chance to compete internationally.

Team USA finished second in the medal table at the last World University Games in 2013, as host Russia crushed the field with 17 golds. Americans brought home 6 golds and 24 total medals.

USA Swimming Team for Pan American Games announced

http://swimswam.com/usa-swimming-team-for-pan-american-games-announced/

USA Swimming has named its official Pan American Games team for next summer’s meet, and it will be led by American veterans and Olympic medalists Natalie Coughlin, Allison Schmitt, and Cullen Jones.

While a subordinate meet to the World Championships team, this is still a very important meet in the pre-Olympic year as it’s an opportunity for young hopefuls to get their first big taste of senior international competition, and it’s also a chance for veterans who came up short of the World Championship team to have a focus and test meet prior to the final dash to Rio.

In addition to the three mentioned above, some of the better-known names on the team will include Andrew Gemmell, Jimmy Feigen, Nick Thoman, Darian Townsend, Olivia Smoliga, Amanda Weir, Caitlin Leverenz, Madison Kennedy, and Katie Meili.

In total, this roster almost rivals that of the 2015 World Championship team in terms of name recognition and experience, which shows just how deep and difficult it’s become to make a U.S. international team.

Pan Ams begin on June 11th in Toronto, Canada. Athletes earned their spots on this team based on finishes from last summer’s U.S. Nationals. Swimmers on the World Champs or World University Games teams are not eligible for this squad, giving USA Swimming a chance to send three different national teams to major meets next summer.

At the last Pan American Games in 2011, the U.S. brought home 18 golds and 46 total medals, both the highest totals of any squad. Those Games were held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

http://swimswam.com/interactive-graphs-cal-pac-12-claim-majority-u-s-s-world-university-games-team/

Seth Stubblefield is one of 9 Cal Bears on the U.S. roster. Check out our interactive breakdowns here. Archive Photo via Tim Binning/TheSwimPictures.com

Earlier today, USA Swimming announced its representatives for next summer's World University Games in Gwangju, Korea. We took the opportunity to analyze the roster, breaking it up by individual schools and putting together some cool visual looks at the breakdown.

The California Golden Bears were the runaway leaders in placing swimmers on the World University Games team, with 9 representatives heading to South Korea next summer. That includes four women and five men. We've got the full breakdowns below, but if you're more of a text-oriented type, here are the team leaders:

Cal 9 (4 women, 5 men)
Texas 5 (1 woman, 4 men)
Stanford 4 (3 women, 1 man)
Georgia 4 (3 women, 1 man)

The combined dominance of Cal and Stanford meant that the Pac-12 conference also led the way in terms of overall selections with 17. That's nearly double the next-highest conferences, the Big Ten and SEC (both of which had 9 swimmers on the squad).

These numbers do include swimmers of varying NCAA statuses. Incoming freshmen as of next summer's meet are eligible to compete, and we included them with the program to which they've given a verbal commitment. Only one World University Games athlete is yet uncommitted, and that's California sprint freestyler Abbey Weitzeil.

There are several college graduates on the roster as well swimmers who graduated last spring were eligible to make the team this summer. That accounts for 6 of the 46 athletes on the team.

Below are a set of interactive graphs to break down the roster further. Each of the three tabs at the top represents a different breakdown.

Cal Women's Swimming & Diving 30 Oct
Thursday was a big day for the Golden Bears with 8 women named to U.S. teams for the 2015 World Championships, Pan American Games and World University Games.

8 Cal Women Named to U.S. National Teams

Eight Golden Bears have been chosen to represent the United States in international competition next summer with spots on the 2015 World Championships, 2015 Pan American Games and 2015 World University Games teams, USA Swimming announced Thursday.

Three current members of the California women's swimming program will be heading to Kazan, Russia, next Aug. 2-9 for the World Championships. Sophomore Missy Franklin, the four-time Olympic gold medalist who captured a record six gold medals at the 2013 World meet, is slated to compete in four individual events 100- and 200-meter backstroke and 100- and 200-meter freestyle and could be added to any of three relay squads. Franklin won both backstrokes and the 200 free, in addition to gold in the 400 and 800 free relay and 400 medley relay, in 2013. She was also fourth in the 100 free.

In addition, junior Rachel Bootsma, who won Olympic gold as a member of the U.S. 400 medley relay in 2012, will race in the 50 back after capturing the U.S. title at the Phillips 66 National Championships this past summer, and freshman Cierra Runge qualified in the 400 free and for the 800 free relay.

The Pan American Games will be held July 14-18, 2015, in Toronto and will feature Cal alumnae Natalie Coughlin and Caitlin Leverenz. Coughlin, a 12-time Olympic medalist who was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this month, will be in the 50 and 100 free, while Caitlin Leverenz, a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 individual medley, will swim the 200 and 400 IM.

Finally, the U.S. World University Games roster will include current Bears Bootsma, senior Melanie Klaren, sophomore Celina Li and junior Elizabeth Pelton. Bootsma and Pelton will race in the 100 back, with Klaren in the 200 back and Li in the 200 IM.

"Having eight swimmers on these teams says a lot and is something that we are really proud of," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "They're going to get the experience of traveling and meeting people, as well as face the challenges and opportunities that present themselves at these international meets. This is a big summer leading into Rio for the 2016 Olympics. To have people swimming in different competitions and in different events will be very valuable."

3 Cal Coaches Selected to Team USA Staffs

Cal coaches will hold prominent positions on Team USA staffs next summer.

BERKELEY Golden Bear swimmers have been making themselves known on the international stage for many years, and Monday the people behind those accomplishments were recognized by USA Swimming when three of Cal's coaches were named to national team staffs.

Men's swimming & diving coach David Durden has been tabbed as head coach of the U.S. men's team for the 2015 FINA World Championships that will be contested in Kazan, Russia, next Aug. 2-9. Also making the trip to Worlds will be women's swimming & diving coach Teri McKeever, the 2012 Olympic head coach who will be an assistant for the U.S. women's squad.

In addition, men's assistant coach Yuri Suguiyama has been named an assistant for the American team at the World University Games set for July 4-11 in Gwangju, South Korea.

"Anytime you have been named a head coach of a USA National Team it is because of the accomplishments of the entirety of the staff, and the accomplishments of individual athletes who have helped you get to that position," Durden said. "It is because of the hard work of so many people that I get to be recognized as the head coach."

Earlier this fall, nearly two dozen Cal swimmers were named to U.S. teams that will swim in major international meets in 2015:

Golden Bear Men
World Championships (4) sophomore Ryan Murphy and alumni Nathan Adrian, Anthony Ervin and Tom Shields
World University Games (5) sophomore Janardan Burns, freshman Connor Green, junior Jacob Pebley, junior Josh Prenot and senior Seth Stubblefield

Golden Bear Women

Have listed their SCM seed times, along with the top 3 + slowest + non-Cal Team USA qualifiers, for reference.

Really excited to see how Amy, Abbey & Kathleen will fare against top flight international competition, and rooting for them to light up the pool with some electrifying swims even if they aren't expected (yet) to seriously challenge for a podium spot at this early stage of their swimming careers. Would be most happy to be proven wrong on this of course hehe! Actually if they can get past prelims into the semifinals (or even better, finals), would be a really promising accomplishment already!

Note that the Short Course Meters format isn't raced very frequently in the US, so some of these seed times may not be all that representative, esp for the high schoolers who are competing here (unless they have previously participated on the World Cup tours abroad as part of the Junior National Team program).

A few ad hoc thoughts:
1) Kathleen will be fighting hard also to make finals in the 100m/200m back (seeded 9th/8th respectively). Hope she'll swim fast enough to rep Team USA in the semis at the least.
2) Abbey's seeded pretty low in the 50m (19th) & 100m free (27th) as she'll be facing a formidable field, but I have confidence she will make one or both semifinals if she hits her taper just right.
3) Amy's a bit of a wildcard/dark horse when it comes to SCM racing...she's seeded all the way down in the 100m (39th) & 50m back (45th), but definitely will be cheering her on for a pleasant surprise or two. Would be rather sweet if the coaches take a chance on Bilquist and put her on a relay or two if she's performing above expectations, possibly even have her swimming free instead of back on a leg...

Will be interesting at any rate to see how all their times here will translate to SCY (more accurate of a conversion than if it had been from LCM). This top level meet could also provide a useful indication as to the ongoing progress & development of our incoming recruits...a glimpse perhaps of good things to come next fall? http://swimswam.com/14-storylines-2014-fina-short-course-world-championships-plus-meet-links/

Mini-storylines:

5. Can Tom Shields rise to the challenge? Also in the butterfly races is Tom Shields, an American short course specialist who had his long course breakout last summer. Shields has been priming his short course meters speed with multiple appearances on the World Cup circuit, and took third overall while challenging Le Clos on a number of occasions.

6. A glimpse into the future for American swimming: The American women feature a quartet of high school-age swimmers who could very well be a big part of the nation’s swimming future. Abbey Weitzeil, Katherine Drabot, Amy Bilquist and Kathleen Baker will all compete in Doha, and it’ll be worth keeping an eye on how they respond to the pressure. Weitzeil, Baker and Bilquist will swim together at Cal next year, while Drabot is currently a high school junior.

Just some quick updates, in a bit of a rush and haven't had a chance to look at results closely so may have missed some notables. As always this is heavily biased towards Team USA swimmers who were/are/will be :bear:s

Kathleen (5th, 57.11) & Amy (11th, 57.82) made it to tonight's 100m back semis, well done!!! Incidentally Amy's time was a very impressive 3+ sec drop from her seeded 1:01.00, and Kathleen also improved on her seed time. Let's cheer them on to qualifying for finals in an hour or so's time, won't be easy with this level of competition but they have the talent to possibly pull it off! Also in the heats of this event, Stephanie, repping HK, swam a 59.44 which ranked her 27th.

Tom Shields' 50.43 was good for the 5th seed for the 100m fly semis tonight, and helped Team USA to a 4th seeded spot in the finals of the 4x100 free. Caitlin also churned out a nice 4:28.43 to grab the 4th spot for the 400m IM finals (with Elizabeth Beisel right behind her with a 4:28.75). Oh, not to forget Natalie's creditable 31.16 that placed 27th overall in the 50m breast, an event she's not exactly known for!

UPDATE from Swimswam:

Women's 4x200m free relay

The 4th-seeded Americans have made two changes to try and close the five-second gab. Elizabeth Beisel and Kathleen Baker have taken the spots in finals that in prelims were occupied by Emily Allen (1:58.30) and Madisyn Cox (1:56.24). That helps the Americans keep pace with the above-mentioned relays, though a podium spot is still not a guarantee

{7:59 am PST} This just in...

Kathleen (57.25) totally killed it by qualifying for Thurs finals from placing 8th in the 100m back semis just now - clutch!

Amy (57.65) missed out on the top 8 with a 12th overall ranking, but still a strong showing that was encouragingly faster than her prelims time (57.82) which bodes brightly for NCAAs down the road. Her SCM time translates to 51.93 in SCY, with her 100y back PB having been 52.58 - so, over half a second's improvement here! It was also really cool to observe Amy seemingly lapping it all up with a "cheesy" smile as she walked out on deck after being announced - hey bae, you've made it to the big leagues now hehe!!! :woohoo

Damir, repping his country Slovenia, goes thru as the 4th seed in tomorrow's 100m breast final.

Caitlin (4:28.74) came in 6th in the 400m IM finals which Belmonte of Spain won in WR time (4:19.86).

Shields is into the 100m fly finals in the 3rd qualifying spot with a time of 49.91.

Tom also anchored the US Men's 4x100m free relay to a come-from-behind bronze medal (3:05.58 ) with a great 46.02 split (was fastest leg shared with Ryan Lochte).

Kathleen (1:54.22) was instrumental in catapulting the US Women's 4x200m free relay team from a last-place start up to 3rd by the time Katie Drabot was done with her 3rd leg. Team USA then finished up with Beisel on the anchor to ultimately a 5th place showing (7:39.48). Very creditable performance considering that our big guns, Missy & Ledecky, aren't participating in this meet! The Netherlands team just crushed China's old WR from 2010 (7:35.94) with an absolutely dominant win in a time of 7:32.85, which was over 4 sec faster than 2nd place China (7:37.02)!

Note that Kathleen's 1:54.22 split here, after adding half a second to allow for the flying start to make it 1:54.72, translates very roughly to 1:43.35 in the 200y free, which further improves upon her PB of 1:43.61, and solidifies Kathleen's current status of being the 2nd fastest :bear: in this event for March 2016 NCAAs, behind only Liz's best time of 1:42.13 from her freshman season (assuming Missy will be out of the collegiate racing picture by then as expected!)...

Tom Shields' 22.29 split on the fly leg helped secure the 3rd seeded position for this evening's finals of the 4x50m medley relay. Team USA's 1:33.25 breaks the American Record (as well as being faster than Italy's old WR of 1:33.65), whilst Russia's 1:32.78 is good for a new WR (though RUS has gone faster with a 1:31.80 back in 2009, but WRs for this event weren't recognized by FINA until 2013 I think)

Abbey demolished her 27th seed time of 54.38 to advance to the 100m free semis later tonight. Her 53.08 from prelims now ranks her the 9th fastest in the entire world class field @ Doha! Really great job baby :bear:! :cheer

Team USA's 1:31.83 breaks their American Record of 1:33.25 from prelims this morning in the 4x50m medley relay. Tom Shields splits a 21.99 on the fly leg to help take us to a bronze medal behind Brazil's 1:30.51 WR win.

Abbey was unable to improve on her 53.08 prelims time after a slow start, and her 53.14 will not be advancing her to the 100m free finals on Friday in the 15th spot. There won't be an American qualifier in that final as Vreeland's 52.69 landed her in the dreaded 9th spot. However, commendable effort racing against the world's elite sprint competition, the experience will stand her in good stead for her promising future (Abbey still has the 50m free and a relay or two to come).

Speaking of relays, just learnt of an alumna bear (Natalie) passing the torch onto a baby bear (Abbey) in the anchor leg of the 4x50 Mixed Medley that's scheduled as the closing event in today's session. Quite an honor for Abbey!

Kathleen did us proud by surpassing her 57.25 semis time & 8th seed to come in 6th (57.07) in the 100m back finals! Good job! Katinka Hosszu won the gold with a WR of 55.03 in that race.

Alumnus Damir Dugonjič ended up 5th with his 57.06 in the 100m breast finals.

Caitlin's 1:00.19 in the 100 IM semis for a 12th place fell short of qualification for finals. Would have been interesting to see what Natalie could have done here if she had been eligible to compete in this event, since her recent 58.55, if she could have replicated that time, would have seeded her 4th for tomorrow's finals...

Yay, Tom Shields snagged the silver in the 100m fly finals (48.99), behind Chad Le Clos' 48.44 WR!

To wrap it all up, Abbey anchored Team USA's 4x50 Mixed Medley relay to a 4th place finish (1:38.16) with her 23.57 free split.

Sincere thanks for all your hard work, UAC!

Props to Kathleen and all the other Golden Bears. Certainly not complaining, but Baker's versatility will be a challenge for Teri at NCAAs. She'll definitely swim two Friday relays (breast leg on 200 medley and 800 free), but her individual event that day is more problematic: 200 free, 100 breast, or 100 back. All are back to back. 2016 Bears will be extremely deep in the 200 free and some (Acker, Cierra, Abbey) don't have a better third individual event option. Bears will also have depth the 100 back (Bootsma, Bilquist, maybe Pelton), so I think Kathleen swims the 100 breast by default. Also depends on who else is in the hunt for the title and how they stack up in those events. Just don't think Teri wants to no point in the 100 breast when she has scorers in the other day two individual events. Not necessarily a bad problem (chasing another title, have a potential A scorer in three consecutive events) to have.

Do agree on Kathleen's versatility presenting a challenge to Teri & Kristen on which events to most effectively use her massive talents to maximize the scoring potential! Fun and not too shabby a problem to have as you had pointed out :p

On another note, Abbey's 23.57 free anchor split from the 4x50m mixed medley relay was only 0.02 s slower than Natalie's prelims time, and after adding 0.5s to account for the flying start, her adjusted time of 24.07 translates very roughly to 21.68 in yards.

This is a notable 0.3s improvement on Abbey's current PB of 21.98 in the 50y free, and would have been worth a 2nd place finish behind only Smoliga's 21.59 win @ 2014 NCAA finals!

Let's see what our baby Golden :bear: sprint star can put up in the 50m free individual rounds starting on Sat! As well as her co-studs Kathleen & Amy in their remaining races :cheer

10 Big Things From Day 2 of 2014 Short Course Worlds

5. No Hardware tonight for the American women Today was a rather low-key day in terms of the American women earning medals. We did see Emma Reaney earn sixth in the women's 50m breaststroke and Lindsay Vrooman claim a seventh place finish in the 800m free final, while Kathleen Baker swam a mega time for her in the 100m backstroke 57.07 to earn sixth. These were all commendable performances, but something felt a little "off" not seeing an American woman on the podium in an individual event tonight.

6. American youth flourished Talent did present itself for the American women today with superb performances by the young Kathleen Baker and Abbey Weitzeil. Prior to this meet, Baker's best time in scm 100 backstroke was the 57.79 she clocked at the last World Cup stop. She has progressively improved her time here, however; starting off at a 57.11 in prelims and ending in a 57.07 for sixth in Finals. For Weitzeil's part, the she earned fifteenth in the women's 100m freestyle semi's with her time of 53.14. Simply amazing on the world stage for these 18-year-olds.

Hmmm...potential for an All-Bears relay repping the US of A?

Be sure to watch for @amybilquist in prelims at World Champs later tonight. She is competing in prelims for the 50 back & 4x100 free relay

Not sure how accurate the above tweet from Amy's club is (the 50m back won't be contested until Sat!), as the Start List for the Women's 4x100m free relay doesn't currently have a breakdown of the individual swimmers who are entered for their country's relay teams: http://omegatiming.com/File/Download?id=00010E010D01003300FFFFFFFFFFFF01

However, would be really exciting if the national coaches do put Amy on a leg of that free relay in prelims (she has officially qualified for just the 50m + 100m back individuals @ SC Worlds)...

Would be a dream come true (and a preview of things to come) if Team USA were then to field an all-:bear: relay comprising of, say, Amy, Abbey, Kathleen and Natalie! Though at least one or more of them would be subbed out for finals in favor of Shannon Vreeland.

Guess we'll just have to settle for 3 out of 4 - Natalie, Amy + Madison...at least in prelims!
