Congratulations to both teams! My alma-mater, UCSB, gave Cal all that they could handle. This is two consecutive years that the Bears advanced over the Gauchos by a goal. Go Gauchos! GO BEARS!

thrilling game. congrats to the boys, good luck in the next round against brown. carrasco should probably have gotten sent off for his retaliation punch on the ucsb player who tackled him and subsequently got a red card.

also- UCSB has a great fanbase. they are like british soccer fans with their songs and chants and cheers. a friend told me that they average around 15k for home soccer games- very impressive. their travelling fans made themselves heard today.

i wonder if the 3 red cards will translate into suspensions for games next year since their season is now done.

I would imagine soccer is a big deal at UCSB since they did win an NCAA Championship and they are hosting this year; they don't have anything else- no football; their water polo program is no longer in the mix for anything as it regularly was 20 years ago and the basketball team can only hope for a mediocre season. These things along with a ton of Northern Californians who go there would make it ripe for a great soccer following in Berkeley.Hopefully, we can get a nice turnout next Sunday-Beat Brown!

Barabbas, while I don't really disagree with most of your comments, I think their hoop team is aimed at another NCAA tourney. They didn't look good last year in Berkeley, but the team was basically sophs and frosh. Now as battle tested juniors for the most part, and many NorCal kids by the way, they look to be one of the better mid-majors on the coast if not the country. I think Orlando Johnson, who stood up well against Ohio State in the NCAA's, is a really great player. He went for 35 the other night in their win over Fresno State.

Their support of soccer is off the charts. I believe they have shattered their own attendance record by several thousand fans a game this season. Incredibly they drew just under 16,000 for their 2-0 win over UCLA the largest on-campus crowd in NCAA soccer history.

I went over to their website, Gaucholocos.com, and I think they are fairly concerned about the post game actions, but have really serious questions, perhaps legit, about the under qualified ref.

when they lost to Cal in early November in Berkeley. They'll have great difficulty ever breaking into the big four from the Pac 10 from the state of California (USC, Cal, Stanford & UCLA), however.

Orlando Johnson hails from Palma High-Salinas (Central Coast Section).
Go Gauchos! GO BEARS!
