Cut some slack. I personally know the young man and his family. If he is as good a swimmer as he is a quality person we have a good one. He has wanted this so badly for some time, and we have kidded back and forth whether it would actually happen. I was informed today of the commitment and cannot be happier. I will go to work with him on the spelling of Berzerkely, but personally wish he would just say "CAL"....

Worse mistake (but I assume it comes from his club team) is the mention of Mission Viejo. He is a Dana Hills swimmer, a Laguna Niguel resident and a great young man. Mission Viejo and Mater Dei are names in the OC that SUCK up talent from everywhere. Our walk on back up center Addison Ooms is a Laguna Niguel young man who happened to be wooed by Mater Dei. For you NorCal people think DeLaSalle, Bellarmine, etc.

This is shaping up to be a terrific recruiting class for the Bears as it addresses specific needs following the previous recruiting class (Seliskar (fly,breast, IM), Thomas (back,fly), Sands (breast) and Norman (free distance).

Four years ago Cal brought in Seth Stubblefield, Tyler Messerschmidt and Fabio Gimondi. This group formed the backbone for our free sprint that has been a team strength in our past 4 NCAA bids. With Seth and Fabio having graduated Durden needed to rebuild and rebuild he did. Although this class does not have a Caeleb Dressel level sprint talent, Durden brings in 3 of the top 8 finishers in the 50 free at 2014 Juniuor Nationals and 2 of the top 8 in the 100 free.

Jensen, Vergani and Gwo, on paper, look better than Stubblefield, Messerschmidt and Gimondi. Ethan Young brings depth to our backstroke group. esp the 200, while recent commit Shane Forker fits in nicely with Nick Norman, Janardin Burns and Ryan Kao to form a competitive distance group. ( I wonder if Runge bolted from Cal due to lack of training partners on the women's side?)

Jack Xie is the wild card recruit, the #5 recruit according to Swimswam. Only a year stateside so relatively little yards data. Xie's IM and Fly times show potential.

For those who wonder why some on the boards discount collegeswimming.com recruit ratings, take a look at the 2015 #2 recruit Simon Lamar who recently committed to Stanford. Stanford somehow pulled the fastest high school sprinter in the country. Or not. Take a look.

Cal men are losing 8 seniors and have landed 6 in the class of 2016 so far...Many of the team's top swimmers are in the graduation class, however. Are the newbies similar in talent level? GO BEARS!

Team loses 4 senior studs (Messy, Prenot, Pebley, TW). Additionally Gornay and Cambell are MIA. Team desperately needed sprinters and landed them. 5 of the top 17 swimmers is a huge haul, even without Rooney and Shoults. Texas and 'SC have been very quiet on the recruiting trail, and nobody is close to the current Cal class. UT and 'SC have to save some $s for Olympic redshirts.

MVN (Klaren, Janardan, McL, Nornan, Shane) has been very good for Cal. Frosh superstar Baker also misspelled Berkeley when she commit. It's a pardonable sin.

Defending champ Texas will be a huge favorite at 2016 NCAAs. It's expected that legendary UT coach Eddie Reese will retire after the season. Murphy's prep coach Sergio Lopez is rumored to become the next UT coach. LSJU women's coach Greg Meehan (former Durden asst) at UT would be more favorable for Cal.

---------

1. Maxime Rooney – Pleasanton Seahawks – Livermore, CA **Verbally committed to Florida**
Best Times: 200 free – 1:34.57, 500 free – 4:20.60, 100 free – 43.58, 50 free – 20.19, 100 back – 49.85, 200 back – 1:44.79, 200 fly – 1:46.21

====

2. Michael Jensen – Upper Dublin Aquatic Club – Dresher, PA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best times: 100 free – 43.29, 200 free – 1:35.31, 50 free – 20.20, 100 fly – 47.41, 200 fly – 1:47.69

Upper Dublin’s Michael Jensen gives Rooney a good run for his money. Jensen is a bit faster in the ever-important 100 free, and pretty comparable in the 50. And like Rooney, Jensen is on the rise – at this time last year, he was just 44.3 in the 100 free and 1:39.39 in the 200. That’s a huge improvement curve, particularly in the 200 free, and it should make Jensen a high-upside target for any program. His butterfly times are a nice bonus, and could give him extra versatility on medley relays should any team have plenty freestylers but a hole in butterfly.

====

3. Grant Shoults – Mission Viejo Nadadores – Laguna Hills, CA **Verbally committed to Stanford**
Best times: 200 free – 1:34.54, 500 free – 4:15.56, 1650 free – 15:14.40, 200 fly, 1:45.32

4. Nicholas (True) Sweetster – Gator Swim Club – Ocala, FL
Best times: 1650 free – 14:49.43, 500 free – 4:16.63, 200 free – 1:36.90

====

5. Xiangfei (Jack) Xie – Peak Swimming, Saratoga, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best times: 100 fly – 46.75, 200 IM- 1:45.81

Xiangei Xie comes in with two of the most intriguing times in this class – most notably a 1:45.81 in the 200 IM that should make him an instant scoring threat at the conference level for most teams. The downside, though, is how ridiculously hard it’s been to score at NCAAs in the IM events of late. Last year, it took a 1:43.68 just to sneak into the B final in the 200 IM and have a chance of putting up just a point or two. Xie’s 100 fly is also right on the cusp of NCAA-scoring level in a brutal event. While he doesn’t have a lot of eye-popping times in other races yet, that IM prowess would suggest he’s got some versatility to him that should intrigue college coaches.

====

6. Mark Jurek – Arizona Gold Swimming – Gilbert, AZ **Verbally committed to USC**
Best times: 200 fly – 1:43.72, 100 fly – 47.80, 200 IM – 1:47.03, 400 IM – 3:48.32

7. Thomas Anderson – King Aquatic Club – Federal Way, WA **Verbally committed to Arizona**
Best times: 100 back – 47.24, 200 back – 1:44.10, 100 free – 44.42, 50 free – 20.10, 100 fly – 48.00

8. Greg Brocato – Central Bucks Swim Team – Ambler, PA **Verbally committed to UNC**
Best times: 100 free – 43.91, 50 free – 20.09, 200 free – 1:37.71, 100 fly – 48.37

9. James Jones – Nation’s Capital Swim Club – Fairfax, VA **Verbally committed to Michigan**
Best times: 50 free – 19.95, 100 – 43.97, 200 free – 1:39.48, 100 fly – 48.98

====

10. Andrea Vergani – Bolles School Sharks – Jacksonville, FL **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best times: 100 free – 43.91, 50 free – 20.04, 100 fly – 49.38

Yet another 43.9/20.0 sprinter, Vergani is actually Italian, but makes our list as he competes and trains in the U.S., with the Bolles School Sharks program that launched Dressel, Ryan Murphy and Joseph Schooling among so many others. Vergani, too, is on the edge of joining the 19-second club and should be a key developmental relay piece for any college program.

====

11. Ethan Young – Carpet Capital Aquatics Club – Dalton, GA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best times: 200 back – 1:43.06, 100 back – 47.47, 50 back – 21.90, 100 fly – 48.92

Young could contribute to Cal in either the backstroke or butterfly races, but the former of those events is where his international aspirations lay. Young is the two-time defending Georgia 1A-5A (small schools) High School state champion in the 100 back, which goes next to three-straight runner-up finishes in the 100 fly. He also placed 3rd in both the 50 and 100 yard backstrokes at the 2015 NCSA Junior National Championships.

====

12. Jeremy Babinet – Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics – Redwood City, CA **Verbally committed to Michigan**
Best times: 100 breast – 53.70, 200 breast – 1:58.10

13. Taylor Abbott – Nitro Swimming – Cedar Park, TX **Verbally committed to Tennessee**
Best times: 1650 free – 15:01.46, 500 free – 4:24.18

14. Charlie Swanson – NOVA of Virginia – Richmond, VA **Verbally committed to Michigan**
Best times: 400 IM – 3:48.98, 200 IM – 1:48.90, 200 breast – 2:00.05

15. Thomas Cope – Dayton Raiders – Dayton, OH **Verbally committed to Michigan**
Best times: 100 breast – 54.74, 200 breast – 1:59.55, 200 IM – 1:47.93, 200 free – 1:37.48

16. David Crossland – Delaware Swim Team – Hockessin, DE **Verbally committed to Auburn**
Best times: 100 fly – 47.27, 100 back – 48.47

====

17. Albert Gwo – Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics – Mountain View, CA **Verbally committed to Cal**
Best times: 50 free – 19.90, 100 free – 44.60, 100 fly – 49.72

Gwo is a senior at Los Altos High School, where he won both sprint freestyle events at the inaugural California State Championships in May 2015. He registered lifetime bests in the 50 yard free (19.90) as well as the 100 (44.60), setting the bar high for subsequent meet record-breaker hopefuls. Gwo went on to great success in the 50 meter free at Junior Nationals; he clocked a 23.12 to finish fourth in that final, and he anchored Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics’ 4x100m free relay with a strong 51.45.

====

18. Benjamin Ho – Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics – Los Altos, CA **Verbally committed to Stanford**
Best times: 200 back – 1:44.18, 100 back – 48.45, 200 IM – 1:48.86, 100 free – 44.71

19. James Murphy – Machine Aquatics – Clifton, VA **Verbally committed to Stanford**
Best times: 100 free – 44.71, 200 free – 1:36.67, 100 back – 49.05

20. Ted Schubert – NOVA of Virginia – Richmond, VA **Verbally committed to Virginia**
Best times: 200 back – 1:45.30, 100 back – 48.69, 100 fly – 48.04, 200 fly – 1:44.97, 400 IM – 3:52.36

Texas men are a near lock to repeat. Their recruiting has stalled because of coaching uncertainty. Widely believed that legendary coach Eddie Reese will retire after this season. No contingency plan in place. Murphy's prep coach Sergio Lopez (now Singapore National Coach) rumored to be the next coach. LSJU's Greg Meehan could take over too, although that might mean Kristen Cunane or Yuri coaching the women on the farm. Lots of moving parts.

'SC has at least two redshirts and potentially three defers/grayshirts, so they have to hold schollys for 2017. Dylan Carter is redshirting (training with Abbey Weitzeil's club team). Santo Conderolli is also redshirting, but may also be transferring (Sergio Lopez was his prep coach-Murphy, Schooling, Dressel, Carter). Top three 2015 recruits (Viserring, Mulcare, Valente) are all either deferring or grayshirting (enrolling in January).

True Sweetser may still be in the mix for LSJU, but probably going Ivy. Way too many distance swimmers on the farm already.

Bear women are the 2016 favorite even if Manuel doesn't redshirt. Big favorite if she does.

No real mystery why Rooney would pass on the farm-still gets top recruits, but they rarely improve. Princeton (Corey Okubo, Cole Buese) have passed them up as a purely academic pick for swimming.

Another Cal legacy Karl Arvidsson will swim for the Bears. His dad Par won the gold medal in the 100 Fly in Moscow, was a world record holder, and swam on Cal's first two NCAA championship teams. Went to Harvard b school. Karl's mom is also a Bear and was in the same high school class as Alicia Grima's dad.

Thanks BD for the heads-up on Karl Arvidsson. While his best event times in the breast stroke put him well outside Pac 12 scoring consideration perhaps Nort can work his magic. Anyways, always nice to have room for legacy athletes.

Arvidsson's event times

200 Y Breast – 2:02.99 (Feb 2005)
100 Y Breast - 56.13 (May 2015

I also noted that Cal apparently has a recent verbal from Polish fly and free sprinter Pawel Sendyk.
Since Sendyk’s times in the 50/100 free and fly are in meters it’s difficult to predict how he will adjust to yards, but we can hope he will develop along the lines of Marcin Tarczynski.

Sendyk's event times:

50 L Free 23.15 converts to 20.14 in 50 yd. free
100 L Free 50.8 converts to 44.35 in yards
100 scm 100 fly 53.47 converts to 48 in yards
50 L Fly 24.38 converts to 21.33 in yards *

* Edit. I just noted that Pawel won the silver medal in the 50 meter fly at the 2015 European games with a 23.97 which converts to 20.97 in yards, which is pretty quick and would make him an immediate option in the 200 medley relay.

With the recent verbals of Sendyk, Arvidsson and ‘Aukai Lileikis, joining earlier verbal commits given by Shane Forker, Albert Gwo, Jack Xie, Andrea Vergani , Ethan Young and Michael Jensen, Cal has addressed many team needs that arise from a large senior graduating class including Josh Prenot, Jacob Pebley , Trent Williams and Tyler Messerschmidt. Durden also may have scholarship $$ freed up from the likely losses of Kyle Gornay and Sven Campbell.

I find it odd we haven’t had any official Cal announcement regarding the men’s class of 2016, but it’s a nice class if everybody follows through with their verbals.

Cal Commit 'Aukai Lileikis Wins 13 Events at Hawaiian Age Group Champs

National Junior Team swimmer 'aukai Lileikis dominated his final short course Hawaiian Age Group Championship meet last weekend by picking up 13 wins in 15 events for the 17-18 age group, including a sweep of the relays with his Aulea Swim Club teammates.

Lileikis is a versatile IM'er, and so unsurprisingly his perfect weekend of competition (the only three races he didn't win, he didn't enter) included wins across every stroke, and 6 new personal best times.

The highlights of the weekend came in the freestyles, where he dropped half-a-second in the 100 to a 43.63, and over half-a-second in the 200 to a 1:34.96. He also dipped under the 20-second barrier in the 50 free for the first time.

Lileikis' full weekend's worth of results (* lifetime best):
50 free 19.95*
100 free 43.63*
200 free 1:34.96*
500 free 4:31.55
100 back 49.94*
100 breast 56.34
100 fly 48.36*
200 IM 1:47.33*

Lileikis is a senior in high school and this time is just four-tenths of a second away from Grant Shoults' National Independent High School Record in the 200 yard free. Shoults is also a senior, and both swimmers reside in states where the high school championship season comes in the spring semester, although Shoults will run into championship season in California late enough in the season that he will have to make some choice about his approach to the pending U.S. Olympic Trials in early July.

The California championship season falls in May, whereas Hawaii's championship will be from February 12th-13th.

Full meet results available here: http://results.teamunify.com/hslsc/

‘Aukai Lileikis had a great meet to close 2015 with a handful of personal bests; I believe his freestyle times in the 50/100 and 200, and his 200 IM are @ top 5 in the class of 2016. His SwimSwam and Collegeswimming recruit rankings reflect his older times, and I would think he would be a top 8-12 recruit in the class.

In addition to ‘Aukai Lileikis, several other verbals (since no announcement yet from the team re commits) had December meets. Our top recruit, Michael Jensen swam a 19.85 50 free which I believe is the best in the class (although the fastest prep 50 was just swam by super 2017 recruit Ryan Hoffer with a 19.06, and Hoffer also added a 41.23 in the 100 free, which is well under the best time for the 2016 class swam by Max Rooney the Florida recruit who swam a personal best of 42.76 this month.)

Backstroker recruit Ethan Young swam a PB in the 100 back and has top 2 times in both the 100 and 200 back for the 2016 class. A local kid from Folsom, Bryce Mefford has a top time in the 200 back (better than Young) and I wonder if he is on the Cal radar.

Albert Gwo swam a PB in the 100 free, but could not improve upon his 19.90 PB in the 50 free, which may trail only Jensen for the top time in the event for the class.

Andy Song swam a PB (by 2/100ths of a sec) in the 50 back, while Jack Xie improved in the 100 breast (PB of 55.57), but could not match his PB's in his primary events, the 100 Fly and 200 IM.

Karl Arvidsson swam PBs in the 100 breast (55.58) and 200 breast (1:59.86) in Dec.

Nice efforts all by these (hopefully) incoming Bears.

Don't know how much, if any, scholly money Durden has left, but Josa is a stud. Teri's team is doing fine at SwimMAC with Baker and Maija, but kinda odd that Durden hasn't landed any recruits yet from his mentor David Marsh.

Thanks BD for the heads-up on Karl Arvidsson. While his best event times in the breast stroke put him well outside Pac 12 scoring consideration perhaps Nort can work his magic. Anyways, always nice to have room for legacy athletes.

Arvidsson's event times

200 Y Breast 2:02.99 (Feb 2005)
100 Y Breast - 56.13 (May 2015)

Good news here is that Karl had got his 100 breast time down to 54.97 @ Friday's prelims session. That time, along with his 1:49.38 in the 200 IM finals (2nd to fellow incoming :bear: Xie), are both PBs :beer:
