Cal put 5 up, Furds put 5 up, and georgia has 3 up i think. The furds might catch up to us tonight. We really need our B finalists to do well (Kelly, Pelton, Kathleen). Those are really valuable points esp since we dont have divers.
..or better yet another DQ for furds and the Georgia peaches!

Ok, basketball season is over. Time to focus on swimming. Hope none of our swimmers break their hands or have back spasms right before their swims today. #justalittlebitter

Hey don't you forget 'bout those neck injuries either lol ...or those stress fractures (tho to be fair, Amy had that happened to her a few months before coming here)

2016 Women's NCAA Updated Team Score Predictions: Day 3 Finals

{Furdies photo removed }

Following the Friday morning preliminary sessions, Cal, Georgia, and Stanford look to be locked in a three-team battle for the NCAA team title. With their DQ in last night's 200 free relay, the Cardinal looked like they may be out of the mix, but a solid morning session and some big diving points from Gracia Leydon-Mahoney have put them right back in the thick of it. Georgia was not as sharp as yesterday morning, but still gained 16.5 points on their seeds, and grabbed a couple of key 8th and 16th place finishes. Cal, meanwhile, slipped another 9.5 points from their seeds this morning.

Overall, based on results from this morning (including 3m diving prelims) and psych sheets for tomorrow, Cal holds a 0.5-point edge over Stanford, with Georgia nipping at their heels.

In terms of points, it doesn't look too good right now. We are gonna be 40 pts behind Georgia and dead even with furd going into day 3.

Scoring through day 3 + tomorrow's psych scores:

Stanford 379.0, Cal 376.5, Georgia 376.5

Gonna be a close one for the team title!

Still think anyone can win it, depending on their Saturday performance. Georgia 285 Cal 267.5 Furd 265

Extremely close team race. DQ was a killer for the furdettes. May come down to the 400 Free Relay. Boots could be key. Not even sure she could scratch this late, but she may be able to score higher in the 200 Fly than the 100 Free.

Yup, just caught up on results...will be tight for the finish with Bears as underdogs (no diving or distance pts, slim breast chances), our women will have to reach deep into their reserves to come out with something special tomorrow!

The 200 Medley relay was really exciting, Farida (21.12) almost caught up to Lia (21.48) for the upset! Boots (23.36 - fastest 50 back time ever?) & Farida with the swiftest splits amongst the entire A field, Noemie 2nd fastest (22.68) after Worrell (22.55).

Well done Bears with a valiant effort overall tonight

This time too much to make up on the BR leg. Boots letting it all hang out there! Hoping Liz makes one last championship swim in the 200 back!

I was going to inquire about Elizabeth Pelton...She was part of the opening relay but has been relatively invisible (not qualifying for the final) in other events. She won the 200 m backstroke last season if I remember correctly. Didn't she score in some other events, too?

The team still has the same holes (breast/ distance freestyle/diving) as most other years. Today (day 3) there were six swimming events and the Bears were feast or famine. They has nobody in the finals in three events but had multiple scorers in the other three (averaging 35-40 points in each). I always thought that Cal was relatively strong in the IM events but noticed no Bears qualifield for the final in the 400 IM. Pelton, Naze, Li? Finish strong-it appears that the Bears should score in 4 of the 6 swim races on Saturday! GO BEARS!

Three way dual meet. Bears won't score in diving and 1650 and highly unlikely in the 200 Breast. Every point counts, so Farida, Amy, Baker, Boots, Noemie, Naze, Pelton, KV, Marina, Acker, Celina, and Hull all have to come up big. Just realized everyone will have at least one swim today and need to make it count and fight for more. Bears would gladly accept any help from other teams pushing LSJU or Georgia down or out of scoring.

400 Free Relay: Farida, Amy, Boots plus Baker or KV?
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Amy (6th) and Georgia's Stewart (5th) make A Final in 200 Back. Baker (10th) and Pelton (12th) in B Final along with LSJU's Hu (11th) and Howe (13th).
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Farida makes A Final (7th) and Boots makes B Final (10th) in 100 Free. Georgia (Smoliga) and LSJU (Neal) qualify 1-2.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Stanford (Haase-4th) and Georgia (Zhu-8th!) make A Finals in 200 Breast. Marina-21st. Our Hoosier girls (Lilly-first, Tucker-tied for second) are honorary Bears for fhe day. No such honor for 'SC's Vose (fifth), but will root for her over Haase and Zhu.
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Title will be decided in the 400 Free Relay or 200 Fly.

Naze (4th) and Noemie (8th), LSJU (Eastin-2nd, Engel-12th), and Georgia (Flickinger-5th, Kingsley-6th). Celina-24th.
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
'SC qualifies first in the 400 Free Relay, LSJU-2nd, Georgia-3rd, Bears-4th.

Boots, Acker, KV, Farida. Georgia nipped Bears by 0.01. LSJU ahead by 0.2. Bears have upside with Amy and maybe KB in the finals.

Ahhhh Im being a little pessimistic here but I dont see us being able to close the gap against georgia unless they DQ. We might even come in 3rd depending on how we do on therelay.

Still so proud of our Lady Bears despite some unfortunate setbacks in losing McL and Cierra. I know we all wished we had King in the breast strokes which would have easily insured the title this year, but here are TWO Frosh that would be nice to get---without tampering, of course: Bailey Anderson (Denver) 4:06 in the 400 IM and the diver Zheng at the University of Nevada who is a top 1-2 in diving at the Championships this week. If our swimmers can be lured away or decide to leave the team, we should see if there is any interest of some top competitors at other schools. That or we go the foreign route which so many schools already do.

I've never been a fan of the term "Lady Bears" - isn't that what Baylor calls their women athletes? We're just the Bears. Or Golden Bears. No need for the qualifier, IMO. That said - gonna' be an uphill battle tonight to win. Hope our Bears can perform some miracles

For kicks: Here is the logo for the old Women's Athletics Department at Cal (from a wool blanket I got as a Senior athlete in the 80's): close up

Hideous.

I thought a bit about the diving as I watched on ESPN3 last night. 3/8 of the A final springboard divers are of Chinese origin, and all train at schools (e.g., Nevada, Miami of Ohio, Minnesota), where the diving coach is also of Chinese origin. Our fortunes may change with the new aquatic center, which should have a legitimate (platform) diving tower.

Another thing to note is that divers are generally better at either springboard or platform. Springboard is more important for dual meets and thus the level of competition is much stronger, but platform may be easier in terms of NCAA qualification and/or scoring. This could be an interesting factor when targeting diving recruits.

No shortage of potential transfers who could help the 2017 Bears and Teri does have money to spend. Highly unlikely that a stud from a major program would transfer, but Minnesota's Zeiger and IU's Tucker would be top picks in the fantasy draft.

Smaller school stars would be more likely. Eastern Michigan breastroker Duncan or DU's Andison would be interesting. Bears don't need another 2IMer, but could use another 4IMer. Canadian, so maybe Noemie knows her.

Interesting comments on diving and the Chinese connection. Teri's team hasn't totally lacked qualifiers, but scorers is a different deal. Wild that a couple of teams have 4 divers at NCAAs. Ideally Teri would have a scoring spring boarder and platform diver. Durden doesn't have the money to spend. Finn and Phoebe were highly touted, so it's important they succeed once facilities are in place.

Hey, thanks so much for all the updates on this morning's heats, BD & everyone else! Definitely makes it so much easier/quicker for catching up on results, cheers  Bit of a hectic schedule at my end today, but hope to watch at least some of the finals session (with a spot of luck) this evening!

More predictions from Swimswam below...apparently Georgia's calculated to come out on top after a tight tussle with the Furd, seems like Bears are expected to trail our 2 arch-rivals by a bit of a margin. Dawg's results in the mile and Stanfurd's diving could be the decider, but don't discount it being a nail-biter coming down to the final event, the 400 free relay where the furdettes are the favourites.

Just hope our women will give a good account of themselves and hold their heads up high, I'm personally very appreciative of all that they have accomplished in the aftermath of what has been a massively challenging and topsy-turvy season of swimming for them... Swim on you :bear:s!!!
