That was the falter that I was looking for. Unfortunately, we did the same in the 200 Medley .

Bears are back in the hunt. Need to pound Georgia in the relays, tough break in the 400 Medley. Boots in the 800 Free Relay rather than 200 Free Relay still seems weird.

Thought there might be a DQ, but was worried Bears would press too much. Huge for KV and Hull. Abbey who?

Weird or not, at least the results worked out fortuitously in our favour in this relay (200 free)! Good to reward KV & Val with some experience at an NCAA relay A final & bolster their confidence too...

Not knocking Rachael, but don't reckon she could have trumped Boots' low 1:44 split considering that Acker's Pac-12 leadoff was in the mid 1:46s, and we could have lost points there in the 800 free relay if Bootsie hadn't come to the rescue with Katie McL out...

As for Cal's misstep in the 400 Medley relay, well reckon I'd rather go with a chance to garner up to 18 pts (B final), then zilch (the Furd's DQ in the 200 free relay)... :p

Bears IMers need to go after a rattled Eastin plus Georgia is weak in 200 IM.

Yeah Lilly is such a stud, I really think Breeja's NCAA record's going to go down tomorrow! Pity she was never recruited by Teri (prob due to budget limitations with half of the Dream Team being already in-state, hence Eastin & Vose being recruited at the time)

200 IM:

Furdette Eastin (1:51.65) got Caitlin's American record, but Kathleen had a nice swim too for 2nd (1:52.95)...both were far ahead of the field. Vose 3rd (1:54.27). Top 3 all freshies, and Pac-12 to boot.

Kelly tied for 5th, Celina 8th in the A final.

Lilly's kinda fast. Rooting for the Hoosiers in the 400 Medley Final. Almost positive Gene Hackman decided to star in Hoosiers after going through CalSO with his daughter. Still kinda pissed I never had a pop with Popeye Doyle/Norman Dale.

Definitely. If we assume that we could have finished 2nd and we win the B's, we only lose 16 points. Furd lost 46 points relative to us for their faux pas.

Georgia's Olivia Ball & Stanfurd's Gracia Leydon Mahoney ended up 7th & 8th respectively in the A final (1m diving), so at least the damage's relatively limited there, i.e. could have been worse!

400 Medley Relay:

Bears takes 2nd in the B final meeting their seeded position - Amy (on back leadoff, still not in top form), Marina (sub minute breast, albeit from a flying start), Noemie (fly with a strong 50.58 split), Kathleen (free). Guess Farida had to rest up after having raced the 200 free relay & 50 free (+ prelims).

A final update - Furds break their American/NCAA record to take the title. Bulldawgs 4th, Trojans 5th.

Bears down 30 after day one. Still in it, but need to hold serve tomorrow, narrow the margin, and finish strong on Saturday. Recovered OK from a bad relay.

Really wanted the Bears to win for Missy in 2015, but a repeat would be especially schweeet given such a bumpy season.

Every swimmer in Atlanta has scored for the Bears at NCAAs during their career. All but KB have been an individual, relay, or NCAA team champion already.

No Boots in either relay today, so she's good to go in both the 200 Medley and 400 Free relays.

Thanks for the updates. What an eventful day! So we slipped a bit in the 50FR and 4Medley relay and Furd slipped huge with the DQ. How did Georgia do relative to seeding? That prediction of us losing by ONE point has me on pins and needles!

Only other prelims option would be Celina since KB will be in the 100 Back right before (as will Boots and Amy too). Probably Boots, Marina, Noemie, Farida in prelims.

Shouldn't have blame all on Marina. Farida leg was subpar too. An ordinary swim by Farida of 48 would have gotten us into the finals too!

Dawgs are way overachieving according to the chart below which doesn't even factor in the diving - keep in mind that they didn't really show their hand @ SECs. Agree Georgia may historically lose a bit of ground to Bears on Day 2 (now Day 3 under the new scheduling), but will be pushing hard to get 3 ups in the 200 free this year with Cal in danger of not even scoring in this event! UGA also has a knack of surging back on the last day...

Very thankful for Engel's early takeoff otherwise I think we'd prob be lying in the 3rd spot after tonight ~winks~ However, :bear:s will have to dig deep and do it themselves rather than relying on others to stumble (hats off to the Furd as they appeared to be extremely fired up after their DQ misfortunes, responded well by breaking a couple of records!)

Even if we maintain our pre-meet seeding form, several of our most dangerous competitors are riding a wave of confidence having already raced significantly faster than at their conferences.

Another reason why I'm not going to get too complacent about tomorrow, even if it's supposed to be Cal's "best day" in the competition, stems from what we've seen from Lizzie thus far (blown taper, or just fatigue??)... there's a chance Pelton may not even advance to the 200 free finals which would leave Bears with potentially 0 pts unless Rachael really steps up here...c'mon Liz, we all love you and are rooting so hard for you to show everyone that you are still the one to beat!

Farida has also looked vulnerable this week relative to her dominating form @ Federal Way esp when thrown a heavy workload...our relays are quite reliant on Osman being at her best so... Whilst Worrell is looking more & more like the odds on fave for the 100 fly crown, I'm a wee uneasy that some other stud will try to sneak in there and push Farida down from her 2nd seed!

Amy has been some way off her impressive PBs from Pac-12s (trying to adjust to her first NCAAs, or still learning how to best pace/split her races & conserve her energy?), didn't get into the 50 free finals today and may find it really tough to come close tomorrow to her amazing 100 back times from conference.

As a more optimistic counterpoint to my relative doom-and-gloom lol, have a good feeling that Kelly will secure us some nice double digit points in the 400 IM as she has literally blossomed in her senior year... Rooting also for Celina to kill it @ prelims and get into finals even if it's the B (she has a tendency to swim faster in prelims than finals, which is not altogether a bad thing in this particular competition as long as she qualifies for finals, since a point or more would be guaranteed there short of a DQ!).

Noemie has already helped the team with some great fly splits so do look forward to her building on that momentum in the individual. The ultra-versatile Kathleen continues to be a major contributor - I keep stressing out that Baker's been overswimming her races somewhat from watching the web stream where her front half has been incredible but then she pays for all that early expenditure of her energy in the back half - but guess that's her racing style judging from her video interviews lol

Bootsie may turn out to be our secret weapon and punch her way into the 100 fly "up" final from her #11 seeding, without a shadow of a doubt, her role in the relays will be key to say the least!

Well tomorrow is another day, let's see what it has in store for us very soon! Go Bears!

400 IM: Naze-9th, Li-20th. Eastin-1st, Georgia: Cameron-6th, Zhu-16th.

Former Bear Lauren Driscoll-12th. Driscoll was supposed to be a distance ace for the Bears. Now an IMer, 200 backstroker.

Minnesota soph Brooke Zeiger would be an ideal transfer: 500 Free/400 IM/1650 Free scorer and would balance out soph class. Swan for Bluefish, so probably knows Connor Green.

Thanks for the update, BD.

Celina's pre-meet seed for the 400 IM was #18.

Kelly, seeded #8, jumped ahead of the field in her heat by a huge margin with her fly, maintained her lead on back, still ahead in the breast, but then paid for it dearly in the final free leg. Pushed down into the B final by 0.11 sec. Naze will have a challenge maintaining that top "down" seed as will have to deal with the likes of Cox, Driscoll & co.

Bears came roaring back in the 100 fly - Noemie 2nd (seeded #5), Farida 5th (#2), Boots 7th (#11)! Noemie has been threatening from her relay form, also had a feeling Bootsie would make a move here...

200 free - Lizzie into the B final @ #13 (12th seed), Rachael a valiant effort with her 1:45,56 (leading her heat until the last lap) but just fell short @ #20 (was a lowly 38th seed).
Dawgs can brag with their top 2 A qualifiers (MacLean & Flickinger) + 1 B (Raab)...Furdettes got Neal in @ #3, but that was all they could muster with Stafford just shut out @ #17. Kirsten Vose a surprising #18 (2+ sec slower than seed), tho 'SC did qualify Chenault, albeit @ #11.

100 breast - Marina added time from seed to end up @ #33 with her 1:00.86 (was the 27th seed), so no points for Cal in this event.
Lilly King smashed Larson's American & NCAA record with a 57.15, what a bloody stud - made 2nd seed Furdie (Haase)'s 57.73 appear positively pedestrian in comparison!

100 back - Fast heats...Boots (4th seed) looks to defend her title from the 2nd (tied) spot with a 50.85. Amy (top seed from Pac-12s prelims time) churned out a nice 50.96 for the 4th spot, encouraging swim for her after being off in the previous sessions. Kathleen (7th seed) may still be recovering from being put on the 400 Medley relay last night, finished up in the "down" final @ #14.
The Furd will respond with Ally Howe (3rd seed) sitting @ a #2 tie w/Bootsma, whilst Janet Hu (8th seed) squeaks into the 8th slot.
UGA faltered a bit as Olivia Smoliga (5th seed) slipped to #10 after her 50 free record-breaking win yesterday, but managed to (barely) qualify Kylie Stewart (15th seed) @ #16.
icecream12345

Pelton is in the B final for 200 free. Our chances of closing the gap with Georgia is not looking so good. They put 1 up in 400 IM, 1 up in 100 fly and 2 up in 200 free (not counting downs).

LSJU: Hu-4th, Engel-13th in 100 Fly, Georgia's Stewart-8th.

Georgia: First, second, fourteenth in the 200 Free. LSJU: Neal-third, Stafford-seventeenth. Acker-twentieth.
BearDevil

Our girl Lilly King edged out LSJU's Haase for first in the 100 Breast. No Bears (Marina-33rd 1:00.86) or Dawgs made finals.

200 Medley Relay

:bear:s (#3 seed) made it into the A final in the 3rd spot with a 1:36.12 (0.67 sec slower than seed), thanks to Noemie & Farida's back half legs...Boots on back, Marina on breast.

Another long nervous wait whilst results for our heat were reviewed by the officials...in the end, it was Auburn who was slapped with the DQ ~massive sigh of relief~

Stanfurd (#1 seed) will defend their American & NCAA records from the #1 slot as expected..

Georgia (#9 seed) overperformed so moves up to the championship final @ #8.
BearDevil
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looks like 'SC is using Scott as their primary breaststroker and using Vose more as a sprinter/IMer. LSJU will have to use Eastin as their breastroker next year, so potentially Bears, LSJU, and Georgia won't have any 100 Breast scorers. Eastern Michigan frosh Delaney Duncan is a sub minute breast sprinter who could help the Bears.

Cal put 5 up, Furds put 5 up, and georgia has 3 up i think. The furds might catch up to us tonight. We really need our B finalists to do well (Kelly, Pelton, Kathleen). Those are really valuable points esp since we dont have divers.
