On a side note, Finn Scribbick has yet to dive in any competitions this year.

I also noted the same when I tried to put names to faces. Could Green's absence be related to Quah Zheng Wen's recruitment?

OTOH, I was happy to see Gutierrez hanging with Murphy.

I plan on traveling to Arizona to see the men and women compete and hope to see Long, Josa and possiby Green in action.

2016-2017 Men’s NCAA Power Rankings –January Edition
Jared Anderson | January 19th, 2016
With midseason invites behind us, it’s time for our first official SwimSwam Power Rankings of the year 2017! It’s still a dogfight at the top, with defending champs Texas playing their cards closer to the vest, California exploding at the Georgia Invite and NC State continuing to swim good opponents very tough.

#20: OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (PREVIOUS RANK: #16)

#19: TEXAS A&M AGGIES (PREVIOUS RANK: N/A)

#18: WISCONSIN BADGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: N/A)

#17: TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #15)

#16: FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (PREVIOUS RANK: N/A)

#15: ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS (PREVIOUS RANK: #17)

#14: AUBURN TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #9)

#13: MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (PREVIOUS RANK: #11)

Michigan is very hard to rank at this point. The team swam without Paul Powers and PJ Ransford at Winter Nationals, and both focused on Short Course Worlds instead. But the problems run deeper than missing two stars for one meet. There isn’t much support for sprint star Powers, and no Michigan relay currently ranks higher than 19th nationally. This postseason depends heavily on how well a young roster responds to taper.

#12: ARIZONA WILDCATS (PREVIOUS RANK: #14)

Some big swims at the Texas Hall of Fame Invite have ‘Zona trending up. Still a young roster, Arizona put together three sophomores and a junior in Texas to hit the 2nd-fastest 200 medley relay time in the NCAA. Sophomore Chatham Dobbs has already hit a lifetime-best in the 100 fly this season and has been just off of PRs in the 100 back and 50 free.

#11: LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (PREVIOUS RANK: #10)

Louisville’s got a nice, round roster and currently holds the #5 spot nationally in the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay. Plus, breaststroker Carlos Claverie is crushing it so far this season. Also keep an eye on Russian backstroker Grigory Tarasevich, who has put up his best swims in short course meters this year and should have time to drop at NCAAs.

#10: ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (PREVIOUS RANK: #7)

Into the top 10: Alabama has 4 relay A cuts to go along with a #2-ranked 400 free relay nationwide. The Crimson Tide is a little bit lighter on individual scorers at the moment, but some of that is a product of a very early midseason rest meet. Key to a successful postseason is getting Connor Oslin swimming back to the insane levels at which he finished last year, along with keeping the momentum of breakout junior Luke Kaliszak going. Kaliszak currently ranks 2nd in the NCAA in the 100 back and hit lifetime-bests in that event and the 50 free at the Georgia Tech Invite in November.

#9: INDIANA HOOSIERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #6)

Indiana started out red-hot, but has been a little more low-key lately with star freestyler Blake Pieroni focusing on short course meters and the Short Course World Championships. Swimming without Pieroni at U.S. Nationals, Indiana has a number of relays in NCAA scoring range but has yet to hit an NCAA relay A cut. That means the Hoosiers will have to hit Big Tens a little harder to qualify its relays for the big show – something that shouldn’t be challenging with Pieroni back in the fold. Flyer/IMer Vinicius Lanza has maintained momentum in his first full season with the team.

#8: MISSOURI TIGERS (PREVIOUS RANK: #8)

Missouri has a likely NCAA champ in breaststroker Fabian Schwingenschlogl, who won the 100 last year and leads all swimmers this season by more than a second. Though he’s unlikely to get past Will Licon for the 200 title, Schwingenschlogl should score a boatload of points there as well, and he makes Mizzou’s medley relays instant factors in a league where many top programs are missing a true star breaststroke leg. Andrew Sansoucie has been the breakout star in the butterfly races, and the Tigers’ 4 relay A cuts keep them from dropping in the ranks even as other programs have gone through their midseason rest meets after Missouri’s early focus meet.

#7: USC TROJANS (PREVIOUS RANK: #13)

The Trojans make a charge in our ranks on the strength of some big swims at the Texas Hall of Fame Invite. Compared to the teams above them, USC has a lot less individual swimmers ranked in the NCAA’s top 16, but are strong in the sprints, which have big relay significance. USC has A cuts in 4 of 5 relays currently and rank inside the top 8 in every single relay. Santo Condorelli is back and swimming great, but probably has even more time to drop if his long course improvements over the past year are taken into consideration. Carsten Vissering sits #2 nationwide in a 100 breaststroke race that should be open to hopeful point-scorers.

#6: STANFORD CARDINAL (PREVIOUS RANK: #12)

Stanford makes the biggest leap of any top 10 program this week (tied with USC) after a huge performance at the Texas Hall of Fame Invite. The distance dominance many envisioned after a targeted recruiting effort is starting to come to fruition, as Stanford has three swimmers each ranked in the top 10 in the 500 and 1650 frees. Freshmen Grant Shoults and True Sweetser lead the way there. But Stanford is also impressing in the IMs with four 200 IMers and three 400 IMers ranked inside the NCAA’s top 16. That does include some short course meter conversions from Abrahm DeVine (who competed at Short Course Worlds), but two NCAA scoring swims a year ago mean DeVine has already proven he can translate that speed to yards.

#5: FLORIDA GATORS (PREVIOUS RANK: #5)

Caeleb Dressel and Maxime Rooney are a dynamic duo, and account for 5 of Florida’s 7 times currently ranked in the top 8 in the NCAA. Meanwhile Mark Szaranek and Jan Switkowski are an IM duo of their own and currently leading a Florida IM attack that has 5 swims in NCAA scoring position (though one is Dressel’s 200 IM which is an unlikely NCAA entry). The problem for Florida is that things run dry in between those two disciplines. The team currently has no backstrokers or breaststrokers ranked in the top 16, and that weakness is also sinking the team’s medley relays. Florida has reverted to using Dressel as its medley relay breaststroker, getting rid of a potential 17-second and 39-second anchor leg and leaving coach Gregg Troy shouting “A breaststroker, a breaststroker! My kingdom for a breaststroker!”

#4: GEORGIA BULLDOGS (PREVIOUS RANK: #4)

Georgia remains #4 since our last ranking, but that certainly doesn’t suggest they aren’t moving forward. A great home invite only proved how dominant the Bulldogs are in the IM and longer stroke races – Georgia currently has three swimmers ranked inside the NCAA’s top 16 in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly. The return of Chase Kalisz has been a massive boost, and Kalisz is also looking like a top-shelf 200 breaststroker in addition to his IM prowess. Keep an eye on freshman Javier Acevedo, who hasn’t competed much and still appears to be adjusting to short course yards but could be the sprint weapon Georgia needs to fight for a high spot at NCAAs.

#3: NC STATE (PREVIOUS RANK: #1)

Tough call here between NC State and Texas for 2nd. In terms of pure times and NCAA ranks, Texas has the edge, but NC State has competed better than any other team in the nation this year, walloping a somewhat weakened Texas roster in a dual meet back in November. Surprisingly enough, NC State doesn’t stack up as dominant in the sprint freestyles as you’d expect, with just the 9th-best 200 free relay and 8th-best 400 free relay in the NCAA this year. But Ryan Held is the real deal and only getting better, and there’s little doubt the sprinters will come around for the Wolfpack, which has built its program on a surplus of speed.

#2: TEXAS (PREVIOUS RANK: #2)

Let’s make this clear up front: Texas still feels like the NCAA title favorites, and this ranking isn’t meant as a slight. But we still haven’t seen a full-power Longhorn crew compete yet this year, and it’s hard to rank the ‘Horns much higher until we have a better idea how some of their studs are swimming. Multi-time NCAA champ Joseph Schooling has barely competed and All-American Ryan Harty hasn’t raced at all. Still, Texas has plenty of firepower already to earn the #2 bid despite a dual meet loss to NC State in late 2016. Jack Conger and Will Licon look great, as do Townley Haas and Clark Smith, plus the Longhorns have the nation’s fastest 200 free relay this year, and that’s without Schooling, the fastest split on the team’s NCAA champion relay from last year.

#1: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (PREVIOUS RANK: #3)

A great Georgia Invite performance boosts Cal up to #1 in our ranks. The Golden Bears are the only team nationwide to have A cuts in all 5 relays and currently rank #1 in 3 of 5 relay events. In national rankings, they’ve also got at least one swimmer inside the top 8 in every single event outside of the 500 freestyle. Ryan Murphy is still a massive game-changer in the backstrokes and medley relays, Andrew Seliskar is beginning to look every bit the star he was recruited to be and freshman Michael Jensen has been a revelation.

Mike Thomas And The Bears Begin The Spring Season This Weekend In Arizona (Tim Binning)

BERKELEY - The Cal men's swimming team kicks off its spring season with a trip to Arizona as the Bears kick off a run of four-straight Pac-12 dual meets by taking on Arizona and Arizona State. Competition begins Friday at 1 p.m. against the Wildcats and continues Saturday at 11 a.m. against the Sun Devils. Saturday's meet in Tempe will be streamed live by Arizona State.

A strong fall season ended with the Bears earning the No. 1 national ranking from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The honor came in large part from a standout team performance at the Georgia Fall Invitational where Cal won every relay en route to the team title. Senior Ryan Murphy was particularly integral and was awarded the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month award after winning seven of the eight races he competed in.

Murphy wasn't the only individual standout for the Bears in Georgia. Sophomore Andrew Seliskar swam to NCAA "A" qualifying times in both the 200 fly and 400 IM while freshman Pawel Sendyk was just one-one hundreth shy of the A time in the 50 free. Nick Norman (1,650 free), Hunter Cobleigh (200 breast), Justin Lynch (100 fly) and Michael Jensen (200 free) also scored individual wins. Cal owns the nation's fastest time in the 200 and 400 medley relays as well as the 400 free relay heading into the weekend.

LAST TIME OUT
With wins in every relay as well as seven individual victories, Cal cruised to a dominant showing in winning the team title at the Georgia Fall Invitational. The Bears' score of 859 outdistanced the host Bulldogs, who finished second at 710. The meet put a cap on a quiet fall campaign for Cal, which also scored a dual meet win over Pacific and enjoyed several good swims at the Pacific Invitational as well as a good team performance against Stanford in the Triple Distance format.

DIVING IN
Freshman diver Connor Callahan made his first mark as a Golden Bear at the Bruin Invitational, placing second on the platform on Jan. 15. The Cary, N.C. native capped a solid weekend in Los Angeles with that performance but also dove to a fourth-place finish in the 3-meter. His score in both the 3-meter and platform events achieved Zone qualifying times in just his second collegiate competition.

ABOUT ARIZONA
The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 2-1 dual meet record after earning fall wins over Hawai'i and Utah. Their lone loss came on Nov. 5 in a 165-129 decision against USC.
Arizona competed at the Texas Invitational to close out the fall and achieved a host of NCAA "B" standards during four days in Austin. Sophomore Chatham Dobbs has been a key contributor so far this season and holds the team's top times in the 50 free and 100 fly as well as being part of four Wildcat relays.
Cal and Arizona also met to open the spring season in 2015 with the Bears earning a 164.5-118.5 victory in Berkeley.
ABOUT ARIZONA STATE
The Sun Devils get their spring season started with a perfect 4-0 dual meet record thanks to wins over Utah, BYU, Denver and USC. A 156.50-142.50 win over the Trojans served as a highlight of the fall dual slate.
ASU also competed at the Art Adamson Invitational and came away with the team title, scoring 965.5 points to beat second-place Texas A&M which had 917.5. Senior Richard Bohus led the way, breaking school records in both the 100 and 200 back.
Cal rolled to a 183-107 Senior Day win over Arizona State in 2015.
ON DECK
The Bears return to Berkeley for their final two dual meets of the season. USC comes to town on Feb. 3 for a 2 p.m. showdown at Spieker Aquatics Complex. On Feb. 18, Cal hosts Stanford on Senior Day for the Golden Bears and the quintet of Cobleigh, Jonathan Fiepke, Long Gutierrez, Murphy and Dillon Williams will swim collegiately for the final time in front of home fans.

Long Gutierrez Won Two Individual Events And Swam On A Top Relay Friday Vs. Arizona (Tim Binning)

TUCSON, Ariz. Racing for the first time since December and removed by only a few weeks from training at altitude, the Cal men's swimming team returned to competition in style as the Bears posted the top time in every event to score a 161-113 victory over Arizona in a Pac-12 dual meet in Tucson.

Cal, which improved to 2-0 in dual meets in 2016-17, didn't wait long to find its rhythm as the No. 1-ranked Bears kicked off the second half of their collegiate season. The team of Ryan Murphy, Connor Hoppe, Justin Lynch and Pawel Sendyk stopped the clock in 1:27.67 to win the 200-yard medley relay and beat teammates Mike Thomas, Carson Sand, Matthew Josa and Michael Jensen, who finished second.

Success carried into the distance freestyle as Ryan Kao and Ken Takahashi combined to finish 1-2 in the 1,000 freestyle. Kao's winning time of 9:23.76 is a season-best for the junior. The distance shortened with the 200 free but Cal teammates again battled for the win as senior Long Gutierrez finished in 1:36.62 to place just ahead of Murphy and Kyle Coan.

Josa found himself in the winner's circle in his first meet as a Golden Bear, clocking a time of 48.97 to lead a trio of Bears Thomas and freshman Andy Song included in the 100 backstroke. Senior Hunter Cobleigh followed with the first of two wins on the day, out-touching Hoppe to win the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.88. That pair battled again in the 200 breast and again Cobleigh prevailed with a time of 1:59.00 but this time fellow Golden Bear Carson Sand got into the mix, narrowly pulling into the wall for second ahead of Hoppe.

Sophomore Andrew Seliskar picked up his first win of the day with a time of 1:45.67 in the 200 butterfly and returned to the pool near the end of the meet to swim the 200 IM in a top time of 1:47.67. Lynch and Josa finished 1-2 in the 100 fly while Murphy competed in one backstroke event Friday, cruising to a six-second win with a time of 1:43.25 in the 200.

The Bears proved proficient in the sprint freestyle events as well, showcasing a bit of their youth as well as some veteran speed. A pair of freshmen, Jensen and Sendyk pulled away in the 50 free with Jensen getting the win in 20.09. Gutierrez added some experience to the mix as the senior finished in 43.71 to finish just ahead of Jensen and win the 100 free.

Sophomore Nick Norman and freshman Andy Song made it a distance freestyle sweep for the Bears as Norman won the 500 free in a time of 4:29.12 and Song placed second ahead of four Wildcats. Cal also earned its share of points in diving as freshman Connor Callahan continued a strong stretch of competition with wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter. In both cases, Callahan set a season-best in scoring, recording a mark of 314.48 in the 1-meter and 346.65 in the 3-meter.

The Bears wrapped up their day with a strong performance in the 400 free relay as the team of Gutierrez, Dillon Williams, Josa and Lynch finished in 2:58.96 to touch the wall first.

Cal won't wait long to jump back in the water. The Bears head to Tempe on Saturday for an 11 a.m. showdown with Arizona State. The meet will be streamed live through Pac-12.com and the Sun Devils' website, TheSunDevils.com.

Andrew Seliskar Recorded The Top Time In Three Races Saturday At ASU (Tim Binning)

TEMPE, Ariz. For the second day in a row, the Cal men's swimming and diving team touched the wall first in each race and that translated to another emphatic dual meet victory as the Bears beat Arizona State 160-130 to win their second dual meet in as many days.

One day after earning a win at Arizona, No. 1-ranked Cal (3-0) kept its momentum going against a No. 12-ranked Arizona State squad swimming its final home meet of 2016-17. High winds and chilly temperatures didn't deter the Bears from getting off to a good start as Ryan Murphy provided a big lead after the backstroke leg and Hunter Cobleigh, Justin Lynch and Long Gutierrez kept right on rolling to a time of 3:09.67 and a win in the 400-yard medley relay.

Sophomore Nick Norman got his day started with a competitive effort in the 1,000 freestyle, battling Arizona State's Benjamin Olszewski throughout but eventually picking up the win with a time of 9:14.05. The 200 free was a similarly close affair, but this time it was a pair of Bears fighting for the win as Gutierrez pulled into the lead late to edge Jensen with a time of 1:35.34. Ryan Kao placed third and Kyle Coan touched fourth to wrap up a Cal sweep.

Murphy picked up the first of two backstroke wins with a dominant effort in the 100, cruising to a time of 46.42. He earned a similarly impressive victory in the 200 with a time of 1:41.22 later in the day and set a pool record in the process, eclipsing the mark of 1:41.84 set by ASU's Barkley Perry in 2016.

A trio of Bears battled through the breaststroke events with Connor Hoppe picking up the win in the 100, Andrew Seliskar taking the 200 and Hunter Cobleigh placing second in both. A similar scenario played out in the butterfly with a good dual between Seliskar and Matthew Josa giving way to a Seliskar win in the 200 and Josa coming back to outduel Lynch for a win in the 100.

Jensen continued a standout freshman campaign with more success in the sprint freestyle as the native of Upper Dublin, Pa. won the 50 for the second-straight day and added a victory in the 100 as well. The 500 free provided some of the day's more exciting racing as Kao overtook ASU's Olszewski in the final 50 yards to win with a time of 4:28.23.

After the final break of the day, Seliskar put the finishing touches on a big day with a dominant top time of 3:50.88 in the 400 individual medley. A battle between Bears capped a 1-2-3 finish as freshman Jack Xie outdueled Ken Takahashi for second. The day closed with another strong relay performance as Jensen, Murphy, Pawel Sendyk and Josa earned the top time of 1:18.99.

Conor Callahan added points for the Bears with a pair of third-place finishes in diving but the freshman continued to show his progress as he set season-highs with a score of 355.05 in the 1-meter and 382.65 in the 3-meter.

Cal returns to action at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Feb. 3 when the Bears host USC at 2 p.m. The 2016-17 dual meet season comes to a close on Feb. 18 when Cal hosts Stanford at noon. That meet will also serve as Senior Day and the final prep meet for the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

The Sun Devil swim and dive teams hosted the top-ranked Cal men and sixth-ranked Cal women in their final home dual of the season, honoring their senior class prior to the day's meet.

"Against Stanford, we stack up ok. Against Cal, we don't stack up yet but the good news is that they are the best team in the country; there aren't any teams better than them. It's a long journey to get to that level. They didn't get there overnight and we aren't going to get there overnight. Our meet against them this year was way better than the one last year, so that's what we have to look at to make sure we're improving year-to-year."

By Lander Eichholzer, Swimming World College Intern.

The NCAA men's swimming and diving championships are roughly two months away, meaning it's not too soon to take a look at which teams will battle for a National Championship in the coming weeks. Texas, California and North Carolina State have been impressive through the first month of 2017, but there is plenty of quick swimming on the horizon.

The Cal Golden Bears are lead by workhorse Ryan Murphy, the premier backstroker in the world. Murphy leads the nation in the 100 and 200 backstroke by wide margins and could contend in an event like the 200 IM, where he was third at NCAAs last year. If Murphy can upset Texas star Will Licon in the 200 IM, that could be vital points in what looks like a much closer meet this season.

Sprinter Pawel Sendyk has been a revelation for the Golden Bears, sitting third in the NCAA in the 50 freestyle after not having a point scored in that event a year ago. Even though Sendyk does not show great range to the 100 freestyle, he should score in the top 8 in the 50 and provide vital relay legs.

I traveled to Phoenix to watch the Bears take on the ASU Sun Devils on a cool and windy Sat afternoon. The ASU swim venue was pretty nice and the stands were surprisingly full on senior day for the ASU squad. There was a small but vocal group of Cal supporters, including 2017 uber-recruit Ryan Hoffer in Cal tee and hoodie.

Nice to see Matt Josa competing for the Bears. Matt looked good swimming the 100/200 fly events in Tempe, winning the 100 fly, with Justin Lynch taking 2nd and finishing 2nd to a fast closing Andrew Seliskar in the 200 fly. In Tucson the day before, Matt also swam the faster fly leg in the 200 medley relay.

I am guessing that Josa’s individual event line up will be 200 IM, 100 Fly and 200 Fly at NCAAs, and will be in the mix for the fly legs on our medley relays. Great addition to the squad.

After sitting out the Fall slate, Long Gutierrez was back in the pool winning the 200 free, and finishing 3rd in the 100 free. Long missed the Georgia Invite and is still somewhat outside of an NCAA invite time, but I am optimistic he can achieve a top 28 event time (200 free?) without a taper before NCAAs.

The Bears were not introduced at the beginning of the meet but I assume the travel squad is somewhat smaller than the full roster. A number of freshmen Bears did not compete including ‘Aukai Lileikis, Shane Forker, Karl Arvidsson and Ivan Grigorishin. Other swimmers who did not post included Silverthorn, Fiepke , Stevens and Whittle. Connor Green did not swim and a parent confirmed he has retired for health reasons.

Two more chances to see Ryan Murphy swim competitively for Cal at Spieker, starting with USC on Feb. 3rd.

Duke women beat UNC for first time ever; Duke men beat UNC for the first time since 1939. Duke men's team is unfunded. Drumbeat to bring UNC alum Yuri back to save the program will only grow louder. Would blow, but better Yuri @ UNC than on the farm.

Cal legacy/KB BFF Alyssa Marsh had in season 50 Free/100 Fly times which were in the ballpark of fellow legacy Maddie Murphy's times. In-state tuition for the win.

USC rolls into Berkeley with a star-studded roster featuring Dylan Carter, Santo Condorelli, Reed Malone, Ralf Tribuntsov and Carsten Vissering. They have a top guy in most disciplines, but I expect Cal’s depth in free sprints, and the 200 breast, IM and fly to contribute to the Bear’s avenging last year’s one point loss at SC.

Featured races:
1)Condorelli, Carter and Tribuntsov versus Sendyk, Jensen and Lynch in free sprints.

2)Vissering and Mario Koenigsperger versus Hoppe, Sand and Cobleigh in breast races.

3)Carter and Alex Valente vs. Josa, Lynch, Thomas and Seliskar in fly events.

4)200 free relay. Should be a barn-burner. Last year USC beat Cal by.04 seconds in this final event of the meet to grab the win. They come into today’s meet with the #2 time in the country, ahead of 3rd place Cal.

Hope the rain holds off, but I will be there in any case.

If revenge is a dish best served cold, then the Bears had the appropriate conditions as Cal avenged last year's one point loss at SC, by walloping the Trojan's on a cold and wet afternoon in Berkeley. The official score of 177-109 did not reflect the total domination as Cal swam and won the last two events but swam both as exhibitions.

The meet opened with a close Cal win in the 200 medlay relay, mainly on the back of Ryan Murphy's opening leg. Cal's A squad featured Murphy, Lynch, Hoppe and Sendyk. SC's A squad of Tribuntsov, Vissering, Carter and Condorelli (no seniors btw) actually had faster times on 3 of the 4 legs.

Cal's 1-2 finish by Nick Norman and Ryan Kao in the 1000 free was a pleasant surprise but it was the 3rd event of the day, the 200 Yard Freestyle that let the Troy fans know they were in for a long afternoon. The Trojan’s line up included Trinidad & Tobago Olympian Dylan Carter who currently has an A cut and the fastest event time so far this year, as well as the defending Pac 12 champion in the 200 free, Reed Malone. But it was Long Gutierrez, competing for only the 3rd time this season who led from start to finish, with freshman Michael Jensen holding off Carter to take 2nd. Kyle Coan also closed quickly to finish a point scoring 5th ahead of Malone.

The 100 back and 100 breast went according to scrip with Ryan Murphy easily winning the 100 back, and SC’s breast phenom Vissering finishing ahead of Hoppe, Cobleigh and Sand. I expected Cal to show well in the 200 fly, with Andrew Seliskar and Mike Thomas holding top 10 times and the Bear’s did not disappoint with Jack Xie contributing to a top three sweep.

After a close win by Justin Lynch in the 50 free over Santo Condorelli, there was the normal 20 minute break and when the competition continued, the stage was set for another featured race, the 100 Yard Freestyle. SC entered Condorelli and Grissom, who finished 2nd and third in the 50 free, but Dylan Carter did not post. Cal’s hopes appeared to rest with Mike Jensen, Pawel Sendyk and Long Gutierrez, but it was smoke from lane 8 as senior Dillon Williams had the emotional swim of the meet (to the great joy of his mother Susan in the stands) to win the event in a stunning 1-2-3-4 Bear finish. For the condoms, it was “turn out the lights, the party’s over…”

From the line-ups the Bears put together and the focus shown in all of the events, it appeared clear to me that Durden and staff wanted an appropriate response to last year’s upset, and the team responded. Also, a nod to Connor Callahan who took a 1st and 2nd in the two diving events.

Although I expect USC to swim much faster at Pac 12’s they do not appear to have the depth or talent to “stick” with the men’s elite teams, Cal and Texas, no matter what Salo thinks.

Great write ups. Thanks, all y'all.

Really surprised at how weak both of Salo's teams are in distance and middle distance. Bear Bros destroyed the Condoms in distance even with Jarardan's retirement. 'SC assistant Catherine Vogt is allegedly a great open water/distance coach, but results haven't been there thus far this season. Yuri & Vogt are both UNC grads, so wouldn't be too surprised to see either/both return to coach UNC, but would hate to lose Yuri.

Finn's battled injuries, so hopefully he's blueshirting and getting healthy. Callahan looks promising on spring boards. Two more years of Finn on platform and Connor on spring boards would work.

Would like to see Bears crack LSJU again for their many crimes against humanity, but team does have a shot to win another NCAA title this year even against the 'Whorn juggernaut. Wouldn't mind training hard through LSJU and PACs and being all in on NCAAs.

Was nice to meet Dgong at the meet. He gave a nice synopsis here so I won't comment except to say I expected so much more from USC, but maybe they are planning to have a better showing against Stanford today. We will see.

BTW, if you were not at the meet, it not only was cold and rainy at times, but we also had strong winds through out the day. It was so bad that the swimmers hovered under and entrance way to the locker room and came out when their event was to start. And, to add to that, our announcer did not give out the lanes and swimmers names until they were in the water except the 50 free!

Connor's development has been a revelation for Bears, esp as a frosh! Similarly Phoebe's progress has been very encouraging on the women's side...maybe with further improvements there, we won't always have to automatically assume conceding valuable diving points to our rivals going forward... :p

Hope you're right about Finn giving us 2 more years! He's definitely around as can be seen from this photo of the diving squad taken on 29 Jan:

Substitute "Furdette tree stumps" for "'Whorn juggernaut", and that sentiment could almost apply to Teri's team as well :p There are admittedly weaknesses in a greater number of areas there, in spite of some amazing talent for our women.

At any rate, agree with sucking it up with a potential loss @ Spieker v. the Furd the next couple of weekends, and even @ Pac-12s (reckon not resting much for the top swimmers whilst aiming to achieve qualifying cuts for those on the edge easily takes precedence over going all out for the conference title) - if that would lead to both of our squads going lights out @ NCAAs to possibly win it all!

I certainly didn't expect the easy Cal wins in the 200/500/1000 free races given the past performances by Furtek (in last year's dual he won both the 500 and 1000, and placed 6th in both the 500 and 1650 at Pac 12s), and Reed Malone (in last year's dual he won the 200 and finished 2nd in the 200, and won both the 500 and 200 frees at Pac 12s). Also, returning Olympian Dylan Carter has been swimming fast in season. I do not know what to think about Malone's and Furtek's 2016/2017 performances to date, but I will reserve judgement until Pac 12s, where I expect better results from the SC mid-distance and distance group, but Stanford appears to be the big dog in the distance free events.

I do expect most of the team to be in training through the Stanford meet and Pac 12s. The only swimmers currently on the bubble for NCAA qualification are 'Aukai Lileikis (#31 in the 100 free,#38 in 200 free), who hasn't competed since the UGA Fall Invite and Matt Whittle (#29 in 200 breast). Beyond those two, I would think that Andy Song and Jack Xie would need to rest for Pac 12s for qualifying times.

Long Gutierrez currently holds the 29th best time in the 200 free, but at least 4 swimmers ahead of him (Seliskar, Conger, Dressel, Held) will likely pass on the event.

Matt Josa has yet to swim a top 28 swim in yards, but holds the 6th best time in the 100 fly if his Fina SCM time can be used for NCAA purposes.

Seliskar truly is a stud. An IMer who can swim anything and readily takes on the tough, thankless events (200 Fly/Breast) in dual meets. Can fill in where required on multiple relays. Excellent student as well.

"$C got beaten again today down on the Farm, but by a slightly smaller margin than at the hands of the Bear Bros: 179-121"

Taking into account the Bears swam exhibitions in the last two events (which they had the fastest times), and the SC A medley relay team was DQ'd in the Stanford meet, the Bear's beatdown of SC was more impressive. The only Card relay team that can hang with the Bears is their 800 free that plays into their mid-distance free strength.

Does anyone know what the 'Aukai Lileikis and Quah Zheng Wen statuses are? Lileikis swam at the open Cal invitational unattached, so maybe an eligibility issue but still with the team? And is there any update on Quah's NCAA eligibility? If neither compete that's some terrible luck with with eligibility and attrition, along with Gwo, Vergani, and Green.

Lileikis had a couple of nice swims at the Georgia Fall meet, but hasn't competed in a team event since. I thought it might be injury related but I had missed that he had competed unattached at the Cal Invite. I was at the SC meet and the team was introduced but I do not recall if 'Aukai was announced (Connor Green was not announced which , to me, confirmed his retirement). I plan on attending the final home meet with Stanford and see if I can get any info on Lileikis.

Quah is registered and attending classes and he may have been at the meet as a spectator on the pool deck. His eligibility is being decided by the NCAA, and as far and as I know, no decision has been made public. With his prior gig as an "ambassador" for Liberty Insurance (http://www.prischew.com/sports/liberty-insurances-new-brand-ambassador-swimmer-quah-zheng-wen-is-confident-for-rio-2016-olympics/) I remain hopeful but not optimistic about a favorable decision.

Although the recruitment of Matt Josa may have had nothing to do with Gwo and Vergani, the addition of the Queens University transfer, the emergence of Pawel Sendyk and Mike Jensen and the commitment of Ryan Hoffer more than offset the loss of the highly regarded sprinters.
