Sorry UAC thought I'll get it started after I found this article on Ryan Young, from BerkeleyHaas newsletter

Actually massively appreciate your help & initiative there, OBear - thx for that great article too

Been sort of swamped at me end so a mite slooooow in catching up with new developments and sharing them over here...

Anyhoo, brilliant to see Murph back (Pebs too) and now a bit of a celebrity after all his Rio achievements - reckon Murphy would have been even more talked about earlier on if he hadn't just happened to share his freshman year with a certain superstar on the women's side

The team will be bolstered by a killer froski group that includes a studly transfer in Josa (see SwimSwam's rating below, written by a Furdie swim alumnus), which was much discussed on the recruits thread here:

Ranking the 2016 Men's NCAA Recruiting Classes: #1-4

Matthew Josa recently announced he's joining a loaded class in Berkeley this fall

#1: California Golden Bears

Top-tier additions:  Matthew Josa (transfer Queens), #2 Michael Jensen, #5 Jack Xie, #10 Andrea Vergani, #11 Ethan Young, #17 Albert Gwo, Andy Song An, Pawel Sendyk, 'Aukai Lileikis, Karl Arvidsson, Shane Forker

Holy moly, this group. Even before Matthew Josa announced he was transferring to Cal last week, the Bears far and away had the top class in the country. The class by the numbers:
5 the number of swimmers who are 20.0/44.0 or faster in both the 50 and 100 freestyle (not including Pawel Sendyk, who's been 23.1/50.2 in long course meters)
◦ Matthew Josa 19.9/42.7
◦ Michael Jensen 19.8/42.7
◦ 'Aukai Lileikis 19.9/43.6
◦ Albert Gwo 19.9/44.0
◦ Andrea Vergani 20.0/43.9
5 the number of swimmers who are under 48 seconds in the 100 back or 100 fly
◦ Josa 44.9/1:43.0 flyer
◦ Jensen 47.3 100 fly
◦ Jack Xie 46.7/1:45.8 flyer
◦ Ethan Young 21.6/46.7/1:43.0 backstroker
◦ Andy Song An 47.6/1:45.8 backstroker
2 breaststrokers at 55.0/2:00.0 or better (Xie at 54.9/1:59.4, Karl Arvidsson at 55.0/1:59.9)
3 200 freestylers under 1:35 (Jensen at 1:33.9, Lileikis at 1:34.8, Josa at 1:34.2)
There's at least another half-dozen other mind-blowing facts, but this gives you an idea. This class was great before adding Josa, and now, with two years of a guy who has already broken 45 seconds in the 100 fly and 1:42 in the 200 IM, it's all-time great. There's eleven names here, and even the "weaker" ones would be among the best in just about every other class; Arvidsson is a 55.0/1:59.9 breaststroker, and Shane Forker is a 4:24.5/9:11.2/15:21 freestyler.

Simply put, these guys really help even out the clear edge that the Texas Longhorns have had the past two seasons. It may not happen next year (Texas is returning nearly every critical piece), but the Bears are in line to bring the title back to Berkeley soon enough.

He's also not listed in the UC Berkeley directory; is he coming in the Spring semester, or not at all?

Since the 2016-2017 schedule hasn't been posted, all of the below is speculation for discussion ....

A post-Olympic season is always filled with excitement and questions. It's an opportunity to refocus on short course, but also an opportunity to jump onto the U.S. National Team in long course due to post-Olympic retirements by veterans. How will that play out for our men's team?

I think the men's team will go all out to try to win the NCAA team title. It's Murphy's last year, and he's carried the team for the past three. With Josa on board, we now have another top sprint stroker who could co-star on four relays and A final in three individual events. Everyone else will need to step up and score in at least 1-2 events (especially distance, where you can go all out in a single swim, rather than try to guess on a prelim time that'll make it through.) If the depth comes through along with the expected star power, we can do it. Seliskar scored in 3 A finals last year. Gutierrez, Hoppe, and Lynch were key on relays and also scored last year; can they break through to A finals this year? Will former Jr. and Sr. National Teamers (Burns, Green, Thomas) score this year; they are so talented and I know they want to do well. So many more that could be mentioned ....

Those of you that go to dual meets at Spieker, please report back for the benefit of us that live out of town --- thanks!

For Prenot and Pebley that graduated last year, will they stay at Cal to train for the next Olympics? It looks like they still need to finish their degrees over the next year, but after that? I can still see Prenot being motivated to train/mentor Seliskar and the younger IMers/breaststrokers, and Pebley with the younger backstrokers, but it's a rare swimmer like Adrian or Coughlin that stays at Cal their entire career. Shields had mentioned before (in an interview on InsideSwim) that he didn't really have a set training group throughout the year. You'd think with Lynch and Gutierrez that the fly group would be there, but maybe not. With Josa coming alongside, that might change too for Shields.

Finally, for Murphy, the Olympics were a dream meet for him, and should hopefully set him up nicely for a pro career after NCAAs. How will he approach this season? Will he focus on graduating from Haas in the spring and prioritize the collegiate season? Will he continue to build his international credentials by participating in the World Short Course championships in Toronto in December in lieu of (or in addition to) whatever mid-season meet the team attends (I think that qualifying the relays to NCAAs is a big goal, so maybe not, but Josh Prenot went to Duel in the Pool last December to build up his international credentials.) Again, Pac-12 championships conflict with the Arena Pro Swim series meet, this year in Indianapolis (also the site of NCAAs in March and World Championship Trials in June), so will he skip them again to go to Indy instead? So many moving parts ....

Ditto. Really appreciate all the firsthand reports in the past from the helpful contributors who are still in the area, keep them coming, cheers! Even or especially the colour commentary + on deck observations of team dynamics etc, which are often more interesting than just eyeing sterile stats from a distance or reading up the sugar-coated official recaps, particularly when the dual isn't televised or streamed!

Love your enthusiasm that is grounded on a knowledgeable foundation! I really hope so too, and I think our Men's team do have a chance of derailing the Texas Juggernaut if everything comes together this season and everyone steps up. Or at the least, keeping it close and keeping UT honest all the way thru to the very end. Had originally been resigned to expecting another couple of seasons before we could realistically reclaim the crown from the Horns - but feeling a mite more optimistic for the shorter term after digesting your sound reasons for the Bears having a decent shot as soon as this year...thank you very much for rekindling my hopes m8!

So glad to see Ryan back on campus and school. He is such a polite and endearing young man so it will be interesting to see how he handles his notoriety with students and swim fans his final year at Cal. Will there be lines of youngsters seeking his autograph at the home meets ala what Missy went through? Maybe not so much as he is somewhat reserved and most seemingly a person who doesn't seek the limelight.

He always made comments on how he appreciated the support from his family, and I loved seeing his parents response on television right after Ryan won his races.

And, yes, Beaver, I, and hopefully other Cal fans like me who live close to the Cal campus, will keep you posted starting this Fall with swim meets at Spieker.

BTW, the new pool is looking pretty nice to me. Especially on the Bancroft side of the facility. I am terrible with cameras. I am sure others here can submit the latest pictures.

The new roster is up. (Should be converted over to the main roster page once they get the new pictures from ISI uploaded.)

Some thoughts on new members of the team:
 • As previously mentioned, Andrea Vergani (previous commit from Italy/Bolles School) is not listed on the roster. Does anyone know if he decided to go elsewhere?
 • We have instead a new international freshman, Ivan Grigorishin from Ukraine/Moscow 57. Looks promising.
 • We also have an intriguing water polo convert, Spencer Farrar, who transferred this year from UCLA.
 • Finally, we have a diver, Connor Callahan, from the well-known Duke Diving Club, who produced numerous OT finalists, such as Abby Johnston, Jordan Windle, and Toby Stanley. Looks like he's a good springboard diver (then again, Finn Scribbick was also more known as a springboard diver before his platform breakthrough at Cal.)
 • One question about the diving is whether many of the incoming freshmen were recruited by Mulzet, and were surprised by the coaching change. It's hard to get out of an LOI once signed. I hope these freshmen love it at Cal and will stay with the program.

Also, the schedule isn't officially yet listed on Calbears.com. However, the calendar file that you can sync to Outlook/Google Calendar/iCal/etc. has the following (using UAC's format). So, mark October 7th on your calendars for the first home meet.

Fri, 7 Oct Pacific @ Berkeley, CA (1:00 p.m.)

Fri, 21 Oct Pacific Invitational @ Stockton, CA (7:00 p.m.)

Wed, 2 Nov Stanford (Triple Distance Meet) @ Stanford, CA (2:00 pm)

2-4 Dec Georgia Fall Invitational @ Athens, GA

Fri, 20 Jan Arizona @ Tucson, AZ (unconfirmed)

Sat, 21 Jan Arizona State @ Tempe, AZ (12:00 p.m.)

Fri, 3 Feb USC @ Berkeley, CA (2:00 p.m.)

Sat, 18 Feb Stanford @ Berkeley, CA

1-4 Mar Pac-12 Championships @ Federal Way, WA

22-25 Mar NCAA Division 1 Championships @ IUPUI, IN

I think he's on campus (he's listed in the UC Berkeley Directory), but the Athletics database is probably incomplete. (Same situation with Maddie Murphy on the women's team.) Maybe that's why they hide the new roster page for a few days, to spot any errors and correct them before the page is promoted.

Had noticed Spencer when he had made several appearances on the field during the pre-game festivities at the home opener v. the Horns (with a spot of help from Abbey apparently lol), and noted that he played water polo player for the Bruins last year in his freshman year, but hadn't realised at the time that he's now on Dave's team!

A couple of other observations:

1) Janardin Burns has apparently decided not to swim his final his final year of eligibility. His parents told me last year that Janardin was focusing on academics. Good for him.
Janardin scored points at Pac 12s last year and competed at NCAAs in the distant free events.

2) David Puczkowski who scored in the 100 back and 200 back at Pac 12s is not listed on the roster. Perhaps this is just a roster error, but if not, with the graduation of Jacob Pebley and Jermie DeZwirek we lose backstroke depth if David has moved on.

3) Harrison Thai who was on the 2015-2016 roster as a junior but did not swim is not listed on the 2016-2017 roster.

Thanks for the notes. I remember you mentioning that Janardan was applying to law school, and that training for the longer races took up too much time. I saw that he didn't swim at Trials, so maybe NCAAs was his final meet. Also, the senior class was hit hard by attrition ---- Janardan, Harrison, Sven Campbell.

However, David would be more surprising to me. He swam all summer through Trials, and was even interviewed on video (you can find these on the Cal Athletics Youtube) as part of the Trials series.

The men's team is large in numbers, and with limited scholarships available (9.9 total, spread among the 25+ team members), it's really hard to keep going in swimming when the academics and/or injuries start ramping up.

Dunno how highly recruited Connor was, but Durden's recruiting strategy for divers intrigues me. Men's teams have less scholly money than women's, but Durden's teams often overqualify for NCAAs and have left projected swim scorers home (in favor of relay swimmers).

With new diving facilities in place, makes sense for Teri to add divers since her team never approaches 18 swim qualifiers.

Durden's calculus is more difficult. Should probably spend every every two years to ensure always having a high end spring boarder and a platform diver on the team. Spring boarders are more valuable since they can potentially score 40 points @ NCAAs and only count 0.5 against the 18 cap.

Agreed. Cal academic demands are no joke, as well as normal swimmer's burn-out. Kyle Gornay was our top rated recruit in our 2014 but left the team after one year.

That's why I am so impressed by guys like Ryan Murphy, Josh Prenot* and Seth Stubblefield who have success at both athletics and academics.

* We are really going to miss Prenot. He was an NCAA stud.

I'm sharing some statistics from the 2013 through 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, in hopes that we'll gain some insight into how a title-winning team is constructed.

The basic facts are that 4,030 points are available for distribution throughout the meet. A finals placings are awarded as follows: 20-17-16-15-14-13-12-11. B finals placings are awarded as follows: 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Relays are scored double.

As a reminder, Cal placed:
 • 2013 - 2nd (to Michigan)
 • 2014 - 1st (over Texas)
 • 2015 - 2nd (to Texas)
 • 2016 - 2nd (to Texas)

During the last quad:
 • The winning team scored an average of 502 points. Of these, 326 points are individual and 176 points are relay. 14 scorers contributed to this total.
 • The second place team scored an average of 393 points. Of these, 245 points are individual and 148 points are relay. 12 scorers contributed to this total.
 • Although the men's team is restricted to a maximum of 9.9 scholarships, the top two teams have consistently brought ~17 swimmers and divers to the championship.

During Cal's 2014 title run:
 • 13 scorers contributed 289 individual points and 180 relay points.
 • 4 (Murphy, Prenot, Stubblefield, Katis) contributed the equivalent of 3 A final placings, for a total of 154 points.
 • 4 (Bagshaw, Tarczynski, Cox, Pebley) contributed the equivalent of 2 A final placings, for a total of 94 points.

During Cal's other three years, on average:
 • 11 scorers contributed a total of 240 individual points.
 • Team progressively (over the 4 years) relied more and more on 3-4 top scorers (going from 38% in 2013 to 82% in 2016 of all individual points scored)
 • One relay might be "sub-par" (e.g., B final appearance or DQ)
 • Michigan won in 2013 on the combined strength of distance + relays.
 • Texas won in 2015 and 2016 on the combined strength of diving + mid-tier scorers stepping up.

As an easy rule-of-thumb, a winning team needs about 300 individual points and 175 relay points. The ceiling for 5 A final relays is 200 points, and the floor is 110 points. I believe that this year, it is possible for us to do it if we have a full team of 18 swimmers/divers, distributed as follows:
 • 3 swimmers scoring >33 points each
 • 4 swimmers scoring 22-32 points each
 • 5 swimmers scoring 11-21 points each
 • 6 swimmers scoring some points

Naturally, the more swimmers that move up in categories, the better! We should also aim for at least top-3 finishes in every relay, with a couple of wins.

Feel free to chime in with your thoughts (or suggestions on additional stats to analyze).

The Bears will be capitalizing off a very talented freshman class this season, and look like they've got a ton of depth for the relays. After finishing 2nd to Texas the last 2 years in a row, they'll be looking to return to the top at NCAAs, but the Longhorns will be incredibly hard to beat. A boost from Cal's breaststrokers and distance freestylers would go a long way in helping them achieve that goal.

I think he's on campus (he's listed in the UC Berkeley Directory), but the Athletics database is probably incomplete. (Same situation with Maddie Murphy on the women's team.) Maybe that's why they hide the new roster page for a few days, to spot any errors and correct them before the page is promoted.

OK, something is definitely up with Albert Gwo. All summer, and even earlier this Fall, Albert Gwo was listed in the UC Berkeley (campus) directory and his Instagram bio had something about Cal swimming:

That means, at some point, he had completed registration papers at UC Berkeley. Something must have changed very recently. (For example, even Cierra Runge was listed in the UC Berkeley directory all last year, despite having already withdrawn from the university. She's not there any more.) Neither is Albert Gwo. And, his Instagram bio was recently updated to remove the UC Berkeley info.

What caused him to completely withdraw from school (this is different from a leave of absence)?

Hopefully someone planning to attend tomorrow's dual v. the Pacific Tigers can confirm Albert & Andrea's absences, maybe even ask someone from the men's team/coaching staff about this? (assuming they would be willing to divulge the details!)

Should be a great meet, get to check out all the exciting froskis, cheer on Murph & the seniors in their last season, etc.

Would love to stop by Spieker but unfortunately I'm no longer based in the Bay Area - dgong, longseeker, you guys going?

1) Janardin Burns has apparently decided not to swim his final his final year of eligibility. His parents told me last year that Janardin was focusing on academics. Good for him.
Janardin scored points at Pac 12s last year and competed at NCAAs in the distant free events.

SwimSwam late as usual, with even less info than dgong's inside scoop hehe

UAC,

I am planning to attend and will confirm roster questions. I am assuming Andrea has decided to remain in Italy and train with national team. With the size of the incoming class, 10 freshmen (including one diver and two internationals) and two transfers, the numbers do not add up to include Vergani.

Where's Albert?

Beaverbob's update re Albert Gwo also appears to confirm that Gwo's absence from the listed roster is more than an input glitch. However, his Facebook page still notes that he "studies at UC Berkeley" so there is still hope. My attempts to get Ben Enos to comment on Albert and Andrea failed but I would like to receive "official" confirmation regarding the final roster from anybody connected to the program. I am a donor, but not an insider.

I just find it amusing that with the men's opening home dual meet less than 24 hours away, there is no news capsule on Calbears.com.

The news is up now on Calbears.com as well as the Facebook page. The PDF press release confirms that Janardan Burns, Albert Gwo, David Puczkowski, Harrison Thai, and Andrea Vergani are not on the roster this year. So, that's that.

Team photos now on ISI Photos (UAC, care to comment on the lighting? I actually think the lens used might have been too wide ....)

Also, I miss the video previews of every meet, which were posted in years past. Since Cal Athletics's media rights are transitioning from IMG College to Learfield, maybe there is a different digital media strategy coming into play soon.

OK, because it's now been posted publicly on Instagram:

Ryan Murphy and Jonathan Fiepke won't be swimming in today's meet against UOP. They are in Knoxville for Seth Stubblefield's wedding this weekend. Ryan is a groomsman, along with Adam Hinshaw. Congratulations again to Seth and Lauren.

I'm sure the meet will be great this afternoon. Can't wait to hear dgong and others' on-deck reports, and analyze the resulting times and stats.

Guessing Cathy Durden is there too. This was posted on her twitter acct. 3 hrs ago.
"Just arrived in Knoxville -fried pickles it is!"
