Alright, here's a rough overview of where the 2019 recruiting presently stands for a few of the major programmes (Cal, Texas & Virginia), culled from some earlier posts on this thread.

Not loudly complaining at my end over all these distance, mid-distance & IM recruits becoming unavailable to LSJU so early on (well, unless they decommit later on in favour of the Farm that is lol).

Have a feeling that Salo & co. aren't smiling all that much either over these 2019 verbals, as distance/open water used to be one of their niche areas on top of their breasts!

Aggies prob not too happy with their arch-rival Horns monopolising the IMs here, traditionally one of their programme's strengths & depth, along with their breasts...

Anyway IMO it's about time that the talent wealth is distributed a mite more evenly all around, bit tired of watching helplessly as the Furd kept hogging 40%+ of the Top 10, recruiting class after recruiting class...

As BD commented, given greater parity between the academic+swim powerhouses (Cal, LSJU, Texas, Michigan, and UVa), reckon most of us here would take our chances with the most proven winner from those five schools - i.e. McKeever...though Meehan does have the more recent momentum there. Also - "Durden crushed LSJU at PACs in fly cluster points and survived in distance. Teri's won titles via back and fly clusters with next to nothing in distance and breast".

Needs:
- Back (we're pretty weak beyond Kathleen & Amy)
- Fly (esp. 200 fly)

- IM (Keaton seems to be the only one apart from Kathleen who can make NCAAs)

Some quick notes:

- Backstrokers in this class (Berkoff, Brooks) have high improvement curves from when I last went over backstrokers (both dropped time at Juniors)
- Lots of flyers, though none of the caliber of the fly-heavy 2018 class

Isabel Ivey (#1 Nat, #1 FL) - Gator Swim Club
All-Around: - esp. good at 100-200 free & 2IM, strong back, breast, fly

She's extremely versatile, with her best stroke being free, and her second best stroke being...uh...basically everything. Versatility is something Teri values, so I can easily see Teri targeting her as a recruit.


Chloe Clark (#17 Nat, #3 CA) - Sierra Marlins Swim Team
All-Around: - great IMs, great 100 back and free, 1:02 breast; only "weakness" is fly (55 sec 100 fly)

You might be wondering as to why I chose such a "lower-ranked" recruit, it's because of her versatility. I tried to find the most versatile recruits, and I think that a lot of the distance swimmers (Donohoe, Heckman, Sims) are ranked too high, especially when they can only swim 500/1000/1650 free (I'm a fan of distance freestylers, don't get me wrong.) However, Chloe is pretty versatile, with her weakest stroke being butterfly, in which she still has a solid time of 55.15, though her best event is IM.

I see her more of an Emma Muzzy (NC State commit)-like swimmer, with a good 200 IM (I'm pretty sure Emma had around the same time too) with backstroke being her strongest stroke. Think her lineup would be similar to Keaton's and Thleen's (if she were to come here haha), with 100/200 back, 200 IM.

Mary Smutny (#7 Nat, #2 FL) - AquaKids Sharks Swim Team
Fly: - best all-around flyer in this class, solid 100/200/500 frees as well


Miranda Heckman (#12 Nat, #2 CA) - Pleasanton Seahawks
Mid-Distance Free (200-500): - great 200 and 500, her 1650 is solid

I can't decide whether she'd swim 200/500/1650 or 500/1650/400 IM. Probably wouldn't be a relay player, and her times seem to be pretty much equal w/ Chenoa's.
(Miranda: 1:46.7/4:41.5/16:28.5/4:15.9 400 IM; Chenoa: 1:48.3/4:41.1/16:04.3/4:13.5)

I don't see Teri recruiting someone with the same times as Chenoa, but if she could drop more time (esp. in 200 free), it might add a lot more value to her.


Kelly Pash (#15 Nat, #2 IN) - Carmel Swim Club
IM: - slightly faster than Nelson in both IMs, but also has solid 50/100/200 frees

Losing both Thleen & Amy makes a high end backstroker a huge need.. Izzy's best value is as a sprinter, but her back times are solid which makes her the clear top priority. Maddie/Cassidy/Elise can hold down the fly legs.

Cora Dupre: Bearz012 and I have discussed her a bit ever since someone shared the Texas unofficial visit pic in the thread. We understand that Texas is on her radar, and probs the Furd (Ashley), Tennessee (Hannah Foster), and maybe some other sprint-inclined school that will cater to her needs, which is primarily sprint (22.51/49.53) and back/fly (54.83/55.92).

Ayla has pretty much the same times as Chloe in backstroke (actually, they both go 53.46 in 100 back), just a bit slower in 200 back. Both have times similar to current frosh Sophie K-Z. As I was looking through her best times, I noticed that they were all done pretty recently, indicating a high improvement curve (similar to baby bear Ema Rajic's improvement curve in breast) which could be pretty promising.

The #4 California recruit, Alexandra Crisera, swims at Southern California Swimming & Mira Costa HS She has solid 50/100/200 free times (22.4/48.8/1:47.0) and projects as a free/back swimmer.

HARVARD COMMIT SAMANTHA SHELTON AMONG WINNERS AT CARLSBAD SECT. DAY 2

Cal-commit Elise Garcia kicked things off with a win in the 100 fly, going 53.62. In second was 15-year-old Anicka Delgado in 53.84.

Beach Cities' Alexandra Crisera, 16, won the girls' 100 back in 53.72, followed closely by Nova's Ayla Spitz in 53.75.

Samantha Shelton, a Harvard-commit, was the only swimmer sub-2:00 in the girls' 200 IM, winning in 1:59.40 (26.21/30.14/34.93/28.12). She had been 1:57.59 in December at the 2017 Speedo Winter Junior National Championships West. Ayla Spitz also took second in the race, going 2:00.49.

Who could it be?

Izzie is currently at an LCM meet in Florida, dropping some pretty solid mid-season times!

On Thursday, she split a 29.23 on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay, a 25.99 freestyle leg on the mixed 200 medley relay, and a 26.06 on the mixed 200 freestyle relay.

The following day, she defeated Hungarian Olympian and silver medalist Boglarka Kapas by nearly 3 seconds in the 200 freestyle, going a 1:59.74. She then placed second in the 100 breast (1:12.64) and split a 2:01.68 on her team's second place 800 meter freestyle relay.

Saturday saw her defeat UF commit Kathleen Golding in the 200 IM by 2 seconds, going a 2:16.77. Her splits were 28.71, 34.44, 41.34, and 32.28. She also placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.51.

Finally, on Sunday, Ivey kicked off her final day with a 1:03.00 backstroke split in her team's 400 medley relay that touched first. She scratched out of finals for this day, but went a 57.10 in the 100 meter freestyle, 2:17.14 in the 200 backstroke, and finally, split a 57.02 on the anchor leg of the 400 freestyle relay.

Taking a (slight) break from all the record-breaking furor (Dressel, I'm lookin at yer...) and the frenzied excitement surrounding the men's team title race @ Minneapolis these next few days, er, just wanted to let Regan know that Bears have a spot specially reserved for you @ Backstroke U come 2020...hehe

To put this astonishing time into some context, Regan would have easily claimed the runner-up spot in this event @ 2018 NCAAs last week - would be behind Thleen & her brilliant American Record by exactly a second...but ahead of 2nd place Asia Seidt & 3rd place Beata Nelson's strong 1:49 swims by almost a full second...

Furthermore, Regan's 1:48.30 would have mounted a successful challenge to Kathleen's 1:48.44 winning time @ 2017 NCAAs!!! Of currently active swimmers, Thleen Bean's the only one who has gone faster than Smith, and on 2 occasions - 2018 Pac-12 (1:48.27) & NCAA finals (1:47.30).

As far as I'm aware, until yesterday, every single 200 Back swim accomplished in a time of 1:48 or lower (I'm consciously omitting the Gators' UK recruit & former WR holder Gemma Spofforth's 1:48.34 from 2009 SECs, since it was done in the supersuit-aided era) has been achieved by a Golden Bear (Thleen, Liz, Missy) ... hence another compelling reason for Regan Smith to join our beary exclusive club - that way, Regan can also continue her studly streak of beating super furdette-to-be Taylor Ruck in the 100 Back like she did @ 2017 Junior World Champs lol

16-YEAR OLD REGAN SMITH SWIMS 1:48 IN 200 YARD BACK AT SECTIONALS



16-year old Regan Smith, a member of the USA Swimming National Team and the 2017 World Championships Team, has crushed the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 200 yard backstroke.

Smith, who bypassed her ascribed Section 1 Sectionals meet in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin earlier this meet, is instead racing in Akron, Ohio. There, she swam a 1:48.30 in the first final of the meet. That improved upon her own record of 1:50.01 set in prelims, Kylie Stewart's old record of 1:50.66 from 2013, and Smith's prior personal best of 1:51.30, done at the 2017 U.S. College Challenge.

b) 200 Fly - 1:53.50 (old PR = 1:55.02 from 2017 USA College Challenge) - that would have qualified for B finals of NCAAs from prelims, but happens to be faster than Vanessa Krause' 1:54.08 in the A final...

• Of some note here - Regan was about half a second from Cal legend Mary T.'s 15-16 NAG record of 1:52.99 that has stood since 1981 (still has almost a year in which to attempt that feat again). That time by "Madame Butterfly" actually also represented the American record for a whopping 21 years, until (appropriately enough) another legendary Golden Bear, Natalie, took it down in Dec 2002...

I know we are recruiting Zoie hard, and for that matter, probably Kelly as well. Not sure of our status with the remaining three, but as far as I'm concerned, UVA recruiting could possibly top Stanford recruiting this graduating class (2019).

Not a big fan of the Duke Chapel: last time I went to services there, God snaked my sunglasses (Oski never pulled that crap on me in Berkeley). They did remove Robert E Lee from the characters above the entrance to the Chapel. Hope he gets replaced by Maija, Klaren, or Grant Hill.

Hmm - looks like Regenauer has dropped about a tenth on her 50 free at NCSAs, and 0.01 off her 100, 2 seconds off her 200, and about 0.4 off her 100 fly. Looks promising, though I think the five schools she's considering are Auburn, Georgia, Ohio State, Stanford, and Virginia.

Think we're all waiting (with bated breath lol) for key decisions from Katharine Berkoff (biggest potential impact!) & Zoie Hartman...

Plus several other high-profile prospects such as Alex Crisera, Sarah Dimeco, Ayla Spitz, Ashlyn Fiorilli, Lindsay Looney, Ashley McCauley etc (may have missed a few).

Of course it is still really early as traditionally official trips don't kick off until the Sept timeframe - but then, it has been anything but traditional judging by the wave of early verbals for this class!

One important consideration (well besides recruiting a talented group who can sort of replace the DT - no trivial task in itself! - whilst demonstrating highly sought-after qualities such as good fit with the team & coaches, solid academics, and being in tune with the school's tradition & spirit) I would reckon is to make sure as few of these get snapped up by LSJU (my main concern ), or by any other schools that can compete with Cal in both the pool & in the classroom...

Do believe that Ashlyn may have visited a while back, towards the beginning of the academic semester. Most/all of the freshmen, Katie McL, and Daniel Carr on the men's side followed her during that time.

Also interested in Duke, UVA, UNC, ASU, Michigan, UGA, amongst others, but noticeably, no Stanford, which is good for us.

The girl in the back row, denoted ??, is Kylie Powers, 2018 Texas A&M commit. Claire Tuggle should be 2022, based on age.

The NCSA team competing at Irish Open last week along with other elite recruits in 2019 and onwards is now being targeted by UVA/All Coaches and NCSU/Braden Holloway in the form of social media, although we know that may not be an accurate indicator. Not to mention, other top programs in the form of Michigan are also scrambling to attract these recruits. Think Teri may want to plan out her 2020 recruiting map now so that she isn't left in a hole come summer 2019...

Recruits targeted include Isabelle Stadden, Anna Keating, Abby Harter, Lillie Nordmann, Emma Sticklen, Caroline Cooper, Phoebe Bacon, Walshes, to name a few... think we've discussed most these recruits in one way or another?
