Neither will 2018 Baby Bear Elise Garcia be making an appearance @ States.

SANCOV, HARTMAN, DELGADO HEADLINE CALIFORNIA STATE MEET PSYCH SHEET

------

  • UPDATE #2->

COMBINED CIF RESULTS SHOW SOUTHERN SECTION DOMINANT FOR GIRLS

Many California high school swimmers will tell you that their section meet is more important than their state meet. So much so that many skip the state meet altogether. There are various reasons for this, with many cases simply being that swimmers' club coaches just want to get the long course season underway. This kind of robs us of seeing a head-to-head, best-on-best showdown of the best swimmers in the state.

Despite this, there's no need to worry, as John Neff has provided us with combined results from all of the CIF section meets. This, theoretically, gives us a glimpse of what a state championship meet might look like with everyone in attendance.

In terms of which section was the fastest in terms of #1 time and not necessarily depth, the Southern Section girls led the way with seven top times out of eleven events. This included a 1-2-3-4 in the 200 free, a tie for 1st in the 50 free, and a pair of 1-2s in the 100 fly and 100 back.

Below, check out full top-16 results, combined from all CIF section meets.

*Note: times do not include relay lead-offs or prelim swims. Only finals.

WOMEN'S 100 BACK

Rank | Name | Section | Time
1 | Tea Laughlin | SS | 52.77
2 | Chloe Clark | SJS | 53.21 (2019 Baby Bear)
2 | Emily Trieu | SS | 53.21
4 | Alexandra Crisera | SS | 53.71

WOMEN'S 200 IM

Rank | Name | Section | Time
1 | Zoie Hartman | NCS | 1:57.37
2 | Chloe Clark | SJS | 1:58.29 (2019 Baby Bear)
3 | Vivian Wang | CCS | 1:59.48

200m Free
#61 {Prelims} : Rachel -> 2:06.46 (PB = 2:03.44 @ 2017 Speedo LC Sectionals, 14 July)

Everyone's basically @ different stages of their LCM training cycles, so wouldn't expect a bunch of spectacular time drops at this in-season meet...

...though I'm rather impressed by Rachel busting out PBs in her 100m Fly & 100m Free last night, and now in her 50m Free, all whilst tackling a pretty heavy schedule of events here in Indy! Go Baby Bear!

Luca Urlando, Chloe Clark Double Section Record Setters at CIF SAC-Joaquin Meet

Granite Bay's Chloe Clark broke two minutes to win the 200 IM in 1:58.29, lowering her own Section record set last year. She also won the 100 back with a 53.21, .02 faster than her own Section record.

------

Not mentioned in the above writeup was Chloe's new lifetime best of 25.22 in the 50 Back, leading off
Granite Bay's 200 Medley Relay to claim the team runner-up in finals. Prev PB = 25.43 from the 2016 edition of Sections.

------

2018 CIF Swimming & Diving Championships (CA State Champs) is currently underway...

- RESULTS => http://www.results.teamunify.com/clov/2018/CIFSTATEMEET/

****

  • 50y Back (B final - 200y Medley Relay, leadoff leg)

Chloe -> 25.46 (PB = 25.22 @ 2018 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, 10 May)

2nd fastest back leg in the field (top time in the B final), surpassed only by incoming sapling Amalie Fackenthal's 25.34 in the A final.

****

  • 200y IM (A final)

#3 - Chloe -> 2:00.12 (PB = 1:57.32 @ 2016 Winter Junior Champs, 8 Dec)

2019 Dawg commit Zoie Hartman obliterated her PB by almost 2 sec in winning this race with a blistering 1:55.95!

****

  • 100y Back (A final)

#1 - Chloe -> 53.67 (PB = 53.21 @ 2018 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section, 10 May)

2018 State Champ...only swimmer to dip below the 54 sec mark...well done, Chloe!

****

FYI Chloe had also led off Granite Bay's 400 Free Relay during yesterday's prelims session in a 50.73 (PB = 49.27 from 2016 Winter Jr Champs), fastest time amongst her squad by far. Her team finished @ #17 thus just missing this afternoon's finals.

Judging from results (albeit just pure speculation on my part lol), CIF Sections rather than the recently established States was the primary taper meet of the short course season for Chloe & her school, which actually appears to be the norm rather than the exception for California...

Congrats Emma, welcome to Bear Territory!

Looks like Emma is primarily a sprinter specialising in the 50 &100 Free (pretty tall @ 6' 1"), with a bit of breast potential perhaps?

At a glance, Emma had placed 10th with a 23.44 in the 50 Free @ 2018 CIF Champs prelims yesterday (that time would have won the B final today!), but chose not to race finals. Had also achieved a 51.44 in the 100 Free prelims, placing 17th.

In the 100 fly at CIF's this year, she placed 5th with a 54.18, and followed that up with a 3rd place finish in the 100 back (54.14).

3) Emily Trieu (#51 Nat, #8 CA) - Brea Aquatics, Los Osos High School
Events: 200 IM, 50 free, 100 back

2-SPORT ATHLETE EMMA DAVIDSON ANNOUNCES VERBAL COMMITMENT TO CAL

Emma Davidson, a junior at Yorba Linda High School in Southern California, has announced she plans to swim for the Cal Bears beginning in 2019-20. Current photo via Emma Davidson

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Emma Davidson, a junior at Yorba Linda High School in Southern California, has announced she plans to swim for the University of California, Berkeley beginning in 2019-20. That puts her in a class of 2023 that will also include verbal commits Ashlyn Fiorilli, Chloe Clark, Isabel Ivey, Rachel Klinker, and Sarah DiMeco.

"I could not be more excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of California Berkeley class of 2023!! A huge thank you to my family, coaches, and friends for their endless support. GO BEARS!

Davidson moved to Orange County from Seattle in 2013. She played club volleyball and swam until January of 2017, when she "dropped high school and club volleyball from [her] schedule and began training full-time with SoCal Aquatics." Prior to that she "had only been swimming part time on a small team until [she] dropped volleyball."

Davidson concentrates mainly on sprint freestyle and is an NISCA All-American in both the 50 and 100 free. She won the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 titles in both events as a sophomore and again this year as a junior. In club swimming she qualified for Summer Juniors in the 100m breast "after only training full-time for 7 months with Coach Steve Pickell."

Davidson has improved markedly over the last two years. Her top SCY times include:

EVENT | SPRING 2016 | SPRING 2017 | SPRING 2018
50 free | 24.09 | 23.35 | 23.27

Quick update from Day 1 of Mel Zajac...

1) Blimey, Isabelle Stadden just went a blistering 2:08.37 in the 200m Back @ Mel Zajac!!! Wot a massive swim!!!
- Prev. PB before today = 2:11.17 (Austin PSS, Jan 2018)

...to put that time in a bit of perspective, Regan, Team USA's other finalist in this event behind Thleen @ Budapest 2017, has only been faster than that @ 2017 World Championships...

Isabelle's currently the fastest American, and that time ranks #9 in the world!

2017-2018 LCM WOMEN 200 BACK - Top 25 (World)

2) KB3 aka Katharine Berkoff also threw down a personal record of 2:10.55 for runner-up. Great time, dropping more than 2 and a half sec!
- Prev. PB before today = 2:13.10 (Mesa PSS, Apr 2018)

Not going to be around to post results updates for remaining events in a timely manner, but the meet results can be accessed here: 2018 Mel Zajac Jr. International - RESULTS

...Baby Bear Ema Rajic had scored a lifetime best in her 50m Fly (28.25) ... not too far off her 100m Free PB of 57.56 either, leading off the victorious US Nat Jr team in the 4x100m Free!

Gretchen (54.90 anchor to basically win it for the team!), Zoie (57.05), Ema (57.76 leadoff), Grace (58.76)

Updates from the Mel Zajac Meet...

1) US Junior placed 3-4-7-9 in the 100 fly, with Phoebe Bacon and Gretchen Walsh going 1:01.63 and 1:01.64 for new personal bests, Ema Rajic with a 1:02.41, and Grace Cooper with a 1:02.73

2) Gretchen Walsh also dropped a new personal best of 25.46 in prelims of the 50 free, and still won comfortably with a 25.50 in finals. Grace Cooper placed 3rd with a 26.11, and Ema placed 8th with a 26.60.

3) Last night's 200 back winner Isabelle Stadden of the U.S. junior team won the 50 tonight in 28.17, a new best time, moving into a tie for 3rd among Americans this year with Ali Deloof. Her teammate Katharine Berkoff (28.38) tied her best from prelims for 2nd, and Gator's Emma Ball (28.47) also went a PB for 3rd. (Bacon was 29.32 for 5th.)

4) Ema, following her heavy event load, also placed 9th in the 200 IM with a 2:22.51 (2:20.48 in prelims).

5) In the women's 800 free relay, the U.S. juniors (8:18.97) had an epic battle with the Canadian juniors, as Kyla Leibel (2:01.36) nearly ran down Walsh (2:02.33) on the anchor leg. Berkoff was the main difference between the two teams, leading off in 2:03.93.

Some great swims, especially from Stadden and Walsh, though I'm really impressed with Ema's versatility and heavy event load, swimming 4 events this evening! (100 fly, 50 free, 200 IM, and was part of the 800 FR)

+1 on Baby Bear Ema's versatility!

Notably, none of her 3 A finals individuals or the 4x200m Free relay on Day 2 involved Rajic's primary stroke, breast...well, other than 1/4 of her 200 IM race lol.

Another easily overlooked stat is that Ema's 2:06.55 leg in Team USA's winning 800 FR is considerably faster than her 2:08.47 PB in the 200m Free individual (achieved @ 2017 Santa Clara PSS), after reaction times are accounted for from Rajic's relay flying start.

Backstroke ace KB3 had also laid down an impressive 2:03.93 lifetime best leadoff to lend her teammates a commanding lead on that relay (prev. PB = 2:08.23 from July 2017), with breaststroke stud Zoie contributing a very respectable 2:06.16 split (also a PB).

As mentioned on the 2020 Men's recruits thread, DART's Gianluca Urlando also making quite a splash @ Mel Zajac...

-------

Ema has just put down a 32.38 in the 50m Breast to claim the #3 seed for tonight's A finals ... PR = 31.91.

Go Bears!

" The U.S. juniors established a few more PBs this morning, including Zoie Hartman knocking half a second off her 50 breast to take the top seed in 32.17. Calgary's Rachel Nicol (32.22) and Hartman's teammate Ema Rajic (32.38) are close behind.

Gretchen Walsh and Katharine Berkoff both hit best times on Saturday morning, and did so again on Sunday. Walsh took the top seed in the women's 100 free, clocking 55.50 to lower her PB of 56.12 from the 2017 U.S. Open.

Berkoff dropped her 100 back best by nearly a second in 1:00.69, qualifying 2nd behind teammate Isabelle Stadden (1:00.41). Phoebe Bacon (1:02.15) made it a 1-2-3 prelim for the U.S. juniors."

Grace Cooper (DLTA) & Ema Rajic (HEAT) share their experiences with Team USA

Ema Rajic (HEAT)

Mel Zajac was truly an amazing experience. Getting to wear an American flag cap in competition was an honor and something I can't describe. Repping USA on deck with swimmers from all across the country was pretty special. None of us knew each other before the meet but within a day of being there together, we quickly bonded and became a unified team on deck. We all cheered for each other and were proud of our teammates regardless of how they swam. The coaches were super helpful and willing to help the athletes in any way possible, whether that be catering food, filling up water bottles, or doing pace. Being exposed to the traditions of team USA was definitely a highlight of the meet. Not only did everyone take the traditions very seriously, but we all knew the importance of what we were doing and did our best to uphold that standard. Another highlight would be swimming on the relays. I had the opportunity to swim on two relays, both of which we won. On the second or third day of the meet, we had the 800 free relay. I figured I wouldn't be put on it because I don't swim the 200 free and I had 6 races that day, but the coaches told me they trusted me "to bust out another race". The relay was extremely painful but my teammates lifted me up beforehand and encouraged me the best they could. Without them and the support of the rest of the team and staff, I don't think I would've held the lead on the relay. Overall, Mel Zajac did a wonderful job of introducing me to international competition and definitely increased my hunger to make another USA team.

The Class of 2020 is over flowing with first tier backstrokers.

Who are the top sprinters in the Class of 2020? Bray? Cooper?

Re the top sprinters in the Class of 2020, thought that I'd compile the following lists of sprint-oriented freestyle PB times, as ability in this area of swimming is traditionally highly prized by NCAA collegiate programmes for its scoring value (relays etc).

In this instance, I have only listed those Top 20 recruits, as originally ranked by SwimSwam, who have a relatively solid recorded time in either the 50, 100 or 200 yard frees, so not necessarily all that comprehensive of a list.

Have included stroke specialists who also have achieved notable swims in the 50/100/200 distance of the freestyle discipline (with their stroke times included if of note).

Interestingly enough, the top times below are all held by stroke aces with top-end versatility rather than by the pure sprinters themselves, i.e. Regan (100, 200 Free) & Alex (50 Free). Not too surprising as this 2020 class is particularly deep in back & fly talent, and has been frequently lauded as one of the most promising since the landmark 2015 class that had gifted Bears with the Dream Team.

Now the outlook for the 2021 class will likely be a bit different, since Gretchen (Alex's younger sibling), who's sprint free oriented but with some outstanding versatility (52.85-100 back, 52.81-100 fly...not at all shabby, eh?! ) is expected to lead the 50/100/200 Free lists for her HS class (GW's currently 21.85/47.93/1:45.80 there as a HS freshman...blinking brill times!!)

Caveat: the data below doesn't take into account progression, improvement curves, or consistency. For example, Isabelle Stadden can boast a 4 sec drop within the last year in her 200 Free, and a sec in her 100 & 200 Free - really impressive! As noted by SwimSwam, Jasmine Rumley's still "splitting her time between three sports, also coming off of stress fractures in both shins".

Furthermore, several of these 2020 prospects don't get to swim these free events very often if at all in HS competition - perhaps the occasional relay, esp if their skills in other areas may be in greater demand for their HS team's scoring chances...

So keep in mind that the context (not taken into account in my static lists below) is often more relevant to upside potential & projected development in college than limited snapshots of personal best times!

Big Night for Gator Swim Club on Day Two of Gainesville Speedo Sectionals

Women's 200 Free

Swimming unattached, Isabel Ivey nearly cracked the two-minute barrier in day two's opening event. The future Cal Bear won the event in 2:00.08, well over two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

AquaKids' Mary Smutny finished second in 2:02.67 while Swim Florida's Olivia McMurray took third in 2:02.89.

Isabel Ivey, Jan Switkowski Win Twice on Night Three in Gainesville

From the archives ... Izz @ 2017 Jr Nats

It was another fast night at the 2018 Speedo Sectionals in Gainesville, Fla. Isabel Ivey and Jan Switkowski each won two events.

Women's 100 Back

After winning the women's 200 free last night, Isabel Ivey won her second title of the weekend in the 100 back. She got her hand to the wall first in 1:02.25 after posting a personal best 1:01.63 during prelims.

Gator's Caitlin Brooks was .01 faster than this morning to finish second in 1:03.03 while her teammate Emma Ball took third in 1:03.71.

Women's 200 IM

Not too long after winning the women's 100 back, Ivey was back in the pool to claim the 200 IM title as well. She dropped nearly two seconds from her morning swim to win the event by nearly one second in 2:17.47.

South Florida's Kathleen Golding recorded a second-place showing in 2:18.34 and Swim Florida's Olivia McMurray finished third in 2:18.66.

Prelims for the final day of competition will begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. EST.

  • UPDATE #1 =>

Isabel Ivey Collects Fifth Win On Night Four In Gainesville

Isabel Ivey won her fifth individual event on the final night of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals in Gainesville, Fla.

Women's 100 Free

Isabel Ivey found herself with the gold for the fourth time this meet after winning the women's 100 free by nearly a full second. She finished in 55.48, making that a new lifetime best.

Gator's Isabella Garofalo also swam a new personal best of 56.43 for second and Quest's Kelsey Dambacher finished third in 57.39.

Smutny (57.52), South Florida's Kathleen Golding (57.90), Gator's Victoria Bindi (58.28) and Gator's Sydney Kang (58.33) completed the top heat.

Women's 200 Back

Not too long after a win in the women's 100 free, Ivey was back in the pool to take the crown in the 200 back with a time of 2:14.73. That marks her fifth victory of the meet.

Gator's Caitlin Brooks was second in 2:17.59 and third went to Mary Kelley in 2:19.93.

  • MORE UPDATES =>

Those times reported as Izzie's personal bests in the SW reports above (1:01.63 in the 100m Back, 55.48 in the 100m Free), are not strictly accurate...

Ivey's actual lifetime bests =>
100 Back: 1:01.36 (2017 National Champs)
100 Free: 54.95 (2016 Jr. Pan Pacs)

However, what's really encouraging about those 2 swims raced at Speedo Sectionals over the weekend is that they represent the fastest that Izz has ever gone untapered, so indications are that she has by & large gotten over the hump from injuries/health issues sustained last year, and well on the way back to the stellar form that had turned so many heads @ 2016 Jr Pan Pacs!

TOP JUNIOR CONTENDERS FOR TEAM USA'S JUNIOR PAN PACS SQUAD

As we continue to preview individual events for this summer's U.S. National Championships (check out all our picks here), the major question is who will qualify to compete where. The 2018 National Championships will qualify swimmers for five major international meets spanning two years: 2018 Pan Pacs, 2018 Junior Pan Pacs, 2019 Worlds, 2019 World University Games and 2019 Pan American Games. (Check out full selection procedures here)

To give us a baseline of who appears in line for spots as things stand now, we're compiling the top 6 swims in each event by athletes who are eligible for Junior Pan Pacs.
First, some disclaimers:
  • In order to be eligible for Junior Pan Pacs, a swimmer must be between 13 and 18 as of December 31, 2018. That means swimmers born between the years 2000 and 2005. Specific birthdays aren't always readily available for junior swimmers, so we've done our best to determine ages as of USA Swimming's SWIMS database. If a swimmer on this list is not eligible, let us know in the comments and we'll dig further.
  • We've used the top times from the U.S. Nationals qualifying period that means from June 1, 2017 until now. Naturally, that will filter out athletes who had a rough summer of 2017 for whatever reason. That's not an intentional slight to those athletes, just a time frame that makes sense and limits our research field to a manageable size.
  • It shouldn't have to be said, but this list is not a set-in-stone prediction of who will qualify and who won't. Young swimmers improve (and regress) all the time. Don't take offense that your favorite swimmer isn't listed, or is listed too low. This is merely a list of times within the time frame.
  • For obvious reasons, we can't include relay splits there is no good database of relay splits to pull from. If your favorite swimmer has shown greater potential on relays, feel free to make note of that in the comments section.
  • This story should also serve as a great opportunity to make your own predictions of who will make this summer's Junior Pan Pacs Team.
The Jr Pan Pacs team will be selected based on the finish order of the 2018 U.S. National Championships. That means current national rankings mean nothing. If one swimmer makes the B final and another the C, the B final swimmer (if he or she finishes his or her finals race without DQing) will be the higher-placing athlete even if the C final swimmer puts up a better time in the final. Obviously, swimmers who don't compete at Nationals are not eligible.

From a birds-eye view of the complex selection procedures, the top 2 in each event should make the team. If there's still space on the 20-boy, 20-girl roster, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place candidates could also make the team. Unlike many other meets, the top 6 in the 100 and 200 frees are not selected with higher priority. After second place, the roster will be filled out with the next-best swimmer from any event based on world rankings among juniors.

The final wrinkle is that juniors who make the senior Pan Pacs team will not be able to swim Junior Pan Pacs.

NEW NLI RULE ELIMINATES SPLIT SIGNING PERIODS FOR 2019-2020 ATHLETES

New rules regarding National Letters of Intent (NLIs) eliminate the previous early signing period, unifying it with the previous regular signing period for most NCAA sports.

NLIs are one-year scholarship agreements that make up the framework of the NCAA scholarship system. An NLI is a binding agreement between an athlete and a school in which the athlete agrees to attend the school and the school agrees to provide athletic financial aid in college recruiting, the NLI is essentially the finish line, as athletes can no longer 'de-commit' without losing a year of eligibility. A verbal commitment is a non-binding agreement that a recruit can change (and schools can rescind roster spots or scholarship offers), but signing an NLI makes the scholarship offer (and intent to attend school and compete for that school in the NCAA) official and binding.

Previously, the bulk of the NCAA's sports had split signing periods in which schools and athletes could sign National Letters of Intent for the upcoming school year. For example, for athletes enrolling for the 2018-2019 school year, an early signing period from November 8, 2017 to November 15, 2017 offered the first chance to lock down scholarship offers. Prospects who didn't sign within that period had to wait for the regular period, from April 11, 2018 to August 1, 2018.

But for athletes in the high school class of 2019, the two periods have been joined with no 'dead period' in the middle. Rising high school seniors can sign NLIs from November 14, 2018 to August 1, 2019 in most Division I and II sports.
