Re the top sprinters in the Class of 2020, thought that I'd compile the following lists of sprint-oriented freestyle PB times, as ability in this area of swimming is traditionally highly prized by NCAA collegiate programmes for its scoring value (relays etc).
In this instance, I have only listed those Top 20 recruits, as originally ranked by SwimSwam, who have a relatively solid recorded time in either the
50,
100 or
200 yard frees, so not necessarily all that comprehensive of a list.
Have included stroke specialists who also have achieved notable swims in the 50/100/200 distance of the freestyle discipline (with their stroke times included if of note).
Interestingly enough, the top times below are all held by
stroke aces with top-end versatility rather than by the pure sprinters themselves, i.e.
Regan (100, 200 Free) &
Alex (50 Free). Not too surprising as this 2020 class is particularly deep in back & fly talent, and has been frequently lauded as one of the most promising since the landmark 2015 class that had gifted Bears with the Dream Team.
Now the outlook for the 2021 class will likely be a bit different, since
Gretchen (Alex's younger sibling), who's sprint free oriented but with some outstanding versatility (52.85-100 back, 52.81-100 fly...not at all shabby, eh?!
) is expected to lead the 50/100/200 Free lists for her HS class (GW's currently 21.85/47.93/1:45.80 there as a HS freshman...blinking brill times!!)
Caveat: the data below doesn't take into account
progression,
improvement curves, or
consistency. For example,
Isabelle Stadden can boast a 4 sec drop within the last year in her 200 Free, and a sec in her 100 & 200 Free - really impressive! As noted by SwimSwam,
Jasmine Rumley's still "splitting her time between three sports, also coming off of stress fractures in both shins".
Furthermore, several of these 2020 prospects don't get to swim these free events very often if at all in HS competition - perhaps the occasional relay, esp if their skills in other areas may be in greater demand for their HS team's scoring chances...
So keep in mind that the context (not taken into account in my static lists below) is often more relevant to upside potential & projected development in college than limited snapshots of personal best times!
