TOP 20 NCAA SWIMMING RECRUITS IN THE GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2019

TOP 10 SWIMMERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2019

1. Isabel Ivey Gator Swim Club F.W. Buchholz High School Gainesville, Florida **Verbally Committed to Cal**

Best Times: 200 free - 1:43.64, 100 free - 47.88, 50 free - 22.43, 200 IM - 1:55.77, 100 back - 52.27, 100 fly - 52.61, 200 fly - 1:56.48, 100 breast - 1:00.99, 400 IM - 4:12.08

Ivey is the definition of do-everything star she is among the best in her class at all four strokes. Her 200 free time from Winter Juniors would have made the NCAA A final, and she's already in scoring territory in the 100 free and 200 IM. Whatever events Ivey ultimately specializes in, she should be a 4-5 relay factor in the NCAA post-season and has the stroke versatility to save a medley relay in several different ways.

The 2019 recruiting class looks pretty good. Izzy will be a star. She's not very tall, but she's nearly as versatile as Baker. Extremely charismatic, so will help recruit future teammates.

#1 recruit Isabel Ivey signing her National Letter of Intent to Cal this morning!

What's particularly intriguing are the public mentions from several sources of Izzy starting @ Cal on 3 Jan 2019...er, just in time for that coveted mid-winter training trip to Hawaii?

May account for Izzie not having competed @ 2018 Florida HS States last week, though Ivey has re-affirmed that she'll be graduating from Buchholz High.

This would be rather significant news if true, as would give Bears a massive shot in the arm for 2018-2019 NCAAs, considering the uphill battle we're facing with the early loss of Thleen (pro), probable absence of Billy (stress fractures), froski Alex being MIA (moshpit injuries??! ) & Cassidy still recovering from her knee issues, Chenoa (no longer on the roster), etc.

Anyway will update this post with more Bears NLIs news as they come in - if they haven't already been posted elsewhere...

Hmmm, interesting news, but do we really want to pull forward a year of eligibility for I^2 and sacrifice a year in the future?

ISABEL IVEY TO GRADUATE EARLY, BEGIN AT CAL AS MID-SEASON ADDITION

Isabel Ivey, our #1 recruit in the high school class of 2019, signed a National Letter of Intent at Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Florida on Wednesday morning. She had declared back in January her intent to swim at the University of California, Berkeley in the class of 2023.

This morning, however, we learned that Ivey plans to leave Buchholz in December and head to Berkeley on January 3, 2019 to join the women's swimming and diving team as a mid-season addition to the class of 2022.

Ivey's arrival on the Bears' roster in January will help soften the blow of Kathleen Baker's decision to turn pro and forego her senior season at Cal. Baker made that announcement just after Phillips 66 Nationals in August.

that amazing that 2 of the 2019 recruits will be swimming this year! Izzy will no doubt help us this year. What are the chances Chloe will have an impact this year? Should she burn a year?

Just a wee bit of caution advised b4 celebrating prematurely - or putting unnecessary pressure on our 2 early recruits...

imo Amy is still the lynchpin of the team's realistic hopes to wrest the national title from the Furdette Machine. Most of our relays are currently still at least one leg away from record-worthy potential even with the very welcome inclusion of Izzy, with the medley relays being the most vulnerable on leadoff back.

Billy & Thleen really brought so much value & power to Cal's relays - obviously in their speciality stroke (back), but also in their amazing but often unheralded free splits across the board that flew under a lot of radars.

Yes if Bilquist's back to health & form by this March (tbh, a tall order judging from the current look of things), reckon Bears will have a very credible shot at challenging & upsetting those highly-favoured trees!

Without Billy in the mix for 2019 NCAAs however (a scenario that may have been unanticipated for, when Baker had originally announced her early pro decision, and Izzy as a result took the offered opportunity to jump on board to help her future teammates out), the addition of Isabel should at least help Cal fend off dangerous threats to snatching that runner-up spot from the likes of Michigan and perhaps Texas.

  • btw, Chloe coming to Berkeley Jan 2019 has now been confirmed via SwimSwam:

CHLOE CLARK JOINING CAL IN JANUARY AS MEMBER OF CLASS OF 2022

California's Chloe Clark, our #12 recruit from the class of 2019, will finish Granite Bay High School six months early and head to Cal in early January as a mid-season addition to the class of 2022.

Isabel Ivey will also join the Bears' roster in mid-season. The additions of Clark and Ivey will go a long way toward mitigating the loss of senior Kathleen Baker, who decided to forego her final year of NCAA eligibility to turn pro.

Cal Adds Nine To Women's Swimming Roster

Three of Nation's Top 20 Recruits Sign With Golden Bears

BERKELEY - Cal women's swimming & diving coach Teri McKeever announced Friday the signing of a nine-swimmer recruiting class that includes five of the nation's top 25 high school seniors.

The new Golden Bears hail from six states spanning from Florida to California and bring talent in a wide range of strokes and distances.

"I'm really excited about this class because of the amount of energy they're going to bring," McKeever said. "It's a group that can swim a lot of different things, from sprints to distances, which is I think is going to benefit the versatility of our program as a whole and individually for their careers. The fact that we have signed swimmers from across the country I feel speaks to the success of our program and the reputation of our institution. These are women who are looking for world-class academics and world-class athletics."

Carter owns Los Altos High School marks in the 100 back and 200 IM; Davidson is an All-American and Scholastic All-American with six school records to her credit; Fiorilli is a member of the U.S. Junior National Team in the 200 fly and competed at the FINA World Junior Championships in 2017 in the event; and Kalandadze is a three-time Pennsylvania state champion in the 500 free who has also swum the 10K at Open Water Nationals.

This recruit class is loaded with talent-where did SwimSwam rank them? This seems to be the best class since the Fab Four class. Several mid distance free style swimmers could turn the 500m & 1650 m into strengths. Also the two top swimmers Izzy & Chloe are super sprint free stylers. Where do you guys see the class filling out the other three stroke events [breast, butterfly & back]? Just curious...GO BEARS!

Bears will definitely enjoy an unprecedented wealth of scoring depth in the distance events (*500* & *1,650* yards free) at the conference level. What Sarah, Ashlyn, Rachel & Anna will bring additionally to the table - solid depth to fill in our historical holes in the *400 IM* & *200 Fly*.

-----

Schroeder71 said:

Actually Izzy & Chloe aren't pure sprinters as such - Ivey's individual events @ NCAAs will likely be *200 IM | 200 Free |100 Free* ... whilst Clark could end up racing the *200 IM | 100 Back/400 IM | 200 Back/100 Free* @ Pac-12s!

Thanks to their studly versatility however, they do have quite a bit of range that extends somewhat down to the sprint frees...though Isabel's forte becomes more apparent in the mid-sprints, *100 & 200 Free*, the latter at which she excels.

Here are some best times for SwimSwam's Top 20 in the class of 2019 who are comparable to or faster than Baby Bears Izzy & Chloe in the *50 Free* sprint:

22.04 - #2 Kate Douglass (UVA)
22.43 - #1 Isabel Ivey (Cal)
22.43 - #7 Alexandra Crisera (LSJU)
22.44 - #14 Talia Bates (UF)
22.65 - #12 Chloe Clark (Cal)

Kate Douglass is basically the only one in her class with a close-to-elite time in the sprint free...even then, she's not really your classic pure sprinter, as her talents include being good at IM, breast & fly.

Looking ahead to the class of 2020, versatile Alex Walsh (who has already taken trips to the Farm & to Charlottesville) is by far the quickest sprinter there, even though, like with Douglass & Ivey, her speciality lies elsewhere, in Alex's case, more in back, breast & IM.

22.08 - #2 Alex Walsh
22.29 - HM Jasmine Rumley
22.35 - #5 Kaitlyn Dobler (*USC commit*)
22.37 - #16 Grace Cooper
22.46 - #9 Maxine Parker

Now, waiting in the wings (class of 2021), there's Gretchen Walsh with that spectacular 21.85 that was set in her HS freshman year! One bright spot here - the younger of the Walsh siblings appears to be good friends with our Izzy...

-----

Schroeder71 said:

Where do you guys see the class filling out the other three stroke events [breast, butterfly & back]?
Izzie, Chloe & Danielle are all more than competent *backstrokers* (Dani is fastest of the trio at the 200 distance, also has some potential @ the *100 Fly* - current froski Alex Sumner's the cream of the crop in the *200 back*), albeit not presently at Thleen or Billy's stratospheric level (well, very few are!). Amy will have exhausted her eligibility by the time this 2019 class comes in (unless Billy blueshirts??), but Keeks will still be around to help out on back (& free).

The cavalry will def be potentially riding to our rescue in the following 2020 class with its riches of high-end sprint back & fly talents to hopefully shore up our medley relays (Isabelle Stadden, Regan Smith, Alex Walsh, Phoebe Bacon etc. - Olivia Bray having already verballed to the Horns) - if Teri's successful in recruiting these studs before they are prematurely snatched up by the competition! imo, an elite backstroker should be a massive recruiting priority, if Cal wants to remain known as "Backstroke U"...

Bears should be alright for 1 more cycle in the sprint breast dept (Ali & Ema), with Izzy & Emma in support if need be (Davidson has promising upside, though sprint free may be her greater strengths).

Similarly with fly, as Madds, Elise & Cassidy will shore up the relays there after Bug is gone *sob* But hopefully Bears can reel in a top-flight sprint flyer for 2020 (Regan, please don't be lured into being put out to pasture on the Farm!)

Any idea why she would choose to announce her commitment so late, both in terms of after the early signing period has ended and when virtually all other of SS/CS' top recruits started committing as early as last spring?

At Georgia this weekend, possibly with #16 Grace Cooper & 2019 recruit Mady Bragg (#288 Nat, #7 GA), Bragg having previously visited LSU & Bama.

Faith (listed on CS as 2019) is checking out the other AZ school this weekend, along with several 2020 recruits:

Faith Knelson (#13 Nat, #1 BC - 2019) & Jadyn Jannasch (#147 Nat, #8 TX - 2020)

Faith Knelson is paying the Trojanettes a visit this weekend, along with Sophie Housey. Would personally reckon that Faith would end up @ SC, over UGA, UofA or ASU of the schools that she's known to have visited...

Looks like Faith Nelson (BC) off to University of Arizona, as per her Instagram bio:

https://www.instagram.com/faithknelson/

Cheers for the heads up!

Well a wee bit of a surprising development, as all along had reckoned at my end that Faith was bound for 'SC - but then again, I was also completely wrong lol when the other elite breaststroker in the class (er, not to overlook sprint breast stud Emily Weiss {IU} & versatile Coleen Gillilan {ND} of course!), #6 Zoie Hartman, had signed to the Dawgs instead of to the Trojanettes.

Reckon perhaps that Salo has already amassed enough of the breast talent for his group, having already won a verbal from #5 Kaitlyn Dobler for the class of 2020? :p

So, Faith Knelson (CS ranking as of verbal: #14 Nat, #1 BC) -> U of A

Will update with photo/writeup of Faith's commit once that has been officially posted...

2018 WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS EAST: DAY 1 FINALS LIVE RECAP

2018 WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS WEST: DAY 1 FINALS LIVE RECAP

------

Here are some splits from our 2019 Baby Bears for the 2 relays raced this evening...hope I didn't miss anyone! :p

Note that the swimmers at these 2 meets are at varying degrees of rest & differing stages in their training cycles (i.e. Winter Juniors may not be the main SCY taper competition for most)...

  • --- 200 Medley Relay ---

= 50 Back = {leadoff}
24.29 - Izzy (30.14 prev PB, from Nov 2013 lol) -> New PB!
24.86 - Ayla (24.99 prev PB, from 2017 Winter Jrs) -> New PB!
25.64 - Dani (25.11 PB, from 2017 Winter Jrs)
~n/a~ - Chloe (25.22 PB, from May 2018) - didn't swim this relay

Also throwing in the lifetime bests achieved by our current Bears (+ Thleen Bean ) on leadoff back in this relay, for reference:

= 50 Back = {leadoff}
23.56 - Thleen (PB from 2018 NCAAs)
23.81 - Billy (PB from 2017 Pac-12s)
24.16 - Keeks (PB from 2018 UGA)
24.75 - Sophie (PB from 2018 Pac-12s)

WALSHES, FOSTERS HIGHLIGHT 2018 WINTER JR CHAMPS EAST PSYCH SHEETS
  • SWIMINSIDER: "apparently Ivey will not be shaved or tapered this weekend as she prepares to leave for Cal."

Hmmm, if Izzy's truly not rested much here (as claimed above), her 50 Back leadoff time from tonight is really quite encouraging, as that would provide Teri with extra options come this March, Keeks' promising PB in this relay @ the UGA Invite notwithstanding... At any rate, Ivey's other swims in the next couple of days should provide a wee bit more of a clue as to where Izzy is in her current training, prior to joining up with all her big sisters & Chloe quite shortly!

= 50 Fly = {split, from a flying start}
24.35 - Sarah (26.68 PB, from Feb 2016)
24.95 - Ashlyn (25.48 PB, from Dec 2017)

= 50 Free = {split, from a flying start}
22.62 - Emma (23.04 PB, from Nov 2018)

Note the Walsh siblings' times on this relay tonight - #2 Alex (2020) laid down a scintillating 23.88 PB on her back leadoff, and #1 Gretchen (2021) threw down a commanding 21.50 on her anchor for NAC!

Alex has already taken a recruiting trip to the Farm as well as to Charlottesville, so methinks her good friends Cass & Izzy need to redouble their valiant efforts to welcome Walsh major to the Bears family instead!

Walsh minor may actually be even more valued than her super versatile sister if that's even possible (top sprint star in the making and all that brill stuff). Luckily Izzy was surely working her charms on Gretchen @ 2018 Pan Pacs Juniors...or so I'd like to think lol.

  • --- 800 Free Relay ---

*=split from a flying start...otherwise=leadoff leg

= 200 Free =
1:46.31* - Ayla (1:45.44 PB, from May 2018)
1:47.16* - Sarah (1:46.98 PB, from Nov 2018)
1:49.78 - Chloe (1:50.10 prev PB, from Feb 2018) -> New PB!
1:50.87* - Dani (1:45.44 PB, from May 2018)
1:51.97 - Ashlyn (1:52.34 prev PB, from Dec 2017) -> New PB!

Not to be overlooked - #1 Regan Smith (2020)'s 1:44.30 leadoff PB, and #18 Lillie Nordmann (2020)'s 1:44.62 anchor.

Regan & Lillie visited the Farm back in Oct, with the former having also taken a trip to Louisville, the latter to TAMU, Georgia & UVA...and both are seen by some as heavy leans already to the Dark Side...er, I mean, the Furdettes

Heading out, but meanwhile here are a few results for our 2019 Baby Bears.

Further time drops may be forthcoming in tonight's finals session, assuming their morning swims were solid enough to qualify for finals.

2018 WINTER JUNIORS EAST: DOUGLASS GOES 21.8 ON DAY 2 PRELIMS

Rachel Klinker dropped almost a second and a half to go 4:45.39 for third.

200 IM
In tonight's final, keep tabs on Isabel Ivey (lifetime-best 1:55.77 from last year). Ivey is only a few months away from joining Cal early as one of the top high school senior prospects in the nation.

50 FREE
Isabel Ivey also doubled with the 200 IM, and went 22.68 to just sneak into the top 8, a few hundredths off her best.

* 2018 Winter Juniors - Day 2 FINALS *

Here's a compilation of the times achieved by our 2019 Baby Bears @ this evening's finals.

Just a wee addendum, courtesy of the now concluded 400 Medley Relay races:

^ = Flying/rolling start split

100 Back - 52.83 - Izzy {51.73 PB, from Nov 2018}
100 Back - 53.35 - Ayla {53.46 Prev PB, from 2017 Winter Jrs} -> New PB! (2nd fastest leadoff @ Jr Nats West - behind only Regan's Billy-worthy 50.58!)
100 Back - 55.61 - Dani {53.51 PB, from 2017 Winter Jrs}

100 Fly^ - 54.64 - Sarah {54.17 PB, from March 2018}
100 Fly^ - 54.71 - Ashlyn {54.71 PB, from March 2018}

100 Free^ - 50.66 - Emma {50.30 PB, from Nov 2018}

FYI, tonight's was the 4th fastest 100 Back in Izzy's career! Only 2 swimmers broke 53 sec leading off their relays amongst the entire field (East & West editions of this meet), I believe (Caitlin Brooks, 2019 UK commit, had put forth a 52.26 PB to put her team in the initial lead). Izz was quite a mite faster than even her friend Alex Walsh's 53.25...

Furthermore - hadn't realised until now that Izzy had busted out a significant personal record in the 100 Back just last Friday at the Florida GSC Holiday Classic meet!

That 51.73 PR of Isabel's from 30 Nov manages to just eclipse Keeks' 51.83 PB from 2018 Pac-12s, and in effect earns Ivey the distinction of being the fastest active Bear in this event starting next season, assuming that Keaton doesn't leapfrog her in turn lol (actually, perhaps even earlier, if Billy doesn't fully recover in time!)

If the rumour that Izzy isn't anywhere near a full taper at these Winter Juniors (cos of saving it for 2019 NCAAs) can be taken at face value, then Izzy already seeing a lifetime best in the 50 Free + 50 Back on top of coming within striking distance in the 200 IM has to be rather encouraging news to Bears!

Without the benefit of a full rest, a bright talent like Izzy would in some cases still be eminently capable of breaking personal records, particularly in the 50 sprints...but would face an increasing uphill battle against the clock the further up they go in terms of distance, trying to fend off the inevitable lactic acid buildup as fatigue ultimately sets in.

Chloe will also be coming to Cal in a month's time, and in contrast Clark looks to be swimming really tired here judging from her adding quite a bit of time, which would make sense...

The sobering counterpoint - Teri's going to face quite a massive challenge with regards to getting Isabel primed for Nattys in such a compressed period, juggling difficult decisions on how much rest would be optimal @ Pac-12s in order to comfortably earn an invite with an advantageous seeding.

Guess we should have more data points at our disposal when/if Isabel attempts her tough treble tomorrow (entered in the 100 Fly, 200 Free & 100 Back - yikes!)...

btw, hope bearz012 will share on the board their observant analysis & take on how some of the other swimmers are performing at this meet, in comparison to our 2019 Baby Bears (notably 2020 prospects, & 2019 commits who we have at one point identified a need for but who ended up signing with other programmes) :p

Speaking of 2020 prospects (tedbear may vehemently disagree lol):
REGAN SMITH BREAKS NATIONAL AGE GROUP RECORD ON RELAY LEADOFF

And how about that wicked 46.78 anchor from Gretchen Walsh on the 400 MR tonight???!! A time that starts to approach Abbey-esque territory, from a HS sophomore to boot, crikey!!! Her 21.82 in the 50 Free wasn't half bad either lol

So, @ Izzy & Ema - please continue to work on recruiting Gretchen to the blue & gold, as you two had so diligently poured your energies & charismatic energies into during your 2018 Pan Pacs Juniors & Mel Zajac adventures...

15-YEAR OLD GRETCHEN WALSH SPLITS 46.7 ON MEDLEY RELAY ANCHOR

    Pardon for not posting anything for the morning heats as am engaged elsewhere, but will try to make up for it somewhat after the conclusion of finals tonight (not a firm promise tho :p)

    Will briefly mention that Izzy continues to impress, with her new PB of 52.24 for the top seed in the 100 Fly (prev best was a 52.61 from 2016 Winter Jr Nats), well done!

    Also laid down the 2nd fastest prelims time in the 200 Free... and apparently going for a challenging treble in the 100 Back later on in the session... !

    (apologies on this not being a UAC-like summary :/)

    Finals Day 3:

    1650 Free- Sarah DiMeco drops 10.04 secs from her seed time of 16:19.78 to place 3rd in a time of 16:09.74 at the West meet in Austin. Over in Greensboro, at the East meet, Anna Kalandadze and Rachel Klinker go 16:36.05 and 16:39.01 for 8th and 10th, respectively.

    200 Back- Ayla Spitz and Danielle Carter take 2nd and 4th in the B final (10th and 12th overall) with times of 1:56.31 and 1:57.34 at the West meet.

    100 Free- Isabel Ivey drops 0.65 secs from this morning to take 2nd in a speedy 48.32 in Greensboro. In Austin, Ayla Spitz, swimming in her 2nd B final of the day, drops 1.08 secs and wins her heat by almost a second in a time of 48.97. Chloe Clark takes advantage of being scratched in to the C final tonight by swimming to a 2nd place finish in her heat with a time of 49.74, a 0.71 drop from this morning.

    200 Breast- None of our Bears swam this in prelims or finals, but do have to note that 2020 recruit Alex Walsh swam a 2:06.02 at the East meet to win it all, en route to a Juniors meet record.

    200 Fly- After swimming the mile, Rachel Klinker swims to an 8th place finish in this event with a time of 1:59.85 at the East meet. Out West, Ashlyn Fiorilli wins the B final (9th overall) with a time of 1:58.79 and a 0.98 second drop.

    400 Free Relay- Last event! Isabel Ivey swam the 2nd leg on her team's 10th place relay, splitting a 49.30 at the East meet. Note: this event was swam in the prelims at the East meet due to an incoming storm. Don't think the West meet concluded yet, but will update once the data is retrieved.
