Distance:

-Ashlyn and Chenoa 23rd and 24th in the mile. Ashlyn clocked a 16:59.39, annihilating her old LTB of 17:58.16 set at a club meet in 2017. Chenoa went a 17:03.24, off her best of 16:37.31 from World Championship Trials last summer.
-Nick Norman on a roll, taking the top time out of the afternoon heats in a 7:54.47! That comes in well under his previous LTB of 8:02.92 set at the Santa Clara PSS. Great swim to end a great meet.

Good stuff this afternoon by these three!! Last finals session tonight, GO BEARS!!

Others of note:

-Reece lost the swim-off from earlier today after he tied for 2nd in the B-final last night. Right now, our best bet is that he will be going to the PanAms next summer in Peru instead of WUGs in Italy.
-Izzy officially got her envelope with the invitation to Junior Pan Pacs in Fiji later in August! She'll be swimming 100 free, on the 4x200 relay, and the 100 fly.

Just wanted to add that Kathleen's 2:08.32 obliterated Julia Smit (Furd)'s 2:09.34 Championship record from the supersuit era, and Katinka Hosszu ($C)'s US Open record of 2:08.66!

I was lol @ how Rowdy was dismissing everyone's chances of beating Mel Margalis until he was reminded at the end of the breast that Thleen was still significantly in the lead... smh

Can't believe she dropped over THREE seconds -- half surprised, half in awe! What a week for the Bears thus far (and the night's not even over). Wow!

The biggest difference between Thleen and everyone else is that her underwaters and turns are far superior. From the get go, her Butterfly underwater put her in the lead after the first 25 meters. Love her shout out to her teammates, Abbey and of course Katie. I really think the IM torch has been passed from Margalis to Kathleen. In four years from now, maybe Kathleen can pass the torch to hopeful future Bear (fingers crossed) Alex Walsh.

Seli gets on the podium in the 200m IM A final (1:58.23, #3=). Over a sec faster than his prev PB of 1:59.24 from this morning!

Prenot 5th (1:58.57)

Julian 3rd with a 1:59.93 in the B final - also a lifetime best (former best = 2:00.70 from prelims).

Yup, Little Bean's old PR = 2:11.58 from Mare Nostrum just last month. Prior to then, her lifetime best was 2:12.09 all the way back in May 2015!

I shook my head when Rowdy made the comment that "breast was her weakest stroke"...

Def +1 on Thleen's shoutout to her teammates...she's a loyal Bear even when training w/her club coach during the summer holidays!

Baker is now the fastest American in textile (she leapfrogs margarlis, levrence, dirado, And kukors!)
HINT OF LIME said:

Absolutely wow for Baker. Not that she was underrated or overlooked coming into this past week, but with the (rightful) buzz surrounding backstroke competition w/ Smith, Smoliga, DeLoof, Bacon, Stadden, etc., and not being previously seriously considered for the IM, Baker has definitely exceeded expectations with the 100 WR and the win in the IM tonight! Great for her.

Congrats Abbey on claiming runner-up in the 50m Free A final with a 24.63!

That ranks as the 5th fastest time that Weitzeil's ever swum, and the swiftest that she has gone since Rio! She's back - and we couldn't be more happy for her!!

KATHLEEN BAKER BREAKS U.S. OPEN RECORD IN 200 IM

Baker's best time coming into 2018 was a 2:12, and she's now the second-fastest American in history.

After breaking a World Record in the 200 IM on Saturday, Kathleen Baker wasn't done with her meet yet. On Sunday, she broke the US Open and Championship records in the women's 200 IM with a 2:08.32

The previous U.S. Open Record holder was Katinka Hosszu (who also happens to be the World Record holder) with a 2:08.66 swum at the 2015 Charlotte Pro Swim Series stop. The Championship Record was even older a 2:09.34 done by Julia Smit at the 2009 edition, super-suited, in Indy.

...no active American has been faster than Baker's 2:08.32 from Sunday evening. Baker now becomes the 14th-best performer in the history of this event, and 2nd-fastest American, behind only Ariana Kukors.

...she's now swum her 4 fastest times in this event this year alone.

Top 5 Americans All-Time, 200 IM:
  • Ariana Kukors 2:06.15, 2009
  • Kathleen Baker 2:08.32, 2018
  • Melanie Margalis 2:08.70, 2017
  • Maya DiRado 2:08.79, 2016
  • Caitlin Leverenz 2:08.95, 2012

Nick Norman's accomplishment all that much "sweeter", as his 7:54.47 eclipsed the 7:56.08 swum in the A final by LSJU's True Sweetser, and the 8:05.69 by Grant Shoults (to be fair, Grant seems to be a good guy, and a buddy of several swim Bears )

FINAL 2018 PROJECTED U.S. PAN PACS ROSTER

The final night of U.S. Nationals has wrapped, and we've done the math to put together what we project as the American roster for the Pan Pacific Championships.

From what we've found, only three swimmers from priority 3 (athletes who took 3rd in an event this week) will make the team in each gender: Justin Ress, Sean Grieshop and Austin Katz for men and Haley Anderson, Ella Eastin and one more for women. (Those are based on our compiling of 'modified world ranks' on the fly, so bear with us there as well).

The final women's spot appears to be a world ranks tie between Erica Sullivan and Isabelle Stadden. One possible outcome is that Anderson or Twichell cedes their pool spot, as they've already qualified in open water and could still enter pool events at Pan Pacs without taking an official pool roster spot. Another possibility is that Eastin declines the team to rest up from mono, taking a likely World University Games roster spot for next summer and calling it a season.

Each meet has its own unique selection criteria, but all break down by priority: priority 1 will be selected first, priority 2 only if there is roster space remaining after that, priority 3 only if there is roster space remaining and so on. Below, we'll track who's in line to qualify for what team, moving to lower priorities as sufficient doubles are met.

Though the meet is over, these rosters aren't yet set in stone. 2018 rosters can change if swimmers decline their spots, and 2019 rosters can change if swimmers decline spots or based on results of the Pan Pacific meet.

All 2019 rosters hinge on the results of 2018 Pan Pacs, which affect 2019 Worlds selection (and therefore the trickle-down of athletes to 2019 World University Games and 2019 Pan Ams).

Others:
-Jensen, Norman, Bryce, Trenton, Isabel likely onto WUGs
-Daniel Carr, Shields and Reece Whitley are slated into Pan Am Games
-Isabel and Reece onto Junior Pan Pacs

Sean and Abbey still on WUGs roster, but gut feeling is that Weitzeil should move on to Worlds, but the game is still in play for Grieshop. Reece lost the swimoff today, and the amount of doubles needed for it to matter happened, but no new information has been released
