Yayay! Bears unleashed a 3:25.24 to win the 400 Medley Relay

School record!!! Really nice splits all around, Ema down into the mid 58s on breast, Katie with a 50 flat, and Abbey finishing things off with a 45.87 to finish amost 2 sec ahead of 2nd place IU who were powered by Lilly King's 55.67 split on breast.

Came oh so agonisingly close to LSJU's 3:25.09 record from 2018 NCAAs...

And...

California Narrowly Misses NCAA, American Records in 400 Medley Relay

The California Golden Bears won the 400 medley relay on Thursday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with a 3:25.24 for their second relay win of the night.

Amy Bilquist (50.84), Ema Rajic (58.53), Katie McLaughlin (50.00) and Abbey Weitzeil (45.87) won the title for the Golden Bears as Bilquist got them off to a lead on the first leg. Indiana's Lilly King (55.67) pulled the Hoosiers within the lead at the halfway point and fellow senior Christie Jensen (51.47) hung on to that lead through 300, but it was not enough for junior Shelby Koontz (47.68) on the anchor leg. The Hoosiers finished in second place for the second straight year with that swim.

Top seed Michigan was in seventh place at the halfway point and crawled its way back into contention with Maggie MacNeil (50.34) and Siobhan Haughey (46.51) on the back half for the Wolverines.
Indiana's team of Morgan Scott (52.19), King (55.67), Jensen (51.47) and Koontz (47.68) finished in second at 3:27.01 as Big Ten rival Michigan was third at 3:27.49. The Wolverines had Taylor Garcia (52.50), Miranda Tucker (58.14), MacNeil (50.34) and Haughey (46.51) swimming for them.

Cal's win tonight also ends Stanford's five-year winning streak in the event as the Cardinal placed sixth at 3:28.45.

Cal now has four NCAA titles in the 400 medley relay. The 2019 team joins the likes of the teams from 2007, 2011 and 2012 as winners of the event for the Golden Bears.

2019 WOMEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY 2 SCORING UPDATE

The night session belonged to the Cal women. They gained 16 points over their seeds from this morning, the most of any team in the field.

However the day belonged to Stanford. Stanford picked up 57.5 points over their seeds on the psych sheet in swimming events and hold a half point lead in the overall standings (complete current scores are below the Scoring Details table).

Adding the seeded points from the next two days to the current score Stanford now project to a 54 point win over Cal. Given Stanford's performance vs seed so far, that margin may end up being much bigger by Saturday evening.

The team race picture appears to be solidifying. Cal's lead over for 2nd Michigan is looking more and more solid. Cal now project to an 83 point win over the Wolverines. Michigan in turn have a 59 point projected final margin over NC State for 3rd.

Lady bears really clawed their ways out of adversity.

Stopped halfway at Pac-2017. Cried in disappointment at NC-2018. Now, won 3 races while breaking 2 records. What a day for Abby Weitzeil !

-- Overcoming their well-documented injuries, Bilquist & McLaughlin kept improving. Just in time for Tokyo 2020.
-- Blovad finally got points at NC after 3 years of hard work.
-- Ivey got out of her 2-year plateau in leaps and bounds.
-- Murphy is working to get back up.
-- Rajic & Harrison showed bears knew how to swim breaststroke.

Cal's Dynamic Duo: Abbey Weitzeil, Amy Bilquist Lead Record Night for Bears

    by DANIEL D'ADDONA

    21 March 2019, 07:55pm

When Amy Bilquist and Abbey Weitzeil chose Cal, they knew national-championship performances were in their future.

The duo has been part of a handful of relay titles, but there was always the sense that their best was still ahead. There was always an injury or something in the way of their best individual performance.

    Until Thursday.

Weitzeil and Bilquist became Cal's dynamic duo on the first full night of the 2019 NCAA Division I women's championships in record-breaking fashion.

They teamed up to win two relays and each turned in the best individual performance of their careers - all in the same night. And in the team race, it has the Golden Bears just a half point behind Stanford heading into Day 3 (173.5-173).

"We have really wanted to show everyone what Cal can do," Weitzeil said. "We have had up and down years with injuries and such. We just wanted to do it for each other and show everyone what we can do. Having it pay off - so far at least - has been pretty awesome."

It started with a dynamic relay performance to open the session, as Maddie Murphy, Katie McLaughlin, Bilquist and Weitzeil broke the American record in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.55.

"Knowing I can trust everyone on that relay to do what I know they can do so I can bring it home was awesome," Weitzeil said.

Bilquist split a 20.87 before Weitzeil stunningly split a 20.49.
    Quote:

"That relay is my baby. Freshman and sophomore year, we won it. Junior year, got second. It is so great to come back as a senior (and win). I knew we had it in us," Bilquist said.

"It is a hard feeling to explain when you just turn around and see your teammates, you make eye contact, and you just know what is about to happen. Watching Maddie dive in, I knew we had it. We all feed off of each other's energy. It has been awesome."
The duo carried that momentum into the 50 free. If Weitzeil's relay split was stunning, her 50 free was a step past stunning as she set the American and NCAA record in dominant fashion, finishing in 21.02.

It crushed her previous American record of 21.12 and Erika Brown's NCAA mark of 21.15.

"I have been waiting for that for a long time," Weitzeil said. "To have it finally pay off is awesome."

But the bigger smile might have been on Bilquist's face after finishing sixth in the same event, clocking a career-best 21.52.

"I wanted to be in the 'A' final all four years, and I finally did it," Bilquist said. "I went a best time in prelims and finals, and I can't tell you the last time I did that. It felt really good."

It was one of those moments in a meet that could go overlooked, but the rest of her team knew what that best time and final meant to Bilquist.

"I train next to her all the time. She works so hard and has gone through so many things. Being able to have her make the 'A' final with me - we call that a party heat when we have more than one that is our goal, and it was so awesome for that to pay off, especially her senior year," Weitzeil said.

If that wasn't a good enough night for the Bears, Weitzeil and Bilquist teamed McLaughlin and Ema Rajic to win the 400 medley relay to close the session with a pool record 3:25.24.

Cal is in the hunt for the NCAA title despite missing the points of national champion Kathleen Baker, who opted to turn professional after her junior year.
    Quote:

"We just try to focus on ourselves. A lot of people say, 'Oh you are missing Kathleen and all of those points,' but she was more than just points. She was a teammate and was awesome in every aspect.

"It is hard to fill that gap, but we just have to look at it a different way. It is not filling a gap. No one is Kathleen. It is rallying around what we have now and being in the present with this team."
    It is working.

If the Bears can continue to ride this momentum, this could be one of the closest NCAA meets in history.

Just got done watching the replay. Sorry, some of us have to work.

What a great day for our Bears!!!! So proud and happy for Abbey! When she first committed to Cal, our expectations for her were through the roof, even if we had to wait a year for her arrival. Subsequently, we were all a little surprised with her struggles in her first two years, as she made the transition to new coaches, new environment, and of course school, which all of our student athletes go through. But sometimes the hardships make the victory that much sweeter, and we all got to experience that with her today as she crushed two new NCAA and American records.

Katie and Amy are going to be irreplaceable next year for so many reasons. Both are four relay swimmers, both are some of the best in Cal history in their specialties, the Fly and Back respectively. And both are tremendous representatives of the team and the University. They both overcame huge obstacles with injuries during their careers here, but they both persevered and showed tremendous character through the process. They might not win a NC in their four years, but it's great to see them go out with great successes in their final meet. Two all-time great Cal Bears!

Good to see our younger Bears do well too. Isabel definitely shows promise in the 200 IM, and Ema might be our best breaststroker since Caitlyn. If Sarah was with us, I can assure you that we would be ahead of the Furd right now in the standings. We are going to miss her IM points.

On to tomorrow and Katie's insane double again. Roll on you Bears!
