Texas divers go 3 and 7, score 28 points. IU diver Capobiano wins, 20 points to IU. They're solidly third right now.

2019 MEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 3 SCORING SUMMARY

Cal inched closer to ending Texas's title run tonight. Cal own a 43 point lead and are seeded to score 28 more swimming points than Texas tomorrow. Texas can close that seeded points gap tomorrow with diving they've scored 27 and 28 on the two boards so far- but the 43 point lead will be a significant hurdle.

There's another trend pointing Cal's way: Cal have out gained Texas vs the psych sheet in swimming points each of the last two days. Cal picked up 61 points over seed today. Texas gained 54. A net of +7 for Cal. Yesterday Cal were +43 by that metric. To win Texas will have to be around +40 tomorrow not an impossible task, but not in line with what we've seen so far at this meet.

Cal have quite a few high seeds tomorrow which will make gaining points vs seed a bit more difficult, but clear pick up opportunities exist.

Ryan Hoffer , the 50 free champion, is seeded 24th in the 100. 500 free runner up Sean Grieshop is seeded 13th in the mile. Trenton Julian who went the 4th fastest 500 time at the meet in a B final is 18th in the 200 fly. None of those are guarantees of big points, but with 160 seeded points, Cal aren't even close to maxed out.

Not to mention, it's looking pretty good that we won't really need to use up a year of Hugo's eligibility after all in order to stand a more than decent chance of denying the Horns a 5-peat either

A few more highlights from last night:

Heading out - but let's cheer on our Bears to seal the deal with yet another smashing over-performance in this morning's heats, whilst those Longhorns are still reeling from Haas losing big to Seli (& 2 other finalists) in the 200 Free + Daniel's clutch 100 Back re-swim last night, with their divers unable to dig their swim team out of a hole unlike last year - methinks Austin is just about to become Bear Territory!!!

On a side note, can't believe that an Ivy League, Harvard, is presently seated in the #8 spot with 98 points...regardless of all those Dean Farris memes lol, pretty certain Knapp (LSJU @ #15, 69 pts) & Salo ('SC @ #12, 75 pts) aren't exactly too chuffed that their fully-funded but under-achieving teams (loaded with top domestic & international recruits) are in this unenviable position, with only 1 more finals session to go... :p

2019 MEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 4 PRELIMS LIVE RECAP

It's the final prelims session of what has been an explosive and unpredictable men's NCAA Championships. Though Texas was considered the favorite coming in, Cal has been lights-out so far and are now the team to beat with two sessions remaining. It's very likely the meet is decided this morning, based on how many scoring swims each team accrues.

Cal leads Texas by 43 at the moment, with Indiana 51.5 behind Texas and NC State 62.5 behind IU. That means it'll take a pretty massive morning for any of those teams to catch the program ahead of them. Where things get less clear-cut, though, is beyond the top 7. From 9th to 18th, the largest margin between two programs is a mere 6 points the equivalent of one 11th-place finish individually or a single 14th-place relay. That means a whole host of teams are in the mix for the last few spots in the top 10, and the current programs in those spots could fall a long ways with a bad day 4.

Onto today's events: the big showdown of the day is probably Andrew Seliskar vs. Ian Finnerty in the 200 breast. Last year, Finnerty went out hard but Seliskar clawed back, only for Finnerty to win a touchout by .25. This year, Seliskar is 2-for-2 after dominating the 200 IM and besting three-time defending champ Townley Haas in the 200 free. Finnerty did defend his 100 breast title last night, though, and the two should be in line for a great battle tonight, along with a host of top freshmen, including Seliskar's Cal teammate Reece Whitley.

The 100 free might be the most exciting event, because it still feels relatively wide open. Dean Farris has felt unstoppable at times this week, and won the 100 back last night. But while his 200 free opening the 800 free relay was the best in history by a longshot, his 50 free wasn't overly dominant. So the question is whether he can beat a bunch of 50/100 specialists in the sprintier 100. There are a bunch of contenders in that race, including 200 free runner-up Zach Apple of Indiana (who split 40.6 on Indiana's 400 medley relay) and 50 free champ Ryan Hoffer, who was the best high school 100 freestyler in history and seems to be past a freshman year plateau in the sprint freestyles.

Prelims finish with the 400 free relay, where Texas holds the top seed with Louisville in tow. We'll continue our daily coverage with timed final mile heats and platform diving, before a national champion is crowned after tonight's finals session.

2019 MEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAY 4 SCORED PRELIMS

Cal did enough this morning to virtually guarantee they win their first NCAA men's team title since 2014.

Cal picked up 21 points over their seeds in events this morning. Texas dropped 13 points. Adding the actual scores to this morning's scored prelims and the psych sheet scoring of the 1650, Cal have a 553 to 448 advantage over Texas. 105 points is pretty much a lock.

If Cal DQ their 400 free relay, Texas win the relay, and Texas go 1-2 on the platform, Cal will still have a 20 point cushion. No team has gained 20 points over their seeds in a night session all week the biggest pick up was Cal's 19 on day 2.

Last time I was in Austin, Goff was QB and within three weeks of the Cal win, Bevo died. The swim complex is right next to the football stadium, so another Bevo's life looks to be in peril. If there are any SPCA chapters in Texas, they should probably find one ginornous plastic bubble ASAP to protect their precious big ass cow.
