On a bit of a side note, LSJU would not have made finals in this relay if Grand Canyon hadn't DQ'ed, Had placed 6th in the A final last year. And @ the 800 Free relay last night, Stanford placed 15th, compared to 8th the year before.

Wow Furds didn't make the 400MR finals, coming in 18th! Doesn't bold well for their coach.

Our turn -- Bears sneak into A-final at 7th, prelims line-up of Mefford, Sand, Quah, Jensen.

per swimswam

Cal swam potentially four different legs from tonight's relay and nearly got burned by it. They were 3:04.48, 7th place and just four tenths out of missing the A final. Michael Jensen was 41.6 on the anchor leg, which is a good sign for Cal moving forward. He could be swapped out tonight, though. Bryce Mefford, Carson Sand and Zheng Quah swam this morning, but we'd expect to see Daniel Carr on back tonight, with perhaps Reece Whitley or Andrew Seliskar on breast, Seliskar or Ryan Hoffer on fly and perhaps Hoffer or Pawel Sendyk on free.

Think my heart skipped a beat ..but have something to look forward in tonight's race!

I think I saw Hoffer talking some smack to the Texas cheering section right after his race. He gave them the "call me" sign. He also flexed for them once he hopped out of the pool. It looks like Cal is not being shy about letting Texas know we're coming for them.

Hoffer's emotional and he has swag to spare. Was really jazzed with his 50 Free during the LSJU and slapped the water and immediately looked up at the Young Bear Bros alums to salute them. Sand has a similar swag. Seli less so than the other two.

This team loves to compete, so swimming in Austin will fire them up, not intimidate them. They knew they were way better than LSJU, but they swam with joy and celebrated each other without clowning the 'Furds. Women's team took it all in and looked a lot more loose and free at NCAAs relative to their LSJU dual.

LSJU and 'SC men are the exact opposite: tight and joyless. Inexcusable for 'SC not to manage even a B cut all season in the 800 Free Relay. Helps explain why double Trojan legacy Julian escaped and is thriving at Cal.

LSJU barely squeaked by Grand Canyon in the 400 Medley Relay. Four Corners would've smoked them.

LSJU and 'SC are fully funded and have amazing facilities, yet they're getting curbstomped by Farris and Harvard. Oski loves Knapp and Salo.

Actually, 19th

Furd was 6th in the A final last year on this relay (400 MR), after adding time from their prelims back then - this morning's time was almost 3 sec slower for the Cardinal than their 2018 prelims swim.

One can make the excuse that the Trees are without their stars Shoults & Levant, but still...

OBear, please don't jinx it for us lol - I'd rather LSJU retain Ted Knapp to maintain LSJU's consistent history of placing in the Top 15 nationally but never higher than #5 since their current coach's tenure starting @ 2013 NCAAs...

As otherwise they may attempt perhaps to poach Durden as Knapp's replacement (as they did with Dave's good friend & former Cal Associate Head Coach Meehan, who went on to assemble the fearsome Furdette Juggernaut), or hire some up-and-coming superstar coach who may turn their programme around and start to become a real threat to Bears, Horns, Hoosiers & the Wolfpack... :p

Come to think of it, those Trojans aren't exactly having the meet of their lives in these early stages either - take a look at their relay results up to this point, compared to last season:

800 Free Relay: 12th (2018) -> Did not qualify for NCAAs! (2019)
200 Free Relay: 5th (2018) -> 14th seed in prelims (2019)
400 Medley Relay: 3rd (2018) -> 5th seed in prelims (2019) - thanks largely to Vissering busting out 2nd swiftest breast split

Ryan Hoffer - #1 seed

btw, Connor was on fire in his earlier dives having placed as high as in the Top 8 (A final)...but the last two rounds pushed him down to 18th, so tantalisingly just outside of scoring in the consols finals of the 1 metre springboard. Nevertheless, a really valiant & outstanding effort on Callahan's part!

Horns as expected qualified a pair of divers for the A final tonight - but their other 2 divers ended up in the 26th & 38th spots (former actually scored @ 10th last year)...

An angry swim for Trenton, it looked like, after barely missing the A final. I'll be looking forward to seeing him in the A final next year! Great time, he would've qualified fourth in the A final with it.

ANDREW SELISKAR SMASHES CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD WITH 1:38.1 200 IM

This morning in prelims at the 2019 Men's NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, Cal senior Andrew Seliskar became the 5th man ever to break 1:40 in the 200 IM. He blew that away tonight, becoming the 2nd man to break 1:39 as he won his first individual NCAA title in 1:38.14. That broke his own Pool Record of 1:39.90 from prelims and the Championship Record of 1:39.38 done by David Nolan back in 2014.

Seliskar's splits (finals/prelims):
  • Fly- 21.58/21.87
  • Back- 24.46/24.83
  • Breast- 28.05/28.52
  • Free- 24.05/24.68
  • Final Time- 1:38.14/1:39.90
Seliskar's time was just a hundredth shy of the American Record, which stands at a 1:38.13 done by Florida's Caeleb Dressel at the 2018 SEC Championships. Throughout today, he's now dropped almost 2.5 seconds in his 200 IM. The back half was where Seliskar really took control. Through the backstroke leg, NC State's Andreas Vazaios was the leader, but Seliskar took over on the breaststroke leg with a 28.05. He moved nearly a second ahead of Vazaios on the closing freestyle split alone.
