2019 SANTA CLARA INTERNATIONAL MEET PSYCHS POSTED

Katie McL
The meet will take place June 6-9 at the George F. Haines International Aquatic Center in Santa Clara.

In the past, Santa Clara was home to the last stops for the Pro Swim Series, serving as a final tune-up for elites before heading off to the summer's big championship meets. In lieu of Santa Clara, Clovis will now be the final stop of the Pro Swim Series, which will be June 12-15.

Among the notable names on the psych sheets are a number of Cal and Stanford swimmers.

From the Cal squad, Abbey Weitzeil will be joined by Katie McLaughlin and Cassidy Bayer alongside many other men's team members (Arvidsson, N. Biondi, Forker, Hatch, Jhong, Young).

Weitzeil is listed to swim the 50s and 100s of free and fly. Meanwhile, Bayer will swim the 50-100-200 fly and the 200/400 free.

But all eyes are on McLaughlin after her stunning swims from the Speedo Grand Challenge earlier this month. While not swimming the 200 fly, McLaughlin is scheduled to swim the 50/100 free, 50/100 fly, and the 200 free.

On the women's side, several internationals: Marina Garcia (ESP), Camille Cheng (HKG), Stephanie Au (HKG)

Also a 2020 international recruit of potential interest, #37 Natalie Kan (HKG)

...all aforementioned names are scheduled to compete in all 3 stops of the Mare Nostrum tour.

-----
  • 11-12 June 2019 - Canet
Izzy Ivey: 100m Free (24th seed), 200m Free (19th), 200m Back (15th), 200m Fly (16th)

Izzy will be repping Team USA via the National Junior Team, along with other standout talents such as 2021 sprint recruit (#1 ranked) Gretchen Walsh

A pair of uncommitted 2020 internationals to take note of here: #19 Hanna Henderson (CAN) & #49 Ellen Walshe (IRL). Henderson will also make an appearance @ the Barcelona stop.

-----
  • 15-16 June 2019 - Barcelona
Izzy Ivey: 100m Back (22nd seed), 50m Free (28th), 100m Fly (13th), 200m Free (16th), 50m Fly (33rd), 100m Free (20th), 200m Back (18th seed), 200m IM (24th)

Robin Neumann: 100m Back (32nd seed), 50m Free (29th), 200m Free (19th), 100m Free (21st), 200m Back (28th)

Hmmm, funny how Izzy & Robin are seeded right next to each other in the 50m Free & 100m Free! :p

Reckon this meet may represent a final tune-up opportunity for Robin before she goes on to tackle the Dutch Open (or Sette Colli) the following week in a final bid to snag that still vacant second 200m Free individual spot for Worlds (Neumann should already be eligible for their 4x200m Free relay)??

From SwimSwam:

SHYMANOVICH, EFIMOVA HEADLINE SPRINT-HEAVY PSYCHS FOR MARE NOSTRUM MONACO

"The Mare Nostrum series kicks off on Saturday in Monaco, the first of three stops. With plenty of money on the line, this first stop features plenty of international stars, including a bevy of sprinters.

On the women's side, Yulia Efimova of Russia leads the way in the breaststrokes. She fell short to Lilly King last weekend at the final stop of the FINA Champions Series, but she's the heavy favorite in all three breaststrokes at this meet. She'll still face some strong competitors, like Spaniards Jessica Vall and Marina Garcia as well as GBR's Siobhan Marie O'Connor.

A contingent of other Americans will be in attendance, too, for the men. Cal Aquatics is bringing Tom Shields, Ryan Hoffer, Matthew Josa, Reece Whitley, and Justin Lynch."

-----

TV AND BROADCASTING SCHEDULE FOR THE 2019 MARE NOSTRUM TOUR MONACO

"Olympic Channel will be broadcasting the event's finals live for the three stops.

On both days, the Olympic Channel will begin coverage at 11am ET. Those with subscriptions to the Olympic Channel can access that coverage online here and on the Olympic Channel on TV.

The Olympic Channel will follow the rest of the series live, stopping next at stop 2 in Canet, France, as well as stop 3 in Barcelona, Spain."

*Night 1* finals at the 2019 Speedo Grand Challenge held in long course metres @ William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, Irvine

Katie McLaughlin
-> #3, *200m IM* A final - 2:15.57 PB (old best = 2:15.59 from 2016)
-> #3, *50m Free* A final - 25.52 (best = 25.19 from 2018)

Just a quick (incomplete) update as I'm out & abouts for the long weekend, and Night 2 of the Speedo Grand Challenge isn't yet at the half way mark as I'm writing...

- Katie McLaughlin won the *200m Free* super final in 1:57.62...sole sub-2 minute swim amongst the entire field of 85.

Really promising performance here, as Bug has been faster than that on only 3 other occasions, with her top 2 swims coming from 2018 Pan Pacs (best = 1:56.88), i.e. in full taper mode back then, unlike here.

For a bit of context, only 2 swimmers went faster in this event at the Bloomington PSS & Atlanta Classic meets last week - furdette Olympians Ledecky (1:55.80) & Manuel (1:57.24).

McL will be following up with a tough double in the *100m Fly*, as will Izzy who looks to be a bit beaten up in heavy training judging by her times thus far at this meet.

https://instagr.am/p/Bx59tW7AM6f

A few quick stats from the last session of the 2019 Speedo Grand Challenge.

Katie McLaughlin
-> #1, *200m Fly* A final - 2:09.52...Fastest time since Kazan 2015! (best = 2:06.95 from that 2015 World Champs)
-> #1, *100m Free* A final - 54.46 (best = 54.14 from 2018 Pan Pacs)

Katie McLaughlin on Recent Bursts of Speed: 'I Wasn't Trying to Throw Down'

Katie McLaughlin raised her fist and let out some emotion when she finished third in the 100 fly at the NCAA championships.

Her swim (49.97) broke the Cal school record set by Natalie Coughlin and was part of a double in which McLaughlin earned All-American honors in both events.

She had done the double the year before, also finishing top eight in both events, but this was different. McLaughlin surprised herself with how fast she could go.
Quote:

"I saw the board and I was like, '49.9, Wow!' then I was like, 'Wait that's me! Oh my gosh!" McLaughlin said after the race.

Her big moment is coming up at the world championships, her first trip to the meet since 2015 when she qualified as a high school senior.

McLaughlin will get to swim that 100 fly at worlds, an event that continues to improve for the recent Cal graduate.

McLaughlin hopes a strong worlds could lead to a strong Olympic year. In 2016, she made the finals in Omaha but not the team after sustaining a neck injury earlier in the year.

With all of her NCAA daily double success and being in the middle of what appears to be a breakout year, McLaughlin is truly becoming one of the world's best, even if she isn't getting the attention of some of her USA teammates.

She is just fine with that.

"I don't need to have the attention. I don't mind not being part of that group of big names," she said. "Wearing a Cal cap or a USA cap is the biggest honor. That is what motivates me the most."

It might just lead to a breakout performance on the world stage.

KATIE MCLAUGHLIN HITS 57.7 100 FLY AT DAY 2 FINALS IN SANTA CLARA

After putting together an impressive preliminary swim in the women's 100 fly this morning, Cal's Katie McLaughlin was even faster tonight to win the event going away at day 2 finals of the Santa Clara International meet.

McLaughlin put up a time of 57.77, the second-fastest performance of her career, to establish a new season-best and move her into 13th in the world for 2019 (her morning swim was 57.96). Her PB was done last summer in Irvine in 57.51.

The 21-year-old McLaughlin also had a near-lifetime best swim in the 100 free, where she finished in the runner-up position to teammate Abbey Weitzeil. Weitzeil won in 54.05, a new season-best, and McLaughlin was a tenth back in 54.15, just off her best of 54.14 from last summer's Pan Pacs.

  • Colby Mefford had the fastest swim of his career outside of the 2018 Speedo Junior Nationals to win the men's 200 back in 2:06.34, with Cal's Ethan Young the runner-up in 2:07.34.
  • Christopher Jhong of Cal won the men's 400 IM in 4:30.72.
  • Cal's Katherine Kustritz cracked 32 seconds for the first time to win the women's 50 breast, clocking 31.97 after going a best of 32.09 in the morning.

STEPHANIE AU SHATTERS HONG KONG 50 BACK NATIONAL RECORD IN MONACO

"Competing at the opening leg of the Mare Nostrum Tour in Monaco, Stephanie Au of Hong Kong set a new National Record in the women's 50 back in a time of 27.98.

Au's swim shatters her previous record of 28.33, which she originally set at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona and then equalled less than two months ago at a Time Trial in Hong Kong.

Her time ties her for 17th in the world this year.

The 27-year-old is a three-time Olympian and is the holder of three other Hong Kong National LCM Records in the 400 free, 800 free, and 100 back.

Also impressing for the country on the first of two days at the competition was Siobhan Haughey, who won the women's 200 free in a time of 1:56.05. That fell just .09 shy of her national mark of 1:55.96 set at the 2017 World Championships, and also put her fifth in the world this year.

Haughey's win was also the first ever for Hong Kong at the Mare Nostrum Series, and Au is in prime position to make it two tomorrow."

SIOBHAN HAUGHEY, STEPHANIE AU BREAK HONG KONG RECORDS IN MONACO

"Stephanie Au and Siobhan Haughey became the latest swimmers to break Hong Kong National Records, continuing a run over the last 3 months by their swimmers.

Au swam a 27.98 in the 50 backstroke (LCM) on Saturday in Monaco on day 1 of the 2019 Mare Nostrum series. That swim took .35 seconds off her own National Record which was sent jointly in April as well as back in the summer of 2013 at the World Championships. The 27-year old is a former Cal Golden Bear and a 3-time Olympian.

In total, including relays, she now holds a whopping 21 Hong Kong Records: 11 in long course and 10 in short course. 14 of those records are 'senior' records."

Still in progress, but just want to comment that Katie McLaughlin has just lowered her 200m Free lifetime best of 1:56.88 from 2018 Pan Pacs to a studly 1:56.48 this evening!

That represents the 6th fastest time in the world so far this year in this event, shared with NED's Femke Heemskerk, and positions McL as the 2nd fastest American behind only Ledecky (Manuel's currently the 3rd fastest American, about 3/4 of a sec slower than Bug @ #19)..

Nicole Oliva placed 3rd (2:01.10) in this event, followed by Keeks @ 6th (2:02.87)...Mara Allen was 3rd & Madds 6th in the B final.

Oh, and Alicia Wilson has just won the 200m IM, almost 2 seconds ahead of runner-up furdette Brooke Forde, with Nicole (7th) & Elizabeth Bailey (9th) also in the A final.

Note that 2021 recruit Gretchen Walsh had come quite close to her lifetime best of 54.38 from 2018 Nationals, handily winning the B final of the *100m Free* in 54.47.

SPAIN ANNOUNCES 9 SWIMMER ROSTER FOR WORLD C'SHIPS; BELMONTE WILL SWIM 6 EVENTS

The Royal Swimming Spanish Federation (RFEN) has released the official roster that will compete in the pool events at the 2019 World Championships, which will be held from July 21 to 28 in Gwangju (South Korea).

There will be 9 swimmers representing Spain at the World Champs.

All the swimmers added to their Worlds calendar some events for which they were not qualified, what will be a good warm up for their main events. This is the case, for instance, of Marina Garca in the 100 breaststroke.

SWIMMER | CLUB | EVENTS
Marina Garca | CN Sabadell | 100/200 breaststroke
Hugo Gonzalez | Real Canoe | 100/200 backstroke, 200 IM

STEENBERGEN SNAGS SILVER AS HER RETURN TO RACING CONTINUES

2019 DUTCH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - Day 2 Highlights

Robin Newmann was tonight's 100m free victor in 55.52, representing the only swimmer under 56 seconds. Taking silver tonight was Marrit Steenbergen, the now-19-year-old who wreaked havoc on the junior circuit back in 2015/16.

UPDATE: EMA RAJIC BREAKS CROATIAN RECORD IN 50 BREASTSTROKE

2019 CROATIAN OPEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A pair of Croatian Senior Records fell last weekend at the Croatian Open National Championships in Zagreb.

Ema Rajic swam a 32.28 in prelims of the women's 50 breaststroke, which is a FINA "B" cut for the World Championships. She was slower in finals, but her swim will emerge as the National Record at the end of the meet.

ANDREW SELISKAR SWIMS LIFETIME BEST IN 100 FLY AT CAL-STANFORD LONG COURSE DUAL

Another highlight of the day was a pair of wins from Nathan Adrian, who swam his fastest times since returning from treatment for testicular cancer earlier this month. On Saturday, he swam 22.17 in the 50 free and 48.50 in the 100 free. That's compared to times of 22.22 and 49.31 at his other post-surgery meet in Bloomington a month ago. Adrian appears to still be on track for his 400 free relay swim at the World Championships later this summer in spite of the lost training time.

Ryan Murphy, the defending Olympic Champion in the event, won the 200 back in 1:55.77. After a 1:57 in Richmond in April, Murphy's times have been steadily improving this season, culminating with this swim: a new season-best for him by 4-tenths of a second.

  • Andrew Seliskar had his best meet of the season. He swam 1:46.89 in the 200 free and 51.42 in the 100 fly. In the case of the 100 fly, that time is a lifetime-best for him by more than 8-tenths of a second, beating his swim from last summer's National Championships.
  • Cal rising senior Abbey Weitzeil swam 24.82 in the 50 free and 54.05 in the 100 free. Both swims were season bests. The 50 undercut the 24.90 she swam in Santa Clara, while the 100 time matched it exactly. Stanford's Allie Raab swam a lifetime best of 56.37 for 2nd place in that 100 free.
  • Behind Adrian in the 100 free were Cal's Michael Jensen (49.70), Stanford's Jack Levant (51.26 World Championship team member working his way back from health issues), and short course sensation Ryan Hoffer (51.58).
  • 5'8 Daniel Roy of Stanford beat 6'8 Reece Whitley of Cal in the men's 100 breaststroke. Roy swam 1:01.16 while Whitley went 1:01.33. That's a lifetime best for Roy his previous fastest was actually a week ago in Clovis when he swam 1:01.41. Hank Poppe was 3rd in 1:02.26, which is his lifetime best too his first in almost 2 years.
  • Keaton Blovad touched 1st in the 100 back in 1:00.85, while Stanford post-grad Ella Eastin was 2nd in 1:02.35. Eastin's times were not as explosive as other swimmers of her caliber were at the meet, overall. She did win the 200 IM in 2:13.13.

TOP 10 MALE SWIMMERS TO WATCH AT THE 2019 WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

9. PAWEL SENDYK, POLAND

As a junior last season, Sendyk was the NCAA runner-up in the 50 free as part of Cal's national championship run. He skipped Poland's nationals this year, and has only raced in long course at 2 meets in 2019. Last year, he popped a 21.91 at Polish Nationals, but then was way off (22.68) at the European Championships. As Polish sprinting is rising (albeit a lot of that trained in America), Sendyk has an opportunity to win his first international gold medal this week. That is, if he can handle his taper better than he did last season. With no late-May Nationals to worry about like he had in 2018, he should have more freedom to line himself up for this meet.

200 IM Semi-Finals
Alicia Wilson: 2:11.60 - 1st overall - Advances to Finals - = Best Time

Alicia's 2:11.60 here matches her breakout silver-medal-worthy lifetime best @ British Swimming Champs 2019

Super furdette grad Ella Eastin will/should be much faster @ finals in what's a massively competitive field, but Alicia's quite favoured for a medal of some denomination at the rate she's progressing, I reckon

Some interesting Swimswam comments on Alicia & also on Cal v. LSJU... :p
SwimSwam said:

Dee: "Wilson looking a better and better get for Cal every time she swims. She just doesnt have a bad stroke."

PVDH: "Cal is gonna need everything they can get considering the super team assembling down the road."

Dee: "Absolutely, but the really sweet ones must be the 'gets' nobody really notices who turn out to be big point-pullers. Wilson has that potential. Good fly, good back, great IM, decent breast & free She gives Cal options. I'm excited to see how she develops there."

On the go, but just wanted to mention that Bear > Furd here ...much as I like Ella and will be cheering for her when she takes Thleen's spot in this 200m IM race @ Worlds in a fortnight's time... :p

Eastin took the lead on her strong back (tho Alicia kept Ella in her sights with a solid back too), then showed off her breast talent in pulling ahead of the furdette who usually does well on this leg, and in spite of a markedly superior underwater from the Tree on that last wall, Alicia brought it home with a fab determined free charge that didn't fade.

Yet another PB for Alicia, well done!

2019 WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES: DAY 4 FINALS LIVE RECAP

WOMEN'S 200 IM FINALS
Stanford's Ella Eastin made a huge push for first on the backstroke leg, getting ahead of Great Britain's Alicia Wilson at the 100 mark. Although she fell behind Wilson during the breaststroke portion, Eastin had a lead coming off the wall going into the final 50, thanks to a brilliant underwater.

Despite her lead, however, Wilson dominated the last 50, crashing to the wall in a final time of 2:11.35 to take the win by almost a full second. Eastin faded to second with a 2:12.24, holding off a charging Runa Imai of Japan by the slimmest of margins Imai claimed the bronze in 2:12.25.

2019 LOS ANGELES INVITE PSYCH SHEETS ARE LIVE

KT Kustritz, honorary Bear for the summer

Our favorites storyline for this weekend is that of KT Kustritz. She's entered in 4 events, but the one we're watching most closely is the 100 breaststroke. She's the 10th seed, and is racing against swimmers like Canadian Faith Knelson (1:07.91), and Allie Raab (1:08.97) of Stanford. So why is our favorite storyline about a 10th seed? Because she's the fastest 100 breaststroker in NCAA Division III history, and she's spending the summer training with the country's 2nd-best women's team from last season: Cal.

While Kustritz has swum a few long course races since moving to California for the summer, her times haven't been all that noteworthy, and with Summer Nationals looming, it feels like now is the time where we'll start to see some time drops if "the big one" is coming later this summer.

OTHER NAMES TO LOOK FOR AT THE LA INVITE:
------------------------
  • From the rival Cal Bears, Cassidy Bayer, Isabel Ivey, and Keaton Blovad all have high seeds.
  • Tom Shields will join Stewart at those Pan American Games, where he'll swim the 100 fly and 200 fly. As the 2016 Olympic gold medalist continues to work to rebuild his career after missing the primary long course international teams in each of the last 2 years, Lima will be a crucial meet for him.
------------------------

More Bears in LA next weekend:
  • Maddie Murphy
  • Elise Garcia
  • Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou
  • Elizabeth Bailey
  • Natalie Tuck
  • Ali Harrison
  • Courtney Mykkanen
  • Ayla Spitz
  • Aislinn Light

2019 LOS ANGELES INVITE PSYCH SHEETS ARE LIVE

From a quick glance at results... (meet still in progress) Meet mobile had some really wonky (i.e. completely incorrect!) results posted at the time, so I've edited with the proper outcomes...hopefully

Impressed with 2019 Ayla's trademark back half as she almost outsplits the entire field on her final 50, winning the B final of the 100m Free - and edging out Tree Amalie Fackenthal at the finish! (only furdette Lauren Pitzer & Kendyl Stewart, going 2-3 in the A final respectively, had a faster back half, I believe). New lifetime best of 55.96 to boot! (prev personal record = 56.43 from 2018 Junior Nationals). That time would have placed 4th in the A final.

Cass earned 3rd place in the 200m Fly A final, 2:10.94. Sophie takes 7th in the championship final, with Elizabeth winning the C final

Keeks finished 3rd in the 200m Back A final in 2:14.13, ahead of Trojan commit Jade Hannah & Tree Lucie Nordmann, but behind a pair of furdettes in Erin Voss & Allie Szekely.
Blovad's faster 2:13.56 in prelims was actually a PB for her (prev = 2:13.98 @ 2017 Nationals)
1-2-4-5 Bears finish in the 200m Back B final for Coco, 2020 Tea, Aislinn & Sophie

Izzy took 5th in the A final of the 400m IM. Tackling a number of off events in this meet, likely for training purposes.
Furdettes 1 - 3 here (boo! haha)
