Per usa swimming,
Ranked 33: 22.14 -- Murphy, Maddie -- SR -- California B -- 02/27/2020

It appears she'll get her individual swims at ncaa.

Looks like the same thing that happened to her in the last NCCA 'ship, where she jammed her shoulder or wrist touching the wall. She is such a competitor especially in a bang bang event like the 50 sprint!

400 IM prelims:

Stanford distance depth stacking 4 swimmers into the A-final, taking the top 3 spots (and 6th seed with Forde, Szekely, Kukurugya, Glavinovich), but Alicia takes 4th seed for tonight's heat:
4 Wilson, Alicia SO California-PC 4:07.51 4:11.96

Ashlyn just on the other side of the cut line, taking 9th (top seed for B-final in a new PB), with Sarah Dimeco also in the B-final and Natalie in the C-final:
9 Fiorilli, Ashlyn FR California-PC 4:16.72 4:14.67
14 Dimeco, Sarah FR California-PC 4:15.57 4:17.93
24 Tuck, Natalie JR California-PC 4:23.50 4:28.24

SwimSwam excerpt: "Cal's Alicia Wilson, a 2019 WUGs champion, qualified 4th for the Bears in 4:11.96, but without Sarah Darcel they've only got one in the A final. Freshman Ashlyn Fiorilli dropped nearly a second as she took 9th for Cal. Fellow Cal freshman Sarah Dimeco (4:17.93) will join her in the B final."

Froski Rachel Klinker had some fab swims in both B relays too - look forward to see how she performs this week, esp in her 200 Fly. Further improvements in her sprint fly in particular will bode well for the future (51.91 fly split on the 400 MR this evening - Rachel's PB in the 100 Fly is a 54.18!), with Maddie graduating this season and not a lot of fly help behind Izzy until our 2021 class begins their journey in Berkeley...

On me way out, but v. briefly, Rachel busted out a 52.70 new lifetime best in the *100 Fly* @ morning heats!

Klinker won't be racing in this event tonight as this was an *exhibitioned* swim (she's needed more in the *200 Free* where she had put down a 1:46.46 @ prelims just now) - but that time would have easily qualified for the A final tonight

100 fly:

A-final: (Hansson takes top seed, LSJU gets Wheal & Fackenthal in the A-final as well).
2 Ivey, Izzy SO CAL-PC 51.46 51.92
7 Murphy, Maddie SR CAL-PC 53.48 52.82

13 Garcia, Elise SO CAL-PC 54.82 53.99
---
C-final:

And, as UAC noted, 52.70 for Rachel (previous best time of 54.18?) and 52.25 exhibition swim from Drabot as well.

SwimSwam excerpt: "Defending champion Louise Hansson of USC led the heats with a 50.45. The Trojans will score big here, as they got 3 in the final. Jemma Schlicht was 3rd in 52.17. Catherine Sanchez took 8th in 52.92.

Cal's Izzy Ivey (51.92) was the only woman other than Hansson to break 52. They'll have 2 in the final with Maddie Murphy (52.82) at 7th. Stanford also got 2 in. Freshman Emma Wheal broke 53 for the first time, dropping almost a second in 52.30. Teammate Amalie Fackenthal qualified behind her in 52.52."

100 back:

A-final:
1 Blovad, Keaton SR CAL-PC 52.07 51.74
2 Ivey, Izzy SO CAL-PC 51.08 51.80
Nice 1-2 punch from the Bears heading into tonight, though 3 Trees (Nordmann, Voss, Crisera) in as well.

----
18 Light, Aislinn SR CAL-PC 53.64 54.72
21 Clark, Chloe FR CAL-PC 54.05 55.23

SwimSwam: "Cal's Keaton Blovad, the 2019 bronze medalist and top returner in this race, led prelims with a 51.74. That's within a few tenths of her best. In her 2nd swim of the morning, teammate Izzy Ivey (51.80) qualified 2nd."

As a whole, Bears swimming okay through day 3, but Stanford's got the top talent and depth to do well (more than just well) in a conference meet setup. Need a drop from Sophie if she has hopes of getting an invite (or being on the bubble) as in the past 2 years, and Chloe has yet to hit her high school bests.

Think this is:

400 IM:
4/0/0 Stanford
1/2/1 Cal

100 fly:
2/0/1 Stanford
2/1/1 Cal

200 free:
2/1/0 Stanford
1/2/2 Cal

100 breast:
2/1/0 Stanford
1/2/0 Cal

100 back:
3/0/0 Stanford
2/2/2 Cal

If right, Stanford: 13/2/1 and Cal: 7/9/6 for tonight. Lot more returning swimmers in tonight's finals for Cal, but more Trees in high-scoring positions. 3M diving and 200 medley relay to be contested as well. Really hope Darcel & Abbey rest up and recover through this meet for the big dance...

Also, SwimSwam keeps referencing the battle between Cal and U$C for second, but as far as I can tell, Trojans have 0/0/0 tonight in the 400 IM, 3/0/1 in the 100 fly, 2/0/0 in the 200 free, 1/1/1 in 100 BR, and 0/2/0 in the 100 back. (6/3/2 total). Hansson dominant and they've got some top-end talent, but Cal should take at least second in overall team standings, I would think...

EDIT: Yep, confirmed as much for at least second 2020 W. PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS: UCLA MAKING MOVES ON DAY 3
  • Stanford may be on top by over 100 points after tonight. Cal should be safely locked into 2nd. Things will get interesting between UCLA and USC for 3rd, as the Bruins are projected to be just 10 points ahead if we scored things based on prelims and added them to the current scores. Arizona State isn't far behind, so they could also be moving up tonight.

Roll on Bears; 22 finalists tonight!

Not the complete results for the *100 breast* :p, but quickly:

Ali (PB = 59.52 @ 2018 Pac-12s)

2019 Pac-12s: 1:00.59 (Prelims) -> 59.79 (Finals)
2020 Pac-12s: 1:00.75 (Prelims) -> 1:00.75 (Finals) #10

(looks like Ali won't get an NCAA invite?)

Ema (PB = 58.97 @ 2019 NCAAs)

2019 Pac-12s: 1:00.45 (Prelims) -> 59.68 (Finals)

Comparison with last year:
No 100 back swim from Izzy; Keaton then third in 51.34. Sophie a good deal slower than where she was (52.51), so no NCAA invite for her. Courtney 54.20, Alicia with a 53.23, and Aislinn in 54.32 (so a nice drop this year).

Not sure if the live stream cut out for everybody, but just ended after Teri's live interview (the 100 back finals), no 3M diving coverage or 200 MR yet, as far as I know.

Update: 200 MR, Farm takes this somewhat handily over Cal. Breast leg really made the difference there; Raab has seriously come into her own...

1 STAN-PC 'A' 1:37.43 1:35.93
1) Nordmann, Lucie SO 2) Raab, Allie SO
3) Wheal, Emma FR 4) Goeders, Anya SO
24.55 | 51.30 (26.75) | 1:14.31 (23.01) | 1:35.93 (21.62)

2 CAL-PC 'A' 1:35.24 1:36.45
1) Blovad, Keaton SR 2) Rajic, Ema SO
3) Murphy, Maddie SR 4) Riley, Eloise FR
24.17| 51.77 (27.60) | 1:14.67 (22.90) | 1:36.45 (21.78)

That being said, nice split from Eloise in particular, really stepping up in the 200 FR and here on the 200 MR!

Looks like Ali just did a time trial in the 100 Breast. 1:00.44, so slight improvement from prelims and finals, but I don't think that will be enough for line 36/37.

She *technically* has 4 more shots to make NCs... prelims and finals of the 200 distance tomorrow, then time trials on Sunday for both distances if needed.

(was writing this before I noticed s19's post, which said it better )

Ali went for a time trial of her *100 Breast*, improved her finals time of 1:00.75 to a 1:00.44. This represents her 2nd fastest swim of the season, but alas, neither this time trial result nor her swifter 1:00.30 from the Minn Invite will be quite enough to qualify for March (basically have to dip below the minute mark).

There's always the *200 breast* competition tomorrow, but will be an uphill challenge for Harrison as her forte is more in the sprints. Likely would have to get down to the mid 2:09s to safely make the cutoff line, whilst her PB = 2:10.21, and SB = 2:12.65...

Wishing Ali the best tho (not sure if you can enter multiple time trials in the same event?), and will be cheering our Junior Bear on!

Ivey Reaches The Top Of The Podium

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. After posting runner-up finishes in her first two individual races at the Pac-12 Championships, sophomore Isabel Ivey at last reached the top of a podium with victory in the 100-yard backstroke Friday to highlight Cal's night at the conference meet.

Ivey, who took second in the 200 individual medley Thursday, began her Friday with a second-place showing in the 100 butterfly after swimming a season-best 51.14. A short time later, she got back in the water for the 100 back and found herself locked in a close duel with teammate Keaton Blovad. The difference came off the final turn when Ivey asserted herself and pulled away for the victory, touching in 51.06.

"It was a little hard," Ivey said of her double on the Pac-12 Network telecast. "I'm not sure I'm going to do it at NCAAs, but it was a good race. No way the perfect race, there's a lot of things I need to clear up for NCAAs, but I'm pretty happy with it. "

Blovad, a senior, took second in the backstroke in a season-best 51.60. A four-time finalist in the event during her career, she moved up the ladder every year, from sixth to fourth to third and now to second. In addition to Cal's two A finalists, senior Courtney Mykkanen was 13th in 54.00 and junior Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou 15th in 54.19.

"I thought we had a solid evening, and I'm particularly of proud of the women who got to the podium," head coach Teri McKeever said. "We've got a lot of things to build off of after 22 individual swims tonight and want to finish strong on the final day tomorrow."

In the 100 fly, Ivey was not the only Bear to swim a season-best. Senior Maddie Murphy joined her in the A final and took seventh in 52.78, and sophomore Elise Garcia claimed 13th overall from her spot in the B final in 53.83.

Sophomore Alicia Wilson got the Bears off to a great start in the night's opening race with a runner-up finish in the 400 individual medley. Wilson completed the race in 4:04.99, a nearly three-second PR to put her as the No. 3 performer in school history in the event. In addition, Freshman Ashlyn Fiorilli swam a personal-best 4:14.33 to take 12th and freshman Sarah DiMeco was 14th in 4:16.48.

Junior Robin Neumann claimed third place in the 200 free for the second year in a row, finishing in a season-best 1:44.02 to lead the Bears. In the B final, freshman Ayla Spitz took 10th overall in 1:45.20, while freshman Rachel Klinker was 11th in a PR 1:45.47.

Sophomore Ema Rajic paced Cal in the 100 breast with a fourth-place finish in 59.92. Rajic, who was ninth in the Pac-12 final last season, owns the school record with a time of 58.97 from the 2019 NCAA Championships. Junior Ali Harrison was 10th overall (second in the B final) in 1:00.75 with senior Alexa Buckley 14th overall in a season-best 1:01.71.

Friday's events wrapped up with another second-place finish for the Bears, this time in the 200 medley relay. Blovad, Rajic, Murphy and freshman Eloise Riley turned in a time of 1:36.45 to give Cal a pair of titles (200 free relay, 400 medley relay) and two runner-up finishes (also 800 free relay) in the relays with the 400 free relay still to come.

Through the first three days of the meet, Stanford leads with 1,027 points. Cal is second with 866.5 points and USC third with 768.

Senior Abbey Weitzeil did not compete Friday after injuring her arm when she touched the wall at the end of her winning 50-yard free race Thursday night. She will be evaluated before Saturday's racing to determine her status for the final two sessions.

The Pac-12 meet concludes Saturday with 10:30 a.m. prelims followed by finals, which will be televised on the Pac-12 Network starting at 6:30 p.m.

Some final prelim morning updates:

200 back:
- Keaton was 1:54.13 to place 4th, just off her season best of 1:54.00 from Minnesota.
- A PB by 0.01 from Courtney to qualify 7th for the A final
- Izzy exhibitioned a PB by 0.01 (guess today is the session of going PBs by 0.01!) in 1:54.10.
- Ayla was a 1:55.38 for 9th, dropped a second from her HS personal best, 1:56.31.
- Alicia went a 1:55.75 for 11th, and Aislinn was a 1:57.49 for 20th.
- Sophie was 2:00.37, and Chloe a 2:03.46.
- LSJU with 4 in the A final, Cal with 2

100 free:
- DFS from Abbey, most likely trying to get her to rest as much as possible for NCAA's. Teri did say that they were considering her status on a session-by-session basis, so she may swim the 400 free relay at finals.
- Robin swam a 48.51 for 4th, Eloise a 48.93 (PB by almost a second!) to qualify 8th in the A final.
- Maddie was 49.47 to qualify 20th in the C final
- Elise swam a 50.02, just half a second off her PB to tie for 26th.

200 breast:
- LSJU got 4 (Raab, Forde, Bartel, Zhao) in the A final, USC with 3 (Odgers, Aroesty, Pavlopoulou)
- Ema qualified in 2:12.03 for 9th, Ali with a 2:13.57 for 14th
- Alexa Buckley went a 2:17.67 to qualify 20th in the C final, Natalie Tuck went a 2:19.50

200 fly:
- Rachel qualifies 2nd behind Drabot of LSJU in a new PB by exactly a second! 1:54.07.
- Ashlyn goes a 1:58.42 for 10th, a second off her PB
- Elizabeth Bailey qualifies for the C final in 2:02.65
- Sarah Dimeco exhibitioned a 1:58.63 200 fly.

As a whole, very impressed so far this meet by the performances from freshmen Ayla, Ashlyn, Rachel, Eloise, and Sarah D (off the top of my head!). Great to see them all step up to the plate with drops and places across the board in their first conference meet

I know we have finals yet, but definitely going to need healthy Darcel + Abbey to have any shot at a title next month (not to mention the rest of our talented squad firing on all cylinders). Also hope Maddie can end her senior season with a bang, and would love for Ali, Sophie, and Chloe to get back to their fastest. That being said -- these young women are just that, so can only hope for the best!

200 Back:

A-final:
Keeks leading at the 100, 54.53. Voss came back on that last 25, led a total podium sweep for the Cardinal ( ouch). Seeing that Keaton actually had the slowest closing 50 of the A-final field, so not sure if going out as quick as she did hurt her a bit at the end.

Bright side, new PB for Courtney! That might put her near bubble territory for an invite (not sure). Ayla ties that from the B-final

5 Blovad, Keaton SR CAL-PC 1:54.13 1:52.93
6 Mykkanen, Courtney SR CAL-PC 1:54.35 1:53.89

Keaton places 5th in 1:52.93, Ayla wins the B final in a new PB by 2 seconds, 1:53.89!

Courtney places 6th with a 1:53.89!! That places her around the bubble in terms of qualifying, but if she's able to qualify in her senior year, that would be the best case Also a new PB for her.

Alicia places third in the B final with a 1:54.33, just a little off her PB from Minnesota this year.

Aislinn is 4th in the C final with a 1:56.97.

Don't think that Keaton is entirely tapered here, so she may have more in the tank for NCAA's. The qualifying time for 200 back may be a bit faster than last year's (1:54.01), but we'll have to see who decides to drop the event. Just looking at the list, Kylee Alons of NCSU (100 free), Calypso Sheridan of Northwestern (200 breast? maybe), and Kate Moore of NCSU (1650 free) may drop the event, so there's hope for Courtney qualifying

Robin places 5th with a 48.43, and Eloise goes another PB in 48.76. Both dropped slightly from their prelims times

Maddie went a 49.34 for 4th in the C final, really hoping that Teri just tapered her a little less here and will have a lot more in the tank at the big game.
