Total of 4 divers now. I know Cassie Bayer has left. Don't see Ashlyn Fiorilli or Chloe Clark listed either. Both gone?

------------

BROOKE FORDE SWIMS 4:39 500, 2:09 200 BREAST AT CAL/STANFORD WOMEN'S DUAL

While the meet was not scored, Cal swimmers won 7 of the 9 events.

Freshman Emily Gantriis opened things up for the Bears, taking the 50 free with a 22.24 in her first race at Cal. Teammate Eloise Riley came in 2nd with a 22.44.

Riley went on to win the 100 free, swimming a 48.90, which is just off her personal best of 48.76. Gantriis came in 2nd in the 100 free, clocking a 49.22, and teammate Elise Garcia made it a 1-2-3 performance for the Bears with her 49.33.

Isabel Ivey also put up a pair of big swims for the Bears. Ivey kicked off the meet with a decisive win in the 100 fly, posting a 51.77. She took the race out very quickly, splitting 23.79 on the first 50. Ivey also swam a 100 back time trial later in the meet, where she swam a 51.52.

Cal's Isabelle Stadden also swam the 100 back time trial, finishing right behind Ivey in 51.72. Stadden also posted a huge win in the 200 back, swimming a 1:51.16.

Teammate Alicia Wilson nearly swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM, touching in 1:54.69. Wilson has a personal best of 1:54.68, which she swam in December of last year.

Another Bear, Ayla Spitz, won the 200 free with a 1:45.98, with teammate Nicole Oliva taking 2nd in 1:46.85.

Cal's other event "win" came from Rachel Klinker, who won the 200 fly in the tightest race of the day. Klinker got out to the early lead, hitting the 100 mark in 55.44, while Stanford's Hannah Kukurugya was 56.28 at the halfway mark. Kukurugya closed the gap on Klinker in the back half of the race, finishing in 1:56.10, just behind Klinker's 1:56.02.

A lot of nice early season times for our Bears. Can you imagine if Abbey came back and swam with Emily, Eloise, and Izzy on a relay!!!

Longseeker,

There was zero publicity for this meet with Stanford. The public (including parents) were not allowed to attend and the staff didn't want to be on some news cast with a talking head yammering about "unneeded" sports participation. This will remain true if there is an additional meet later this month or in early December. With the cancellation of the big winter multi-team events where schools are generally looking to get swimmer's qualified for the NCAAs (top 38 or so for the women, top 29 or so for the men, but note there is talk about limiting number of athletes for Covid protocol logistics) both Stanford and Cal are working on additional sessions, with the same spectator black-out.

The men had a very successful meet with by my count nine swimmers achieving times that should safely book an invite to Greensboro in March. Hugo Gonzalez, Jacques Laeuffer and Marcos Peng are still home in Europe but are expected to re-join the team in January. Durden will be looking for an additional meet or two to get additional guys qualified. A Pac 12 meet is not a sure thing but the coaches are working on a safe way to hold the meet, aiming to limit the number of swimmers in the building at any given time.

The women swam a bunch of B cuts, but only Ivey, Stadden and Wilson are safely in with Klinker just on the right side of the bubble. Look for faster times in later meets for the women.

Don't yet know whether this is an officially recognised time achieved at a sanctioned meet, or just from practice...but froski Stadden had apparently lowered her mark from last week to hit a 1:49.77 in the 200 Back earlier today - this lifetime best time would lift her up a spot, vaulting to #5 on Cal's Top 10 , just behind Natalie's 1:49.52... well done Isa!

Most of the men have last year's class indicated, except for incoming freshmen. I am pretty confident that Zheng Quah has used up his eligibility.

#7: ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE +5 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 12TH)
#6: GEORGIA BULLDOGS +1 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 7TH)

#5: NC STATE WOLFPACK +1 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 6TH)
NC State has been rising fast on the women's side - they actually return the third-most psych sheet points of any team, and just two fewer than Georgia. NC State has the makings of an elite medley relay, ending last season with the nation's best 400 medley time and returning three of four legs. Sophie Hansson might be the nation's best sprint breaststroker. Katharine Berkoff is a top backstroker, and her field gets easier with Regan Smith deferring her enrollment. Kylee Alons is a versatile lineup-fixer for the Wolfpack. They also bring in a highly-ranked recruiting class led by two breaststrokers.

#4: STANFORD CARDINAL -3 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 1ST)
Stanford loses a couple of key scorers in Katie Drabot and Erin Voss. Meanwhile their expected replacements are mostly deferring their enrollment in the pandemic-altered season. Taylor Ruck isn't competing in the NCAA this fall. #1-ranked prospect Regan Smith is deferring, along with #6 Lillie Nordmann and #18 Samantha Pearson.
Stanford can stick in the top three, though, if things break right. Brooke Forde (42 psych sheet points) returns, along with rising freestyler Morgan Tankersley (27 psych sheet points). Stanford remains extremely deep, the product of their torrid recruiting pace the past few years. But with really just one small informal dual meet with Cal to go on, we struggle to rank Stanford higher than 4th for the time being.

#3: CAL GOLDEN BEARS (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 3RD)
Cal lags pretty far behind the rest of the top 6 in returning psych sheet points. But Cal has also generally moved up from seed at NCAAs, so scoring out the psych sheet doesn't give a completely fair view of where this team would have finished last year. Losing Abbey Weitzeil is a major blow. But in their dual meet with Stanford, Cal's crew looked pretty solid. Star freshman Isabelle Stadden was 1:51.1 in the 200 back, and Izzy Ivey swam very well with two wins.

#2: MICHIGAN WOLVERINES +2 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 4TH)
Michigan was 4th in our season-ending power ranks, and they also sit fourth in returning psych sheet points. The biggest concern for the Wolverines was probably whether Canadian Maggie MacNeil would be competing or sitting out the season but she's already competed with the team at U.S. Open. That leaves Michigan with most of its top talent returning, including top-flight distance duo Sierra Schmidt and Kaitlynn Sims. They'll have to find a breaststroker to replace the graduated Miranda Tucker, but their freshman class offers several intriguing options.

#1: VIRGINIA CAVALIERS +1 (FINAL 2020 POWER RANK: 2ND)
The Cavaliers led psych sheet scoring by almost 70 points last year, and they return 43 more than any other team. They've also got the best recruiting class in the nation after the Stanford deferrals. The combo of senior Paige Madden (an NCAA title contender in the 200/500 free), sophomores Kate Douglass (a title contender in basically any three events she chooses) and Ella Nelson (seeded 2nd in the 200 breast and 6th in the 400 IM last year), plus #2 overall recruit Alex Walsh (58.1/2:05.8 in breaststroke plus 1:53.6/4:07.9 in IM) is a stellar top-end scoring group, and UVA has the depth and relay pieces to win the national title this year.

The automatic qualifier breakdown for Cal's Woman and Men teams indicates they both some recruiting and training work to do to regain their respective top ranking.

Which new and returning team members are most likely to raise their numbers to qualifying levels?

NCAA A CUT ROUNDUP: TEXAS LEADS BOTH WOMEN'S & MEN'S QUALIFIERS

CURRENT NCAA A CUTS

Each of these athletes is automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships:

WOMEN
EVENT | NAME | YEAR | TEAM | TIME | MEET
200 Back | Stadden, Isabelle | FR | Cal | 1:49.77 | 2020 Stanford Invite

MEN
EVENT | NAME | YEAR | TEAM | TIME | MEET
100 Breast | Whitley, Reece | JR | Cal | 51.54 | 2020 California vs Stanford Men
200 Breast | Whitley, Reece | JR | Cal | 1:48.53 | 2020 California vs Stanford Men
200 Fly | Julian, Trenton | SR | Cal | 1:39.93 | 2020 California vs Stanford Men

BY TEAM:
That list includes 14 women and 18 women representing 11 schools. Here's the automatic qualifier breakdown by team:

Women:
Texas - 4
Virginia - 3
Georgia - 2
Alabama / California / NC State / Stanford / Tennessee - 1 each

Men:
Texas - 6
Texas A&M / Georgia - 3 each

California / Florida - 2 each

Louisville / Stanford - 1 each

------------------
The Pac-12 teams will have a disadvantage as already Texas, Virginia, and the Sec teams have had numerous meets. Previous years we relied on the Dec invitations for many to reach the 'A' qualifying marks. Will there be any other meets prior to the Pac-12's championship that will get us ready for the NCAA 'ship?

Quick update - as is understood, original Swimswam article was referring to automatic qualifiers (NCAA "A" cuts).

Here are some of our likely qualifiers at this early stage, with additions expected at the conclusion of 2021 Pac-12s (assuming that event & NCAAs will proceed as scheduled!):

----------

NCAA QUALIFIERS PROJECTION: TEXAS MEN ALREADY HAVE 21 UNDER 2020 INVITE TIMES

WOMEN UNDER 2020 NCAA INVITE TIME

California (Women): 6
Gantriis, Ivey, Stadden, Rajic, Klinker, Wilson

California (Men): 9
Hoffer, Seeliger, Yeadon, Lasco, Carr, Mefford, Whitley, Julian, Grieshop

----------

Less relevant at this time as Bears haven't really competed in NCAA relay events thus far in the season:

2020-2021 NCAA WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING POWER RANKS: DECEMBER EDITION

2020-2021 NCAA WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING POWER RANKS: JANUARY EDITION

#23: USC TROJANS (-15)

#6: STANFORD CARDINAL (-2)
It's really hard to tell what kind of roster Stanford is working with we've seen very little competition, and the only Stanford-related headlines have been star freshmen deferring. This team is always really deep even beyond its typical star power, but it's hard to rank them higher than sixth until we see some more results.

#5: MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (-2)

#4: TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (+12)

#3: NC STATE WOLFPACK (+2)

#2: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (-)
9th in the current Swimulator while dealing with the Pac-12's very sparse fall competition schedule. The strength of Cal's roster is probably being obscured by a lack of meets. Freshman Isabelle Stadden has already been sub-1:50 in the 200 back and Emily Gantriis looks like an impact addition.

#1: VIRGINIA CAVALIERS (-)

-----------

2020-2021 NCAA MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING POWER RANKS: JANUARY EDITION

#15: USC TROJANS (-1)

#10: STANFORD CARDINAL (+1)

#5: INDIANA HOOSIERS (-2)

#4: FLORIDA GATORS (-)

#3: GEORGIA BULLDOGS (+2)

#2: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS (-1)
The Swimulator margin looks brutal but it's worth keeping in mind that Cal (like much of the Pac-12) has had very limited competition opportunities. And most Cal studs only really geared up for one event, leading to some real Swimulator anamolies like Ryan Hoffer (1st in the 50 free at 18.97 but just 22nd in the 100 fly at 46.43) or Sean Grieshop (5th in the 400 IM at 3:42.69, but not even in the top 25 in the 500 free). Essentially the tie-breaker for us in this dead-even #1 battle was that Cal has more likely three-event scorers, while Texas's roster has more one-event scorers and that may add up in the NCAA format. It looks like Hugo Gonzales is staying in Spain for this season, so that does hurt for Cal.

#1: TEXAS LONGHORNS (+1)
One way to look at it: Texas has a lower floor than Cal, but a higher ceiling.
Texas also has a lead of nearly 400 points over Cal in the Swimulator.

Off to a great start!. Stadden, Rajic, Ivey and Neumann lead a 1-2 Cal finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:29.22.

Sarah DiMeco keeps it rolling, winning the 1000 free in 9:44.10 - #4 in Cal history and fifth-fastest in the country this year.

Tea Laughlin (54.07) and Ayla Spitz (54.34) lead a 1-2 Cal finish in the 100 back.

USC's Kaitlyn Dobler sets a pool record (58.31) and Ema Rajic lowers her own school record (58.79) in a blistering 100 breast.

Another 1-2 result in Cal's favor, this time in the 200 fly - 1. Rachel Klinker (1:55.85) and 2. Alicia Wilson (1:56.30).

Robin Neumann posts the #8 time in the country in the 100 free, touching in 48.34 and one-tenth ahead of Emily Gantriis.

Down goes another record! Isabel Ivey resets the Cal dual-meet record with a 1:55.54 winning swim in the 200 IM.

What a way to close out day 1 of racing - a pool and dual-meet record in the 200 free relay! 1:27.78 by ERiley, Neumann, Gantriis and Ivey. Back with more vs. USC tomorrow.

Isabel Ivey adds the 200 free to her 100 fly win, reaching the wall in 1:44.93 for the No. 6 time in the country this year.

Sarah DiMeco places second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:14.98 behind a 4:11.16 from USC's Isabelle Odgers.
