Cheers for the confirmation! I believe Fiorilli had competed quite well at this month's PSS meet @ San Antonio, and her bio does indicate that she's still a Bear, so this is really great news

2021 WOMEN'S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP SCORING BREAKDOWN

  • Virginia appear well positioned to defend their title next year with 240 non senior individual points. This is despite Virginia having the highest scoring senior class with 75 individual points. Texas are next best with 178.5 non senior individual points. And while Stanford are positioned to bring in a massive haul of other worldly talent (Regan Smith, Taylor Ruck, Torri Huske among others), they only had 17 non senior points at this meet, so they are nearly rebuilding from scratch.

POWER RANKS REVISITED: 2021 WOMEN'S NCAA SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

In multiple cases, we relied too much on historical precedent, overrating some long-time NCAA powers at the expense of less-established, but rising, programs.

In fact, we overrated the three teams who have combined to win the past nine NCAA team titles: California, Stanford, and Georgia. Those were our three biggest misses inside the top 10.

NC State had the second-most psych sheet points, besting Cal by 25. We leaned a little too heavily on Cal's historic track record of great NCAA showings, when ultimately NC State outperformed the Golden Bears and beat them by 64.

Massive props to all of our plucky Bears for gutsily sticking together through an unprecedented season (and a half) of extremely tough & unexpected challenges, giving their all for their teammates and the school all the way to the end in a topsy-turvy National Championship that was rife with heartbreak along with bright moments of well-deserved joy & triumph.

Next year will not be an easy ride with the emergence & establishment of dominant powerhouses in the ACC like Virginia & NC State (congrats go out to both those teams for their historic achievements in claiming 1-2 @ 2021 NCAAs!), the former likely to get even stronger with a formidable 2021 freshie class spearheaded by #1 recruit Gretchen Walsh. LSJU will be back to their juggernaut strength with all their World Record champions deferrals, redshirts & injured studs returning to the Farm, not to mention an intimidating group of big name ace sprinters for their 2021 recruiting class.

Have every confidence that Teri will be ready to meet the challenge, with her sizeable group of incoming froskis, who show considerable potential and look to bring breadth & depth to the table, even if our sleuth of multi-talented but under-the-radar Baby Bears may not hold anywhere near the superstar & household name status of their counterpart recruits for the other afore-mentioned schools.

Then there's a lot to look forward to in the current squad, in such areas as Elise's development (after a bit of delay :p), Izzy being the play maker that she is and capable in so many depts, with the lowerclassmen already carrying more than their weight (Isabelle, Emily, Eloise, Ayla, Rachel to mention but a few).

Go Bears!

*25 years straight 9th or higher in National meet.

*13 years 5th or better.

* Worst finish ever is 28th in the 43 years of the program..nobody can top that kind of performance except the furds in Squash or something.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

In recognition of all the bloody hard work & well-earned accomplishments in the pool by our Golden Bears throughout this challenging season, thought I'd put together a few stats of their ranked 2021 performances that broke into Cal's hallowed "All-Time Top 10" list.

Have also included *unranked* times swum this year which represent a personal record for the swim/dive Bear in question, to reflect the encouraging progress they have made training here @ Cal.

Note that international froskis who don't have a HS history of racing in the little pool will automatically achieve lifetime bests in all their swum events in their debut season, as will others who are competing in an off-event that they have previously never (or very rarely) raced.

Although they naturally deserve a thumbs-up mention (Elise, Izzy etc, for example), those Bears who went fast this season but had a swifter time that has already earned them a berth on the school's All-Time Top 10 list, as well as those who contributed massively to the Conference + National Championships RELAYs with the quickest splits of their careers, won't unfortunately make an appearance on the list below...

Disclaimer : There will no doubt be some unintentional omissions & the inevitable inaccuracies... I had attempted to reference most of the data against USA Swimming's database.

btw a more thorough analysis & deeper dive into these stats may provide a bit of an indication on which event was prioritised as the taper meet of the season (or perhaps a missed double taper stemming from the interrupted & shortened training base)...

Pac-12 Honors For Two Golden Bears

Teri McKeever Named Coach Of The Year; Isabel Ivey Tabbed Swimmer Of The Year

After leading Cal to a Pac-12 team title and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, junior Isabel Ivey has been named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and Teri McKeever the Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

Ivey won three events at the Pac-12 championship meet, placing first in the 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle. She also helped the Bears to conference crowns in all four of her relay swims and was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet for her efforts.

At the NCAA Championships last week in Greensboro, North Carolina, Ivey posted a trio of top-four finishes, taking third in the 100 free and fourth in both the 100 back and 100 fly. Her 100 free time of 46.95 was a lifetime best and moved her up to third all-time at Cal in the event. In addition, Ivey anchored the 200 free relay to a national title and swam on two other relays that placed among the top four.

Over the course of the season, Ivey was a two-time Pac-12 Swimmer of the Week, and she set school dual-meet and Spieker Aquatics Complex records in the 100 free and 100 fly.

Ivey becomes the 11th Golden Bear to receive Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year honors and the fifth to earn the honor in the past 10 years. Cal's previous recipients were: Mary T. Meagher (1987), Sarah Anderson (1989), Marylyn Chiang (1999), Haley Cope (2000), Natalie Coughlin (2001-03), Dana Vollmer (2009), Caitlin Leverenz (2012), Elizabeth Pelton (2013), Missy Franklin (2015) and Abbey Weitzeil (2019).

McKeever is receiving the Coach of the Year award for the ninth time in her career after being named in 1999, 2002, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019. She has guided the Bears to five Pac-12 team championships during her tenure, all since 2009.

Last week, McKeever led Cal to its 15th consecutive top-5 finish at the NCAA meet the longest current streak in the country. The Bears have won four national titles during the run (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015).

WOMEN'S RECRUITING CLASS RANKINGS REVISITED: TOP 12 SCHOOLS FOR 2017-2021

Now it's time to look back at our team-by-team recruiting class rankings to see which teams got most from their recruiting hauls.
Back in July of 2017, we ranked out the top 12 recruiting classes nationwide. You can look back on our ranks here:
#5: CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
Top-tier additions: Robin Neumann (Netherlands - free), Sarah Darcel (Canada - IM/breast), Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou (CA - back), Ali Harrison (CA - breast)
The rest: Alexandra Skorus-Neely, Dannie Dilsaver, Natalie Tuck, Elizabeth Bailey, Briana Thai (diving), Jackie IM (diving), Kathleen Navas (diving)
    NCAA finishes over 3* years: 2nd, 2nd, *3rd*, 4th
  • Number of NCAA scorers in class: 2 (Neumann, Darcel)
This was a small and more internationally-based class, but both Neumann and Darcel came through well. Neumann was a top 10 overall scorer in the class and the #1 international prospect in scoring. Darcel scored a dozen points as a freshmen, but scratched out of the meet as a sophomore.

RE-RANKING THE CLASSES
RANK | TEAM | POINTS OVER 4 YEARS
1 | Stanford | 134
2 | Texas A&M | 133.5
3 | Virginia | 124
4 | Arkansas | 88
5 | Texas | 87.5
6 | Arizona | 76.5
7 | Michigan | 64
8 | Cal | 63
9 | NC State | 60
10 | Georgia | 54

FIRSTS, FASTS, AND ANOMALIES: OUR FAVORITE STATS FROM WOMEN'S NCAAS

1. Virginia - The easiest superlatives to write. The first NCAA title in program history, the first NCAA title in ACC Conference history, a swimmer in every A final of the meet, and a simply dominant performance, winning by 137 points. It's simple, but when you're the title-holders, that first title is a no-brainer for the best stat.

2. NC State - The highest finish in program history, and were it not for Virginia's win it would be the highest finish in ACC Championship history.

3. Texas - The Texas Longhorns had their best NCAA Championship finish of the Carol Capitani era (hired in June 2012). In fact, this finish for Texas, boosted by a big effort from their freshman class, is their first top 3 finish since 2001.

4. Cal - The Cal women won their 5th 200 free relay in 6 seasons, and the Cal women earned their 15th-straight top 5 finish at the NCAA Championships. That's the longest active women's D1 streak in the country by a wide margin. After Stanford finished 9th, snapping a 6-season run, the next-longest active top 5 streak in the country is 2, by the University of Texas.

9. Stanford - This was a tough year for the three-time defending champions, between redshirts, deferrals, and injuries. But senior Brooke Forde did join an illustrious class of Stanford swimmers to have won the women's 400 IM as part of the best 400 IM legacy in the country. All told, they've won 13 out of the 37 400 yard IMs in D1 Women's NCAA Championship history, which comes out to over 35 % of the titles available. No other school has been that dominant across a single individual event the next-best is Stanford's 12 all-time titles in the 200 butterfly. Stanford also holds the best total across all events with 14 total 200 medley relay titles.

Ranking the 10 Best Performers From the NCAA Women's Championships

5. Isabel Ivey, Junior, California

Even with no individual titles this season, Ivey played a huge role in Cal's fourth place finish that allowed the team to come home with a trophy for the 12th straight season. Ivey anchored Cal's winning 200 free relay on Thursday night that was a surprise to some, as it was the Golden Bears' fifth 200 free relay win in six years. Individually, she made three A-Finals, finishing third in the 100 free, fourth in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 back. Those three events were some of the most stacked of the whole meet, so we aren't holding her lack of individual wins against her. Ivey is clearly one of the best swimmers in the NCAA and she proved why with her versatility in Greensboro.

Alicia Wilson ~ 2021 British Swimming Selection Trials ~

*200m IM*
-> 2:09.61 PB (Prev best = 2:11.35 @ 2019 World University Games, Italy)

Massive lifetime best by almost 2 seconds from Alicia to take 2nd (the #3 finisher was quite a bit behind @ 2:13.67), pushing winner Abbie Wood (2:09.23) hard throughout the final. Liss was leading at the conclusion of her back leg, and surprised more than a few by hanging bear-y tough against 200m Breast runner-up Wood on the breast leg of the race!!!

Easily dips under British Swimming's Olympics tough consideration standard of 2:11.10

Certainly places Wilson in a solid position to claim a berth for Tokyo, with her Top 2 finish here + bettering the selection cut time significantly by a sec & a half!

At any rate, brill to see Alicia give a shoutout to her Bears teammates in the post-race interview - notably Wilson was sporting a "California Swimming & Diving" sweatshirt & jacket in her walk out to the deck (check out around 49 min 25 sec into the live streaming video here):

GB Trials, Day 4 Finals: Proud Gives Demonstration; Hopkin, Peters & Wilson All Tokyo-Bound

Wood led after the first 50 with Alicia Wilson going ahead on the backstroke to turn 1:00.56 to 1:01.15.
A breaststroke leg of 36.76 propelled Wood into the lead but the pair were in a real tussle down the final 50.

Wood stopped the clock at 2:09.23 a new PB with Wilson 0.38 behind in 2:09.61 as both women went comfortably within the consideration time.

Wilson - who clocked a new 1.5sec PB - added:
Alicia Wilson said:

"Honestly, when I was sitting and having a nap earlier, I was just wanting to get below 2:11 so to do that was a shock!

"It's definitely hard because I don't have my team-mates here. I'm just thankful to have the coaching team I do, because that has definitely compensated for it.

"Honestly, I'm not sure about my expectations for the summer, just to do my best and see if I can get on a team."

The fourth day of swimming competition at the 2021 European Championships provide yet another opportunity for teams to move into one of the four Wildcard positions for relay qualification ahead of this summer's Tokyo Olympics. Tonight featured the women in the 800 freestyle relay.

Turkey occupied the third position, 3+ seconds behind the Italians and then Great Britain was in fourth, another 1.01 behind Turkey. Three more European countries were among the next best as Belgium, Israel, and Spain would all be vying to move up.

Not completely knowledgeable bout this, but believe that USA Swimming has defined a set of priorities which ultimately determines the selection order & process, taking into account that there's additionally a limit on how many can fill the spots on Team USA (something like 26 women & 26 men?).

If you finish #5 & #6 @ Trials in the 100m & 200m Free individuals, reckon you will be seriously considered for the 4x200 & 4x100 free relays - but it's not necessarily guaranteed (seem to recall that USA Swimming only recognise the Top 4 as officially selected for those relays at the conclusion of trials?)
    • UPDATES =>
However that's thankfully more often than not mitigated by studs who qualify in multiple events (think Ledecky, Dressel & the likes), thus leaving room on the roster to take the fifth & sixth Trials finishers from those 2 free races for their respective relays, if these swimmers haven't made the Olympics team otherwise.

Should be noted that I believe Team USA does grant the coaching staff the authority & final say in who actually gets to swim on those relays (prelims & finals), irrespective of their Trials placing. Supposed to be partly based on the swimmer's form @ training camp & at the Games (i.e. who's the hot hand) as well as their respective schedules, though there has been accusations of politics influencing the selection in the past...
